Nerdvana!
Yes, stereo-typically, a place with a bunch of board games to play and a menu with fantasy and sci-fi themed food and drinks would seem to be a venue of choice for geeks and/or nerds... Embrace the dork side and spend a fun evening playing some great games with friends and family while enjoying items from a creative and well prepared menu. Admittedly, it's not necessarily going to win any major gourmet awards, but it's some very tasty appetizer style items that are perfect finger foods while playing games. Seriously... I got to drink Ectoplasm! (Gin, cucumber juice and lemonade - it was really good!)
The decor of the place is perfect. Reminiscent of a medieval tavern with Excalibur embedded in a stone in the middle of the common room. There are shelves and recesses along the wall where you will find dozens of games - for all ages and interests.
While the place is licensed, I would not have any problems bringing along kids for a family outing - but maybe a little earlier in the day. It seemed to get busier as the night progressed, and when we were there the ages looked to range from about 16 to 60ish.
The staff is outstanding - even though it was our first time there (visiting from London), they made us feel like we were regulars. That, is an amazing accomplishment.
Unfortunately, we don't live in Guelph, and really wish there was a place like this back home.
We will be back - hopefully soon!
The atmosphere, decor, music and staff are incredible. It's a great deal of fun to just grab a bite to eat and a beer, mead or to roll for a shot. The staff are super helpful if your looking for magic or game suggestions. Their escape rooms are a blast with family or friends. One of the very few places in Guelph I recommend to EVERYONE.
A wonderful and truly unique cafe with amazing atmosphere, tasty food, and great drinks. The Round Table is a tabletop gamer's paradise. Upon entering, you'll want to check out the amazing atmosphere. Meticulously designed, the fun medieval dungeon decor is something that's just neat to be around. Upon the wall you'll find a hundred or so board games as well as 10-12 tables for everything from a group of 4 to 8 or more. There is a small hourly charge to rent a gaming table which can be lessened if you purchase food and/or drink. Here's where the surprise for me came. The food was wonderful! At the time I'm writing this review, it was only appetizer-type foods but I was told the menu will be expanding in the coming weeks. We shared three of the appetizers (American fusion) as well as two deserts and each was unique and really delicious. The beer selection was excellent too featuring fresh beers from the local breweries in Guelph. One of the beers on tap was even part of a special limited production run. The mixed alcoholic and non-alcoholic drink selection including coffees, has something for everyone. While I can think of no better place to enjoy a board game or other table top game with friends, I think this cafe can appeal to the casual visitor who is just looking for a small bite to eat, a snack, or a drink, in one of the coolest atmosphere's I've enjoyed outside of major theme park restaurants. The cafe is only a few months old but it's already generating a following which I'm sure will continue to grow as it enters it's first year. It's clear that they are expanding one part of the restaurant (through a special wardrobe-type door that now leads to the restrooms). I can't wait to return the next time I'm in town to see how they build upon this wonderful concept.
