I've never eaten this much fish in my life! Seriously, great price, fantastic staff, the cod melts in your mouth and the halibut is so good I just always want more! This place is amazing! Shady Rest is simply the best!

Went here with my parents one minute before closing! The place was empty but they were nice enough to still serve us. We got two of the two-piece halibut with chips. It was the real deal wrapped in newspaper and everything! When we brought it home we saw they gave us a few extra pieces in there as well - so nice of them. The fish was very light and melted on the tongue. The chips were great too! Definitely will go here again.

Don't let appearances fool you-It's Really Good!. Drove by hundreds of times -stopped in one day a couple months ago -have been back at least 4-5 times since and it's always really good. The batter & fish is tasty, light and flaky, The fries are excellent. Coleslaw is really good! homemade (I think?) tartar sauce too. The combo dinner is the best value for 2 people it comes with 3-4 prawns and they are so addicting. The service is quick and friendly, the portions are good. I honestly think this is the best place for fish and chips in Kelowna (and right up there for any I've had in my life to date).
BEST fish & chips EVER!. By far the best original British-style fish & chips I have ever had. LOVE the newspaper its wrapped in. Consistently great!

Greasy but tasty. The dark, greasy appearance of the fish is misleading; the batter is actually pleasantly light and flaky - fortunately, because there's a lot of it. Fish and prawns seemed nice and fresh. Portions are adequate, although $4.70 is a little steep for a single, mid-sized extra piece of fish. Chips also on the greasy side, but not excessively so, and are tasty. All in all, a good, quality takeout meal; not surprising that they've managed to stay in business for decades while the number of fast food choices in Kelowna has exploded.
Greasy yet still a delicious home town favourite.. If there was one word to describe the fish here it would be greasy. Super greasy actually. Yet it's still surprisingly tasty. They use a traditional thick British-style batter that just sops up the fat so you can do what I do and drain the fish on dozens of napkins. The fries are exceptional here though and the service is always prompt and pleasant. It's a bit dive-y looking but kitschy, clean and a bit of charmer.
Tiny quaint eatery! Affordable delicious 3 piece cod and 1 shrimp and fries combo with gravy! Batter was light, and tasty! We are small appetites so we 3 shared! Service with a 😃 smile! Highly recommended!
HUGE SHOUT OUT FOR SHADY REST... ON SUTHERLAND AVE. MAN WAS THAT GOOD FISH AND CHIPS. Everything was pipping hot, fish was crisp as heck... fries and gravy were so good as was the cole slaw. The nice lady cautioned me on ordering a bigger portion and I"m glad she did as I could barely finish what I had. Got there at 11:30, opening time so didn't have a parking problem and we got the only table and chairs in there. There is a long booth you can sit at though. Price was very good too. HIGHLY RECOMMEND !!! Will definitely go again. Check it out folks.
Best Fish and Chips in Kelowna ! Always fresh , Every time is as good as the last ! Big portions ! I always get 2 piece Cod n Chips and 3 Battered Prawns and a small Coleslaw ! I can never finish it all in 1 day ! Prices are good and a bit Cheaper than the going rate ! cheaper compared to other places !
The only thing I would change if I was the Owner is Renovate the Building a bit ! freshen it up a bit , new roof , new siding , make it a bit more modern while still keeping that old Vibe that we all love ! I know space is limited on your property but perhaps you could add another level / storey on that building as you need more room , not many places to sit to eat , sometimes when you pick up food there is no place to stand cause people are in the way ! sometimes the line up goes out doors , so I would contact the city and ask about your zoning and building rules in order to expand the business ! or even a 2nd location ! you know Kelowna will support you ! :) Cheers
Decent fish and chips, good portion size. Never dined in, only ever got take out, and it was always good.
A basic fish and chip store in the British style here in Kelowna. That is sure to entice your appetite toward the taste of this style. I love the unpretentious helpfulness of the stuff and the deep fried fish chips and prawns are delicious , in moderation 🙂

I wish I could add one more ⭐️ to Shady Rest but I just couldn't.
For one, my 2-piece Cod were thickly battered. They were well fried though and they definitely tasted awesome in my tongue. A bit too greasy in my opinion but they were still acceptable.
Now the chips (aka fries) is something I want to object. I think the fries was not as crispy as I expected it to be. I felt like perhaps it had been precooked before the order was place; or maybe it was just the way they cook the fries like that. "Mediocre" would be the right word to describe the fries.
Fries aside, the overall experience was exceptional nevertheless. I loved the classic, ancient atmosphere of the restaurant—fits well their name "shady" haha. The price was barely justified in my opinion: $14.35 + tip for 2-piece Cod + Chips (tax included). I also kinda wished the portion was slightly bigger for the price.
TL;DR I think Shady Rest is worth the dine! And yes, the exterior does look quite shady in a lot of ways (no pun intended) 😂
Just need to send a shout out to the wonderful staff at this fish and chips restaurant. They're super busy but still remain happy and chipper. The food was delicious, as usual . Best value for money in this day and age. Just like Merry olde England.
I've been here about three times now and have not experienced what the past reviews have experienced. The batter golden and not too oily. Never dark either was always a nice gold color I didn't have the coleslaw but their tartar sauce is the best I've had in house super nice owners and employees that work there. I would of missed this gem if I took what some people said to heart. Also super reasonably priced
Best Fish n Chips I ever had. I thought what everyone was saying about Shady's was just hype. No, man. It was damn decent👌. Got the 2 piece COD with large chips. It was crispy but not crunchy and the fish was tender.

This is probably the best fish and chips I've had and by far the best thing I have eaten while here in Kelowna the last several days. The portions were generous (pictured here is a 3 piece cod with chips + 2 prawns) and the price was more than reasonable ($23!!!) since the meal was split between two people. The tartar sauce was also really good! I love that the meal came wrapped in newspaper and the lady taking our order was energetic and friendly. This place seems to have been around for a while and it's not hard to see why. I'll definitely be back when I'm in the area.
