Review India Palace Restaurant - Winnipeg

Jitendradas Loves-Life
India Palace is so fantastic! I’m eating it right now, and the Aloo Gobi is so so good, and the samosas always taste fresh and good. Thanks for the amazing food friends. Thought I’d leave you a review today. Eaten your food many times, but, today is the day I celebrate you. Om Shanti Shanti Shanti

Dine in was ok but not incredible. Food was less spicy than most Indian food I've had. Service was great. Take home samosas were amazing.

I love BHATURA here, butter chicken was good but too spicy for me, next time I'll order mild. Food was good and not expensive, staff was friendly, I definitely will come again.

I just bought a bhatura thali from there and there waiting time is 36 minutes for one thali even they don’t have much customer there’s just 4 people for dine in and the bhatura is less cooked and too much oily you can see a photo no dessert and they charged me 19 dollar for that

Yummy Butter Chicken! Nice chicken breast without bones in a creamy sauce. Veggie samosa's are also really delicious!

India Palace has been around for many years. They offer good value for your buck. Their food is tasty. Their lunch buffet is popular.

Delivering love in the form of food, going an extra mile in terms of service.
I am an Indian residing in India. My younger brother has recently moved to MB CN, to a place where there is absolutely zero possibility for getting anything delivered to him. I had been trying to find out atleast 1 grocery store, or restaurant, or cafe, or any store for that matter who would help me send something to him on the special occasion of Raksha Bandhan (it is a festival in India that celebrates bonding of siblings). I took help from one of my friends who is residing in Toronto to find me atleast one place that could help me make my little brother feel special 1000 miles apart. But all in vain, until he spoke to Ashwini Kumar from this restaurant - our last hope. Not to miss, I was looking for something to be delivered on 3rd Aug, which was also a local holiday in some parts of the country. However, India Palace, did not only accept our order but also took efforts in helping us deliver my brother's favorite food at his doorstep, in person, which was nearly 25kms away from the restaurant, in the right time. Usually I am sure no other delivery apps would have accepted this request at all. I am very very thankful to Ashwini for going out of their way to provide such an exceptional service and being a part of making our Raksha Bandhan so precious. We will forever remember this. All the dishes that were delivered - Chola, Malai Kofta, Naan, Rice - were all authentic in taste as well, very delicious. A very rare thing to find in CN in terms of original Indian taste as told to me by my brother.
- A very very happy and satisfied customer from India :)
Had a takeout meal with friends and enjoyed everything. The Butter Chicken is outstanding, tender and flavourful. Paneer with peas and raita also great. Want to return to try more from the menu.

We just happened to be nearby and thought we'd try the place and we were not disappointed. They have an all-you-can-eat buffet during certain hours which is DEFINITELY worth the price. The à la carte prices are also good compared to other Indian places and, overall, the portions were good and everything was delicious.

This restaurant has the worst service ever!!!! They told us that the restaurant was open until 10pm but at 9 pm they started to vacuum. They took away our food without asking with their winter coats on. The servers clearly wanted to go home early. The food was not that great, it was re-heated so many times that the chicken was rubber. We should have left without paying

The buffet could be a lot fresher, but it is a buffet at a small restaurant and I dont expect it to be the best. But the food off the menus that you can order specifically is amazing. The chicken curry is my personal favourite. Although the mild versions are a little bland the medium and hot versions on their beautifully cooked basmati rice will wow you. I also LOVE their samosas. Some of the best I've had and the sauce is perfectly sweet. All in all the service is also wonderful. The employees are friendly and nice and I would definitely recommend.

One of the rare instances where you get good value for incredible food. The pricing is super reasonable but you can still expect high quality dishes. The buffet looks small but has all you need. Absolutely delicious. A contender for best Indian food in Winnipeg.

March 11th 2016

Do not go here!! How does this place have good reviews? I hate leaving a bad review however, I have gave this place waaay too many chances.
The goat curry was inedible it was so tough, same with the tandoor chicken. They ran out of rice at lunch hour and did not fill it for close to 15 minutes, also they ran out of samosas and never did refill while we were there. The service was rude and actually made a guy stand and wait for a table for 10 minutes because she wouldn't clean any of the empty dirty tables and there probably about 6 of them. She did not appear to be busy and kept disappearing.
Also, 2 customers kept going up to the buffet with their same dirty plate, absolutely disgusting. I understand that is not the restaurants fault but that is when the server should step in and explain for them to take a new plate each time.
I will never go here again. Ever.

-----

Came here for lunch today, my partner and I had the lunch buffet. I had the beef curry, chickpea curry, butter chicken, tandoori chicken and basmati rice. I found the beef curry tasty-it had great spice, however it was very tough and there were waay too many bones, I understand that there is some bones in a beef lamb or goat curry but this curry had more bone than meat. The tandoori chicken was very very dry and overcooked. The butter chicken was okay, it was cooked well but not a good as sauce as I've had at other Indian restaurants. The chickpea curry was okay, I found the Indian spices really toned down and bland. And the rice was just rice. Also, we ordered a garlic naan which was not included with the buffet price, but oh my, it was excellent naan. I can't comment on the service as we had the buffet. Like another reviewer had said, it's a good restaurant if you like toned down Indian fare. All in all, it was okay but I'm not sure I'd be back.

Been here before, will NOT go again. Very disappointed with poor service, especially from the woman who appeared to be the owner. They messed up the order, blamed me, refused to offer any compensation, and were condescending the entire time.

Food was pretty good, but overpriced and small quantities. There are better options in town for Indian food.

Went here for the lunch buffet. The website said lunch was $10.99, but upon paying the bill, it was $15 (plus tip) which is the cost of the dinner buffet. I'm not sure if the dinner buffet is more like $17 now, or if they are both the same price - either way it is definitely not $10.99 for the lunch buffet.
I found the flavors to be lacking something. Everything from the butter chicken to the veggies just lacked flavor. Samosa was really dry. This would be a great place to take someone who has never tried Indian food because it's very toned down / westernized.

The one stand-out was the veggie korma + naan bread which they made fresh. I would have been happy with just a plate of those two. On a positive note, Indian food usually upsets my stomach (possibly a spice they use) and this didn't. If you want more food for your dollar, I would suggest East India Co. as they charge the same price for the lunch buffet and there is a much bigger selection. Not much to say about the service, our server was good but not exactly friendly. I wouldn't refuse to go back with friends, however if I had a choice I would pick another place for a lunch buffet.

Good food. The only issue I have is that after years of ordering from them I now get charged a $10 delivery fee as their limit is apparently 3.5KM when i live 3.6KM away from them. Also menu and website do not mention any fees for delivery, quite the contrary... it mentions they deliver on orders over $25. Other then the exorbitant delivery charge, the food is OK. maybe next time they can meet me down the street which should make it 3.5KM away from them.

Everything here is tasty, and the staff are quite friendly! The butter chicken is arguably the best in the city!

The restaurant I eat at the most.. Just about once a month, I gather up some co-workers and head out to India Palace. The food is always consistently good. The have free desert and sweets that you can buy for taking home. To add zip to my food, I often add some of the hot pickles. I only wish the west Portage area of Winnipeg had an Indian restaurant. This may be the closest one.

One thing I dislike about some restaurants is how loud they can be. In places like Earl's, you can't really hear any conversation beyond the people sitting one either side of you. Not so at this place.

I've been going for years and will keep on going.

You learn something new each day. Had the lunch buffet. Was tasty but could use less salt in many of the dishes. The tandoori chicken is one of the better ones in town.Good value for the money.Apparently none of the staff receive the tip if you put the tip on your credit card, the owner keeps it!

Very disrespectful!!. When a restaurant owner drives a vehicle with their name all over it how they treat people on the road tells something about them. Let's just say their road manners tell me to stay away from this place!

Went for lunch buffet. $12.46 with tax. Waitress attractive. Desert was interesting. They shud get nicer water pitchers. Tandoor chicken tasted pretty good to me. The waitress shud be more friendly tho. Didn't ask once how i found the food, and didn't say thank you or have a nice day after i paid.

This place is the best Indian food in the city. Absolutely no other Indian restaurant compares. Thier veggie korma, and butter chicken is second to none! I would eat there every day if I could!

Mediocre Food -- Sub-par Service. We went to the buffet a little late on a Saturday night (certainly not close to closing time, which is fairly early at 9pm) -- restaurant was mostly empty and we expected "end of the night" buffet, and adjusted our expectations accordingly. The food was mediocre, but palatable. Selection was alright (butter chicken, palak paneer, vegetable curry, beef curry, tandoori chicken, etc.); basmati rice was greasy.
Our visit/dining would have been acceptable and we might have considered ordering take-out in future if not for the terrible service we experienced. We did not feel our business was appreciated as the wait staff was completely disinterested in our presence. They didn't give us a bill (we suspect they may have over-charged us, but we had no way to know for sure), didn't thank us or tell us to have a nice evening even though we did to them. Really, it was obvious they didn't want to be there or have the slightest interest in serving anyone (we weren't the last customers in the restaurant either).
On another note, food cleanliness appeared satisfactory, but the restaurant itself was dingy, dusty, and showed a general lack of maintenance (broken light fixtures, dusty/greasy fake flowers on the table). We will not be going back.

Awful. Way too much salt. Even the rice was salty. Ordered delivery and had to toss it out.

Food was great. Portions were extremely small, especially for the price. Service was poor, order was not taken properly.

Unforgivable. I've been eating at India Palace for close to 10 years, and get takeout from there regularly. Several times the food has been so greasy I literally had to throw it out, but most of the time it is delicious. I recently ordered takeout and one of the dishes (potato and eggplant curry) was completely inedible. The eggplant was hard as a rock, I couldn't even get my fork into it. I called to inform them of this and the owner (who answered) hung up on me. I order the same thing every few weeks, she acknowledges me when I walk through the door, she surely knew who I was when I called, and this is how she chose to treat a regular customer. I will not go back.

Good enough. Not spectacular, but good enough.
I go there more out of convenience than anything else.
Better than Charisma, but they're no Clay Oven : )

Bottom rung Indian food. No paneers in the dishes even though it says so on the labels. Cheaply made with surprising little flavour. The naan is decent but please...good naan does not a good eatery make. If you actually enjoy this place then you most likely have very little experience with Indian food. A pass...in so many ways.
Bob
Meh. I used to go there all the time until i found another place and couldn't believe the difference in food.

I was doing a job by here 2 weeks ago and will never go back after trying some of the other places in town.

All of the butter chicken is chicken legs and not breast like some others. It was all mushy and and stirred in together.

I also found the tandoori chicken was all legs as well and all over cooked dried out and mushy to..

Do your research and you will find there are allot better paces in town!

If you enjoy good quality Indian food, don't waste your time here. If you want to taste a lot of different (quickly and mass amount prepared), eat here.

After consuming Indian food prepared by the sous chef of Fairmont Banff Springs resort, this was a huge disappointment.

Thus is a very popular establishment, however I guarantee the best food here is the fresh naan bread... Otherwise just stay home :(

Alright. Checked out India Palace this evening. Fairly good reviews online, tried the buffet. Wasn't a fan of the rice with chicken broth base. Butter chicken was good with full peices of chicken. Naan bread made fresh comes to the table hot. Over all a good experience worth a visit, but will check out another place next time.

Hospitality of India. My partner and I just bought a condo in the WestEnd and one of the big attractions to the area is the variety of ethnic foods you can get in the neighbourhood. India Place was on the list of recommendations from friends of places to check out. I have to say as far as places to eat go we are off to a good start. The customer service for us was perfect the waiter made helpful suggestions and was quick to fill drink glasses; the hostess was wonderfully welcoming and sat us promptly. The food is good quality (tandoori chicken particularly good) and they don't skimp on the chicken at the buffet! First time I have ever seen butter chicken that came with whole chicken legs and thighs in it (mostly in Winnipeg butter chicken is chopped up chicken in sauce) The curries tend to be a bit more tomato based then other places. That is neither a good or bad comment on my part just what I noticed from eating the food. Nan was hot and fresh and it is one of the better prices for an Indian Buffet in Winnipeg. While I have heard of some complaints with other Indian establishments in the city shorting on takeout orders I don't think you would need to worry about that here they are happy to feed you loads and loads and don't seem the stingy sort, they even brought out food for customers after they were closed at a tables request. A+ for service and hearty Indian fair at a decent price. Will go again. The restaurant also boasts one of the cities newest murals, the side of the restaurant features the Dalai Lama in the foreground of a Taj Mahal back drop and it’s worth a quick gander.

Much Love
-The ChubbyDumpling

Not my Fave Anymore. I used to love this restaurant, back in the day when the food had more flavour, but lately it has been a disappointment. The butter chicken used to be much more flavourful, more garlic, more spices, and the chicken used to be whole pieces. Now they seem to be using what appears to be cubed pieces of chicken breast when they've run out of pieces. The veggie Korma on the buffet used to have paneer in it, and now it doesn't seem to. The samosas are always consistently good as well as the rice, but everything else seems to be ..... lacking. I noticed the flavour of the food had changed about a year or two ago and wondered if it was because of a different chef. Whatever the reason, I am now searching for a different restaurant. On my most recent visit, the owner asked me ( as per usual) how dinner was and I couldn't help but begin to tell her that the food had changed, when she practically finished my sentence. ( she already knew what I was going to say)
Hopefully she takes this to heart and brings back the flavours of the India Palace that I had come to know and love.

Friendly staff & excellent samosas.

Just wanted to chime in about one of may fave Indian Options. I have been going to this family-operated place for 20+ years.still my favourite take-out option. The buffet isn't bad either.not as many dishes as East India or Ivory but the quality is high.Count on tasty crispy somosas, palak paneer, veg korma, chick pea curry, beef curry, butter chicken, tandoori chicken, house-made pickle and if you are lucky you will get a complimentary fresh naan.If you are ordering take out, make sure you specify how spicy you like your dishes. It will likely be fairly mild if you don't ask for the heat.

Mmmmmmm. Love the veggie korma, butter chicken, and tandoori chicken, mmm!

HUH???!!!. Okay, these review could not have been written by actual Indians... the food here is okay, but only by Americanized standards and is in fact somewhat bland and has the taste of being mass produced for the most part. The staff are somewhat friendly, but it could be better. Over all, a good introduction for the newbie to Indian food and a fair place if you know what you are talking about.

Best Indian I've had so far. I've been to both big-chain Indian restaurants in the city as well as the smaller family-run restaurants, and of all of them, no place can beat this.

They have both buffet (every day of the week, including dinner) and menu offerings.

The buffet is what I tried, and I was pleasantly surprised by the selection. The best things in my opinion were the Samosa, the Curry Beef, and the Tandoori Chicken. Loved them.

There was also this thing on the buffet, I didn't catch the name of it, but it was made out of potato, was round like a patty, but more of a dumpling, and it was spicy. That had to be one of the greatest things I've eaten. This is one of the same items they give out at the fringe fest on the cart.

The staff was quick to clear plates and asked us numerous times if there was anything else we needed.

Now I've read on other sites that the decor was dated, but they obviously recently renovated the place because the decor was very modern. Everything looked new. If this is what people call dated, they're gravely mistaken! It wasn't in any kind of "70s style" or anything of the sort. Very nice environment to dine in.

Venture to West End to try this place. Definitely worth it, and the price is right for the amazing meal you get.

Not a good indian restaurant. We couple of friends( around 10 peoples )had food from India Palace,Ellice Ave,Winnipeg and the quality of food is not at all good.We are east Indian and what we found only few dishes are good and tasty, most of them not.The Nan they prepared with a fermented flour mix..So i dont refer it.I can give 1 or max 2 out of 5 points

Very good curries. I've been to India Palace quite a few times, both for the menu and the buffet. The buffet is quite good, albeit small, and has a lot of your standard Indian dishes in it that are done well. But the real gem of this restaurant isn't the buffet - it's one of those Indian restaurants where you're much better off ordering from the menu to really enjoy some delicacies.

Some of my highlights from the menu include the vegetable korma (filled with sweet raisins and tasty cashews), mutter paneer (homemade cheese and peas in a creamy curry sauce), and malai kofta (vegetarian balls in yet another creamy sauce - this one is a must-have). The vegetarian dishes are almost all fantastic, but the meat dishes are not to be missed! You will not be disappointed by any of the beef, lamb, chicken, or seafood dishes. The standard spice level is mild, which is good for new curry fans, but I prefer mine medium-spicy - just the perfect level of chili spice!

If you're adamant on enjoying the buffet, make sure to try a bit of everything - the vegetable curry is quite nice, and the butter chicken is as good as any I've had.

The naan is not the best that I've ever had (it's thin and dense and doesn't sop up as much curry as I'd like), but try the chappattis or veggie parathas for something new. If you're eating in the restaurant (which I recommend - it was newly remodeled and is quite lovely), make sure to try their Indian beer - surprisingly crisp and refreshing, and cuts right through the curry.
Mmmmfoodie
Delicious. The buffet is limited but everything is great and there is a good variation of veg. And meat dishes. There is also a salad bar as well as samosas which is rare for a buffet. Naan is ordered separately but at 1.99 it's really no biggie. I crave this place and a daily basis and having it so close to u of w is a major hazard for me as I go there once a week. If you want Indian food at a good price (10.99 dinner) run don't walk to India palace.
Tony Brown
Unexpected lack of sauce. The meal was OK. But this review is a warning to any Brits who order Chicken Tikka Masala. If you are from the UK you will expect pieces of Chikken Tikka in a sumptuous creamy sauce ready to be soaked up with Nan or rice.

You will not get that here. You get a sizzling skillet of chicken tikka, bell pepper and onions with NO sauce at all. A very dry affair.

As for the restaurant generally - it has a sad 70's feel. 70's decor with tired lighting and brown walls, not to mention the brown naugahide table cloths. Having said that, the staff were pleasant, plenty of people in enjoying themselves and the all you can eat buffet seemed popular. But like the insides, the outside looks like the bad end of the 70's just passed by so you need a strong will just to walk in.

Extremely Disappointing. I fell in love with the fine food of the Aryaas restaurants of India and was looking forward to finding a good Indian restaurant here in Winnipeg. Unfortunately this is not it. I tried the lunch buffet and it was far too mild and everything tasted the same. I ordered a chapati and it was very greasy. I may try ordering off the menu before I write this place off entirely. The best thing about the experience was the hostess/waitress who was very understanding. I regret my experience here.

Great curries. This place is my favourite Indian restaurant in the city. I've found within the past year most places seem to be watering down their curries. India palace always has the rich flavour that curries should have.
L-Mc Wpg
Among the best Indian food in the city. Stay away from the buffet (and boring butter chicken and chick peas) and you will be happy with you meal! If you like spice, be sure to let them know and you will get some heat.
Melanie
Outstanding - best Indian food in the city. I love India Palace and specifically recommend the buffet as the best option.

The samosas are to die for - the perfect balance of crispy fried outer shell and tender spicy filling.

Both the Butter Chicken and Tandoori chicken are so flavourful and tender that this must be where good chickens go when they die.

Also a favorite of mine is the Vegetable Korma, which is rich, homey and filling.

As for the person who previously posted that their take-out wasn't spicy, I'm wondering if he or she noticed the take-out menu indicates you should let them know if you want your food mild, a touch spicy or spicy? You controle the heat!

Curry at the Fringe Festival. Now I am wondering how it is that I sampled better food at their food tent at the Fringe Festival than what they delivered to my home a few months ago....?
For $6 I had a small bowl of half Chana Masala and half Vegetable Curry served over some basmati rice. There were actual flavours to the curry and just enough spice to make it a tasty dish. A lot of people were getting the Butter Chicken which they said was good but I didn't try it myself.

-----31 Dec, 2009-----

Where's the spice ?. I ordered from India Palace last night as another place I usually get delivery from was unable to deliver (welcome to Winnipeg). I ordered my usual channa masala, aloo gobi and mutter paneer but was sadly disappointed. It was hard to tell the difference between one dish from the other as they all were simply bland. As I was never asked how I would prefer the dishes...mild, med or hot I just assumed there would be some flavour there. Other than the different ingredients in each dish there was no way to tell them apart. The rice the dishes came with was not even Basmati, it was short grained white rice with a yellow color and oily. Only the naan was semi passable as Indian food. If you don't enjoy flavourful aromatic food then this is definitely your place to get Indian, otherwise save your money and order elsewhere.

One of the longest tenured Indian restaurants in Winnipeg, India Palace offers all the regular selections that you want out of their buffet.
