First Choice

This place is now permanently closed. The owners are renovating the space and changing the restaurant into a Thai Restaurant. Current as July 14 2019.

Decent take out place. I've been drove around this area for several times and never thought of ordering a take out from this place. Just last week when it was raining I decide give this a try. I ordered the special foo yong and the S&S deep fried prawns, which both are not bad. I find the price is pretty much the same as the other chinese restaurants in burnaby, i.e. they are not cheap. However, dishes are freshly made, and they allow substitutions in dishes (such as I asked them no beef and no bell peppers in the foo yong). Also, if you pick up in person, you enjoy 10% off.

Verdict:
Food: 7/10 (freshly made food)
Service: 8/10 (allow substitutions in dishes with no extra charge is good)
Price: 6/10 (not cheap, but not very expensive too)
Overall: 21/30 (ok, may try other dishes next time)

Cheap & Tasty. I have tried many of the Chinese restaurant nearby my place and this is one the greatest chinese food that I will return! Have been here for many times and their food is always fresh and big portions. They open late and they do delivery! It's perfect for lazy people just like me:). I just ordered delivery last week, the guy said they have new menu and some promotion. So I got a free 2 litres coke by just ordering food. Sweet!!!

Amazing curry. Me and Phatty were staying in the Delta on Dominion and got the hankering for Chinese.

We had gone through the hotels restaurant list and had decided on one restaurant inthere, but figured we should check out Urbanspoon just incase there was a hidden gem in the area.

Right on the front page we saw a review for this place and decided to compare menus. Right off the hop we saw that First Choice Chinese's prices were $1+ less than the other restaurant, so we figured we'd give them a try.

We decided on:

- D905 Vegetarian Chow Mein
- D205 Dry Garlic Boneless Pork
- D114 Deep Fried Tofu in Peppery Salt
- D510 Szechuan Style Beef

and for adds ons we ordered rice and a side of curry.

The chow mein was the least favourite of the bunch. The noodles were good and the vegetables were great but it just seemed too dry. Still good though.

Being vegetarian I did not try the meat dishes. Phatty found that the pork was very tender and well seasoned. The Szechuan style beef was delicious and had a lot of vegetables. The dish had a good mix of a variety of vegetables and the sauce was great; not too salty and just enough spice.

The deep fried tofu was really neat. It was cut into triangles and had a decent layer of crust on the outside. They had a peppery salt on it but it was not spicy. The outside was really crispy and the inside was moist and soft but not mushy or runny. Phatty does not like tofu AT all but tried this dish and even had seconds (which says a lot). It also came with onions and crunchy balls of crust.

Paying for rice is something we aren't use to, as nowhere in Winnipeg really charges for rice, unless its extra, but for $1.25 we got 3.5 cups of rice.

The side of curry was the best menu item we ordered! It was full of flavour, not overly salty, not gritty or pasty, not thick or runny. I like hot hot currys but for one that was not hot, it sure packed some heat and made everything just that much better.

We got a free 2L of pop and free delivery with the order too, which was nice of them. The whole order came to $40!

Best Chinese food we've eaten here!. We have been disappointed with the other Chinese take out places we have ordered from since moving from Ontario to B.C. Until by chance we tried out First Choice and loved it! Everything was fresh, tasted good and had every dish we wanted. The staff is very friendly easy to communicate with and willing to tweak dishes to your liking. The price is good too, not overpriced. Overall great food!
