Review Jolly Mug Restaurant - Winnipeg

Scott Hewitt
Used to go to the original Jolly Mug on Fermor when I was a kid. Finally got around to visiting this location. Very busy today. We both ordered breakfasts. We were advised that the food might take a while because of how busy they were which was nice to know. Our coffee was kept full and hot while we waited. Real potatoes cooked on the flat top was nice to see, and the portions are great. I ordered poached medium and they were cooked perfect. Poached egg purists should be aware that the eggs are steamed in a cup. Not a problem for me, the result is close enough to poached. Everything was hot and tasted great. The service was very friendly and prompt. I will be back. Won’t wait 37 years this time.

A quaint restaurant that serves a variety of breakfast and standard meal options. There was a wait for the food but in fairness every table was occupied. The waitress was attentive without being intrusive. The Mexican omelette was a bit of a let down. The meat was a cut up burger patty without any additional seasoning.

Excellent breakfast food, good price. You get a lot of food. Atmosphere is cozy but clean. Staff are very friendly. It has an old time feeling. 100% recommended.

This place is so cute and yummy! The breakfasts cannot be beat. The servers are so friendly, the kitchen staff look like dope people. Also very clean.

Nice little stop for breakfast in St. Vital. Food is fresh, hot and delicious and the coffee flows ample. They have burgers and dinner offerings too but I couldn't resist the call of pancakes and back bacon.

We ordered the soup, some sandwiches and the Hungry Man breakfast. Everything was absolutely delicious and the server was lovely. Would highly recommend!

UPDATE: It got better, thank you! Love going back every time. Food quality has gone done since the pandemic. I really enjoyed coming here before, but something has changed. I’ve tried ordering food online through Skip twice and dinned in but every time there was something wrong with the orders. Either missing whole items, food not being cooked properly or just incorrect orders. Maybe the cook doesn’t care? I don’t know. I just hope things improve because I do enjoy this place. I would love to change this to 5 stars, but I will wait until things improve.

Stopped by for lunch as a total fluke because we were shopping in the strip mall. Having never been inside, I had assumed this spot was a hole-in-the-wall based just on its sign. I was surprised by how large the restaurant is, how clean and well maintained it is and most of all impressed by the excellent, friendly service. Simple, straightforward diner food was done right. Considerate servers went above and beyond to make my 4.5 yr old (and myself!) feel welcome. I had a fresh, crisp salad, fries and egg salad sandwich, kiddo had a perfect grilled cheese. Nice that sandwich platters offer choice of two options: fries, potatoes, salad, soups, etc. and that sandwiches come with choice of white, brown or rye.

Really pleasant experience, and so nice to stumble on a well run family restaurant.

It's a diner so diner food. I find their food tasty and well prepared. One thing though, we had the cheeseburger and although it had great flavour and fresh toppings the burger patty was very thin and small. Would order burger again if I knew this was changed up. New decor. Cute place. Just put some burger on the bun.
Small diner, nothing fancy. The service is friendly, informative and makes you feel like you've been there 100x. The patio would be a cool place to enjoy a lunch, but it was filled with smokers who kept coming in and out to get coffee refills. So the second hand smoke was filling up the restaurant...gross
The restaurant diner needs improvements, a fresh coat of paint would brighten up the place in a big way. The bathroom needs a refresher too & it doesn't have a change table for babies.
However, if none of that bothers you too much (and it didn't me) then make sure to order the Rueben Sandwich & fries, delish!
We added on a Caesar salad (tasty but it had those imitation bacon bits on top, could have done without them) and the onion rings (good, but nothing mind blowing).
The bill was $22 before tip
Went with my guy and his two kids. We all enjoyed our meals. Great home style comfort food. We will all definitely go back and recommend to friends and family.

I'm never out this way but ended up there on the 22nd taking my dad for a haircut and then breakfast. I had a usual plate of eggs, sausage, toast and hash browns. I know an old-school breakfast. But they nailed it!! Fresh cut up potatoes lightly grilled up no frozen mceedeez here! Then the eggs asked for them over easy and again cooked right on. Coffee was ok and the service was superb. I'd eat a breakfast there again and maybe try a lunch too. The prices were decent too.

I have lived in or outside of Winnipeg a huge portion of my life and my husband and I decided to try out the Jolly Mug on a Sunday around 1:00 p.m. It was busy but we were able to find a table right away. Due to being so close to the counter, we were greeted right away and had our order taken in no time. We could see many people around us who were waiting for their food so I had an idea that we wouldn't be getting ours anytime soon, which I was okay with. As we waited, I noticed a woman come up to the counter and said her and her friend have been waiting for half an hour and no one has taken their order. The waitress said she would be with them shortly. It was obvious these women were there before us. We received our food which was presentable and the taste was pretty good but nothing great. The burgers were really messy and it seemed more landed on my plate than in my mouth. Our waitress was kind and attentive as best she could for a busy time. However, the ladies that were waiting to order their food came to the counter half an hour later and stated they had been waiting an hour in total with still no food. They walked out and I felt terrible for them! This NEVER should have happened. There wasn't even an apology. I felt bad for the cooks as the waitresses kept getting the order wrong or didn't write it properly so meals kept going back as well. The girl who was bussing the tables was wearing a very inappropriate T-shirt for the work place and couldn't even put a smile on her face. In fact it looked like she had no idea what she was doing and constantly had to be told what to do. The other waitress kept talking to herself as well which was awkward to witness. Wish I could have given this place a higher rating but don't think we will be going back just based on how other customers were treated and how the staff, minus our waitress, did not work well together.

The breakfast omelet and hash browns beat The Red Top's! The coffee is second to none. The service was great. We will definitely be back for breakfast at least!

The food here has always been "okay" to me.. nothing special, and nothing too bad. I decided that I'd take my parents here for a quick bite the other day and again their response to the food was "not good, not bad".

Unfortunately for us, we decided to sit closer to the kitchen which might have been our first mistake, but the kitchen staff was using language so vulgar and so loudly, that I was starting to get extremely uncomfortable, and I'm not exactly one that pays attention to or even notices most foul language, but what they were talking about was so bad it really couldn't be mentioned online... Not to mention I had my parents with me, and my mother in particular was looking rather upset by their conversation. To be honest, what they were talking about in the kitchen while preparing our food was disgusting, and it made me question a lot of things about how the food itself was being prepared and how the restaurant was run.

The waitress that was attending our table forgot my dad's order, which isn't a big deal in itself because I know the stress that a job like that can have, but we thought it was kind of funny considering we were the only table in the entire restaurant. Meanwhile, she sat down and gave herself dinner and I saw her snatching food to munch on from the prep-cook's counter which again made me feel uneasy about what would end up on my plate.

The food came to the table and was either ice cold or warm, never hot.

So for the mediocre service, the cold food, and the horrible statements shouted from the kitchen made me feel disgusted with the atmosphere and has made me say quite honestly "I will never go back", and you too should think twice about it.

Disappointed. This USED to be a great breakfast place, with friendly and fast service and reasonable prices.

Just went on Sunday, April 7 2013 and was wondering what happened.??!! Ordered 2 eggs, and sausages. It comes with hashbrowns and toast. The sausages where barely cooked. Couldn't eat them. My friend had the same breakfast and both cost $25.00?? !! WAY too expensive for a simple breakfast. Last time we go here. It used to be really good. Too bad.

When we go to Jolly Mug, we go for breakfast. The few times we've tried lunch or supper we were less than impressed, but we try to make it out once a month for their breakfast. Their special is normally a lot of food for a great price.

Breakfasts are a busy time, but you normally have to wait about five minutes for a seat if there's none open. Food comes out fast and is always hot.

Nothing jolly about the meal or service. Stale burger bun, over-cooked burger, cheap frozen fries that were undercooked and extremely slow expediting
