Review Chives Canadian Bistro - Halifax

Very nice restaurant, with great service. Fancy, low lighting with candles at the tables. Not what I expected from the name, but was pleasantly surprised. Ordered the steak which was cooked to perfection, definitely the best steak I have ever had. Ordered a great cider too, and their homemade caramel ice cream was amazing. Highly recommended, enjoy!

Fantastic place for an incredible dinner. The service at chives is the best in the city. The servers know the menu and offer fabulous suggestions. It's a very unique place and the decor is beautiful. They have a great drink menu. If you're in town this is a great place for a great meal, good selection of fish dishes.

My husband and I have been here a couple times, both were in a private room for different celebrations. Service is top notch, super professional and friendly. Excellent spot for a special quiet meal. The food is super delicious and satisfying. Definitely recommend and will return!

This was an amazing birthday dinner! I had the pumpkin soup as an appetizer and the short ribs as the main course. Both were fantastic! My wife had the pappardelle pasta which was the pasta of the day. It was excellent. Our service was Johnny-Lynn. She was an excellent server. She was professional, knew the menu, and very nice to interact with. We were very impressed with Chives. We will return. Thank you for a wonderful evening.

Great place and great food. I have eaten here a number of times. They have gone out of their way to accommodate any allergy issues. Every time they have been very attentive to the allergy request. The servers have always been knowledgeable about the food and ingredients. The water and wine are always refilled promptly. I can't think of anything they could have done better. Amazing restaurant. I would revisit in a heartbeat. I ordered the pork belly as my appetizer. It was rich, flavourful, and so succulent. I've never had such amazingly prepared pork belly before. Absolutely exquisite. The duck was juicy, and the roasted vegetables had such a wonderful aroma. I chose to complement it with a sis of butternut squash risotto. I've become a bit of a risotto snob since I couldn't find a restaurant in Halifax that made it as good as I do myself until tonight. Chives blew me away. 5/5. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Food was great, all of it was local and seasonal. There were also limited amounts so if there is something specific you want, don't show up too late. Meal starts with some nice biscuits and molasses which were surprisingly great (I hadn't had molasses on a biscuit before). Nice staff. Overall great experience I would absolutely recommend it.

The food was quite delicious. But honestly, the service was just plain bad. Very blunt/abrupt, definitely wasn't a warm service. Mixed up dietary restricted plates, and didn't fix/apologize for the mistake. The vibes of the restaurant felt dated/off. The meal felt out of place in the restaurant. Will try again, hoping for better service.

The food was excellent, as expected for a restaurant with such a good reputation. The service was even better. Our waiter was attentive, helpful, and offered us some tips on local vineyards and other restaurants to try. I look forward to returning the next time I'm in Halifax.

The lamb dish here was served to perfection. On top of an absolutely sumptuous minted pea risotto and falling off the bone, I was so very happy to have come to this restaurant to eat it. The rest of our party were equally delighted with their food, and I would recommend this place to anyone seeking fine cuisine. The bumpkin-esque guy that seated us wasn't too thrilled that we had a baby, but we totally didn't care and sat down anyway. I'm glad we did.

Stellar, unique Canadian dishes in a quiet restaurant with a wonderful atmosphere. The prices are a little on the higher end, but after enjoying the delicious meal and receiving the great service it will seem more than fair. Overall great value, and I highly recommend you check this restaurant out. Make reservations because it can fill up quickly!

We had a great family dinner there. They were really accommodating with my family’s dietary restrictions (gluten and vegan) and made sure we had a good time. As note, I would mention that the washrooms are not accessible for people with reduced mobility (narrow staircase).

We had fantastic server Hannah. The food, service and value were great. But cherry cannoli filling was pretty artificial. Unless you like the cherry toothpaste chocolates found in the drug store box of chocolates... Then you will love it.

This was probably the best meal I had in a long time. I got the halibut and every bite was an gastronomic experience on its own. Very balanced in flavour. Wow! I would definitely come back again.. found my new favourite resto in hali! :) service was great and the ambience was perfect. Top notch

It's not cheap and its atmosphere definitely lives up to "casual fine dining", but the food is fantastic. I tried two different meals here: the lamb and seafood gnocchi. Both were amazing. Definitely the best restaurant I've been to in Halifax!

A group of four of us. Cocktails, starters, mains and a shared dessert. Everyone of us had a great meal and wouldn't change a thing. I have eaten at so e of the best restaurants in Copenhagen, NY and London and the food and drinks at Chives competes very well. Halifax you are very fortunate to have this team. Really good quality.

Excellent food. The lobster corn chowder and tikka masala mussels were real standouts among the appetizers. Loved the halibut main course. Some things were a bit off like the melon-prosciutto salad and the mushroom side dish. The place could definitely use some help in its presentation: the logo looks like a mediocre chain restaurant (think Applebee's) and the entryway feels like a dentist's office. But the atmosphere inside is nice and the service was very good. Enjoyed the experience and would recommend.

I ate here for a friends birthday and It was the best meal we’ve ever had in Halifax hands down!!! I also have Crohn’s disease and am 6+ months pregnant. I have limited diet restrictions and they went above and beyond for me and my meal was amazing!! I felt so cared for and my meal wasn’t bland or boring. The chefs and staff were so kind I was Blown away, I really enjoyed myself and can’t wait to go back!

Tremendous meal. Went with an appetizer of seared scallops with pork belly - the scallops were perfectly prepared and the pork belly was delicious. Main course of Lamb Wellington was likewise delicious, combined with the sweet potatoes puree on the plate. Dessert was a Sticky Toffee Pudding, with poached pears and vanilla ice cream; again, perfectly executed. Service was also very efficient. Highly recommend this place.

Best restaurant in Halifax. We frequently come for our anniversary and reserve the private vault room. The food is always incredible and the staff is beyond amazing. I also love how the menu changes each season. So much variety!

Incredible food and even more incredible service. Everything was yummy and surprisingly filling. We saved just enough room to share a blueberry lemon panna cotta and a strawberry tart with ice cream...so yummy! Must eat here when you're in Halifax!

We had supper here last night and I don't think we have ever had something so delicious!!!! The atmosphere was amazing. The decor is so beautiful and it has a really cosy feel despite the fact that the place was packed. Surprisingly with it being so busy our waitress Hannah ( 90% percent sure of the name �) was AMAZING. She checked on us and did a great job at making us feel like we were her top priority and impressed me when she jokingly scolded my hubby for not eating his veggies ( which I have been doing for years ). To top it all off the food was amazing, and the wait was not long at all. We will for sure come back when in the area! Thanks for a great experience Chives! Becky and Bobby �

The food was delicious and our server was fabulous!! She was very friendly and knowledgable about the menu. She also was great with pointing out the gluten free options after I mentioned I was gluten free, which I really appreciated. We will be back next time we are in Halifax for sure! Highly recommend this restaurant :)

Just came back from supper at Chives. Started off with an Atlantic Storm cocktail, then moved on to the charcuterie plate. absolutely delicious. I got the heritage pork of the day which was the most perfectly cooked pork tenderloin I have ever had, coupled with a quark ravioli, seasonal veg, and a glorious morel mushroom sauce. My husband had the beef Wellington and was equally pleased. Service was great, too. Thank you!

When you find a restaurant whose meal makes you go silent because the explosion of flavour is unlike anything your palette has ever experienced, then you know you've found the one. Everything was absolutely beautiful. The meat was succulent, the vegetables were aromatic, and the cocktails were amazing. Also loved getting scones and molasses rather than bread at the start. Definitely going back.

I had dinner at Chives this past weekend. The food and service were excellent. I had the Arctic Char as a main course and it was delicious. The restaurant was very comfortable, with a warm and relaxed atmosphere. The decor is great as well. Highly recommended.

I don't often write reviews, but when a place like this goes above and beyond so many times, they deserve to be recognized! Chives was where my husband got his first job back in the day and he always talked about how great of a place it was, so years ago we started a little tradition to go there almost every time we visit Halifax. The first time we went there, the waitress gave us a tour of the kitchen after we said my husband used to wash dishes a while back. The second time we went there we got bubbly on the house because it was my birthday. Yesterday we went there for our anniversary dinner, this time with our little three month old, and not only did the staff make us feel very welcome with our little baby (not always the case at fancier restaurants), but when our meal was disrupted by a fire alarm, staff at Two Doors Down promptly waived us in with the baby, gave us a place to sit (and nurse the little one) and offered us a drink on the house. The food is always outstanding and beautifully presented - every thing I've eaten there has been delicious, fresh and perfectly cooked - and the service is excellent! The ambiance now with the new renovations is even more charming. And I love that they support so many local producers in the region. Chives will always be one of my favourite restaurants in the Maritimes and I look forward to many more yummy meals there!

Wonderful meal with attentive service. Had the pierogis and chowder. Both delicious though different dough from traditional pierogis. Main courses were lamb stew and paella. Both excellent. Paella not traditional but still tasty. Maple crime brûlée amazing.

Great service and good food. One of my favourites in Halifax downtown. Burger � was awesome last Tuesday. Pork belly and scallops were fantastic as well.
