Review Pad Thai Restaurant - Winnipeg

Ricki Holland
I've been in Winnipeg for a year and this is my favorite restaurant!! I ordered food from here every week and I literally almost tried all combinations. I am a huge fan of Thai food and I gotta say they have very authentic Thai food!! The service is also very very nice, making me enjoy their food much more! I followed their Ins account and I found that they helped local hospitals and police stations a lot during Covid, such a warm restaurant. Please try their food and service you won't be disappointed!!

Was excited to try a place closer to home as my wife and I usually buy our Thai takeout elsewhere. We both ordered the pad Thai and got rice rolls to share. Both of which were recommended as favourites on the companies website. We were very disappointed when we opened our pad Thai to find a clump of rice noodles, that lacked both flavour and spice, as we’re used to with our normal Thai food. It was, sadly almost inedible. The rice rolls were no better. They were completely busted open upon opening the container (see picture) and the texture and seasoning of the pork it contained was similar to that of scrambled eggs. We will not be returning.

This is my favorite Thai restaurant in the city. Even though I’m not close, I’ll still go here over any others Thai restaurant. Excellent food and wonderful owners! Their green and red curry soups are probably my favorite.

We had a crunchy noodle dish and a curry dish. Both were excellent! Staff was very helpful suggesting what we would like and they were right! The price I thought was very good for the quantity and quality of the food. Restaurant also has super cute decor, although I think they are closed now temporarily for in person dining. We will definitely try their take out soon.

Pad Thai is my favourite Thai food restaurant in town! The service is always excellent and food super tasty. Their signature Pad Thai is amazing, it’s even better with sriracha sauce. Pad Seuw is another dish that I really like, it’s flavourful and filling. My grandpa is a peanut lover, so his favourite dish is the “Peanut Lover”. There are so many different foods that you can choose from, there’s something here for everyone :).

The food has me stuck in the bathroom for nearly five hours once I got home, bad enough to where I almost called an ambulance. I will never be returning, this place should be shut down To reply to your reply - I didn’t order anything spicy, despite how much I love spicy food

The decor of this place is neat and unexpected, the individuality partitioned booths are a stellar notion. The central water fountain adds a mellow vibe to the place. The menu offers a wide variety of options. Wait staff was friendly. The food was good enough for me to be willing to return and try more items from their menu.

Absolutely delicious Thai food! Some of the best curry I've had in the city! Large portions too. Highly recommend the deep fried spring rolls, pad Thai, and panang.

Don't eat here for lunch unless you have 2 hours. There was only one server and she was frazzled. It's like lunchtime rush was a surprise for them. It took 57 minutes to get our food!!!!The "lunch Soup" was plain water with a couple of small veggies in it... boring and tasteless. The main dish is the only reason I didn't leave a zero rating. It was tasty and authentic. The portion was a little small but that's alright for lunch. If this was a supper entrée it would've been unacceptable. This restaurant needs more staff for the lunchtime rush. When customers have to leave unfed it's a FAIL!

Good little St. James Thai place. Service is quick and food is always hot. Anything with the sweet creamy peanut sauce is amazing as are the curry dishes, especially the Matsoman (29a) which has cashews, pineapple and potato. There is a salmon red curry dish (17b) which is a sweet n sour flavour sensation. The signature pad Thai is delicious, our favourite is with the vermicelli instead of egg noodles. There are also a lot of vegetarian options and if you don't mind fish in the sauce, most items can be substituted with tofu, which is fried nice and crispy. The ambiance is quaint with authentic decorations and to top it off, the sounds of martial arts classes going on upstairs. Some may think it's loud, we think it adds the the charm of the whole experience.

We came here as a shot in the dark, we need to choose a place quick sort of decision and boy were we surprised.

The first look at the menu had us all excited as there were numerous items that sounded amazing. We ended up getting an order of Yor Tod, Yor Khao as well as Som Tam Thai for appetizers and they were delicious. When it came time for the main course I chose the Shrimp Matsaman and I could not have been happier. The dish was amazing on top of the delicious coconut rice. My only dissapointment is that it was so good that everyone at the table had to have their own taste and there was even less for me to enjoy.

The atmosphere was nice. Decorations were what you expect walking into a place like that and everyone there seemed to be having a good time.

The service was amazing. Our waitress was extremely friendly and very helpful with the menu and with giving recommendations on the individual dishes. Another overlooked fact was that the food delivery was smooth and fast.

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience here and will definitely be going back again.

One of my favourite Thai places. SO GOOD. The staff are super friendly as well. Great atmosphere. Worth the trip from the East to the West End!

Recommend!

I cannot rave enough about this restaurant. The quality of food is always amazing, fresh picked and served that day. I love the feel of the restaurant and the owners are very polite and welcoming. I have my favourites and then try a new dish every time we go, and trust me we live on the other end of the city, yet venture to this little gem in the wall!
I have had some dishes that have not been to my liking but I have leant that doesn't make a restaurant bad, dishes have different flavours for different people. It is important for a restaurant to offer these choices to please everyone, it's just learning what your favourites are!

I wanted to love this place so much since it's so close to where I live but I just couldn't. We ordered Pad Thai, Panang curry and another dish that I forgot its name. While everything was served quickly, the food was still warm, they totally lacked of flavor. There was also an overuse of peanut butter sauce in every dish, which made me regret coming to the restaurant hoping to have a somewhat authentic Thai dinner.

We dined here for dinner on Saturday night. We were in St. James so we thought we would give it a try. We've eaten at many different Thai places over tha last many years and some have been awesome and some not so good. Unfortunately for us, Pad Thai Restaurant did not leave us wanting more. We found our soup to be very bland - totally lacking any exciting flavour. Our Pad Thai - while presented very nice - was just okay. We also ordered a panang curry, and while it was our favourite dish of the three, it also was sub-par to other thai restaurants in the city. We were surprised how busy the restaurant was considering the lack of flavour we were hoping for. I also noticed the odd vegetables that were in the different dishes - they just didn't work for us. We won't be dining here again. We thought we'd try someplace different, but were sadly disappointed. We found this place to be comparable in price to most other restaurants, but our taste buds were seriously let down :-(

Yum!. I like Thai more than most other cuisines, so I can only say that I like this place and would go back any time. The food has always been tasty. Better food than at a burger place, for sure.

Oh Man.... I may not be a Thai Food Conoseur... But I really like this place. People keep making comments about the small amounts of meat of the lack of sauces or flavour. But in my opinion, the chef here is not only talented in traditional Thai dishes but also in ensuring the dish is as healthy as can be. Too much sauce and too much meat leaves you feeling ichy and heavy afterward. I recently moved and I had been getting a lot of meals 'to-go' because making food wasn't an option. This is the one place I ate from that I can truly say left me feeling energized after my meal as opposed to bloated and sick. The staff is exceedingly friendly, the decor and music are ridiculously pleasant, the wait has never been long, and the portions are just fine. I love this place.

Side note: you have NOT LIVED until you have the Tomyum Soup from this place.... I got mine on the milder side so you can really taste all the undertones... Its is such a delectable dish. Supremely delightful. I tried to place and order just now for pick up even though I was just there yesterday, and I'm very sad to see they are closed today. I will definitly be there tomorrow for a large Tomyum soup to keep in my fridge for whenever I get a craving... Which is gonna be A LOT.... LOVE IT.

I must say I'm so disappointed as the family run business is lovely, the pad phet is my fav dibs and it was below standard here. I've had the mee krob several times and it is delish! But red curry must be made to perfection and for the price so unfortunately it was not

I ordered take out and wasn't too impressed with their pad Thai which was surprising. The rice paper rolls were good, wasn't a lot of chicken (barely any) they definitely made up for it with the Kaeng Khlaw Warn. It was amazing but extremely spicy! I enjoy spicy food and I found it a quite powerful! They definitely need a warn-ing for that dish!!

Good Experience!!. Last time we were here was the summer of 2007.......7 years ago.

Have been overseas to Bangkok on vacation a few times in that span, and thought a return trip to this local restaurant was long overdue to remind of us that vibe.

Started off with an Appetizer. #7) Som Tam Thai.

Our Main's were:
#19) Shrimp Kai Pad Med Manuang Himapham
#29a) Beef Matsaman
#30a) Chicken Pad Thai Wun Sen

All excellent choices, and very well prepared.

The restaurant is clean, the food is good, and the service is prompt and friendly.

We're definitely coming back. Now, all they need is to bring in some Leo beer!

Support your local establishments.

YUMMY!!. Passed this place a hundred times and now wish I had gone in sooner. Had dinner for two special. I was crazy about the soup and the curry. I personally wasn't keen on the pad thai noodles but my husband really liked them. Calamari was perfectly done and beautifully tender. Staff was friendly and for such a busy night our food came pretty quickly. Will be back. I'm still full and already daydreaming of that delicious hot and sour red curry and coconut soup..........mmmmmmmm so good!!

If you like this restaurant, you need to get out of st. James and try some other Thai places.
Quit eating Thai because of this restaurant. Thankfully was introduced to some better places that reminded me how amazing the cuisine can be.

Delicious. A regular favorite. A family owned business that is proud to serve the food they do, and so they should. They never bite off more than they can chew, or take on more business than they can handle so the product always stays high quality. I'm a little disappointed that they feel the need to dump so much toxic MSG into their food. Its so delicious and doesn't require this horrible chemical to make it taste good. Unfortunately they are making it harder to get no MSG by pre making some of their food with it. That's too bad because aside from this fact, it is one of my favorite restaurants in Winnipeg. Wish they would deliver. Would highly recommend but ask for no MSG.

Love this place!. The food is always so tasty! And very authentic and cozy interior. Just not too happy that they have been tinkering with their recipes to accommodate gluten free in more top sellers. It has changed the flavours and now some of my faves can't be ordered MSG free either. I've been coming here a long time and will continue to do so. Staff is very friendly.

My Lunch Go to spot. I go here very often at lunch because I work close by. I figure for an entire meal that I can hardly finish and it being real food and under $15 I'm happy. The staff are so nice and friendly, a real family style restaurant. I highly recommend this place.

Beautifully kind staff and talented chef. This food always seems to be great. Never a disappointing choice to come here. Would even take my grandmother!

We went there for my birthday in July and had a great meal. The food was great and the decor spectacular. The waitress showed me an origami flower which I didn't know how to fold. I took it home and figured it out.

Dissapointed. I had the Pad Thai here and it was rather under seasoned. There was no real defining taste in their pad thai sauce. There was also an over whelming amount of bean sprouts on the plate, more so than noodles. Yes, pad thai is supposed to have a fair amount of bean sprouts, but not as much as I had. Of all the places in the city, this was the place that I had expected to get an authentic plate of pad thai, but they did not deliver.

I also had the calamari, and it was alright. not overdone, not rubbery at all, and it came with a decent peanut sauce.

Expensive and Mediocre. Very small portions. Ordered a soup that didn't arrive until we had finished our meal. The soup was terrible anyways and we didn't eat it. Noticed several other full bowls of soup left on the tables while paying our bill.

Winnipeg has many good Thai restaurants (Bouns, Vientiene, Sukho Thai) and this isn't one of them.

RICE WRAPS. This is my favourite place to take my girlfriend. The owners are such hard workers and he a fantastic menu. I've been here so many times and never left unhappy. Fabulous place.
Brenda Lee Yandeau
Very good food but the portions are very small for the price. Will not go back unless im not very hungry.

Absolutely Delicious. I ordered cold rolls, shrimp pad thai and panang chicken curry with rice and a lychee juice to drink. Others have said the portions were small, and im not going to say they are large but they are about perfect for what we *should* be eating for a meal, not our american-size portions that are rubbing off on our country. Im a big guy and i would have been happy with the cold rolls and one entree dish. (I just had to try them both!) The curry was the best I've had and the pad thai was pretty good too. Service was meh but the guy seemed new, and the food came out very fast, although I came in after their lunch rush. I would highly reccomend this place. Too bad im just passing through town, or I'd be back!

Excellent quality. But like another reviewer said, the quantity was a bit lacking...

will go back again for sure, though!

I chose to stop here on a whim as I was not familiar with this restaurant and was in the mood for thai food. I ordered the Thai Green Curry with Beef and my guest ordered a standard Pad Thai. I was very impressed with Thai Green Curry which is my favorite dish. The Pad Thai was not stellar but was very good. I enjoyed the ambience of the restaurant and was quite comfortabel. The pricing was excellent for the food and I will certainly be going back to try more of their dishes.

One of my Fav's. I love this place. The quantity is small but food is very tasty. I love the Panang Curry and Pad Thai noodles.

The quality is there but not so much the quantity. We've been here a few times since there's not many ethnic restaurants in St James. The food is always good but we've noticed the downsizing of some dishes over the years. The pad thai used to fill the large plate and now they give you a soup bowl amount in the middle of the plate. The same goes for the curries in the lilttle bowl. It's much cheaper to go to walmart, buy a can of Aroy-D green curry, and add your own meat. Although i have to say the two things worth the price are the Pad Hoo (stir fried crab) curry and Choochee Plar (crunchy fish).

Green curry. I've been to this place many times since it opened. I usually get the same 4 dishes and I think the food and staff are great. Reviews that say otherwise and suggest it isn't worth the trip and say its located outside the city are misleading.

Gem! Can't believe we didn't go sooner. We live in St James and I can't believe we've been driving across town for Thai when this place was so close by. Had the Pad Thai and panang curry along with a couple of appetizers. We tried the shrimp spring rolls and the veggie rice paper rolls. Must say everything was amazing. Best panang we've ever had. The Pad Thai is somewhat different from what I was expecting. Not the usual flavour. My husband loved it but I don't know if I would try it again. The service was awesome and the prices were pretty reasonable. No more driving across town for Thai! We will be back :)

Great lunch specials and other menu items. I found this place while looking for somewhere to eat at lunch. The first time I ordered the lunch special of coconut rice with chicken. It was so tasty that I decided to go back again for some more of the same but ordered another lunch special. Also excellent. Fresh and crunchy veggies with chicken served over rice. The third time I ordered from the menu. Veggies and chicken over broad rice noodles. There was so much food that I took half of it home. I ordered the spring rolls once but didn't care for them. Ordered calamari twice and it was excellent. The servings of everythng were quite generous. I'll be going through the menu (50 items) in the next few months!
Eating In St. James
Pretty Good. We live in the neighborhood and this is place is in our rotation of Friday night takeout places. I have eaten inside a few times as well. The food is not the best Thai I've had, but not bad at all. The peanut sauce is awesome. Just to clarify, as another reviewer said this restuarant is outside the city, it isn't - it's on Portage just west of Moray.
Foodluver
Hits some notes. Decent Thai cuisine, but we have often been or ordered dishes that were not given the care they deserved. Greasy, soggy spring rolls and some questionably flat curries coaxed us to look elsewhere. Satisfactory for quick takeout on a Friday.

Red Curry = amazing!!. Great food at a great price! We love Thai food and this place is one of the best we've been to.

Best Thai in the city, hands down.. If you're going out for any asian food whatsoever, I completely recommend Pad Thai. Their food isn't greasy or gross, like most other food places that offer asian food, but they do have awesome curries. If you go, make sure to try the Pad Thai (obviously), and the rice rolls with veggies and pork. If you're in the mood for a fruity drink, make sure to get the Lycee, it's delecious! This is definitely one of my family's favourite restaurants!
Proko
The food is fresh and the dishes are true to traditional Thai cooking. Arguably the best Thai curries in the city.
Lennox
Did not enjoy.. The food taste old.. the vegetables and noodles must be prepared ahead of time because nothing is fresh.. The wait takes forever!! WE GO TO RESTAURANTS FOR A REASON... ITS BECAUSE WE WANT OUR FOOD.. NOT TO WAIT AN hour for our food.. gez.. location is far outside of the city.. not worth the drive in my opinion. Stopped by this restaurant during the summer while buying ice cream. Slow service.. and waitress is rude. THUMBS DOWN.

Soft Shelled Crab. My wife & I regularily go to the Pad Thai on Portage. We usually sample different menu items at every visit, but always have the Soft-Shelled Crab in yellow curry sauce.

Overall Pad Thai was excellent. I cannot state enough how important it is to use authentic ingredients and cooking styles and Pad Thai does it in spades! For anyone in the St. James region it is an automatic recommendation for good Thai cuisine. I daresay it might rank highly as one of the best Thai restaurants in all of Winnipeg.
