One great Chinese restaurant in the city. The place is tucked in a strip mall along Pembina behind A & W before the bridge going south. The dinner for 2 was tasty and delicious- just the right portion size. Service was friendly and fast. Parking can be a bit of a challenge. Be back.
My family and I have been coming here for dinner for several years now. They are generally super busy on Friday and weekend nights. The quality of food and reasonable prices makes this place very popular.
We came on a weekday evening and the restaurant was consistently 70% full throughout our stay. I like Huang Pu River because they have some very authentic Sichuan food and Cantonese Food dishes. Many of my favorite dishes from both styles of cooking can be found here. They also have a lunch buffet that is pretty reasonable, but with so much selection nearby, I wouldn't go out of my way to come here for that.
The only fault of this restaurant is the service. It's just that there simply isn't enough wait staff out front to cope and this is pretty consistent amongst my experiences coming here. The strange thing is, the backside of the house seems to keep up no problem. So as long as you're not in a rush, this place is worth a try.
The food here is genuinely good and the portion sizes are large so they offer exceptional value. They also offer a complementary dessert which is extremely rare nowadays.

This place is great! My mom brought my boyfriend and I here for dinner and the food was fantastic! The portions are huge and definitely worth the money! We will definitely coming back here!
Near the University of Manitoba, Asian restaurants (Chinese, Japanese, and S. Korean) are popping up everywhere due to the high number of international students in the area. A couple weeks ago, my friend invited me, for the second time, to Huang Pu River restaurant (1875 Pembina Highway) where you can order a dish of Spicy Fish with bean sprouts or noodles the size of your head!
Service can be slow but trust me, it's worth the wait (and it's not always slow either, hit and miss basically). Favourite dishes include the green beans with ground pork (ask for them to make it spicy if you like things hot, it's amazing), Cantonese chow mein, and possibly the best approximation of Oceana Chicken since that restaurant closed, hot honey chicken (it's moderately spicy as is, but again, they'll make it hotter if you ask). The shrimp dishes (salt and pepper, sweet and sour, etc) use large, succulent shrimps, and the breaded fish in ginger sauce is crispy and fresh.
The restaurant is clean and comfortable, and the prices very reasonable. Also, if you're placing a small takeout order (2-3 dishes), they usually get it done very quickly, like 20 minutes max if you're ordering pre/post dinner rush, and 30 at dinner time.
great restaurant! my favorite Asia restaurant. Especially the dessert they provides after the dinner.
I like the spicy food there such as mapo tofu and pork with pepper.
if you're looking for outstanding service, dont go here. if you're looking for probably one of the best melt-in- your mouth breaded fish with ginger sauce and you're up for looking past terrible service for this piece of heaven, then this is the place for you.
This is the type of restaurant you need patience for. It is busy for dinner, so be prepared to wait for your order. My boyfriend and I easily waited an hour before our food finally made it to our table, but it was worth it. The assorted tripe hot pot and mapo tofu arrived fresh and piping hot. Again, totally worth the wait!
I love their golden chicken wings. I crave them all the time! Their service can be a bit slow at times though. Their buffet is alright, but not the greatest. However, it includes the golden chicken wings so that brings their rating up a bit. When you order off of the menu, the food is amazing! Very authentic. They have 2 sets of menus. One menu is authentic Chinese food, and the other menu is in English and contains food that everyone knows and loves.
Been there a few times; great buffet lunch at a great price! Hot and great tasting with good hospitality friendly people. Waiting to have a supper here.
This place is consistently delicious. The prices are decent, and average however the serving sizes are huge and you get lots of food! Pan fried shrimp, ginger beef and hot honey lemon chicken are a few really good dishes! The small six dollar soup is massive. Love this place. Friendly staff and great service.
Love the food here. If you want to have Authentic chinese food this is the place. The quantities are huge so go with friends. Brought back memories from back home when we used to share food at restaurants. Thanks you Huangpu river team great job.
We've ordered from there twice now and each time the food is delicious! Quickly becoming my favourite for Chinese food in the south end of Winnipeg. The breaded shrimps are my new favourite. The meat used in their dishes like fried rice, lo mein and ginger beef is quality.
Excellent place to eat. Clean dining area (I heard the washrooms are as well), friendly staff, and the food is pretty good - just all around great!
Delicious Chinese food! I order from here once or twice every two weeks. Their pho with beef and kale is the best! The price is fair and you can tell the food is fresh and in good quality. I’ve never tried anything else yet but I think they nailed this one.
