Stopped at Bernstein’s Deli for lunch with a coworker and they delivered. As in... great food and exactly what I hoped for and expected. Having been to some of the top deli’s in Manhattan and not having a serious pastrami in a long time, I was long overdue. The pastrami was delicious andantes shaved so fine it was just falling apart, while the seeded mustard and whole grain bread were “mighty fine”!! Based on what I have seen on their menu, I will be back and likely for latke’s at breakfast. Couldn’t resist picking up some of their homemade garlic pita chips on the way out. Fast service and good prices. Gotta check these guys out...
The food is delicious and definitely has that homemade-comfort food feel. There are not many tables, so make sure you are there early during rush eating times!
You know when you are in grade 7, and all the kids call you Fatty Fatty Fat Fat, and you act like you don’t care, but you do care, and you tell your friends that you have a girlfriend, but they know your lying, and also they aren’t your friends anyway?
We’ve all been there.
But also, remember in grade 7, when every once in a while someone would be nice to you, because of pity, but it didn’t even matter because it was still nice to have someone be nice, and that makes you feel warm inside?
Bernstein’s gives me that same feeling.
The chopped liver is super awesome. I make sandwiches with the chopped liver and with bread at work, at lunchtime. Everyone is jealous of me because of my lunch at work, and that makes me feel good because nobody is every usually jealous of me at work, or at home.
We have been wanting to try Bernstein's for some time and finally ventured across the city one Saturday afternoon. Tried the matzo ball soup (half order gets 1 ball, full order gets 2 and is a very large portion). Not bad even though it is only broth, chicken and carrots in the soup. I enjoyed the potato latkes with sour cream and my guest savoured every bite of his house-made, warm corned beef on hand cut rye bread. Only complaint is the staff. It was not busy on this visit yet took more than 10 minutes to get a bowl of soup. Then the young staff sat around at one of the empty tables and proceeded to engage in a discussion about meat slaughtering, blood letting, kosher practices and why one should be a vegetarian. Not exactly appropriate nor appetizing in the presence of customers.
First time at Bernstein's even though a live 2 minutes away. Will be going back more often though. The deli it self has a lot of great options. Went to try their burger for Le Burger Week and it was very good. The chicken was cooked perfect and the slaw and pickles balanced out the breading spices.
I love the breakfast food at Bernstein's. But mostly I love the pancakes. They used to have banana pancakes that were heavenly, now it's carrot cake w/ walnuts and cream cheese. Amazing. The french toast is really good too. If you don't want breakfast, try a hot sandwich like the deluxe reuben or corned beef. I have never had bad service, but I usually try to come before it gets really busy (like around 11am).
Great omelettes, hashbrowns, and homemade jam with consistently the worst service. Very nice being able to have a place to park which seems to be hard to come by in Winnipeg. Will continue going back for excellent breakfast.
My favourite authentic Jewish Deli in Winnipeg. If you're lucky enough to get a seat try the latke stacker. Has always been a local favourite of mine, but in the last few years they have expanded to feature a new menu with some very unique takes on some old world Jewish food.

Very good thick sliced hot corned beef sandwich. There are 3 different sizes, I ordered the "full" and it was filling enough. Order it with the Dijon mustard.
Always great.. I have had lunch at Bernstein's numerous times and have always been very pleased. The food is great, service is outstanding and your wallet won't feel threatened. Will be returning soon.

Interesting place. Hidden away in a suburban strip mall is this classic deli experience. We had lunch consisting of Fatoush salad, Falafel pita and the classic Reuben sandwich. Homemade Falafel were excellent but the rest of the pita was not up to the competition such as best pizza donair, shawarma time or sultans shawarma. A solid effort. The Reuben was good, good size and made with care the proportions of ingredients were done right and served hot. Not quite Ira's Deli level of the Reuben sandwich but very,very close. If I was from this neighborhood it would not be worth the effort to travel downtown for that extra bit of taste.
The Fattoush salad was interesting and unlike any other salad of this type I have ever encountered. I am not saying it was wrong and it also was certainly made with and presented with care but I will not order that selection again. The salad came in a bowl with no salad in it just tomato, cucumber and green pepper and an enormous amount of deep fried pita chips which is unlike any other salad of this type I have ever had. It was also swimming in what was supposed to be hummus.

Buttermilk Pancakes. The best ever
First time, was very tasty.. Always seeking out new places to dine and figured we would give this place a chance. A bit surprised to find that its actually part of a small market store. This actually made it seem like an old "neighbourhood" style cafe and I actually ended up buying some nice rye bread. Our meals were very good, and the service matched. I had not had a rueben sandwich quite like this one, the meat cut nice and thick. My dining partner had the Bison Rueban, a rather unique concoction which she really enjoyed. Prices are reasonable, food is great and we could tell there were alot of regulars attending by the way the staff interacted. Give it a try next time you're looking for something a littel bit different.

Great Deli!. I go to Bernstein's Deli about twice a month and it is always great! The soup, sandwiches and breakfast are all excellent. Make sure you grab a soup to take home with you... Matzah ball!
Delicious!. Came here yesterday for lunch with a Groupon Coupon. I ordered a Reuben Sandwich and Coleslaw, and my dining companion ordered Pastrami on Challah bread and onion rings. The Reuben sandwich was perfect. A good amount of corned beef, not too much, not too little. I ordered it with plain yellow mustard (instead of the hot mustard) and it was perfect. The coleslaw is how I like it with an oil/vinegar/sugar dressing. My boyfriend enjoyed his sandwich too. The onion rings were really good. This is a good place to come, and if I wasn't craving the Reuben so badly, I would have definitely tried something else. The service was good, and the young girl refilling my water was very attentive! We will definitely be back soon!

Bottom line: Unattentive service won't stop me from heading back to try more greasy breakfast items or attempt one of the great looking sandwiches that strolled by.
Chicken and waffles (actually blueberry pancakes), was a fantastic combination. The chicken was in very simple, somewhat dry, finger format, but the dish was very satisfying. The latke stackers didn't do it for me.. However, I did enjoy the corned beef on its own. Tasty, albeit pricey, pierogies were good but nothing I would write home about.
Service was slow to bring or refill beverages and one server in particular had the 'I don't want to be here and you are inconveniencing me' vibe, however the other staff were quite pleasant.
New hot corned beef sandwich is unbelievable. Top notch that's just as good as what you find in NYC.
Good ol' deli. I have been going to Bernsteins whenever I am in Winnipeg for many years. They have great classics, and recently, some tasty new additions.
Some suggestions:
Breakfast: try the challah french toast, or if you have time for a food coma, the latke stacker will not disappoint
Lunch: grilled chicken caesar sandwich or the cabbage borscht if you're thinking soup. The Reuben burger is also fantastic.
Store: get the garlic pita chips and chopped liver on your way out, then check the store hours so you know it won't be closed when you eat it all in about 15 minutes.

Winnipeg's Best Deli. I've been going here for years. Always enjoy the food. Great deli sandwiches, soups, and love the breakfast. Service can be a bit slow at times, but always worth the wait.
My only complaint about this place is that I don't have enough time to go here often enough. Don't tell my mother this, but Bernstein's deli has the best borscht I've ever had! The service was fast, the food was fresh and absolutely delicious. Everything is fairly priced, and worth every single penny. I'll definitely be back again, and again, and again!

This is the greatest deli!. I can't get enough of Bernstein's. I go there every time I'm in Winnipeg when they're open. It's better than most delis and a whole lot cheaper. The cabbage borscht is the best. Last visit I had two bowls. I always ask the owner for the recipe and she says she'll only give it to whomever buys her deli. I've also had the latkes and pastrami which are very good. Friends of mine speak well of the perogies. The deli is connected to a butcher shop so they can offer a larger selection than a regular restaurant. I only wish I still lived close enough to Bernstein's to take frozen foods back with me.
Decent food.. The floor was littered with trash and most of the tables were dirty - typical Winnipeg diner, in other words. The décor is out of date and the area is shared with a deli, which doesn’t bother me, I’m just sayin’ don’t expect much in the way of ambiance here. I had the chopped liver sandwich made with thick slabs of rye bread, and the cabbage borsht. Both were very good, especially the cabbage borsht which had a ‘mom is here and everything’s okay’ undertone. My husband had the smoked beef sandwich which was also made with the thick slices of fresh rye bread, which he enjoyed, but it was a little skimpy on the meat, and his fries weren’t great. On the way out I bought a jar of full sour pickles and a loaf of rye bread, and all in all, my belly was happy.
Great breakfasts.. My husband and I have been going to Bernstein's for breakfast for years. Liz is a treasure (server); Marla (owner) is always a pleasure to deal with; the chef prepares the BEST SCRAMBLED EGGS IN THE WORLD!!!!! It's not a trendy place - but who wants trendy when you can get top quality food, a server with a great sense of humour, a down-to-earth owner who cares about her customers and staff at Bernstein's? And, like I said, the best scrambled eggs NOT just in Winnipeg but in the WHOLE wide world!! What a great place to get the weekend off to a good start!
Decent Place. Nothing too special, no frills, just decent sandwiches and soups. Can't go wrong. If you want a small diner type place that serves good sandwiches and soups, stop by here for a quick bite.
Good Food. Wonderful take out! My husband and I buy their take out food all the time. Their chopped liver is wonderful and prices are reasonable compared to other deli-type stores in the area. Would recommend.
SOUP!. They have the most amazing soups! My three top favourites are,

Passable But Nothing Special. Overall, I liked this place, but I am in no rush to go back.
The decor is pretty basic, nothing wrong with that. When I first entered, the place was slightly more than half full, but all of the empty tables had dirty dishes on them. Within 10 minutes, this was corrected.
I sat there for some time before being waited on. The waitress I got was far from friendly or even businesslike. She asked me if I wanted a menu and seemed put out that she had to go back to the kitchen area to retrieve one for me. Shame on me for not knowing the menu before I went.
I ordered the Montreal Smoked beef. Curiously, this sandwich is usually served cold at this deli. A fair departure from what I am used to. I took them up on the offer to heat it up on the grill (as opposed to being steamed). This greatly improved the taste. I also ordered a side order of fries. They look home made and looked better than they tasted. They weren't particularly crispy (although they certainly looked the part) and I found them to be a bit mushy. The sandwich was $5. Adding the fries and a can of pop brought my bill to $10.78.
While the food was decent, I have a feeling I won't be back.
