The excellence of the food combined with reasonable prices makes the Concordia Club at 429 Ottawa Street one of the best restaurant secrets in Kitchener and surrounding area. Although a German, it is welcoming to anyone and the menu gives sufficient varety and is not too narrowly ethnic. All dishes are well-prepared and served in the homey ambience of a restaurant in the old country. Traditional German dishes such as Sauerbraten, Wiener Schnitzel and Beef Rouladen with red cabbage, Spätzle, dumplings or sauerkraut are available the $14 to $16 range. - As Canadians we often have a very narrow view of German food and culture and often substitute Bavarian for German, even our restaurants do it, just because American soldiers used to be stationed in Bavaria for many years. - The Concordia club menu recognizes the diversity of German cuisine and offers specialties like the Finkenwerder fish dish or the North German Bismarck Herring ($7.50) as a tasty appetizer. - There are also seasonal specialties that appeal to my palate, with white asparagus and ham in June and kale ("Grünkohl") based meals in the Fall. - For those who are new to German food, or who cannot quite decide, I have two suggestion: Option 1. Come any Thursday evening after 5 p.m. with a friend. On Thursdays pork "Wiener Schnitzel" dinners are on "Special", selling 2 for $18.99, plus tax and tips. Come with a Concordia Member, with a membership card (a body may join) and the bill is reduced by 15%. - Option 2: Come with a friend and try the "smorgasbord" ( a bit of everything) Concordia Platter for $18.50. For I believe a $2.00 surcharge for an extra plate you can a share a bit of everything. - For those with a good appetite there is (yes you have guessed it) a very ample "Bavarian" Buffet on Wednesdays at lunch ($11.95) and at dinner with sinfully tempting dessert table choices for a mere $14.95 per person. - Overall, dining at the Concordia Club is a positive experience, that is pleasing to the palate and to the pocketbook, with perhaps the exception of the price of beer. - A 12 ounce bottle of Canadian beer at $5.50 before tax and tip is perhaps not a great bargain, but Concordia's big 1 litre bottle of house wine is a relative bargain, and my wife and I prefer to drink wine with a meal! - Lastly, and to protect myself from the comments that $5.50 plus tax and tip is NOT a bargain price for beer, I will state that Bavarian beer sold at the 2014 Munich Oktoberfest, in their huge full 1-litre glass mugs called "Maß" (Mass) for 9.75 Euros each (tax and service included) was, in fact cheaper, gulp for gulp, than selling our Canadian beer ar $5.50 a bottle, plus tax, plus tip. - But, I know, we have different taxes in Ontario, and even my nicely decorated Canadian Legion on Belmont Street charges $4.10 for a bottle of Canadian beer, which includes the tax, and a minor tip is optional. - The main point of this article is to encourage you to come to the Concordia Club for the excellence of food.

We were first timers on Friday night, for the Buffet, the food was great, the best Schnitzels ever! Katrine was our server and she was amazing, very friendly ( we were the Aussies in a group of 10), will definitely be back again.
