It’s been a while since I’ve been to Tairyou Ichiba so I had forgotten how amazing everything there was! Luckily, we had the perfect opportunity to go when a few family friends were visiting. Tairyou Ichiba is located along Kingsway and you won’t miss it because they have the most iconic wooden doors on the outside.
Tairyou Ichiba is a Japanese Restaurant, located on Kingsway Burnaby. I have passed by this restaurant every day on or off work. But, I have never been eaten at this place before. Finally, my fiance and I have decided to give a try at this place. Our experience is OK.
Environment: Tairyou Ichia has very unique ancient wooden doors, which is different from other restaurants. Inside the restaurant, it’s decorated with banners and Japanese artwork everywhere. This is a medium-sized restaurant. People can eat at the dining table with family or at the bar section by themselves.
Service: This restaurant only opens from 5:30 pm to midnight every day. So, we came to this place right after work. The service is OK. The waitress is a little bit bossy. But, they are handling food and take orders fast.
Food: Since it was our first time having food at this place, we decided a little bit everything to eat, such as sushi rolls, seafood, sashimis, and etc. The food came out of the kitchen fast. All the dishes have a great presentation. The sushi is delicious and authentic. Comparing with many sushi restaurants owned by Koreans, this place is an authentic Japanese Restaurant. The owners and waitresses all spoke Japanese. Because of this, all the dishes are so pricy.
Final Thoughts: If you would like to try some authentic Japanese sushi rolls, Tairyou Ichia is a good place to go.
Tairyou Ichiba

Fresh fish, very reasonably priced. Love there mega size nigiri, we've ordered the double uni - perfect! The deluxe sashimi platter has good selection of fresh fishes and shell-fish. One of the best in Burnaby.
I first tried this place for takeout and it was really delicious. I finally had the chance to go back and eat in. The restaurant has nice decor inside. I especially like the wooden doors to go into the restaurant. They have a small TV with random cartoons and segments of shows playing and Japanese music playing in the background. I really like the atmosphere here.
The first time, service was really good and they were really attentive with filling up our tea. My second visit, service was a little slow although understandable, as the restaurant was quite busy, with the addition of takeout orders on the phone. However, I would still come back because the food was really good!
The first time I ate in, I tried the toro salmon aburu oshizushi. I was surprised with the price and portion. It was only 7.80 and came with 8 pieces. I enjoyed this except I wish I had shared with my friends so I could try other dishes. I also ordered the ika and chopped scallop nigiri. The ika wasn't too chewy and the chopped scallop nigiri was really good. I actually ended up coming back a few days later to eat their chopped scallop roll. Their takoyaki is just OK. It is mostly batter and a small piece of tako.
The second time I came, I ordered the chawanmushi. It was silky and flavourful. The texture was just right, although I wish it had a few more pieces of seafood in it. But I would still order it again! The negitoro roll was melt in your mouth. The hamachi toro was also delicious.
Honestly, I don't know why I haven't been to this place more often. It's a short walk from Patterson skytrain station, so pretty convenient. The prices and portions are good. If you're in the area, this is definitely a place to try.
I frequent this place because of their Nigiri sushi. The price for their Toro and Saba is just right. The quality is also good and they have big daily specials list offered at lower prices. I've tried at least half of their menu and I'm still please with the food. The only thing that may be crappy is the reservation system they have in place, they seat everyone that comes to the door and you may occasionally have to wait past you reservation time.
Japanese owner and serving staff, all super friendly and the food is sooooo good!!!
Best toro sashimi and uni I had ever had in Vancouver >:D
Must try:
all kinds of sashimi
curry croquette (croquette with real curry with veges and beef!)
nigitoro roll
agedashi tofu (the sauce is sooo good)
cold soba noodle (secret menu!!)
*try to avoid rushing hours here because the service does get slow because they are making everything on the spot to keep the freshness, late night after dinner is the best!
This is my all time favorite sushi place. The food are good and the prices are decent. I will order the following food when I go there everytime.
- Deluxe Assorted Sashimi (Whole Aji, Salmon, Hamachi, Tuna and Ika)
- Seared Hamachi Toro Sushi
- Seared Hotate Sushi
- Long Tamago Sushi
- Heap up!Chopped Scallop Sushi
- Double Uni Sushi
- Gindara Kama
- Gyu-tan
They are always very busy and their service is slow. Be patient when you get a server to order your food. Other than that, I am very satisfied.
After my Portfolio show at my school, we decided to eat somewhere near Metrotown. We came across this restaurant called Tairyou Ichiba. Apparently Phil tried this place with his family a long time ago but he forgot whether it was good or not. I always noticed this place because they have this very unique, traditional looking door. When we walked in, they have extremely high ceilings, which was a shocker to me because from the entrance it looks like it'll have an average ceiling height. Their interior is nicely decorated with Japanese posters all over the walls. At the bar area they also have the food menu at the top but its all written in Japanese words. I don't know the background of this restaurant or whether it is Japanese owned or not, BUT the waiter who was helping us was legit Japanese. There is always free parking along the side streets or there is pay parking at the front of the restaurant.
It's been 6+ years since I last ate at Tairyou Ichiba!! Finally ate here again on a Monday afternoon with my parents and we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of their ingredients! From the things we ordered, our favourite was the Kaki Fry Set. The deep fried oysters were soooo fat and creamy and juicy!!
Always great. Sometimes slow when busy but overall the food always makes up for it. The seared hamachi toro and Dekka! Negitoro rolls (XL) are my personal faves
Amazing food with great prices!. Kura was one of my favorite authentic Japanese joint in the Burnaby area, and I was heartbroken when it closed down. Hearing that it'll be another Japanese restaurant, I was pretty reluctant to try as Kura still lingered in my mind.
There I was one sunny afternoon prior to my late shift, my friend & I decided to try out their lunch menu. We were amazed at how busy it was, and how the décor has changed so much. With huge posters of traditional Japanese fishing plastered on one wall, to drama & movie show ads hung frame by frame on the other. Jackpot! Another authentic Japanese joint, it's music to my ears to hear the waitress & chef speak Japanese. We were greeted and seated right away closer to the entrance, but none the less was served promptly and swiftly with tea and utensils. Looking through the menu I wanted to try everything. From negitoro don, katsudon to deep fried oyster, which one do I choose?!
In the end, I had chirashi don & my friend got negitoro don. Both were fresh and a decent sized portion with salad & miso.
I was happy with the lunch menu and decided to try the dinner menu the following day. Little did I know, I came four day straight bringing different people each day. For dinner, they had nigiri that ranged from $.99 to $2 as well as fresh catch of the day made into sashimi! (check out my pics) My all time must have is the ankimo, aburi toro nigri and chicken karaage. Aburi toro charred perfectly, gleaming with it's natural oils just begging to be eaten. The karaage comes in 4 large pieces. Each piece crispy, tender, moist and piping hot, served with mayo and hot sauce at the side. Need I say more? the food speaks for itself.
Service wise, a few waitress have trouble understanding English and got our orders wrong a few times. Make sure to ask them to repeat the order back to you.
Good value for money. We were regular customers of Kura, which occupied this spot on Kingsway for years. When Kura disappeared we were sad, because we didn't think anything could come close to matching the experience.
We decided to give Tairyou Ichiba a try after walking and driving past it numerous times. It's not Kura, but it does have an amazing choice of foods and dishes.
I couldn't find a Spicy Tuna Sashimi, which is my constant in all sushi restaurants, but I was more than happy with the assortment of foods that I did try.
Between us we had four pieces of salmon sushi, two pieces of prawn sushi, Spinach Gomae, Shrimp Sunomono, a bowl of Japanese pickles, Seaweed Salad, and a serving of Tuna Sashimi and another of Salmon Sashimi. We also each drank a Diet Coke.
The sushi was $1.00 apiece, and for that price we anticipated a small serving. It was small, but good value for the price - which you can't beat. The sashimi dishes each had four good cuts of fish, not overly generous, but again, good value for the money, and they tasted very fresh.
I loved the assortment of Japanese pickles. Other than the usual slices of yellow pickled radish, I'm not sure what I was eating, but it was a cornucopia of unusual tastes, and I really enjoyed it.
The Shrimp Sunomono came with an interesting collection of toppings, and the shrimp was large.
In total, and without tax and tip, the total came to about $36, which I think is an incredibly good deal for a light dinner for two. They have a huge drinks menu, but we decided not to have anything alcoholic as we wanted to keep the price down.
The staff and indeed, most of the customers, were Japanese, which I think is always a good comment on the quality and popularity of a sushi restaurant. Most also seemed to be 20-somethings, but that might have had something to do with the time of day (9.30pm on a Saturday night).
The service was a tiny bit slow, but the waitresses were attentive and friendly. We'd go there again.
A Small & Friendly Place. Friday lunch - Maki Combo B ($12.50) & Sashimi Bento Box ($12)
Good portions and nice quality. The servers were polite with friendly smiles. Oh yes, they're all Japanese.
Lucky to know that there is such a nice place around this area.
Will go again to try their dinner menu.
Welcome the Japanese Seafood Warehouse. The place used to be Kura Sushi before it switched hands and aimed for a Izakaya approach. Like the Warehouse restaurants at downtown, it aimed to serve cheap pub food but with a Japanese flair, so how does it compare?
Well let's just say I am well damn satisfied.
The interior has a real sense of authenticity combined with a comfortable "anything goes" feeling to the restaurant, the barefoot seating can be split to two 6 sitters or a 14 party table and you feel really comfortable sitting there like a feudal era pub.
Speaking of pub, the food at the restaurant while somewhat average is rather competitive in price, 1 dollar Nigiri sushi to satisfy your appetite with salmon sushi being equally priced with the difference in texture. Takoyaki feels like a delicous greasy ball of octopus to go with beer or sake. The sake definitely feels plentiful for a glass as it was worth about 2 glasses worth of alcohol per drink.
Would recommend to anyone wanting an authentic Japanese experience in Burnaby and want to drink as Hyoga during the time of the review didn't had a alcoholic menu
When they first took over from Kura, maybe that week, me and my friend went and tried it out. Didnt like it. So fastforward few months later, and decide to give it one more shot, since i used to goto Kura all the time. wow, what an improvement! The food is great, portions are nice. Wild salmon sashimi is a must. The spicy tuna roll is delish!
waitresses are nice.
I think its one of the better sushi joints in burnaby, and i like that its run by japanese.
Finally a good izakaya Japanese in Burnany. $1 fresh Nigiri !!!! Grilled / BBQ food are delicious, you can barely find this kind of Jap food & also reasonable price in the Burnaby area! Sashimi is very fresh but slight above our budget...come here order one sapporo beer and one Saba grill fish + other side dishes is truly enjoyment on Friday night.
Tairyou Ichiba is located on Kingsway right besides Bubble World. Since it was only a 5 minutes walk from my house, I quickly grabbed lunch here before school. COMPLIMENTARY MISO SOUP SALMON DON ($9.80) - 2.5/6.0 consisted of 7 pieces of thinly sliced salmon sashimi on top of the "over-seasoned" sushi rice. The part of salmon they used had some tougher muscle fibers so that it was rather chewy than soft. Although I finished the salmon, I couldn't eat the sush irice because it was way too salty to me. ABURI SUSHI (SALMON AND TORO) ABURI SUSHI (IKA, EBI, SABA) Aburi Sushi was simply amazing. Each piece had a great soft texture and nice flavour. My favourite was toro, salmon and ika. The mayo on top of ika was such a good combination. I loved Tairyou's Aburi sushi so much that I had to order again after school. Yes, I am celebrating Lunar New Year's Eve alone. Still happy with my Aburi sushi! #InstagramPhoto #FollowMe @sophiaeats.ca PROS + Best aburi sushi ever CONS - Salty sushi rice (but it tastes better with Aburi sushi, trust me!) - Salmon Don was quite disappointing RATING Food 5.0/6.0 (Aburi sushi) Overall, 3.5/6.0 Ambience 3.5/6.0 Service 3.0/6.0 Price $, $$ *Closed Tuesday *Open til 12am
