A few weeks ago, I finally got the chance to try Tang Bistro. Well kind of, I ordered it via Foodora. I had read a lot about Tang Bistro, and have been wanting to give it a try for a while, but just never made my way there. It is, though, a million times closer to me than Noodle Feast!. To try and have a fair-ish comparison of Noodle Feast, I actually went there a few days before giving Tang Bistro a try. I also tried ordering essentially all of the same things. A hand-pulled noodles with beef, tomatoes, and eggs as toppings, dumplings, and a pork burger.
Tang Bistro’s been on my radar ever since it first opened. A lot of Northern Chinese spots seem to have opened up recently (South Silk Road, Blossom Northern China Cuisine and Chinese Crepe). TB specializes in Xi’an cuisine. We came on a Tuesday evening and the place was half full. The inside is quite spacious and even has a patio facing out onto 109 Street (after all, it housed Urban Diner).
This restaurant is between a 3.5 and a 4.0 but I rounded it up to 4.0 :P I came here twice within a month and some dishes are more remarkable and more consistent than others.
The stars of the show are the liang pi (cold noodles), fried rice, and dumplings. There are two flavours of cold noodles and you have to order both if you are a fan of liang pi from noodle feast. Even if you aren't a fan, after you order one flavour, you would want to order the othe flavour anyways. It's that good! I loved the fried rice here and most of you are probably wondering why I would even order that in a northern Chinese restaurant, but I love fried rice and I took a gamble and I got rewarded big time. The "wok hey" or wok taste from the high temperature oil and wok hitting the rice is just impeccable. The portion was small but it tasted mighty fine to make up for it. Last but not least, the dumplings are plump and juicy just like Noodle Feast and Let's Grill. I just don't like the fact that I couldn't order the chives dumplings but the celery dumplings that I ordered as an alternative were surprisingly good.
Moving on to the inconsistent or mediocre dishes, we have the lamb skewers that were big portioned, hot (temperature), juicy and perfectly seasoned to just chewy and warm. It's bigger bang for your buck than Let's Grill but it sure isn't consistently delivering. The soup noodle dishes were OK, I'd rather eat at Noodle Feast. Unless you really need a change of pace, I would just order a noodle or two to say you've tried it. It's not the greatest. The Chinese hamburger is a for-sure rip-off and you should stay away as far as possible.
All in all, I'm excited to see a more authentic northern Chinese restaurant open that is not the same old (but good) Noodle Feast. It sure beats other competitors like Wheat Garden and Fuqing Lanzhou Noodles in terms of authenticity, locations, cleanliness, and sometimes price. I can see this place lasting for a while if it can improve on the dishes I mentioned.
