Review Sherbrook Street Delicatessen - Winnipeg

Janice Overend
Just came in to grab a coffee to go, but the vibe and great staff convinced us to stay for brunch. Definitely glad we did! The smoked meat was perfection (with the best house made mustard). Latke and homemade bread. Their menu seems sandwich based, so if the small brunch menu is an indicator, this place would slay it.

Wonderful! I waited long time but my server's service was perfect! food is wonderful! one of my best place now.

This is my 2nd time here. Very nice but small deli. The meat sandwiches and potato chips are very good as well as Mish mash soup Imperial cookies are delish. Parking not great as on a pretty busy street. I like the area. Waitress very nice

I love this place. I brought my daughter here thinking that I would be the one most enjoying myself, knowing that the menu was geared toward adult fare. Not only did they accommodate my 6-year-old's requests but they were so kind and lovely about all of it. When they closed briefly this fall we were so sad to have to find a new lunch spot; I am thrilled they're back, and open to taking requests for Lox. Our favourites were the Salmon Lox bagel, the smoked meat sandwich, and the soups and soda flavours. I'm hoping that after their return they'll be here to stay. As a vegetarian, it's been lovely finding a place that I have a handful of items I can eat and enjoy(They now have a vegan sandwich) that both my daughter and I love, but that's so cozy and local. A go-to for anyone living-in or visiting Winnipeg.

Love this place. Been to Schwartz's in Montreal? Me too. The smoked meat in this place is better, I'm my opinion. Service can be a bit slow, hence the 4 stars, but food wise they're a 5. I recommend the hot mustard on the smoked meat, but the regular mustard won't ruin the sandwich, by any means. If they're busy, stay away from the sodas...They ARE delicious but they're all hand made, so you might end up waiting a while.

Loved the food. My taste buds had hard time keeping up with the different flavors it was getting. Had the pickled tongue with liver (the wienstien ) plus fried salami. Also the chips were very good and crispy, I think In house cut and cooked, our server was very friendly.

Who I assume was the owner or manager was super accommodating. My sister was looking for Vegan options and he made her a delicious sandwich off menu. And the corned beef sandwich was delicious. A little pricy for a deli, but for the service and quality I was more than pleased.

I went to the Sherbrook Street Delicatessen because of an article written in our local newspaper (Winnipeg Free Press). The writer had nothing but good things to say so I thought I should give it a shot. I had the Winnipeg smoked meat sandwich and it was incredible. The marble rye bread was fresh and the smoked meat was very juicy and tender. The hot mustard finished it off perfectly, I will be back for lunch again soon.

Waited to be seated and the staff just walked passed me without an acknowledgment (good day or I be with you in a moment) to serve other guests. Came back to counter to answer the phone (it even look like I got a snarl don't bug me look). <br/><br/>If I could give 0 stars, I would.<br/><br/>Would I go back? NOT for a long time. Hopefully, the person learns some manners or leaves.

Unfortunately for $36 I would expect a lot more. I got two small sandwiches which were ok but the bread was soggy. It’s not very much food for $11 for just the sandwich. Then for an extra $5 you get coleslaw which is again ok and some plain kettle chips. Pickle was the best part. For reference I can get two loaded burgers and fries and yam fries and dips for less money and a ton more food at nuburger etc. so why would I come back. I’m still searching for that great sandwich place.

What a wonderful little place for s Saturday breakfast nosh! We had the BBQ Beef Hash for our meal. Has a hint of sweetness from the sauce. Topped with two “””Poifect!””” Fried sunny side eggs just runny enough to soak into the beef. Nice thick slice of homemade toast on the side! Bottomless cups of organic dark roast coffee. <br/><br/>WE SHALL RETURN!

Food - I shared the Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich and the Corned Beef Sandwich. The Montreal Smoked Meat was incredible, on par with anything I've had in Montreal (maybe a close second to Schwartz's). The Corned Beef was a little bland, especially when comparing it to the Montreal Smoked Meat sandwich. Go with the MSM sandwich and you will not be disappointed. Can't speak to anything else, but why would you go to a deli and not get a deli-style sandwich.<br/><br/>Service - solid service for a weekday lunch. Staff was perfectly attentive.<br/><br/>Decor/ambiance - nice contemporary diner. Not necessarily fancy, but has the desirable deli feel (cooking area is visible, bar-top seating, etc...)<br/>Tip - DOUBLE THE MEAT

Wha a strange little place.   Food was good, but get get similar menu items in the neighbourhood for much less.  Servers were great, but the people (Cooks??) behind the counter were very rude to customers and staff.  I even gave my server an extra large tip and said "get out fast".   I can see why they are only open during the day.  Good luck . . .

Thank goodness for this place! Was craving just a sandwich for lunch, but something tasty and non-Subway-ish. What Sherbrook Street Deli has done I think is the key to any small eatery. Take simple food, and make it really well. I had the chicken salad sandwich and the bread was so soft, the chicken salad was so good and perfectly seasoned, and the side chips were homemade, salty and so crunchy (They were perfect ON the sandwich!), the coleslaw was a classic vinegar coleslaw (boo to creamy coleslaw!)...and the pickle is what I expect from a deli pickle. Everything just completely met my expectations and more.  I didn't even require supper I was so full and satisfied the rest of the day. (Maybe because i over ate? lol...who cares, it was so good!) <br/>My one small complaint, if you can call it that, was my sandwich just had too much mayo on it. I don't mind a little, but it hardly needed it and resulted in the mayo seeping through the holes of the rye bread and getting all over my fingers and quite messy. Next time I'd likely order without the mayo on the bread.  <br/><br/>Needless to say...this was a total win! I will definitely be back.

Best lox and bagel in the city hands down. Not the cheapest but you get what you pay for. Great soups and sandwiches as well. Friendly service - great spot in west Broadway.

Love this place. My husband and I have eaten here twice now and it is quickly becoming our "go to" restaurant. They do all of their meat in house and it is incredible! The quality is amazing. I've done the combo that comes with chips, coleslaw and a huge pickle each time and it goes so well with the huge sandwiches. My husband has gotten the corned beef and I've tried both the hot beef salami and the pulled beef sandwich. All were incredible and an awesome value. We like how simple yet decadent the meals are. <br/><br/>The restaurant atmosphere is also great. The décor is nice and suiting for the food, and it's always clean. The staff is also great each time, even asking what music we want them to play since we were the last ones in there. Good food and good times.

really cute place, not a ton of seating but we didn't mind waiting. bigger groups is a bit of a problem as we were 6 people and eventually made a 4 person table work.  <br/>everything was fresh; you can see the line fixing up your sandwich at the open counter. the in-house made chips are really thin and don't really seem seasoned which was okay because you get a really big pile and eventually i think salt would make your lips raw. i enjoyed topping them with the spicy in-house made mustard. <br/>we all got something different on the menu and it all was enjoyed. i opted for the house made soda, i cant say it was anything special. it seemed like what i create at home with some club soda and a flavoring but i did appreciate the bottomless factor so i could try a few flavors.

The food is overpriced for what you get. We had a corned beef sandwich and a Greek salad. The Greek salad came in a bowl and not a plate - hard to eat without leaving a lot of the salad on the table. Of, course, like most Winnipeg restaurants it was not a true Greek salad - using romaine lettuce as the base. The corned beef sandwich was meat and two slices of bread - nothing else - for $9.65. It was not crowded but we could not hear each other talk. The music was so loud that people at the tables were talking so loudly that we could not hear each other without shouting.

Over priced sandwiches and terrible service. Tried three times and will not be returning. I will go to that place in the exchange next time.

Well, not a good first experience... My friend and I walked in and the guy at the front took our orders and we paid for our food. I was wondering why we weren't being seated and were waiting from 10-15 minutes for a table to be cleaned up. The guy working the front was all over the place, getting drinks, taking food, cleaning up, etc. After waiting over 10 minutes I decided to ask if we could get a table. He was confused because he thought we wanted our food for takeout, but when we walked in he never asked if we were dining in or eating out, he just took our order. 5 more minutes goes by and we finally get seated. My dish was already at the table and my friends dish came 4 minutes after in a to go box. I had ordered the Izzy Asper sandwich (Beef Salami & choice of hot or cold mustard), and I chose to get hot mustard on mine. Taking a bite in, I felt like the mustard was very very very overpowering. It wasn't spicy, it just had that strong wasabi burn you get through your nose and tongue if you took a big chunk of wasabi. I struggled eating a half of my sandwich, and tried to take off as much mustard as I could but it honestly didn't help. I think the mustard honestly ruined my experience. They were very generous in spreading it on both sides of my bread, but eating wasabi tasting mustard is not enjoyable to me at all. Noticed that you can add regular things like lettuce, tomatoes, onions, pickles and stuff like that to your sandwich for an extra charge - but honestly for the price, it should already come with those things. The things I did enjoy were the kettle chips, and meat. I had to eat the meat itself without the bread drenched in this mustard and it was decent. Honestly, I don't know if I'll be back because my first experience was just overall negative, but maybe down the road I'll decide to give it another shot. Highly recommend NOT getting their "hot mustard".

Fantastic first visit after months of drooling over the deli's Instagram feed. Sat at the counter and had the pleasure of watching the cooks at work. I had the tender turkey breast (real turkey!) on handcut rye, flavourful potato salad and a generously-sized dill pickle. My partner had matzo ball soup (yummy but a wee bit salty) and the melt-in-your mouth hot corned beef on rye with a heap of crispy kettle chips. So good we couldn't keep from smiling between bites! Last month we visited another "iconic" city deli and Sherbrook Street Deli put them to shame in terms of flavour, presentation and overall experience. Wow! You ticked all the boxes for us. We'll be back soon.

Food was meh overall.  Had the potato latkes and beet borscht.  Latkes had great texture, crispy on the outside and soft (not mushy!) on the inside.. they just lacked much flavour.  Perhaps that's how latkes are supposed to be so the apple sauce/sour cream on the side can take them into sweet or savoury territory, but I was hoping for a little more pop to their flavour.  Borscht was fairly bland, but does come with a healthy dollop of sour cream lying beneath the surface.<br/><br/>A nice bustling atmosphere with friendly and attentive service, however our orders took 20+ minutes to escape the kitchen and we arrived to a half full restaurant before the lunch rush.  The sandwiches had by fellow diners were well liked (smoked meat, salmon salad, bbq), however all agreed the kettle chips needed some seasoning.

Ordered today using Skip the Dishes. Ordered just meat as no option for gluten free bread. Asked for cutlery hot mustard and s&p. I advised was in a hotel.<br/>Ordered came to about 40.00. Was missing the salmon lox, hot mustard, and cutlery. I contacted Skip who tried to get a hold of them with no luck. It goes to a full voicemail. Sent a msg to them of fb which was seen but no response. Skip got a hold of the owner now at 9pm and he said He wants to verify with the restaurant. He can spend all day verifying and lose my business. WTG Jon!. Are margins really that low that you argue with customers over a 5 dollar item that they claim is missing on a decent sized order. Really? Verify Away! Have fun as I have time to deal with you. Pity you do have decent food. Cut you meat thinner too nobody likes sinewy fat chunks.

I came here for the first time at the end of June. Loved it. Visited twice since then and Saturday I had mixed feelings about it. The first time and second time we came here the food was great, the portion size was great, the service was great. When I came back last week and brought my cousin and boyfriend. I was raving about how great it was and they came out a little disappointed. The food was good and so was the service but ordering our meal for take out...I was a little disappointed with the portion size. The other two times we went it was like a huge amount of food and we had leftovers. This time the sandwiches were much smaller, the amount of kettle fries we had was about half the amount from our previous visits and the coleslaw in the take out container with the kettle fries and sandwich made everything kind of soggy. Overall, the food was delicious but the inconsistency with the portion sizes is a bit weird.

Went here for the first time last week and this place literally blew my mind. We sat at the bar during a busy lunch hour and watched these guys just whip out sandwiches like it was no ones business. Got the smoked meat platter and I'm tell you, my whole life has changed. Come in, try an expensive sandwich but its damn good. Getting extra pickles next time and trying their matzo ball soup. I'm hooked

Delicious!!! My favorite is the regular smoked meat. Corn beef and the salmon lox are also delicious. If you like liver/pate, it's a tasty addition to the sandwiches. The servers are nice and the restaurant has a relaxing vibe.

Finally have time stop by with hubby a brunch date. We had smoke meat sandwich with house made mustard with chips coleslaw, BBQ beef sandwich and a bowl of borscht. Amazing food. Service excellent. BBQ sauce on beef sandwich on just perfect. Borscht was just perfect. Almost forgot we had cheesecake. Amazing! We will be back very often. Keep up the good work!

First time yesterday.  Picked this place because of the reviews on this site.  Very good food.  Smoked meat sandwiches are quite tall.  Menu advertised hot mustard but it was mild at best.  The potato chips are fried in canola oil which isn't the best for you but they were tasty.  I will return.

Went here for lunch and had the turkey sandwich and borscht. Both were excellent ! The waitress was very friendly and helpful. The only downside was the coffee. It was either way too strong or burnt. I'm a huge coffee lover but I couldn't drink much more than a few sips. Otherwise a great experience. 😀😀

Love this place! This was our first time visiting Sherbrook Street Delicatessen, I can see us coming here often, after today's deliciously awesome lunch! We were very impressed with the food and service! The place was packed but we were promptly greeted by friendly staff and seated at the bar. I liked sitting at the bar, it was warm and cozy and you were in on all the action. We shared the Earl Barrish Smoked Meat Platter. The sandwich was generously filled with tender, flavorful, melt in your mouth smoked meat on fresh soft Rye bread with a nice crust and a smear of tasty house mustard, the smoked meat was so tender if you so much as looked at it, it fell apart! The deli pickle was perfect, had just the right zing to them, crisp and tasty, what a deli pickle should taste like. Coleslaw was tangy and fresh, perfect oil and vinegar mix. The home-made kettle chips are thick, crunchy with just the right amount of salt. We shared a bowl of Mish Mash soup, it was like a whole meal in a bowl, very filling, a real comfort food! It had a flavorful broth, with a tender Matzoh ball, chicken, a healthy portion of fall apart smoked meat, a boiled egg cut in half, carrots, celery, and a little dill. The Knishes were delectable, so good, perfect, I know I will be back for more, I'm hooked! The (bottomless) house-made sodas, so delicious, many flavors to choose from. We thought the prices were great and the portions generous, we were happily stuffed when we left....Sherbrook Street Delicatessen is sure to become a culinary treasure, if hasn't already!

The meat here is pretty high quality and delicious. The only downfall are their sides of you decide to go with the platter which comes with a great pickle, but not very good coleslaw and plain chips. It's a bit pricey around 9-12 for a sandwich that averages 150g of meat. I've gone twice and the Montreal smoked meat as well as corned beef were good.

This place is unreal everything is made fresh every day in house right down to the dill pickles , if you want a soup and sandwitch this is the place to eat by far ! 5/5 with out a doubt ! The staff is amazing very talkative and friendly ! I really like how they make it right infront of you and there constantly washing there hands ! Another bonus unlike most soup and Sandwitch places there open later witch is a bonus to all the blue collar folk ! I loved when they pull the fresh beef out of the smoker/steamer made my mouth water !

Our Son and I<br/>visited the restaurant for lunch about a month ago. Our Son had previously lunched<br/>there with friends on two other occasions . We both ordered the Earl<br/>Barish smoked meat sandwich platter.  Prior to ordering, I asked our<br/>server if the smoked meat was quite fat. I was assured that it was not at<br/>all overly fat!  I am aware of course that there should/need to be<br/>some fat to enhance flavor. Upon receiving my sandwich, I was impressed with<br/>the presentation. It all looked very good albeit the sandwich was somewhat<br/>undersized for the price in my opinion. The kettle chips, coleslaw and<br/>dill pickle were quite good. However, my first bite of the smoked<br/>meat sandwich indicated to me that there was a lot of fat . Not<br/>wanting to take away or spoil the occasion { without compliant or comment<br/>}, I only ate half of my sandwich experiencing the same, lots of<br/>fat sensation. I asked and was given a container to take home what I<br/>had not consumed.  Today, I warmed up the sandwich a little bit<br/>in the microwave. I wanted to see how much fat there was in it . Upon pulling<br/>apart the half sandwich and separating the large pieces of fat from the meat<br/>itself, I was not surprised that the pure fat itself comprised at least 55%<br/>of that half sandwich. I do mean pure fat. It was not all sort of marbled<br/>with meat. It was pure white fat.<br/><br/> <br/><br/>If one likes lots<br/>and lots of fat, then order the Earl Barish Smoked Meat sandwich. The<br/>online photos of the sandwich are very misleading.  I myself, will  not<br/>visit the Sherbrook Street Deli again nor recommend it to others. <br/><br/> <br/><br/>On the positive<br/>side, service was courteous and prompt. <br/><br/> <br/><br/>Ron

Sherbrook Street Delicatessen is one of the new places that had opened on Sherbrook. They have been opened for quite some time now, but was only able to pay a visit there today. Open entering the delicatessen, you will see a large menu displayed on the wall to your right. One of the servers promptly greeted me and told me to to take a seat. You do not need to wait for a server to take you to your seat, so you could just simply sit down at a table upon arriving there.<br/><br/>Once seated the server provided me with menu to look over. The decor is lovely, and I especially love the photos that are displayed all along the wall. I decided to get the Earl Barish-Smoked Meat Sandwich ($9.75) that came with either mild or hot mustard. I opted for the hot mustard. You can make it into a platter for an additional $4, which includes kettle chips, coleslaw, and a pickle. I also ordered a pickle on the side for $1.35, which is two pickle halves. I also decided to try the chicken gribenes ($2.85), which are basically deep fried chicken skin, and is served with horseradish, I believe. They also have sweets, soups, salads, other appetizers and sides, and (bottomless) house-made sodas.<br/><br/>The smoked meat was super tender and delicious, though I wished they had added more hot mustard. The chicken gribenes were crispy and lightly seasoned with salt. Taste-wise, I felt the gribenes were somewhat lacking in flavour, and would probably not order it again.<br/><br/>Overall, I would definitely return to try their other sandwiches and their house-made sodas.

I went here today for lunch with a coworker. I loved the interior; hardwood, spacious, lots of photos on the walls! I got the Izzy Asper and made it into a platter~<br/><br/>The sandwich was good! Salami was great, the hot mustard was actually HOT (I think it's homemade too if I remembered correctly). The platter came with kettle chips (it was meh), pickle, and coleslaw (homemade too! tasted so good). However... I don't think it really justify $13-$14... Portion and taste wise...<br/><br/>I will come again, because the atmosphere was very welcoming!<br/>UPDATE SEPT 12-------<br/>I got the matza ball soup soup. I've heard of it, never tried it. I overheard a complain she didn't like it...etc. So it made me want to try it even more! I LOVE IT!!! The soup is full of flavour, generous amount of chicken an veggies... I'm in love. ❤❤❤ (Silly me, I though lt matza was the same as mozza cheese).

We went here in the late spring, my mom picked me up from the university and we came here. Its a nice place, with lots of art and photographs framed on the wall and a large wooden bartop to sit at. It was very busy as it was the lunch hour and we had to wait a bit to get a table. They cleaned it off and then a server came. <br/><br/>The food was good, I had lox on toast with cream cheese and capers and a bowl of borscht and she had chips, coleslaw and corned beef and a pickle. The food looked and tasted good, everything was going great, but what happened later that day was anything but great. <br/><br/>I was in and out of the bathroom for the next twelve hours, I was almost in a vomit induced coma. I proceeded to throw my leftovers out immediately and ask God for forgiveness for my sins and wondered what I had done to deserve this torturous illness. <br/><br/>I vowed to never return to this deli. I thought it was smoked salmon, but it was really salmonella. 0/10 would not recommend.
Secret Diner
In my experience the smoked meat sandwiches are consistently good, tender, flavourful and perfectly cooked. The house chips are a nice thick cut with a good crunch. The slaw needs a kick of ...... something, anything......please! it's crying out just asking for the seasoning rack to help it be the slaw it could be!<br/><br/>The service sadly is hit and miss, sometimes your server acts like they want a tip other times they act like they don't really care that your there but still expect a tip, funny that??!?

Great deli.  Filled up fast on a Friday afternoon at lunch time.  I would suggest going early.  I'm no expert when it comes to deli food so I took the recommendation of the waitress and ordered the salmon lox.  Other than the awkwardness of eating a bagel sandwich, it was excellent.  Potato latkes were awesome.  Knishes were good but at that point I think I was just overloaded with potato.  I think the only complaint I heard from my party was that all of the flavour sort of blended together in the smoked meat sandwich.  Service was excellent even when busy.  I'll be back to try the pickled tongue. ;)

Amazing corned beef sandwich with spicy mustard! Food truck is good but getting from the restaurant is much better! Cant wait to come back here

My wife and I were recommended to go here by her dentist and we absolutely loved it. The food was delicious, the meat was so tender and the kettle cooked chips were awesome. The service was great too, the young girl who served us actually let us sample some other meats so we knew what to order next time.

After having read the revues all saying how good this was, reviewing the pictures, and not having eaten at Shwartz's in Montreal, Center St. or Pickle Barrel in Ontario, or Stage or Carnegie or Cantors in Vegas or N.Y. in 6 years, I decided to give this old world style Deli a try.<br/><br/>First I am a Noel Bernier restaurant fan. <br/><br/>You can either do things right or wrong, but what you can not be is all things to all people, and despite the successes and failure successful restaurant people have, the Bernier group at the very least listens to their clients.  How refreshing. And in many cases make changes based on their observations.<br/><br/>Unlike the WOW group they are not all about the margin. They are about serving up quality food, at what seem to be someone higher prices, but always with client satisfaction at the root of what they do.<br/><br/>Ok.... so... I walk in later in the afternoon, not busy, and after reading about some sandwiches named after some known identities in the local restaurant scene.  Barrish from Sals, and I think Dickie Dee.  Papas, Kelekis,  Wienstein a lawyer?  How does he get into this group?  I notice there is no Woody Allen, the 24 oz combo behemoth from New York etc.<br/><br/>I order the Barrish to go, as well as the tongue for later on.<br/>The Barrish was sadly cut poorly and was totally overpowered by the strong peppers.  Pepper was all you could taste.  The outside of the briskit was a disproportionate amount of meat, and you therefore not taste the brisket.  Too bad because those slices of meat not being overpowered were absolutely delicious.  The Tongue was perhaps some of the best I have ever had.<br/><br/>Great soup venue if you like the traditional old world soups.  MishMash is a stable at the New York famous deli's and are actually meals in a bowl with a side of rye bread.<br/><br/>Wisely choosing City Rye for their breads, and keeping it traditionally simple with hot and mild mustard without getting too eclectic.<br/><br/>Adding the old world touch of home made seltzers good work.<br/>Ambiance Simple.<br/>Personnel, helpful and knowledgeable.<br/><br/>I will definitely be back for breakfast, a few more lunches, and a dinner or two, rounding out their different sandwiches, but sticking to what they are doing on their own which is basically everything.<br/><br/>I love the opportunity to go to an outstanding Deli in Winnipeg without having to wait until I travel!<br/><br/>A bit pricey... But a must try!<br/>And if you love pepper  go for the Montreal Smoked Meat.  Water by your side.<br/><br/>I did call the Deli after I got home about how poorly the sandwich was cut with a disproportionate amount of the outside pepper.... they took my number and I was told the manager would be calling.... 2 weeks in still waiting!<br/><br/>Come on!
Yummy
A great deli with classic selection and new flair. The pickled beef tongue sandwich is a shining star. Hands down best coleslaw in town. The smoked meat is fantastic. <br/><br/>The place looks similar to the former Fitzroy. Definitely a must visit.

Great food, atmosphere and service! After hearing lots of rave reviews from friends about Sherbrook St Deli, I had to try it out. The service is inviting and friendly immediately as you arrive. Not as packed as some delis I've been to in Montreal, but with summer coming up, I won't be surprised if they eventually have lines out the door. <br/><br/>I ordered the Earl Barish (regular Smoked meat) with house made chips and a pint of Sherbrook St Pilsner (made by Great Western out of Saskatoon). The smoked meat sandwich was delicious, the meat was melt in your mouth, the bread was fresh and had a great non-store bought taste to it. The hot mustard was too much for me though, I could barely breath from it, but I'll know better for next time. The homemade potato chips were tasty and lightly salted - better than homemade chips I've had at other restaurants in town. I'll be returning - it's better than some of the smoke meat I had in Montreal!

stopped by the trailer on Pembina. Staff treat you like a friend and the service was excellent. And the food....WOW...it was awesome. will definitely will be back
Food Musings
When traveling in Vancouver this past spring and spending the lunch hour walking through the Gastown neighbourhood, I spotted a restaurant with a lineup out the door and along the sidewalk. Dubbed “Meat & Bread” it served exactly that. In the “every old is new again” category, delis have recently made a huge come back serving…well, meat and bread! The Sherbrooke Street Delicatessen (102 Sherbrooke St.) is one of Winnipeg’s many new offerings in this dining category. Perfectly placed in the great neighbourhoods of Wolseley and West Broadway (in the space formerly occupied by Fitzroy), owner Jon Hochman has gone back to his family roots. The kosher style “New York” deli, doles out traditional offerings like corned beef, smoked meat, beef salami, salmon lox and turkey breast. Our grandbaby loved the latter. Rounding off the cut meat section of the menu is the inclusion of pickled tongue. In university a good friend of mine consumed a pickled tongue sandwich almost every day for her lunch. Suffice it to say, I have never had a hankering.

Disappointing. They've changed the name but the place still has the stuck up quality of Fitzroys.<br/>Basically it is just a sandwich shop. The Entrees on the menu are not available. <br/>I had the smoked meat sandwich which was OK. <br/><br/>Skip the sides for another $6. The kettle chips aren't as good as Miss Vickies. (Why<br/>can't they do fries? Or gourmet burgers?) My Motzah Ball soup is better than theirs.<br/><br/>My advice is get some Smith's Corned Beef at De Lucas and City Rye Bread, and make your own.<br/><br/>I like to see restaurants succeed but they have to put out more.

Room to Grow. I appreciate what the Sherbrook Street Delicatessen is attempting to do, but think that it falls well short of the mark. The "New York" servings were not even close to the real thing, plus at least 1/4 of it was in tiny shreds, rather than slices. Smoke and spicing was minimal for the smoked meat, a far cry from Schwartz's smoked meat, or the deep spicing of New York, Los Angeles, or even Portland pastrami. I asked for mustard, but got horseradish. The bagels had a nice boiled sheen, but were soft and bread-y within. Cream cheese was whipped. I'll try them again in six months to a year, to see if they've grown into the kind of deli that I'd love to see in the city.

First time going, nice servers but menu didn't have many choices other than very plain sandwiches and menu was also very confusing, wouldn't go again.

Super delicious... Came last week. What a great add on to Winnipeg. Delicious and more delicious. Most of the staff are extremely friendly and knowledagable. So nice to have a kosher deli really close by thats very fresh. The manager wasn't very friendly nor did he seem to be happy to be there. Was on his phone a lot and gossiping about social media and could here him talking about his ex girlfriend. Not pleasant when you are trying to enjoy such a great meal. The sodas were also really good. Only Negative was the so called manager. Great job!

Smokin'. My boyfriend and I stopped by last Sunday for a quick lunch. My partner had the Earl Barrish (smoked meat sandwich platter), whereas I had the salmon lox platter. I had a couple bites of the smoked meat, so can comment on both. The smoked meat definitely outshone my salmon lox. I found the salmon lox to not be flavourful enough, as it lacked salt and smokiness. The salmon lox sandwich also contained tomatoes, cucumbers, and cream cheese. I found that the tomatoes were unnecessary. The smoked meat sandwich was so good, especially with the hot mustard and soft bread. Wish my boyfriend had shared more than just a couple bites with me. Will be back!

Another great Winnipeg restaurant in the works. Three is us dropped in last Sunday, April 26. Had the Matzah Ball Soup, Earl Barish and Corned Beef. They were all superb. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff. Loved the soda drinks, ginger ale and cherry. Will be back.

Best sandwiches in the Peg. First visit to this deli and we were very impressed with the food and service. Excellent quality and taste. We had a corned beef sandwich and also the smoked meat sandwich with chopped liver. They were easily the best sandwiches we has ever tasted in Winnipeg, in fact we enjoyed them more than the ones we had at the famed Carnegie Deli in New York City. Although pricey with the bill being over $40 for 2 sandwiches and 2 pop, it was well worth the money.

Super friendly staff! Will be better once the liquor license is approved. I had the goldeye salad sandwich which was delish! I've been craving it ever since. The matzo soup wasn't the best I've had but it was hearty and tasty. Will be back there very soon
Intrepid Diner
Not Spectacular, but Very Good. I enjoyed my lunch here and would definitely return. I do not, however, think that this place is the very best in the city. <br/><br/>The restaurant is quite small with a few tables. The place is popular and fills up quickly. I got there just before noon and five minutes later there was a line-up of six or so people. As it was, I shared their biggest table (seats six) with another couple. The walls are jammed with pictures of iconic Winnipeg locations and of people with ties to the city. The tables and chairs are pretty plain. In addition to the few tables, there is a counter that can seat a few more people on stools. <br/><br/>The server was friendly and had a good knowledge of the menu. It is a traditional deli menu with various sandwiches and items such as grebenes which are not on the menu of most Winnipeg restaurants. They also have a few dessert options but I didn't order dessert. <br/><br/>My biggest complaint is the size of the portions. I had the smoked meat sandwich. It is not quite the same as Montreal smoked meat. To be fair, they do not claim it to be like Montreal smoked meat and the server readily conceded this. It was served warm, seasoned very well and had a good flavour to it. I liked that I was given a choice of bread thickness as well as what kind of mustard to put on my sandwich. The price of a basic smoked meat sandwich is $9.75. I paid an additional $3 to make it "New York" style, which is extra meat. My sandwich did not appear to be appreciably bigger than the regular sized sandwiches that the people around me had ordered. While I enjoyed the taste, the portion was not enough to fill me up. I ordered the house made kettle chips. While they tasted good, the only seasoning I could discern was salt. I will take them at face value that they are made in house, but they tasted like they had been taken from a bag of old dutch potato chips. If these had been served while warm, they probably would have been a winner. <br/><br/>The place is located next door to another busy restaurant and is across from a hotel. As such it can be difficult to find parking along Sherbrook Street.<br/><br/>Would I go back? Yes, I would. I liked the taste of the food, but am wary of the portion sizes. It makes the overall value of the meal go down.

Fantistic!. Stopped in to try this place before noon on the weekend. Decided breakfast sounded good. Had two eggs, potato latkes and sour cream, toast and corned beef. Hubs went out on a limb and ordered pickled beef tongue, which he adored. Apparently breakfast is a weekend special, but they may want to rethink that and add a couple more options. Also tried the gribenes, which are fried chicken skin, utterly addictive and delicious with a side of horseradish. Truly excellent coffee served here, as well, in large mugs and constantly refilled. Many more things I want to try here, including house-made sodas.

So Good!. We came here a few weeks ago, but it was the long weekend, and they were closed early. Understood, so we went somewhere else that was kinda disappointing. We knew that we'd be back here. We came for a late lunch on Saturday, so there were tables available. It smells so delicious when you walk in the door, you just know the food is going to be great. Love the old Winnipeg photos on the wall. Good memories there. BF ordered the Jim Pappas Corned Beef Platter and I ordered the Earl Barrish Smoked Meat Platter, toasted, with mild mustard. The sandwiches were generously filled with delicious meat. BF enjoyed his lunch. I preferred the Smoked Meat to the Corned Beef because it was less fatty. The pickle was huge and very tangy. The coleslaw was how I prefer it, with a vinegar based dressing (as opposed to a creamy dressing) and a quite generous bowl. The home-made kettle chips are really good, with just enough salt to entice a person to eat just one more! We each ordered the house-made sodas, which were quite nice and refreshing. We spoke with the friendly server, and found out that the "Plates" will be eliminated on their next menu, and BF was quite disappointed because he was looking forward to trying the Beef Short Ribs. There are other items on the menu that we would like try, such as the Lox, and the Matzo Ball Soup, so we definitely be back again. Go . . . you won't be disappointed.

Finally, a perfect smoked meat sandwich. Tried it Friday night, I had the corned beef platter, and my fiance had the smoked meat.<br/>Smoked meat sandwich was better only because it wasn't as fatty as the corned beef, but the corned beef had exceptional flavor.<br/>We would not hesitate to return or recommend.

Exactly what a deli should be, and more!. I could understand if after reading all of these reviews, you thought; "Nah, too good to be true."<br/>You would be wrong. Very wrong.<br/><br/>Sherbrook Deli is everything it should be, and more. The meat, salmon, bagels, and basically everything except the rye is made in house, and it makes a difference. The meat is perfectly seasoned - not drowning in spice, but with enough oomph to make you stop and contemplate that first bite (not kidding, I literally had to stop and savour that first bite - so good).<br/><br/>Have you been to the famous Schwartz's in Montreal? <br/>Sherbrook Deli is better. Not just because their "Montreal Smoked Meat" is thick-cut, perfectly balanced between lean and fatty, smoked-in-house and just damn delicious, but also because the rest of their menu is just as good.<br/>The corned beef is a fracking revelation. The salami (vursht, to us Yiddish types), is heavenly. Honestly I had no idea that salami could taste so damn good, but it does.<br/><br/>And then there's the Lox. <br/>On a homemade bagel that's *almost* a Montreal bagel in the style of St. Viateur, with just the right amount of cream cheese, onion and tomato, finished with the most delicately seasoned and cured lox I've ever had - CUT TO ORDER. It literally does not get any better than this.<br/><br/>Also, instead of french fries, they serve home-made thick-cut potato chips which are (again) better than you could possibly imagine. Just the right crunch, just the right salt.<br/><br/>I've yet to try the tongue (next on my list) or the blintzes but both look fantastic. <br/><br/>The only actual miss that I've seen is the turkey, which is a bit too plain for me. Also, while the Chicken Soup broth is to die for and the veggies just the right tenderness, my family swears by rock-hard matzah balls. But if you're like most people and prefer the fluffy kind, the ones at Sherbrook will suit you nicely.<br/><br/>I've been to Sherbrook Deli twice a week since it opened and have no plans to slow down. Forget Caplansky's and Centre Street in Toronto, forget Schwartz's and Reuben's in Montreal. Sherbrook Street in Winnipeg is the new macher of delis.

Finally got to check this hotspot out, and it did not disappoint. Had the smoked meat sandwich and sliced corned beef, both were delish, happy there's the option to order meat without the bread! No liquor licence yet, brewsky would've been the icing on the cake;)

Devine Jewish Comfort Food. 3 hours later and my girlfriend and I are still raving about the juicy smoked beef and savory pickled tongue. The matzah ball soup was transcendent. Sherbrook and Bernsteins are the two best delis in Winnipeg.

Best Smoked Meat I've Tried.. Better than Schwartz Deli and the borscht was a great side. The meat was very moist, flavorful, just enough fat, great mustard, and decent rye. Can't wait till they get their liquor licence.

Should you go?... YES!. We had wonderful service and at the time the place was pretty near capacity. The prices were comparable to other hot sandwiches in Winnipeg, and for the amount of meat you get they are a damn good value. So many people gripe over prices but I didn't find this place guilty of overcharging for what was provided. The place is small and wind blows through when the door is open, given this place is a good new option for "take out food" the door opens frequently my one little complaint was that it was cold, but this is going to be an awesome summer joint. The meat was tender and good quality, the dessert warm and delish. I hope this place is around for a long time to come and I will totally be using this place as a "take away food" option in the future. In a city were your take out options are somewhat limited if you want to be served promptly this place is a welcome addition to the city.<br/><br/>Much Love<br/>-The Chubby Dumpling

Everything we had was delish. I had the smoked meat sandwich and red beet borsch. Hubby had their breakfast special and the matzah ball soup. Even our toddler loved the food. Would definitely visit again.

Limited hours. Tried to go here, but they were only open until 8 on a Friday night. Is it just me or does that seem like a fatal mistake?

It's like Montreal all over again. I love a good deli sandwich, and the Sherbrook Street Deli definitely doesn't fail to deliver. I tried the smoked meat sandwich with mild mustard. WOW!! It took me all the way back to my trip to Montreal and the sandwiches there. Will definitely be coming back many times over.

It was OK. We went for lunch. It's a nice spot. Not many tables so I can see it being a bit of a wait at times. We got a table right away. The Old time Winnipeg pictures on the wall are a nice design feature. <br/><br/>The smoked meat didn't have much of a "smoke" flavour and was dry. It was also sliced incorrectly (not the way you are suppose to slice meat). <br/><br/>The Potatoe Latkes were small and were just ok. I've had better.<br/><br/>The house "Hot" mustard was very good. <br/><br/>The pickles were good. <br/><br/>Service was quick and our waitress was nice. However, the guy that brought us our food was confused as to what was the smoked meat sandwich and what was the corned beef sandwich. <br/><br/>They were out of three things on the menu. <br/><br/>Would I go back? Yes I Would give it another try. A table next to us ordered what looked like the Matza Ball Soup and it looked great. I'll give that a try next time.

A nice addition to the neighbourhood. I was soooo sad when Fitzroy closed a few months ago because there were so many damn good dishes there. Well, Jon Hochman has come back with Sherbrook Street Deli in the same location. The decor is the same except the wall now has a collection of framed pictures of old school Winnipeg to create some nostalgia. Winnipeg now has 3 really good sandwich shops - King + Bannatyne, Nicks on Broadway and now Sherbrook Street Deli. Though this one is the only one that brands itself as kosher style meaning it's not actually kosher but no pork, shellfish and meat/dairy together. Which made me think....will they ever bring that amazing Fitzroy cheeseburger on the menu as a special since that has meat/dairy? That burger was utterly brilliant with the chicken skin in it....I really hope it makes it way back in one form or another.<br/><br/>Onto the food - the meats are all made in house and City Bread supplies the rye bread. The sandwich platters all come with a pickle, home made chips and coleslaw (vinegar base dressing) and are about $12-$14.<br/>Jim Pappas - corned beef ($13.45) - juicy but flavour was subtle.<br/>Earl Barish - smoked meat ($13.75) - this is the one to get - good flavour, juicy and the right amount of fat.<br/>Irving Katz - pickled tongue ($13.85) - another great one....tender and flavourful, don't let the tongue freak you out as you won't even notice.<br/>Turkey breast ($12.95) - this was served cold and tasted like a regular sandwich....skip this one.<br/>They have hot and mild mustard as an option on the sandwiches and in squeeze bottles. The hot didn't taste that hot to me and had a hint of sweetness so the mustard didn't do it for me.<br/><br/>If you're cholesterol levels are good - try the chicken gribenes (fried chicken skin) - you get a small glass full of it for $1.75. It's truly a sinful splurge as I usually avoid chicken skin but it tastes like chips. Share it amongst a few of your friends and you won't regret it. The spicy karnatzel $2.50 is a spicy beef stick akin to a hot rod - just a thicker version...it's in between the texture of a pepperoni stick and beef jerky texture. Texture was a little odd for me so I wouldn't order this again.<br/><br/>Overall, good deli concept that fits nicely into the west end of broadway with all their diverse eatery options. Service was attentive and friendly.

Unbelievable. Had the smoked meat sandwich with hot mustard. Probably not only the best in the city but the best I've had anywhere, including Montreal and New York.<br/><br/>Bagels are also amazing (homemade)<br/><br/>Will be back often

Delish deli. I came on the opening day to try out Winnipeg's newest deli. The decor and music are nostalgic, with a floor (with an intentional foot print pattern) that will make any neat freak cringe. We ordered the Earl Barrish - smoked meat sandwich platter. It's a smaller sandwich that comes with regular mustard and about an inch of smoked, fatty meat oozing out. The smoked flavor is subtle, but the tenderness and peppery rind make up for flavor. The large portion of coleslaw was an enjoyable, vinegar based dressing, not typical mayo. The chips were kettle style, crunchy and seasoned. I ordered the matzah ball soup, which came with fresh dill garnish, big chunks of carrot, celery, 2 small matzah balls, and a big heap of shredded chicken served in a clear broth. If you like homey soups, this is a perfect choice. If you like their Facebook page, you can get a free pickle. Overall, it's like a fancy, hipster version of Montreal's famous Shwartz's Deli.

Very good, made my taste buds happy. Got the Paul Burish - Smoked Meat. Never had something like this before and can't wait to come back

There are no amount of superlatives that can fully describe the Sherbrook Street Delicatessen. In short, they fully achieved their goal of homemade traditional Kosher style meats and sandwiches and is a wonderful addition to the bulging sandwich market of Winnipeg. From the beautiful restaurant's exteriors to the wonderful staff, delicious food and prompt service, this restaurant is an experience that every Winnipeger should behold; do yourself a favour and go.

Having enjoyed my breakfast, I couldn’t wait to try lunch. So the next day I went in for a late lunch. One reason for this was I wanted to visit once when it was off-peak, having gone at breakfast when there was a constant stream of customers dining in or getting take-out. Plus, although I enjoyed watching the chefs at work when I sat at the counter, I wanted to try table service as well. I already knew what I was going to have when I arrived at the restaurant. When my server arrived I said don’t bother with a menu because I know what I’m going to have. At that moment I ran into my first disappointment. I was going to try the Pickled Tongue Sandwich Platter, but alas they were all out of the Pickled Tongue. This was only a minor disappointment to me, as I was already aware that they had been busier than they expected. It happens with new restaurants. I didn’t have to hesitate long, as I changed my order to the Salami Sandwich. I had watched the salami being sliced on Saturday, and this looked like a good choice. I added a bowl of Matzoh Ball Soup to the sandwich platter. While I waited I discovered what would be my second disappointment. There were no pickles to be found in the Sherbrook Street Delicatessen. The soup came first. It was a delicately seasoned chicken broth, with a couple of Matzoh balls, chicken, carrots, celery, and a little dill. I really liked the fact that the vegetables still had some degree of crispness to them. The Sherbrook Street Delicatessen offers a real fine, Chicken Matzoh Soup. I mentioned at the beginning that while the prices may be a little higher they still offer real good value. A close-up of the salami sandwich below should offer a good explanation of what I mean. That is one big pile of salami. You really need to see the sandwich up close to appreciate how much salami is there. The sandwich platter comes with hand cut potato chips. If you like chips for their salty goodness, you’ll find plenty of it in this platter. The coleslaw
