Tom Yum Thai is one of those restaurants I’ve often passed, but never entered. As a bus rider, I find that getting to North of Portage, where I live in the West End, back to North of Portage on Main is often as a trip, as convoluted as this sentence. As a result, I generally walk when I go to such places as Stephanchew’s Church Goods, or to visit the Exchange District.
There aren't a lot of restaurants near HSC hospital but this at the corner of William and Sherbrook is pretty decent for Thai food. Their spice level is serious so if you choose 7 or higher it is spicy! I had 8 once and it was pretty spicy - the kind that's still good but you're getting a runny nose and drinking lots of water and I have a decent heat tolerance. I'll go with 6 and it's just right.
There's a lunch time buffet but it doesn't appeal to me so I usually share a few dishes with friends. The green curry, red curry, panang curry and pad thai are all decent. They all average about $10 per dish when you select chicken or beef.
Service is fast and efficient.
I have volunteered at the Children’s Hospital here in Winnipeg for a number of years. Many hours on the job are spent snuggling a baby and staring out the window. In doing so, I have often wondered about Tom Yum Thai that is often within my gaze at corner of Sherbrook St. & William Ave. Recently, the opportunity to discover more about the restaurant, presented itself.
Great lunch combos. I enjoy going here for lunch as it is close to my workplace. Small restaurant but the food is fantastic.
Best Thai curries that I've tried in Winnipeg. Service is quick and friendly. Definitely one of my fave places to eat!
Never had thai food before. But tried tomyum last week. Got the pad see yoo and it was amazing! Very friendly staff and good value. Highly recommend!
LOVE LOVE LOVE!. My fiance and I are going to Thailand next summer and so we deiced to try as many Thai restaurants in Winnipeg before we leave. After trying a few we ended up at Tom Yum. This place is amazing. The food is EXCELLENT, service is great, portions are big, price is low. We will defiantly be repeat customers. Everything about Tom Yum is Fantastic!!!
I love discovering small, independent restaurants and Tom Yum is a true gem! When we were ready to order, my date and I mentioned that we were in a bit of a hurry and our waitress was very helpful in steering us away from an entree that required a more lengthily prep. The food was on our table less than 10 minutes after we ordered it. While this was helped by the fact that we arrived just after the lunch rush, I was very happy that they made sure we weren't going to miss our appointment.
Between us we ordered the cashew nut chicken w/ rice, a spicy prawn noodle dish and the crab bundles.
The chicken dish was mild on spice but with a strong, savory flavor. The chicken (all white meat) was soft and incredibly juicy. Some of the best chicken I've had in any Asian dish. The veggies were diced and added a nice colorful crunch to the meal. The cashews were abundant and just the right amount of salty.
The prawn dish brought the heat. My lips are still tingling a bit and I'm not known to shy away from spice. Wide egg noodles and big chunks of cauliflower, broccoli, and peppers were all cooked just right. I counted 10 large prawns on the plate which came as a big surprise. Too often when you order a prawn dish at a restaurant you are left searching for more than three!
Finally, the crab blossoms were my highlight. A crab and cream cheese mixture, stuffed into a wonton wrapper and then deep fried. Served with a mild peanut sauce, these little crab blossoms were incredible and I would come back just for them.
The bill, with tip, came to just under 30 dollars. We were both stuffed and I left with enough spicy noodles to supply my lunch again tomorrow!
Friendly service, great food and very reasonable prices make Tom Yum a must visit. I'll be going back!
Tom Yummy!!. My partner and I have been here several times and it has been solid every time. We went there this past Friday and ordered Tom Kha soup, Green Curry, and Pad Thai. All three dishes were packed with flavour! If you are looking for authentic Thai food this is the place to go. Tom Yum Thai is one of the best Thai restaurants in the city. Whenever my partner and I eat here, there's never any other customers, and it makes me sad. I feel that this restaurant should be bumping, as it's pretty darn solid!!
Thai food from the mall is a lot better than this place. It's over-priced for the portion and quality of the food.
Great Veggie Summer Rolls. Stopped in for a quick lunch while in the neighbourhood. They have a lunch buffet ($8.99) set up which had honey chicken, green curry pork, veggie fried rice, fried soft noodles, spring rolls, fried wontons, stir fried mixed vegetables and wonton soup this day. It looked "OK "but I opted to have veggie summer rolls and green curry tofu soup with a 7/10 spiciness. The soup was delicious and spicy full of bamboo shoots, green & red peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, thai basil, galangal and tofu. The summer rolls were cool, crisp and fresh coming with a sweet peanut sauce for dipping, a perfect accompaniment to the hot soup. I also tried the sticky rice dessert with ice cream which I also enjoyed and left me absolutely stuffed !!
