If you like real good fish & chips, this is the place plus the garlicky biscuit that comes with the soup is to die for! I almost wanna ask for the recipe as it’s a taste I won’t forget.
Outstanding Chicken Club with super-moist pulled chicken and refreshing cranberry mayo. Surprisingly family friendly. Would love to check out a band sometime.
We used to visit this restaurant often when it was Kelsey's but hadn't tried it since it was rebranded. However, we had a coupon, so, like any cost conscious Winnipegers, we had to see if it was still a decent place to eat (Kelsey's and Fionn MacCool's are both part of the same chain).
We went for lunch while out shopping on Saturday, and it wasn't busy at all. We were greeted and seated right away, and our server, Caitin, got our drinks quickly. I ordered the Butter Chicken, and my wife, who is vegetarian, ordered the Cauliflower Curry.
Our meals arrived at the table quickly, piping hot (cold restaurant food is a huge pet peeve). My butter chicken was very tasty - downright delish, as a matter of fact - but my wife was totally unimpressed with her curry. You know how some hot dishes are so over-spiced that you can't taste anything but the spice? That was my impression of her dish... and in addition, it had a nasty, bitter aftertaste. She wasn't happy, and was wishing she had opted for the veggie burger (the only other vegetarian item on the menu). I have to wonder if anyone in the kitchen has tasted the sauce...
The service was quick, and Caitlin was outgoing and friendly... Perhaps we'll try it again to see if they can do better with another dish. Myself, I'd like to try the fish and chips. I hear that it's pretty good...
We checked out this place last Friday night and we weren't disappointed. The place was starting to get busy and seated right away. They had a specials for a dollar off of Miller's Creek pint. I ordered for the hamburger and was really good. My friend ordered for the shepard's pie and said it was delicious. Fast friendly service. Our server Rose was very nice she took off a certain percentage from our bills when she missed the ceasar's salad as side for the shepard's pie. Overall, we enjoyed our visit here.
If you like fish and chips, this is the place for you! The best I've had so far! Cool atmosphere and service is pretty good..I have been there a couple times now and was not disappointed in the food, I have yet to see any live music however.
my wife and I have been to fionn maccool's a number of times. the food is always great, serving staff friendly, and beers huge and tasty. on the weekends they will often have live bands which just adds to there already cool atmosphere. I really can't say enough about the place. if you haven't already been definitely worth checking out.
My husband and I decided to try this place out for late lunch/early dinner. Arrived to an almost empty dining room. One table was occupied in the entire room by a couple with two VERY vocal young children. Instead of giving us a booth, they give us a table right next to the noisy children. Had to ask to be moved so we could hear each other.
After viewing the menu I had decided on the lamb shank. I was told they were out. Instead ordered the fettuccine alfredo with chicken and asparagus as I figured they would have to have that. My husband wanted to try the fish and chips.
Now this is where things start to improve. My husband and I were not feeling 100% that day because let's just say we had a REALLY good time at the Jet's game the night before. I thought my husband was going to fall over when he saw his plate land in front of him. He ordered two pieces of fish instead of one and the pieces were MASSIVE. Under normal conditions he would probably be able to tackle that, but after the night before, not so much. He had to take food home for probably the first time in our entire marriage. We both thought our meals tasted terrific.
So there were a couple hiccups at the start, but at the end of the day our meals were very good, the portions were very generous and the cost was very reasonable. May end up trying this place out again.
Has pretty good Irish pub food! I enjoy the mini shepherd's pie appetizer and fish and chips. The batter on the fish is very thick and crunchy. I like that it holds up, but you do have to eat it fast since the moisture from the fish will cause it to soften after a few minutes. One piece is about 7-8 inches long so for lunch one piece would be a good order.
Looks like a typical Irish bar with lots of gold ornate decorations. I've gone her twice for lunch and would assume it is pretty packed during games at night. Big bar would be good to come with a group
Ambience was very pub-like. I went here with my man and my friend to celebrate his birthday, we didn't announce it was his birthday just because... Anyways! Good food, was a little disappointed with my Maple Cider Salmon, was a little small in portion, and I was looking for something low carb at the time. Definitely not ordering that again at the price I paid for.
Their guiness poutine however was good! I think that was one that the three of us ended up splitting. I would come back here again to try the other stuff but I need to budget wisely and ask how big the portions are next time I order. Writing this review makes me wanna go back for another poutine! Perhaps I can re-evaluate my review or add onto this. Who knew guiness and poutine was a good mix.
Great service! Waitress was super sweet, love the atmosphere and amazing food! Very clean, nice music, just an overall enjoyable place! Reminded us just of the pubs we visited in Ireland
First time visit was a great experience and we will most definitely be returning. The staff are prompt and friendly without being annoying, the environment is aesthetically pleasing and the menu has a wide variety of dishes to choose from, including several vegetarian options (which was a pleasant surprise, considering that the establishment itself is an Irish pub).
Me and my mother came in for an early weekend lunch; she had the Guinness Burger with a side caesar and I had the Spiced Potato Samosas. Our food arrived hot and fresh, and presented nicely. The burger was hearty and flavourful without being greasy, and the caesar was lightly tossed with dressing (not coated like some places do) and with real bacon. The samosas were not what I had expected them to be but were delicious - lightly spiced and flakey dainties without a trace of grease; perfect fare for a lighter lunch on a busy day.
Only negative comment would be that the prices are slightly higher than what i've seen to be standard (burgers and curry bowls are $16.50 each).
I have eaten here twice now and both times the food was great. The first time I had the omelet and it was a ton of food. Everything was delicious. Second time I had the burger with added cheese and mushrooms. The burger was a little over cooked but overall it was tasty. I'll definitely be going back to try another dish, everything that comes out of the kitchen looks amazing.
I was there with my friend when Dust Rhinos played. I couldn't decide which whiskey drink to try since I like whiskey and the waitress was very helpful. haven't had the time to come try the food yet.
Went there for dinner with my family
Me and my uncle both got the corned beef with cabbage, my mom & grandma ordered the shepherds pie while my little brother ordered the steak & fries
Only complaints was that my mom & grandma thought the pies were more like soup than pies, while my only complaint was the uniform skirts for the female staff which I find unsuitable for work(why not pants?), other than that everyone enjoyed it & we plan on going back
Overall the time wait for everything was around 30-40 minutes & the waitress we has was very friendly and checked up on us often
I'm so glad that I decided to try MacCool's despite the lackluster reviews on this site. My husband, daughter and I went for dinner Sunday night and had absolutely no complaints. For whatever reason, the restaurant was not as busy as it might be at dinnertime (the weather? people out at the lake?) and we enjoyed fabulous service from our server. Great drink suggestions, and food came out quickly, perfectly plated and hot. My husband loved his fish n' chips, and he's not easy to please on that one. My daughter's Clubhouse sandwich got great reviews, and I loved the Tandoori chicken wrap with light and crispy sweet potato fries on the side. I can't imagine what went wrong for some of those other people to post such negative reviews. We will definitely be back.
Food was good. Service was good. Decor was really nice. All around pretty great evening. I am not sure what people are complaining about. Great place. Love their burgers
SwizzleStyx. Our little group had lunch here yesterday and it was great! Love the décor and the atmosphere. The service was excellent and the food was pretty good. I found the veggie burger to be a bit dry, but the sweet potato fries were outstanding. The portions were huge and everything else we tried was great. I would love to come back in the evening sometime to check out some music or karaoke and some more of the menu items. We'll be back!
Great atmosphere!. I loved my first visit to Fionn MacCool's!
A group of four, myself included, went around 8pm on Friday or Saturday night last month - tired and hungry and in need of a beer after a long day of renovations. As soon as we walked in, I was concerned we would be turned away as the place was quite full. The hostess let us know they had a live band that evening, which explains the turnout, but she was quick to find us a table.
Great drinks menu - so many options of beer to try out. All 4 of us ordered something we've never had before, which is always fun. Being that we were in an Irish Pub, we all went ahead and ordered the fish and chips - I LOVE that it comes in different portion sized along with options for sides. And gosh, their tartar sauce?! AH-MAZING.
Our server was a younger gentlemen and he was great with us! Always very prompt, and apologized when he took longer than necessary, and joked along with the rest of our table (what can we say, we like fun).
I will definitely be returning! I recently drove past with my boyfriend who said it looked interesting, so we'll definitely be stopping by!
Not Bad!. Came here on a Saturday night with my bf around 10pm. We were seated promptly and our server came by a couple minutes later to take our drink order. They have a decent selection of beer and I had the Somersby, which basically tastes like carbonated apple juice--refreshing. They have a few vegetarian appetizer selections and we started off with the "Latke Grilled Cheese" $10, which consisted of 2 pieces of layered hashbrown patties (aka "latkes") with mushrooms, cheese, and a tad of sour cream. It was served alongside ketchup that had been mixed with Frank's Red Hot sauce. Personally, I found it small, on the greasy side, and nothing special. It definitely did not taste as great as it sounded, but in terms of greasy, bad-for-you-food, was good. My bf and I next shared the Veggie Burger ($14). It was really nice of them that instead of bringing 1 plate with the burger cut in half, they actually served us separate plates, each with half the burger and our portion of fries. The patty seemed homemade and was honestly about an inch thick. The sautéed mushrooms and crispy onions on top were tasty. Service was good the entire evening, and 2 big beers and our food came to $45 with tax. The live music that evening was rather loud and not my thing personally, but that wouldn't deter me from coming back in the future. For a chain restaurant, my experience overall was rather positive.
Pleasantly surprised. We went for lunch on a Sunday .I would like to know the waitresses name as she was outstanding. There were 4 of us, my sister , her husband my father and I. The waitress was blond lots of tattoos , the reason I am sharing this info is that I see the manager actually checks urban spoon out and responds , so if he sees it I would like him to know she was very good. The meals were excellent, chicken pie among the best ever, everyone enjoyed their meals. We will be back for sure. Teeny tiny thing but I love a good caesar and yours was very good...but would rather have celery than a bean.
The reviews on here must be old.. I went for the first time today and had great food, service and beer.
Our waitress was attentive good looking and made great conversation.
I had the avocado and bacon burger with fries and guiness gravy. It was all delicious and I will be definitely coming back. 5 *'s
The Hangry Accountant
+3.5
Returned here for dinner because my boyfriend had a gift card. The food was excellent. We shared the spinach and artichoke dip which was creamy and cheesy and delicious. I had the fish and chips. The fish was perfect but the fries were a little bland. Our server seemed distracted and wasn't very attentive but overall. It was a good meal.
Went for supper Thursday Jan. 22,2015. Good service, excellent food, large beer selection. Definitely going to come back to try more menu items and re-experience the cool atmosphere.
Irish Pub. Great atmosphere. ..it definitely brought out the Irish in us .
Good, much better than the Kelsey's that used to be here. Went here for lunch for the first time the other day. The service was great and the food was very good. I was there with three other people and we all enjoyed our food. I ordered the steak and mushroom boxty. It's described as a stewed beef and mushroom mixture in a potato pancake. I thought a fried potato pancake, but it's more like a pita or flat bread. It was very tasty. It came with a side salad. I thought it came with fries but the salad was good. Just spring mix with some seeds or something on it, but good. My dad had fish n chips which looked delicious. He is a big guy and ordered the two piece and couldn't finish it the portion was so big. His wife ordered French onion soup and calamari which she enjoyed and my husband had lamb pie which was a bit petite for a guy like him, but he liked it. Prices seem pretty reasonable/on par with other similar places. The wait staff appeared to be all female, all the ones I saw anyway, and they wear black tshirts and short plaid skirts and knee socks. They look adorable but the taller girls skirts are on the risky side of short and I hope they are allowed to wear tights if they want...especially in the winter.
Tried it out and really liked it. Food really good we had the lamb shank, steak boxtie and a burger. Food took some time to come but very tasty . We'll be back!
My husband and I decided to try this place out for his birthday since it just opened. We were so impressed!! We shared the mini Yorkshire Shepard pies to start and they were amazing!! My husband then got the Shepard pie meal and I got the tandoori chicken wrap on naan bread, both also really really good!! The only negative thing I'd say was the Caesars we got. We're both huge caesar lovers, and we always get them made spicy. These ones came and there was absolutely no flavour, tasted like water. But the food definitely made up for it. I've recommended it to tons of people and will definitely go back!!
Exceptional Food, Drinks, Service and Atmosphere. I arrived Thursday at about 6:30pm. I was greeted and seated instantly. Our drink orders were taken right away. My group didn't want to order food right away, but our server made sure that throughout the night we had drinks. When we did order food it arrived in a very reasonable time. The food was INCREDIBLE especially for under $20.00! Since there was a Jets game on the place was busy, but looking around I could tell that people were not looking around for their server.
I will be going back the next chance I get.
Pleasantly Surprised. After reading all the reviews on here I had no intentions of checking this place out any time soon. But my boyfriend wanted to and we went last night. Our server was great and prompt. We didn't have to wait long for our drinks or food. I like the rover bites or.. I think that's what they're called. I love mashed potato in general. So these were interesting. The chowder I had was really, really, thick for me. My boyfriend liked it though. He had a tandoori sandwich... I would've liked it more seasoned. I really liked the little cheese biscuit that came with my chowder. My beer was good. They have a good selection for drinks. I'll probably go back when in the area to try some other dishes. :3
I'm writing this review to say, the food is really good. The service is great too. I think all the negative reviews are just the growing pains of just opening. My visit came with it's own hiccups. Some stuff wasn't available on the menu. Then what I ordered wasn't either.... Big deal, order something else. I was apprehensive about coming in when I read the reviews, and honestly I wasn't going to come in. I'm glad I did and will be coming back forsure.
Are you in need of a casual date night? How about an after work drink in a great atmosphere?
