In my quest to attend games at every arena in the NHL, I found myself in Edmonton. The Have Mercy restaurant and bar turned out to be one of the most interesting places that I have eaten at. My meal consisted of ginger and carrot soup with steak and beans on toast, with some pretzels and barbeque sauce. It was such a variety of flavor, while listening to the blues. It was truly an enjoyable meal, which defiantly added to the overall experience of my trip.
Chicken was bomb some of the best in the city gonna have to hit it up on a Wednesday for piano karaoke cuz the inside is really cool crazy old time style if Karaoke is good might have found my new spot oh and they got all the whiskey u want whiskey they got it
A decent southern-style restaurant with a varied menu. The complimentary pretzels are a nice touch. We ordered lunch fare: fried catfish po boy, blackened catfish and chips, and crispy fried chicken. The catfish was delicious, flavourful, and balanced by the coleslaw. The fried chicken was really crispy, and they did a great job with the batter. Unfortunately, the po boy was just terrible, lacked flavour, and the bread seemed drier than it should've been. Still overall, it was an enjoyable meal, quick service, and I'd go again.
The cocktails are so delicious and you get complementary pretzels. It’s just like visiting a southern truck stop but with more flare.
The jalapeño queso dip was creamy and delicious
And the dried green tomatoes are succulent as well.
The food and service were incredible! The fried green tomatoes and hush babies were some of the best dishes I've ever tasted. Very unique and fun atmosphere with a bar feel and awesome setting. Can't wait to return!
This is my new favorite southern restaurant! I love their food, atmosphere and decor for the place. While you wait they offer you complimentary pretzels and dip - needless to say... I had my fair share... they were so good and FREE. I had the chicken and waffle and it pretty good (nothing out of the ordinary but overall good). However, my girlfriend's mac and cheese was disappointingly under flavored. (3.5)
Update: Came back a second time (was offered a credit) to try their food again. It was a improvement, they got new items and improved their taste. Overall, on my second visit, the food and service was much much better. (4)
Have Mercy is a relatively new addition near Whyte Ave, located on the second floor above El Cortez. Once you walk up the stairs into this Southern bar, you're surrounded by loud and upbeat music. This is not a place to sit and chat, but a place to hang out and have a drink or two. Disclaimer: I was invited to try out the recently revamped fall/winter menu for 2016, so the meal was on the house except for the extra drink I paid for.
Have Mercy is a unique dining experience. Our food was tasty but nothing too out of the ordinary. The Mac and Cheese wasn't very flavourful and the pulled pork burger was a tad generic. The service was good and the atmosphere was eclectic. Perhaps, we will return on one of the Elvis nights!
Wow, I can't believe it's already been nearly two months since the Grand Opening at Have Mercy Southern Table and Bar, the time since I started up my freelance writing business has literally just whipped by. I've got tons of content for The Salty Almond but not nearly enough time! Have Mercy is El Cortez's sister restaurant and the culinary creation of the wonderfully talented Lindsay Porter (one of Edmonton's rare women chefs). Located directly above El Cortez, Have Mercy boasts an old school sign to complement the likes of Meat a block west, and some amazing artwork on the building's exterior.
I'd like to start off saying that this place is going to be a GEM of a joint!
As I walked up the stairs towards what looked like a vintage jukebox, the interior is amazing. You completely forget that you're in Edmonton. Everywhere you look there's something new that you discover. Undoubtably one of the most well thought out designed concept of a place. I'm no professional foodie but wow the food was great I had 6 items off the menu ( I was hungry). I started off with the Fried green tomatoes with andouille gravy, I'd defiantly come back just for these. Second appetizer was the salad it had pecans, strawberries and spinach with a herb dressing, well a salads a salad in boring land but not this one. It has a spicy and sweet vibe going on which in my eyes is a perfect summer salad. Now to the mains, I had the fried chicken and donuts with the chili honey sauce. One phrase "Sanders ain't got ish on this!" I think that should be suffice of a review. Second main was the Half rack of ribs with two sides which were collard greens and succotash. The ribs were fall off the bone LITERALLY, I did not have to chew on my ribs like a dog, AMAZING on how they do it. The sides were good I'd order them again, one thing that caught were the collard greens I go out a lot and haven't seen collard greens in YEG so good on ya "Have Mercy". Last but not least I had both desserts, I am not a fan of sweets but I do know my pies. On the dessert side they have buttermilk pie and pecan pie. The pecan pie reminded me of a bakery that I used to go until it closed down on the northside of edmonton called "The Greek bakery" was own by a guy name Walter; the reason I mention this Bakery is because I fell in love with the pecan pie for the first time with this little bakery. When I type this makes me want to go back to the greek bakery and compare the two pie because the pecan pie was identical as of the greek bakery. They make there pies in house which is so hard to find nowadays. The buttermilk pie was baked with an exact perfection. So overall "Have Mercy southern table & bar" you have the "Soul food" that Edmonton has been missing.
