Vancouver is home to thousands of hidden gems. You could say I’ve had my fair share of sushi, pizza, and pho in the city, but I’m constantly in the search for the “best” of everything. Makoto is a Japanese-owned mom and pop establishment in South Burnaby best known for serving Japanese comfort food. They’ve been around for quite a while now, but I didn’t discover this place myself until a few weeks ago through a recommendation from a friend who frequents this place! Japanese restaurants are heavily saturated these days and I guess it’s worthwhile to check out restaurants that are actually Japanese owned and not Chinese or Korean owned!
In my opinion, Makoto Sushi has the best saba roll and futomaki roll in town. The presentation may not be the most elegant, yet the taste was authentic. It's a little hidden gem in the neighbourhood.
Been coming for years now, and with the exception of not enough wait staff , (its like a 2nd home for us, so we pretty much come in and help ourselves lol) ,its by far my favorite sushi place! From the Melt in your mouth tuna, great mango paradise roll, smokey JJ roll and the owners custom rolls and fun attitude, its worth the wait!!
Another hidden gem within vancouver own by a japanese family. Come after 3pm they have even more fresh sashimi and daily special. Personally recommendation order the daily special.
This sushi place is so close to where I am living, so it's become a place where my parents would always order a party tray for take out from them, as if my parents didn't know other sushi restaurants existed.
As a foodie, I figure Makoto is a bit overpriced comparing to other sushi restaurants. I remember ordering a chirashi don at a small portion that definitely wasn't worth $16. Other than that, I still like their saba roll. It's hard to not come back (because of my parents) even though most menu items are avenge and somewhat overpriced. I guess I'll just have to wait for another sushi restaurant to magically appear to replace my parents' habit with Makoto.
Headed to this little neighbourhood spot, low key Japanese joint for just a small bite. We started with a Tako sunomono, which albeit small, had three generous slices of octopus. The dish was slightly lacking in the tang that I like on sunomono but satisfactory overall. The assorted sashimi was really good, fresh and sliced well. The salmon was my favourite of the dish. I'm not a huge fan of futomaki, but as you can see, the rice to filling ratio was bang on. This is perfect for those a bit squeamish about trying raw fish. And to finish off the dinner, a Chicken Udon with assorted tempura. We added a Tamago, soft boiled egg, to give the broth a creamier texture. The noodles were cooked perfectly and the chicken was tender. Overall, the meal was pretty good. My only complaint would be the service. They don't really focus on that part, don't expect the waitress to ask you how things were, and be prepared to flag her down if you want anything. It's a barebones sort of place, but a good option for a quick bite. They do lots of takeout as well, so if the lack of service is going to bother you, order ahead and get your food to go.
Quality is quite good here...tempura and chicken katsu are not overly breaded. I would come back. I came for lunch and it was the owner/chef working as a waiter, so I could see why people complain about the service at other times. It's not quick service.
This is a place where I would definitely go if you are in the area. The chef/owner will know what you usually order and he is very friendly and down to earth. Do not expect him to flatter you will some "BS" talk.
The lunch box here is awesome. Beef teriyaki option is a must. Try it and you will come back.
Hidden gem in the area! See for yourself.
FAVOURITE Japanese Restaurant. Makoto is my absolute favourite Japanese restaurant in Burnaby. The teriyaki is terrific and I love the crispy California roll. I don't like sashimi but my boyfriend's parents love it!
This is an authentic Japanese ran small sushi joint with quality food. The prices are fair, and the quality is there. There is only 2-3 staff in total, so be patient. It is worth the wait. Saba roll highly recommended. Delightfully refreshing, unique and tasty. Hidden gem! Will be back.
