We ordered so much -and we are NOT Chinese food knowledgeable. We just ordered what looked interesting or what the internet told us was good ...everything was really delicious. And the guy serving us was so kind and patient with us. Will go back again !
I’ve always liked this place, unless some of the bad reviews, I’ve never ate in but I’ve picked up my order once before And they only accept cash, I usually order through skip the dishes, In my opinion the food is good, they always get it right and add a complimentary dessert, they didn’t have the braised eggplant dish tonight and the lady called back right away to suggest a refund or get something else, I ended up getting the braised tofu and vegetables dish.
Delicious. Some of the best Chinese food I have had in the Province. For two people we ordered the hot and sour soup, two orders of the soup dumplings, beef pan fried dumplings, spring rolls and the shanghai noodles, they also serve you tea as soon as you sit down. This was obviously too much to eat for two people and we ended up taking home the beef dumplings and the noodles.
The soup dumplings are out of this world, best I have ever had. The spring roll was flavourful and you could actually taste the ingredients. The beef dumplings were very tasty, but be careful, they are very juicy and explode when you eat them. The best part of this restaurant was that when we left we did not have that gross feeling you typically get after eating too much Chinese food. I cannot wait to go again!
Last week, I went to Shanghai 456 with my friend, Jamie. I’ve been to Shanghai 456 a few times before, but have never taken Jamie, so that’s where we opted to go since he was feeling like some Chinese food.
Shanghai 456 is located in the west side of Edmonton on 144th street and 118 avenue. If you’re not sure where it is are not sure what you’re looking for, it’s really easy to miss given that there really is no sign. They have a small parking lot which can sometimes get full. I went right around when they open for the evening and the lot was already full!
First time here and did not realize they only took cash, but they accepted my debit card as we were first timers.
It was a Sunday evening and they were very busy. We didn't know what to order from the menu as the selections were many. We took a stab at three selections and two were a little repetative and we ended up with an overload of noodles. Our fault.
Will come again for sure.
We had green beans with a sauce and they were delicious, so was the coconut shrimp! Yummers.
We will return to try more. It's not fancy but when the food is great, who cares!
I haven't tried many places in Edmonton for XLB's but I would say that Shanghai 456 has the best XLB I've tried so far. I also love the options that they have and how there are food items that I could not find at other Chinese restaurants. My favourites to order are definitely the deep fried donut with pork floss in sticky rice roll and the stir fry rice cakes! Food comes out really fast and it's rare that I'd have to wait a long time! Overall, this place is one of my top choices for Chinese food in Edmonton.
Be aware of extremely hot buns.
Everything we ordered is very tasty.
Don't expect great service. The guy just threw all the utensils on our table and gave us one menu for 2 people.
Please install AC.
Phenomenal Shanghainese cuisine. The girlfriend and I sincerely enjoyed all the wonderfully prepared dishes here. The sweet pork tenderloin in lychee sauce was simply amazing. The XLB (Xiao Long Bao) was the best I've tasted in Canada (though let's get something out of the way, it's still not close to what Din Tai Fung would offer). We also ordered the pan fried beef bun, which was incredibly flavourful and juicy. Coming from Calgary, I was sad to realize there's no such calibre restaurant back home.
I come from a traditional Chinese family and I travel to Asia quite often so when I say I've eaten a lot of great authentic Chinese food please believe me when I say so... I was super surprised to see Shanghai 456 have a rating of 4.4 when my experience in Edmonton eating Chinese food was typically quite disappointing. So I went there immediately and I have been most pleasantly surprised. The pork belly which is my all time favorite dish was absolutely amazing. The Shanghai Bok Choy was cooked to the perfect firmness. My husband believes that this place has he best dumplings he's ever had. I went with people with a variety of pallets including small children and every single person left very satisfied. There is a man, the only server in the restaurant. He runs around serving all the tables on his own and he is wonderful to talk to. I will be back soon to try more dishes.
