Went here with a group of friends for all you can eat for lunch. This place was a decision between here and magic sushi, and I am very glad we went here instead. There seemed to be a lot of options for all you can eat lunch, and the price seemed okay. I like how the server would bring our orders as it was made (we would order between our group 6-8 things at once, and receive them half the order at a time as they made it) so we did not go long periods without food. However this did make it hard to gauge how much food to order, as we did forget about how we ordered a roll or two that came out later. The quality of sushi seemed quite good, however rolls with wasabi seemed to never have enough wasabi in them, and we were never given enough wasabi or ginger with our food. Towards the end of our meal it seemed like our orders were taking longer to come out; I am not sure if this was the establishment trying to limit how much we ate or if they were trying to convince us to leave, but it was noticeably slower and no more patrons were entering the restaurant it seemed.
Great option for those who want all you can eat sushi/japanese food and don't want to trek all the way down pembina (IGI). REALLY good beef short ribs, I could justify the all you can eat price alone if they would let me order a whole plate. The sushi is very good for all you can eat, but the sushi rice is not as soft/fresh as other restaurants. The sashimi is amazing as well...
If you're hungry, THIS IS YOUR SPOT! For a reasonable price, sushi gen offers an all you can eat with an intense variety of sushi and sides! I love coming here, I never leave this restaurant unhappy!
Grabbed an order of takeout and ordered a combo box with a couple rolls, salad, and soup. It was fresh, tasty, and worth the price! I have heard horrible things about the service but since that wasn't an issue for me, I really enjoyed the experience. Way too much food for just me.
Apparently the prices were raised and not advertised so I'm a little upset about that because I ended up paying more than I was expecting but the value was still there regardless.
I'd order again!
It's super close to my work, so it makes for a nice lunch break to run down and grab a roll or two and salad! Always quick and right in the budget!
Slow Service - Uneducated on food allergies. We really enjoyed the food and the presentation, however the servers are not interested in ensuring we are having a good or timely experience.
The first issue we had was explaining my mom's gluten allergies, the first server didn't understand english at all. She then asked another staff member to come speak with us, he also did not understand what the allergy was and asked us to spell "wheat"; We were explaining that anything with wheat flour will contain gluten. Eventually I had to tell him what ingredients typically contain wheat, it was very confusing and frustrating. The second issue was getting actual service and ordering our food. All four of us opted for the all-you-can-eat menu. It took some time before the server came to get our first order. Once our food came they did not provide us with another order sheet and did not come back to check on drinks or the food. They also never once asked us if we wanted more to order food. This happened consecutively as we made multiple orders, I finally had to go up to the front of the restaurant and request a new order form and more tea. They actually seemed confused. The experience was so frustrating, and my brother was actually getting angry because he needs to be fed in a timely fashion. The long waits between food orders and asking to get service must cost the restaurant so many sales. We had to sit there for so long to get enough food and spent very little on extra drinks because no-one came to ask us if we needed anything. Also just as we were leaving a couple came in to eat and asked us about the wait times, we told them honestly the service was rather slow and because they had somewhere to be within the hour they walked out to find a faster food source. Despite the fact that the food was prepared well and the food quality was excellent we would be hard pressed to go back anytime soon.
Good Food, Horrible Service. I have been to Sushi Gen a few times, both for lunch and dinner, and have always enjoyed the food. Personally, I don't eat a lot of food so it is not worth ordering off the all you can eat menu. I always order from the regular menu, pay about $14 and am satisfied with the amount of food.
While I have never been disappointed with the food quality, the service has always been bad. I have had a great deal of difficulty ordering several times (one waitress didn't know what a California roll was) and have had to return food that was made incorrectly. The waiting times to order and receive food have also been an issue. We once ordered chicken balls, and though we asked 4 times throughout our meal, we did not receive them until almost an hour later when we were ready to leave.
I return to this restaurant because I enjoy the food, but the service only gets worse each time and so I think it is time to find a new sushi place to frequent downtown.
Great food! But bad customer service. Only 3 servers the whole night and it wasn't for their dragging on with time and slow customer service, we wouldn't have reached the 2 hour limit.
Was sceptical about an all u can eat place. Great food! Will be returning for sure.
One of my favourites in the city!. I was so surprised that this place has awful reviews on Urbanspoon that I had to chime in with how great I think this place is! The all you can eat menu is great for sushi beginners, but the menu is too large for descriptions so if you're wondering what's in something, just ask the waiters! If they're not 100% they'll go ask the chef, and on a slow day once the chef even came to our table! By the way, I've never had issues with inattentive service at Sushi Gen. We usually make two orders from the menu when we go, the first one is usually sashimi and appetizers and the next is sushi and other items. There's almost constantly a dish our group has selected coming out of the kitchen this way, and the server usually checks our drinks whenever they're dropping something off too. I believe there's a 2 hour dining limit on the AYCE, but we've never had an issue reaching the limit.
The sashimi is always a great choice (My favourites are butterfish and salmon) and their hand rolls are always fresh and crisp. If sushi pizza's your thing, Sushi Gen makes it well! The "crust" is usually pretty crispy and not greasy at all like some places can be. In addition to the great sushi staples on the all you can eat menu, it also has a huge kitchen menu with tons of tempura dishes, katsu and stir frys!
I come to this restaurant pretty often, and it's been consistently good. I think there was one time (Out of several) that it wasn't as good as it normally is, but it wasn't offensively horrible or anything, just an off day, which happens at any restaurant. Someone else had a complaint about not being seated near their fellow white people too. Why is that a problem for non-racists? Oh, wait. I guess a better question would be why, as a racist, should you be entitled to enjoy japanese food?
Good Lunch spot. Not a bad little sushi place. Modern inside, service is a bit slow. The food was OK good little spot for lunch.
You get nice sashimi chunks in the all you can eat menu. Salmon, tuna, butterfish. I'm a regular and I always enjoy myself.
All you can eat sushi. The sushi isn't the best quality in the city but it'll do for a quick fix. Seriously a LARGE all you can eat menu compared to other places. Decent fish for the price and the sushi always taste fresh.
I love this place. Great sushi, many options. The all you can eat option is fantastic when you can't decide. Kind staff.
Mmm. Compared to other sushi restaurants, this is by far my favourite. Although it's frustrating to know that every time I visit, the price is always different. For all you can eat for dinner, it used to be 17.99, then 20.99 then 24.99, I think, those are approximates. I'm not a sushi expert but I thought the food is fantastic and there are a lot to choose from compared to others.
You get what you pay for.. It's not the best sushi I've had, by any means. But we definitely got our $ worth. The service was slow, but we weren't in a hurry. It's nothing to write home about, but we'd probably go again. It's in a convenient location.
Love the eat-all-you-can in this place, especially the tempura. Not the best sushi out there but you definitely get more than your money's worth. Service may be slow at times, especially during nights.
Regular Menu Dining.... After looking at the AYCE menu I decided to just go with a few select items off their regular menu. I am a tuna lover and there was no tuna to be found on the AYCE ?
I began to order the Gold Sashimi Plate $17.99, the Sushi Gen Kani Salad Roll $9.99, the Sushi Gen Salmon Salad Roll $9.99 and my waiter, quite concerned, stopped me saying in broken English that my order was expensive so I should instead order the AYCE for a better value !! I explained to him that I was interested in some "quality" sushi....meaning fish, not rice and filler !! He understood what I was getting at and agreed ! I also ordered the Vegetable Tempura appetizer $5.75.
Before any of my food came I was served a complimentary miso soup and starter green salad with miso dressing. Both were very nice.
The sashimi came next and it was OK as far as taste of the fish but the amebi were teeny tiny smaller than my pinkie as well the tai was cut in very thin, small bits. The salmon & tuna were the stellar pieces on this plate.
Vegetable tempura followed and I enjoyed this very much. It reminded me of real Japanese tempura from restaurants in Vancouver.
Next came the two rolls I ordered. Neither of them were rolled with rice and were very refreshing. I think I may have enjoyed the Kani roll the best though as it was tobiko, avocado, clam & crab rolled in cucumber with a ring of Japanese mayo on the top.
Service from the all male wait staff was minimally adequate and polite, though no one inquired to see if I liked my food or not.
Prices were a little on the high side.
Sushi chefs here are all Chinese.
AYCE prices have gone up to 24.99 w/d/ 23.99 w/e for dinner.
I went today for the first time (for take out). Aside from some slightly slow service, I didn't mind it. I actually didn't eat my sushi until almost 4 hours later and it tastes amazing. I ordered some california rolls and dynamite rolls. Honestly better than Mooshiro which is where I normally get take out from. Atmosphere was nice. I can't wait to go back an dine-in!!
Great food, mostly awful service. My colleagues and I come here for the all-you-can-eat lunch buffet on a regular basis, perhaps a few times a month. There is an interesting variety of food, including sushi and other Japanese dishes, and if you don't like seafood -- like me - there's plenty to enjoy. We can't really understand why others are complaining about the food: we've like everything we've tried -- the food IS good.
HOWEVER,
-- and it's a big capital letter HOWEVER with friggin' marching ants around it because it's getting annoying and we really wish management did something about it --
do NOT come here expecting good service, because you most likely won't be getting it.
If it were only the fact that they forget one or two items e-ve-ry ti-me (making you wonder if it's on purpose, to save money), it might be fine, but the real trouble is that half the waitresses are downright rude or have no manners whatsoever.
While we sometimes meet really nice, pleasant gals, all too often, the waitresses can be rude and completely lack manners. The managers at the till are no better. This is not a one-time deal - we've been regular customers for months. Actually, we keep wondering if we aren't the dumb ones for returning time after time.
Recently, there's been this one waitress in particular we are literally crossing our fingers she isn't the one serving us. Today, she yelled across the room to another waitress. Last time, a man came in and was sat at a booth by a male employee, and several minutes later, she started yelling at the customer that he couldn't sit there and that he had to move because it was reserved. You'd think you could do this discreetly and pleasantly, and perhaps even compensate him with a drink, but we felt uncomfortable just watching the whole scene. Another time, there was no tea and after asking for the reason more than once, she finally explained in the most cavalier way possible that she had no idea when we'd be getting any, if at all.
Food? Excellent.
Service? Not so much.
Good quality for all-you-can eat, service so-so. I find the quality of the sushi served at Sushi Gen to be higher than most other Winnipeg all-you-can-eat sushi places, with maki rolls that have generous portions of filling, and other menu items of high quality. The crunchy salmon roll, and the bbq'd salmon belly are winners if you're a salmon lover like me.
I didn't care for their sushi pizza - the fried rice patty is too thick and glutinous, and the two times I've ordered it the raw fish has been placed on the hot rice too quickly after it's been removed from the fryer, which ends up in that creepy situation where you're eating room temperature raw fish, which to me is quite unpleasant.
The service is a tad on the slow side, although friendly and helpful, leaving gaps between service where you are just sitting there with nothing to eat or drink while you wait for the service to catch up.
Great food, slowwww service. My tea is empty AGAIN! I'm not asking anymore, I'm just letting the percentage of tip decrease as the time clicks away... It's not even busy. The food was pretty good though! Loved the pizza!
Soooo good! so far.. I recently had this restaurant introduced to me by a dear friend. He said it was good...which was slightly understated.
I went on a Saturday afternoon with 2 friends for the AYCE lunch. We were all more than pleasantly surprised with the options available.
I have to say that we all ate until we were almost in a Sushi coma.. the choice of hot options, soups, tempura, etc..was a nice change from the usual AYCE places. The sushi and hand rolls were tasty and not with rice-overkill. The salmon was buttery and tasty too!
Everything tasted fresh...and the service was very very good.
Only complaint was that the server did not tell us which rolls were which when he brought a large tray to the table...but our tastebuds figured it all out soon enough.
I would highly recommend this for AYCE.
And have the red bean ice cream...its really good!
All you can eat goodness. I went here with a few friends because we were craving sushi. We did the all you can eat sushi for $22.99. I typically steer clear of all you can eat sushi because usually its not very good quality. Here there was a good selection. The volcano roll and the spider roll weren't very good. The sushi pizza here is different... not good or atleast not what I expected. The short ribs here or to die for! The shrimp tempura were big and tasty. We had a variety of sashimi but the butterfish was still frozen in the middle ... All in all we ate alot of food for what we paid. I will return here when I want to binge eat sushi. The servers were very sweet and soft spoken.
As you walk down the south side of Portage Avenue between the Bay and where Broadway joins Portage you’ll find a couple of all you can eat Sushi restaurants. So far the sushi places I have tried have been off the main drag, so I decided I wanted to give them a try. I started off with Sushi Gen which is just across from the University of Winnipeg. The decor of Sushi Gen is typical of any number of modern restaurants, with the added distinction of having a small alcove where you can remove your shows and dine in traditional Japanese style. For the sake of the other patrons I kept my shoes on and chose a table. Sushi Gen offers two all you can eat buffets. The lunch buffet is $16.99 and the dinner buffet is $25.99. You also have a two hour table limit to enjoy the buffet. Compared to the prices and quantities served at other sushi restaurants I’ve been to, I’d say you need to bring a reasonably healthy appetite with you if you wish to get
