Vancouver is home to thousands of hidden gems. You could say I’ve had my fair share of sushi, pizza, and pho in the city, but I’m constantly in the search for the “best” of everything. Makoto is a Japanese-owned mom and pop establishment in South Burnaby best known for serving Japanese comfort food. They’ve been around for quite a while now, but I didn’t discover this place myself until a few weeks ago through a recommendation from a friend who frequents this place! Japanese restaurants are heavily saturated these days and I guess it’s worthwhile to check out restaurants that are actually Japanese owned and not Chinese or Korean owned!
In my opinion, Makoto Sushi has the best saba roll and futomaki roll in town. The presentation may not be the most elegant, yet the taste was authentic. It's a little hidden gem in the neighbourhood.
Been coming for years now, and with the exception of not enough wait staff , (its like a 2nd home for us, so we pretty much come in and help ourselves lol) ,its by far my favorite sushi place! From the Melt in your mouth tuna, great mango paradise roll, smokey JJ roll and the owners custom rolls and fun attitude, its worth the wait!!
Another hidden gem within vancouver own by a japanese family. Come after 3pm they have even more fresh sashimi and daily special. Personally recommendation order the daily special.
This sushi place is so close to where I am living, so it's become a place where my parents would always order a party tray for take out from them, as if my parents didn't know other sushi restaurants existed.
As a foodie, I figure Makoto is a bit overpriced comparing to other sushi restaurants. I remember ordering a chirashi don at a small portion that definitely wasn't worth $16. Other than that, I still like their saba roll. It's hard to not come back (because of my parents) even though most menu items are avenge and somewhat overpriced. I guess I'll just have to wait for another sushi restaurant to magically appear to replace my parents' habit with Makoto.
Headed to this little neighbourhood spot, low key Japanese joint for just a small bite. We started with a Tako sunomono, which albeit small, had three generous slices of octopus. The dish was slightly lacking in the tang that I like on sunomono but satisfactory overall. The assorted sashimi was really good, fresh and sliced well. The salmon was my favourite of the dish. I'm not a huge fan of futomaki, but as you can see, the rice to filling ratio was bang on. This is perfect for those a bit squeamish about trying raw fish. And to finish off the dinner, a Chicken Udon with assorted tempura. We added a Tamago, soft boiled egg, to give the broth a creamier texture. The noodles were cooked perfectly and the chicken was tender. Overall, the meal was pretty good. My only complaint would be the service. They don't really focus on that part, don't expect the waitress to ask you how things were, and be prepared to flag her down if you want anything. It's a barebones sort of place, but a good option for a quick bite. They do lots of takeout as well, so if the lack of service is going to bother you, order ahead and get your food to go.
Quality is quite good here...tempura and chicken katsu are not overly breaded. I would come back. I came for lunch and it was the owner/chef working as a waiter, so I could see why people complain about the service at other times. It's not quick service.
This is a place where I would definitely go if you are in the area. The chef/owner will know what you usually order and he is very friendly and down to earth. Do not expect him to flatter you will some "BS" talk.
The lunch box here is awesome. Beef teriyaki option is a must. Try it and you will come back.
Hidden gem in the area! See for yourself.
FAVOURITE Japanese Restaurant. Makoto is my absolute favourite Japanese restaurant in Burnaby. The teriyaki is terrific and I love the crispy California roll. I don't like sashimi but my boyfriend's parents love it!
This is an authentic Japanese ran small sushi joint with quality food. The prices are fair, and the quality is there. There is only 2-3 staff in total, so be patient. It is worth the wait. Saba roll highly recommended. Delightfully refreshing, unique and tasty. Hidden gem! Will be back.
Went for weekday lunch- authentic, tastes yummy, but a little pricey for the portions. Service was friendly and attentive enough...maybe a little slow (still acceptable, nothing i'd gripe about..)..
Great little gem on the slope. I like this place a lot. Firstly, its owned and run by a Japanese family....kind of important in my books. Secondly, the food is good and i like the fact that its small and cozy and simple. I like the chicken udon, and the Yakisoba....and the Oyako don is perfect. Yes, sometimes the service is slow when its busy , due most likely to the small working space they deal with there, and yes i suppose its a little pricier than some other places, but i dont care. I like the people, the place and the food. Period.
Delicious Japanese food. Like I said, the food is great! Had the Volcano Roll and the Chicken Yakiudon.
But unfortunately the service was subpar due to the 2 person staff (probably husband & wife) and the prices were higher than most other places.
Though despite this, I would come back to try the other special rolls and my favorite Japanese dishes~
I love is here!!! One the the best Japanese restaurants in Burnaby. Hidden gem well worth the visit any day except Monday when it's closed. Go here. You'll love it!!!
Go there expecting to wait at least 30 min for your meals, but food is worth the wait! Yummmm~
Not too bad. Well, the price is not that cheap, so I get the one with the decent price, which is oyako don, and it was nice, the sauce is well done, the rice using expensive rice, but the store for whole not my favourites maybe because I can found some other places which serves same taste with less expensive
Expensive japanese food. It's around where I live so I visit there often. The chef and the servers are very nice, but it is very small. The waits for food can sometimes be very long. The chef is Japanese which is hard to find nowadays when all the other sushi places are Koreans or Chinese.
Their food is very divine. It is a little pricey, but worth it.
Great casual sushi. Tasty sushi and rice bowls! The fish was fresh, and the oyako-don felt like a nice comfort food. I'm glad I finally found a casual Japanese/sushi restaurant in Burnaby that doesn't serve 3-inch cubes of sashimi or fist-size nigiri (I'm sorry, but they're just not appetizing). The service can be a bit rough, especially during lunch and dinner rushes.
Beautiful and Delicious. My favourite no doubt gotta try it
Will Come Back Again. When our family goes to a Japanese restaurant nowadays, there is a standard list of items that we almost always order. Gomae, udon, oyakudon, yam tempura, etc The good thing with this is that we can compare this list of items with other Japanese restaurants that we go to.
I have to say that Makoto did really well in a lot of areas. Their gomae was very tasty and not over-sauced like other places.Their tempura was crispy and crunchy and their oyakudon was perfect. The egg mixture was soft and moist and not overcooked.
The final seal of approval was when the kids asked when we can come back here again!
Other points: not a big place, in fact, it's nice and cosy. Also, although the price is a little more than your usual, it was worth it!
Cold Noodles!. I've actually been here once before and not been totally impressed with the food. However, that may have just been a one off for a lunch service.
Today was not the case. I went with a friend and tried their special cold ramen noodles, seafood motoyaki and special raw oysters. The cold ramen noodles $8.5 came with a variety of ingredients including shrimp, ham, seaweed, ginger, egg. It was a hearty full bowl of freshness that I would highly recommend. The oysters were 'gm oysters' which were 3 for $4.50, sounds good to me. They had a drizzle of miso paste? on top, which made it very tasty. The motoyaki $4.95 unfortunately was not in a shell, but came in a bowl with a lot of ingredients. Taste was very good! My friend had some rolls and a potato croquette which he had stated were all very good. Server was friendly and attentive. If it makes any difference, this is a Japanese own and run restaurant.
Will definitely be back here for more :)
This is my favorite Japanese place by far. The food is always fresh and well made. We have travelled in Japan and find Makoto to be on par with what we experienced there. We go here often and will be back for sure!!
Authentic and Delicious. Even though this place has been in my neighborhood for years I never once ate in there cause I thought of their pricing to be more expensive and my sister told me that their rolls are quite small in portion. One day I got a take out of their Makoto Roll, Crispy California Roll and Dynamite Roll. It was indeed 'small portion' just like my sis described for the price it costs. The taste was not bad. It's not fantastic but not bad. I find the rice on their rolls to be mostly sticky and a bit mushy, like it's all stuck together and not in individual bits. I suppose that's the Japanese style of making rolls that way? Anyways overall the food I ordered was OK only, and for the price I paid for it I wasn't impressed at all.
It wasn't until I ordered their box lunch the other day; I ordered their Box B ($10.50); When the food came I was thoroughly pleased by the arrangement and portion. It had an assortment of Tempura (2 prawn, 4 veggies), a half portion of Chicken Teriyaki (There was a choice of Chicken or Beef, I chose Chicken.) and a bowl of rice, 3 pieces of California Roll and a salmon and tuna nigiri, a regular veggie salad, potato salad, a piece of orange and a bowl of Miso soup. Isn't that plenty? I enjoyed every single dish in this Box! Well besides the California Rolls cause I still think it's average compared to some I've tried. The chicken was tender and browned beautifully by the cooking and the Tempura was crispy yet not greasy at all. The salads were also refreshing, and the orange was so sweet and delicious that I think they must have spent a lot of effort eye picking it! I was pretty full by the time I finished the whole thing and I was totally satisfied. I think this is probably their best valued item on the menu, and it was indeed good value. If you ever come here definitely try out the box.
This restaurant is run by Japanese which I think makes their food authentic. And I think it is family operated given the small amount of staff they have and the fact that they all speak Japanese. The lack of staff means their service may not be too great. The last time I went there was only the chef standing at the counter greeting guests and taking orders. Even there wasn't too many people he was so occupied that he even forgot to take one table's order, the guests had to walk up to him to give him their orders. I personally don't really mind the service quality though. As long as the food is good, that's good enough for me. :)
I live 2 mins from makoto and decided to try it pne day. The 1st time had the most brutal service, 2nd time was great! Been going since and love the quality each time.
Just ate here and the Paradise roll is to die for! A must order.
Must order. Whenever you come here, always remember to order the cream corn croquette... the best!
I wanted an entree but Grayson thought that it wouldn’t be variable enough for me because it didn’t have any meat or veggies so we decided to share our meal instead. Of course, I got zaru soba ($8.95) because 1) I love the stuff and 2) it doesn’t show up very often on menus. I thought that the zaru soba here was alright, I mean there isn’t much you can mess up on when it comes to this dish. But I do think that it was a little pricy because typically this dish doesn’t end up being this pricy and w
We started with their signature Makoto Roll which comes with cucumber, crab meat, and unagi rolled up and topped with prawn and orange and green tobiko. Oddly enough, when I placed my order for this over the phone, the waitress wasn't sure what I was talking about…
Makoto is a Japanese restaurant in the Burnaby South area on Royal Oak and Rumble. I don't normally go close to this area, but M wanted a short dinner meeting with ScarFace, ChinaHat and AwkwardGirl. They are one of the top Japanese restaurants in the Burnaby South area, so I wanted to see if it was as good as people say. They sell the usual Japanese dishes you would see at any other restaurant. The interior is not too big but they can configure the tables so they can sit 10 people. If you are doing this, you probably want to call ahead of time. They have sashimi, nigiri, rice, soup salads, donburi, noodles, agemono, teriyaki, rolls and other combos. M ordered the Chicken Yakisoba ($8.50). Yakisoba is fried Japanese noodles and their version includes snap peas, eggs, carrots, and onions. Topped with pickled red ginger and dried seaweed. ScarFace ordered the Beef Yakisoba ($8.50), which is exactly the same but with different meat. They came way way later than all our meals. Tasted reall
Homey, perhaps a touch dated, honest, and old school is pretty much how I would characterize this unpretentious, Japanese-run little restaurant situated in a tiny commercial building on the corner of Rumble Street and Royal Oak Avenue in south Burnaby.
Makoto is a small japanese restaurant that is close to where I live. I've seen great reviews and even better pictures of sushi from this place. Since I am a sucker for crazy weird rolls (I know it's not authentic, but they make for a good picture!!), I kn
