Review Tre Visi Cafe - Winnipeg

Luna D. K.
Small restaurant on Stafford with 6-7 tables we had olives for appetizer and pasta. They were very flexible with changing the type of pasta from ribbon to spaghetti. Food was very good and lots of flavor and huge portions. Most of the pasta on the menu will come with half portion and full portion options. Half portion was still plenty of food for me - if you are indecisive and want to try out couple different pasta doing half portion would be a great idea. Most things on the menu can be done gluten free too.

Easy 5/5 stars. Food was the best in Winnipeg. Everything seemed so fresh and enjoyable. I have been here many many times and the Chef never disappoints. From the simplest as a ceaser salad to their fettuccine Alfredo, it's to die for. Highly recommend this restaurant.

Lovely service, delicious food, amazing cream brulee! It was amazing finding a place with Limoncello ❤️

We came here for the first time and really enjoyed it. Food was delicious and service was wonderful. Only suggest would be to turn the lights down a little more and turn up the music a bit to add to the atmosphere (was almost silent). We will be back and will recommend!

Nice cozy little restaurant with very pleasant staff. Excellent service and generous portions of really great food. Definitely somewhere I would go again. Note: Reserve a table beforehand, especially on weekend.

Excellent service and meal. Well worth a last minutes late evening reservation.

The atmosphere and decor of this little cafe was very nice and elegant. Based on the good reviews we were excited to give this place a try. Service was ok. The calamari was definitely the best we’ve had, very flavorful. But the pasta dishes we got were a little underwhelming. My boyfriends spaghetti and meatballs was apparently very salty. I got the penne which was actually quite delicious, but some of the chicken was very fatty and hard to get down, otherwise it was tasty. I think we might try different dishes next time, if we decide to come back. I wish we had a better experience than we did because of how well this place is spoken about!

Excellent as always. I've been here 3 times and have enjoyed the food every time. Great sauces, and although the pasta is made a little harder than I'd prefer, it's still great food. My current go to for pasta. The chicken is also quite good. Excellent service as well

The flavor of the food and the service was fine...but...never before have I been served a plate with just 2 items on it. 3 pieces of veal with some fettuccine beside it. Lots of meat. Too much meat! 2 pieces of veal & some side salad would have been better. Too pricey for such a simple basic meal.

Bit of a wait even though we had reservations. Food was worth the wait. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Chef stopped at a few table and asked if everything was ok. Wonderful atmosphere.

Came here for dinner with a friend, we enjoyed shopping in the surrounding neighborhood and we were fortunate that they had a table and could accommodate us.

The dining room is modern, well lit and nicely appointed. Service was attentive throughout the entire evening. They have a limited wine list, but wait staff were familiar with tasting notes and did a good job suggesting pairings.

Food was well prepared and very tasty. My only disappointment was with portion sizes. Also, bread does not come standard with the meal. We ordered the focaccia, two starters and an entree each and was only just satisfied. Despite the portion size, the food was absolutely delicious!

If you are in the area, Tre Visi is definitely worth trying out. With the abundance of tasting menu restaurants nearby, it is nice this place is sticking to traditional restaurant/trattoria style dining.

The Swizzle Styx dined here this week and it was ok. We had the zucchini fries and they were really nice. The several pasta dishes were good but I would stay away from the salads, pretty much nothing but lettuce.

I would say Tre Visi offers the best Italian food in the city. Their pasta(s) are so fresh and the service is incredible. I do intend to return many times to try other items on their menu! I highly recommend the capellini dorati for the seafood lovers.

Came for here a girls night out. Nice, quaint setting. A refined menu with just enough items to choose from. They also have daily features aside from their main menu. Their starters are actually quite big for the price! The pasta dishes are also quite big, I ended up taking half of mine home. Service was good, our food was delicious and a nice atmosphere. Would love to check it out again.

Despite arriving around 7:30 on a Thursday night while they were quite full we were greeted shortly and seated promptly after a sever having cleared a table. Service was prompt and even though myself and my dining companion only wanted entrées, no drinks, nothing special, we were not abandoned like some servers will if they are not able to upsell. Service remained fairly attentive throughout the stay.

The restaurant itself is quite small, perhaps 40 people max. I would certainly have made a reservation if we weren't just walking in off the street having been in the area. If you are looking for a quiet little place, however, this may not be it for you. It's lovely, sure, but it does not have any means to dampen sound via any surface so the ambiance is quite loud. It isn't, however, too dark and the decor is lovely.

Prices on the entire menu were very reasonable and more than adequate for a small restaurant. My partner decided on a pizza ($14) and I the Oriechette Shue Shue (OR-ee-eh-KET-ee - $16). The pizza was essentially a delightful margherita pizza but with crumbled Italian sausage which was deemed by my companion as possibly the best all around pizza he's ever tasted. The crust was thin but held up well under the weight, had good flavour on its own, the sauce was full and rich, the sausage was not too spicy and was really excellent and the cheese just added to it all. My pasta dish was rich, full, round, and comforting while the ricotta cheese (tasted just like goat, I've never had ricotta like this before) was velvety smooth and really rounded out the whole dish elevating it to a whole new level.

All in all, I highly suggest this venue and I am very much looking forward to my next visit!

Best Italian in Winnipeg - Went with friends for a birthday celebration. The Fettuccine alla Diva was amazing... shrimp, mushrooms and asparagus in a delicious tomato cream sauce. Rigatoni also reported to be excellent. Creme brûlée topped off the evening on a yummy note. Too bad the focaccia is no longer complimentary, but it's worth the price. Great service. Reservations are a must for Saturdays. Seatings from 6 to 8 p.m. and 8 to 10 p.m. can make for a rushed finish, but the restaurant's small size makes it understandable. Doesn't get much better!

My first time in this place since they moved from the Exchange district. All I can say is great food and really great service. Ordered their special for the night - Mushroom Ravioli and prawns with fresh tomato sauce. Was delicious!
My friend ordered for the Pasta Alle diva with white sauce and said it was also great! they also had a great selection of wine. Dessert as cheesecake with fresh raspberry and blueberry = excellent!
Highly recommended.

Delicious food- exceptional service!. Tonight was my first time at Tre Visi- chosen based on Italian cuisine and location.
The waitress we had was named Brenda and was hands down, the best waitress I've ever encountered. She was so helpful with the menu and we ordered her recommendations and were not disappointed! We ordered a lot and she asked us if we wanted to wait between courses, gave us a little complimentary bread as we wanted to try it (mmmmmm) but didn't want to fill up. She could even tell that I was stuffed up and suggested a great soup for my congestion- not on the menu - but a light broth with Parmesan and egg-- just very thoughtful. The food was very good. I am sure there are other very good Italian restaurants in the city, but I think the "Brendas" are few and far between and service like that brings people back. She is truly a credit to that business!

We were a table of 8 for my mother's 87th birthday dinner. The service was exceptional, the food delicious and the overall experience enjoyable. I have been a number of other times and enjoy the wine list, pastas and salads.

Nicely Surprised!. Warm attentive wait staff, delicious food - excellent portions, attractive plating - good wine list and a bright room with enough distance between tables for private conversation. The calamari were light and crisp, the beet/fennel salad a refreshing taste, the pastas (forest ravioli and seafood linguini) was pretty terrific and the dessert dense and chocolate rich. I agree with another review that there was a liberal use of salt, so if I return I will ask for less than usual please!
Was pleasantly surprised by the choice of daily specials. I would have chosen one, but eat those particular choices quite regularly at home. All in all no real complaints here!

Perfect Date Spot. The chefs here are excellent and it's a wonderful space that feels both casual and upscale at the same time. Calamari is the best in the city- always hot, crisp, and never greasy. Chiccio while simple (crunchy pizza strips with herbs and salt) are addictive. The pastas are outstanding, you can't go wrong with any of them though my favorite might be the orchiette with arugala and ricotta. Mains are equally delicious, stand-bys are the Shoemaker's chicken and the veal scallopini. Treat yourself and add a side of heavenly fettucine alfredo to your main! I haven't tried the pizzas yet. The wine selection is great too. So happy to have this great neighbourhood restaurant. Winnipeg is lacking in places like this- comfortable, lively, and delicious!

Had a wonderful evening and dinner here tonight. Excellent food. Great wine. Timely service. Couldn't ask for more.

Almost didn't get a table and wish we Hadn't. This was my first time visiting this location. The place was very busy, and I did not have a reservation so my friend and I almost didn't get a seat. I need to stress how awful it is to have paper menus....just was horrible, and then left on my table to be used as a table-mat. That is tacky and awful when you are paying for good food and they leave paper (child like menu) on the table for sauce and oil to cover it, it automatically cheapens your experience.
For starters we had Caprese, and 4 Polpette (meat balls) the meat was very dry and tough with no flavour, and the sauce was extremely salty something like store bought sauce or Olive Garden (not home cooked restaurant quality). For main dishes we had Spaghetti Puttanesca and Scotadito DiAgnello (Lamb) I found my Lamb just that Lamb no seasoning, nothing special no seasoning or anything very bland. My Friend didn't mind her pasta, in fact she took the rest of it home. Only to discover the next day that she had someone else's gnarled on chicken bones and risotto. Needless to say she is also not a massive fan now. I highly do not recommend this place over priced Olive Garden (with out the bread....that stale stuff is extra here).

Walked into the restaurant at 8:40 on a Friday evening, weren't greeted by the staff and saw one empty table and a server came to us and asked for how many (which was 5) and he said 'yeah no, I don't have a table for 5' not offering us a wait time or other polite conversation. Will never return that's for sure!

My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to the cafe. We both agreed the zucchini fries were to die for. Served with an aioli dip, they were unlike any app we had ever tried. Highly recommend them! I ordered the gnocchi with cream pesto as an entree and loved it. The Riesling also paired nicely with my meal. Great service too. Will be back with my boyfriend very soon.

Good. But salty!. We eat here at least once a month. We live in the neighbourhood and enjoy having easy access to Italian comfort food and a well-chosen wine list. Food is always *mostly* tasty, but it's beyond us why the kitchen insists on using so much salt. We're certainly no health freaks and probably eat more salt than most people, but a professional kitchen that relies on salt to build flavour is only demonstrating a lack of ability.

Great Italian food is about simple ingredients with superb execution. Talented Italian chefs allow the ingredients to speak for themselves, ensuring that their guests are treated to well-balanced dishes. Tre Visi is good, no question, but a more thoughtful touch in the kitchen would go a long way to making it great.

So good!. My husband and some friends went for dinner Febuary 13th 2014. Oh my it was fantastic!!!! I am already asking my husband to take me back! I had the meat balls for and appitizer and my husband had the ceaser salad as we both were sharing.... Both were fab..... The main course was even better I had the veal and my husband had the saffron cream sauce pasta with scallops and prawns and wow done to perfection.... Service was wonderful and the prices were not too bad...no complaining from anyone at our table..lol and with the group I go with love good food.

Pricey but wonderful.. We were a party of 4 on Dec. 14, 2013. All of our meals were fantastic. I started with the Panzanella which was very tasty but the focaccia bread comes pre mixed in with the balsamic vinegar so it was a little wet. Then I had the Pollo Parmiggiana ($21) which was a nice size portion, very moist with lots of cheese. I added the spahetti and olive oil, garlic sauce to the plate for an additional $3.50. The service was very good and all of us really enjoyed ourselves.

Calamari calamari. The calamari is best in North America. Pasta is outstanding. Busy but because it's worth it!!!

Great food!. Went here on a Saturday night and it was packed, which was okay because i had made a reservation the previous day. The service was good and the food was amazing. We had the zucchini fries which were so light and delicious. My boyfriend ordered the baked oysters and he enjoyed them a lot (I'm not a seafood fan so I didn't try them). I got the gnocchi in a pesto cream sauce which was great. They were light and fluffy and such a large portion which was great since the prices were a little higher than your average place. My boyfriend got a spicy sausage dish and I think I liked his even better than mine which is saying a lot because I normally don't go for straight up red sauces.

My only complaints were that it took forever for the food to arrive. I don't think it should take over an hour and a half to serve what was essentially pasta dishes, even when they are homemade. I understand that it was very busy, but the restaurant itself is quite small so I wasn't sure why it was such a big delay. The other thing that I didn't like was the layout and that we were sitting right beside the door. The space clearly wasn't built to be a restaurant and in the owners' desire to maximize the small space, it left it lacking. People coming in to wait for tables to open were basically standing in the middle of several tables and the patrons eating there. That said, this problem was only at the front of the restaurant so next time I visit (which I'm looking forward to), I would be sure to ask for a table at the back.

Great double date night!. Friend chose this location as we had never been. Can't say I wasn't impressed more. It was a regular busy Saturday night, however our table was promptly cleared and re-set from the last guests. Our service was impeccable, we never had to ask for anything as she had already anticipated it and was ready. We were enjoying great, lively conversation with our guests and the server always knew the perfect time to interject. I'm sure our table was loud, but we didn't feel out of place or have to struggle to hear one another. The pasta, seafood and appetizers were authentic, genuine and large portions!! We would definitely enjoy this restaurant again.

Neighborhood soul food fave is gone. After four times visiting Tre Visi Cafe we are no longer in doubt that it is nowhere near the standard of its downtown location. The no reservations policy is a start. The simple decor is nice but the bright lights destroy the cozy feel of what this neighborhood spot could offer. Some past dishes are equal to the mcdermot location but not all. While the foccacia is good and the pane fritto is yummy but fatty, a neighborhood restaurant should offer bread. Other than the salads, there are no vegetables to accompany fish dishes or even as a side. If you ask for vegetables they tell you there aren't any. The wine list is marginal and lacks in breadth of selection. We are hoping the Tre Visi team take heed.

A Hiccup in the Tre Visi Chain. Does not live up to the Tre Visi banner. Expected more from this cafe. The original Tre Visi and Sensi Wine bar have set a very high standard, and this cafe does not live up to that standard.

Was disappointed by the very dull menu and my partner and I almost left because we didn't see anything we'd like to order. But we stayed and had the calamari that was tasty. But then we had the boring Bowie pasta with a bland tomato sauce and dry horrible bits of sausage. The special grilled shrimp were tasty but came with horrible fettuccine Alfredo that had a congealed skin on top - ugh. The service was extremely poor and no one even came to take our drink order until 20 min after we were seated. Don't sit anywhere near the door in the winter! We will not be going back.

Wow, almost 3 years to the day from my previous review I can say I am happy with my return visit to this location. My last visit was so terribly salty that it took a lot for me to return here for dinner but I am glad I did. We had a lovely dinner as service was warm and friendly and dishes were reasonably priced and very much hit the spot when it comes to comfort Italian food.

Antipasti $5-$14, pizzas are ~$15, primi $16-$19 and secondi $19-$25.
I still remember the days when the focaccia was complimentary (at the old McDermot locaion) but for $3 you can get the Focaccia Casalinga (4 pcs) with house made with xvoo, balsamic vinegar. A nice starter of fluffy focaccia to share with 2-4 people.

The gnocchi al pesto ($18) are not the pillowy gnocchi from the McDermot location but they are still fine. Not overly dense and better than average in a thick pesto cream sauce that probably needed more pesto than cream.

The vitello piccata ($24) is the veal scaloppini with white wine, lemon and capers. The veal was very tender and the classic sauce was perfectly balanced. The secondi comes with pasta pomodoro, fettuccine Alfredo or grilled vegetables. I had the fettuccine Alfredo which is a small portion and probably best in that portion as its a decadent caloric overload of delicious carbs and cream. The whole dish was great.

Our whole table enjoyed every dish ordered and had a lovely time. This is a great casual neighborhood restaurant where you can order some comfort dishes and enjoy good conversation in a not too loud place with a bottle of wine.

*************************

Feb 10/2013 review:
Very busy - no reservations. Still prefer Tre Visi on McDermot.. Tre Visi Cafe has taken over the former "Spuntino" location at the corner of Stafford and Grovenor. This is a great location for yet another casual bistro which will explain this place is so popular. This place is BUSY and it does not take reservations! Compounding that factor is that there is no real waiting area for you to stand or sit. So your best bets are to come here early which means 5 pm (when they open) on a Fri/Sat or drop by leave your name and then go somewhere else like the Grove for a drink and then come back.

We got here just after 5 pm on Saturday but by 530 pm it was completely full! The interior has been updated and looks very pretty and sophisticated yet still has a casual feel. The menu share a few of the dishes from the original Tre Visi but this place offers up pizza and a few new dishes. Prices are still very reasonable as pastas are around $16-$19 and secondis $21-$24.

I really like Tre Visi and Sensi so it was disappointing when my only take away from Tre Visi Cafe was how salty everything many of the dishes were! Maybe an off night? The complimentary foccacia which is usually delicious had an overkill of salt. This was then followed by the "farfalle tre visi" ($16) - spicy crumbled sausage tossed in tomato sauce. The spicy sausage was way too salty - this was disappointing as I love this dish at the main Tre Visi.

The Pollo Cacciatore ($21) - bone in chicken, mushrooms, peppers and papardelle was the opposite of the farfelle tre visi as it was quite bland. That being said the chicken was very tender and the papardelle was cooked perfectly.

Also tried their pizza which comes in one size and is more than enough for one a meal. There's 3 choices $12-$14. La Tre Visi ($13) - homemade Italian sausage, red peppers and onion. This sausage was perfectly seasoned. The pizza was pretty average - the pizza had good toppings, medium crust that was more chewy then crispy.

Service was friendly and efficient despite the busy nature of this place.

Conclusion: I don't like going for dinner at 5 pm and I like consistent food quality so for me, I still prefer making reservations and dining at the Tre Visi on McDermot.

Do you pine away over a particular food memory I’ll admit it-I do. Years ago D and I were invited to dinner and the theatre by life long friends. Since the original Tre Visi on McDermot Ave. is so close to The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, we could dine and walk to the theatre without having to repark our car. Even though parking rates aren’t anywhere near as exorbitant as other major Canadian Urban centres, you do not want park twice. The issue is not the money, it is the winter temperature in the middle of the Canadian prairie. On that night, D and I shared a bowl of gnocchi and truth be told, I have lusted over that taste, ever since. The newest Tre Visi location opened in my neighbourhood this past winter but even with my determination to get there, here it is almost summer and I have only now gotten the opportunity. When asked where I wanted to go for an early birthday lunch by two good friends, my response was right on the tip of my tongue! In anticipation of our autumn s
