Review Mon Ami Louis - Winnipeg

Excellent menu options. They also offer vegetarian and gluten free options. On the night we visited, service was s-l-o-w. We ordered the large charcuterie board which seemed skimpy compared to previous visits. Some food items were under-seasoned. Service was friendly and reasonably attentive.

Delicious food. Great service. Very beautiful and clean restaurant. All on top of their very affordable prices. The only downside is they do not have their own parking lot and you need to walk from the forks parking lot. Would 100% recommend so long as you don't mind a short walk to get there.

Cozy place, unique location, food is excellent and views are fabulous! My kids gave this place five stars. Our server Allan was very professional, "polite and fun" according to my kids. We received great food and service there. I will highly recommend this restaurant for couples or families. The place is very popular, make sure you have reservations during busy hours.

I've been to Mon Ami Louis a couple of times over the years and the experiences have always been positive. The predominantly French food has been decent, the service good, etc. If you get a good seat, there are beautiful views of the Red River below and the Human Rights Museum a short distance away. Parking is sometimes frustrating, but there is generally lots of space on the St. Boniface side of Provencher.

Stopped in to try something different for Sunday lunch. One of (if not the) first customers in for the day. Beautiful view of the river as expected. The service was top notch. We had the salmon August special with salad - excellent, tasty and well put together. We also had the Esplanade burger with duck fat fries - I will admit a bit of wariness with the fries, but they were really tasty! Burger was well put together. I'll be taking my summer out-of-town guests here.

Were were lucky to have come by after summer opening. This unique, seasonal, venue hangs out over the river with spectacular views all around. The French cuisine was exquisite and the wine list very tasty. It was a great way to celebrate the end of of troponin Winnipeg.

My wife and I loved this place. Everything was perfect. Delicious beet and pear salad, crepes were fantastic. Paul, our waiter was very attentive and helpful. The location speaks for itself. We didn’t have reservations early on Saturday evening but the hostess managed to get us a table anyway. So glad she did.

On Tues, August the 7th, I booked a table for 3 , at 6:30 pm, via the online booking option from their website. Special request was made to be seated next to the window,as we were bringing a friend from Vancouver with us, as part of our celebrating becoming Canadian Citizens the next day. It was a special evening for us all. When we arrived, we got the table I requested. Thank you for that. I understand that due to the uniqueness and layout of the restaurant, larger groups sometimes takes precedence to smaller groups, when it comes to allocating window seating. I respect that. Our evening turned out to be a most memorable experience. Thank you guys. The food was excellent, and everybody at the table were very impressed with the restaurant, the staff, the food, and especially our server. She was simply outstanding. I had the Spinach Salad , it was equisite. Shaved fennel, pears, feta cheese, toasted walnuts, dried cranberries, lemon basil vinaigrette, this dish was simply superb. As a main course I had Braised Beef Brisket, tender brisket in sauce with potato gratin and topped with crispy onions, carrots, mushrooms, and beets. This too was excellent. One of the highlights though, our server (sadly, I cant recall her name.) Again, her service was impeccable. Polite, friendly, confident and knowledgeable on what the restaurant offers. It takes a special skill for a server not to be around when you dont need her, but to be there when you do. It's a skill very few servers have, and that is to be aware of your surroundings, to be aware of what is happening at your guests table, and to anticipate when a need might arise. She was superb, please thank her for me.

I booked a table for my son’s 16th birthday, The service was phenomenal, the food was fantastic, all the staff passing by stopped and said happy birthday to my son, I totally recommend this place, wow I am so coming back

The food was wonderful, however, we won't be back as the service was quite poor: for example, a requested table change was denied (though the requested table was unoccupied for our whole time there); server interrupted conversations unnecessarily then was absent for considerable periods of time; server rushed with the bill after saying there was no rush; among others. There are many places to find great food in Winnipeg, so poor service needn't be tolerated.

Food was good, The waitress was clueless and kept screwing up our order. Over all worth a visit
Sandra Sukhan
Food was excellent and our server Christian was so very helpful with suggestions about what to eat! Great view was an added bonus. Closing on October 7 so hurry in!

Beautiful location on the bridge in the middle of the red river, good food but the drink and food menu are limited.

The staff here is gracious, helpful., and professional. I had the Louis burger and fries. Love the sauce on the burger. Smoky flavour, little spice with sweetness. We also had the regular poutine. Love the duck fat gravy. I would go back!
Sally Lipschitz
Love it, fabulous food, favourite Gnocci is back and delsih new menu items. Ahi tuna burger still the best ever.
Jacqueline Bohemier
The burger was awesome. Poutine great. My friends had other dishes and loved those also. The view of the city and river was really nice.

Our visit was disappointing. We arrived at the restaurant at 2pm on Monday May 21st there were only two tables filled, both with 2 people at 4seat tables. We were sat at a two seater with uncomfortable upholstered chairs. Other couples came in after us and were seated at tables for 4. Service and food were average. Would I go back? Only if someone visiting suggested that they’d like to go there.
Brian Hamric
The location is a wonderful and unique location hanging off the bridge over the Red River. Food is better than average and service is speedy and unobtrusive. Great place for a friends lunch!
Jeremy Roth
Seriously good! Been to places like this in the heart of a tourist area, and have been let down. Not this place! Food was amazing, great service & super cool over looking the river!
Michelle Pagé
Fine dining in such an unassuming package. Once in the view is amazing. Once served the food was sublime. Staff was very friendly and dessert put it over the top The kids already want us to bring them back for their birthdays.
Marie-Cécile Alvarez
Bon rapport qualité prix avec une belle vue sur la rivière. Délicieux de l'entrée au dessert. Good quality and not too expensive with a lovely view on the river. Really Tasty!
Jim Wolf
Great food. Burger is fantastic. Little bits of dill on the poutine gave it some great flavour. Servers were prompt and courteous. Going again sometime!

Tried it for the first time tonight. We will absolutely be returning! The food was fantastic, my daughter and I shared the brassiere poutine and the bison meatballs while my husband had the salmon. Our server (Tiara) was attentive without being intrusive and so patient with our young lady. CUDOS to the chef and staff!

Came here for Burger Week. Great atmosphere but food was ok. The burger we had was good but was a bit rich and lacking something. I’d be back but maybe for an alcoholic beverage.
Mon
the burger for burger week here take out.. i called for pickup the lady said 20 minute wait. I ended up taking my full lunch there to wait and waited 50 minutes for my burger!! So disappointing. The burger i don't think was beef..too much pork and too much seasoning on the bun that overpowered the taste of the overall burger. The burger was okay.. with the wait and service i wouldn't come again. The fries though were good..

Burger week is upon us and it seemed the time to finally participate! Four of us played the elimination game and narrowed it down to Mon Amie Louis about which I was delighted, having very much wanted to try this place. Their Sugar Shack burger has a delicious beef patty topped with maple sweet pulled pork, cheese, sweet potato chips, etc. The potato chips were lost among the other flavours and textures but the burger was, on the whole, quite delicious though the bun was thin so the juices came through the bottom and too wide in diameter as much of it surrounded instead of topped the burger.

Mon Amie Louis is run by a former instructor at the Red River College culinary school who was let go last year or so prior to opening the bridge restaurant. Yes, the reason is somewhat public and can be found. No, it will have nothing to do with your food or dining experience. The students from last year (many of whom are acquaintances) under his supervision thoroughly enjoyed his teaching and his passion and it is clear that he takes these with him to the restaurant. The reason I bring it up at all is to dissuade anyone from making assumptions as I have heard some do. The restaurant is run with professionalism and passion and you should go.

That being said, obviously parking is an issue and for those with limited mobility it is not a good option. The venue is, however, very nice and rather a treat. Service is prompt and good. The menu is limited but everything is done with care and everything each of my party members ate was deemed delicious. One friend said she would drive the half hour each time just for their duck gravy poutine so you can assume it was delightful. She enjoyed it so well she forgot to offer her husband any.

At the end of the evening, I can say I would certainly go back and I look forward to trying other things on the menu.

Beautiful location, decent prices, and "okay" food. Both times we were here, the service was a little slow, despite not being incredibly busy. It will not be a place that'll make it into our regular-visits list.

Nice place! The people seemed a bit surprised when we walked in off the street for a bite. Had the crepes benedict which I thoroughly enjoyed. The view certainly helps things.

A disappointment. We arrived as the only customers, yet the person greeting us seemed confused and anxious about where to seat us. He kept saying "one minute, one minute" as he grew more and more flustered, seemed to be looking for some papers - I think maybe there were some reservations but he couldn't find where they were noted. We were finally seated when he found his papers, and oddly after all that he asked us where we wanted to sit!

Hubby ordered the special of the day: pickerel and chips, I ordered the crepe crock Monsieur and poutine to share with the kiddo. I was excited to read that the fries were cooked with duck fat (have enjoyed this preparation of frits in Europe before). Food arrived beautifully plated, though for over $15 my crepe was underwhelmingly small and middle of the road taste wise. Poutine was a disappointment: had an unpleasant burnt oil taste. At also over $15, I had expected something stellar that would remind me of being back in Belgium, not soggy burnt tasting fries. Hubby's pickerel was nice, but unsurprisingly his fries also tasted of burnt frying oil.

For poutine, a crepe and fish and chips to come to $50, it needs to be perfectly executed, and it was far from it. Kawaii Crepe has better crepes by far and for practically half the price, poutine anywhere is better and less costly. Hubby and I agreed we'd have been better to get take-out food at the Forks and sit alongside the river.

Fantastic view except for a woman swimming half naked in the river while dining. We both ordered for the Poulet Le'orange with roasted asparagus and parnips in a bed of basmati rice and was good but nothing to rave about. Fast friendly service. The place still has the touch of Sal's restaurant with the subway tiles and red accent. Parking is obviuosly a challenge.

Went to Mon Ami Louis on Thursday May 12 with friends to celebrate a birthday. I must say we all left very underwhelmed by the space, the food and the staff.

First, the space. Still feels like Sal's, right down to the red neon string lights running up the ceiling. If it's bistro atmosphere they are looking for, a major overhaul is in need. Wide open and sparse is how I'd describe it. Nothing to lead the guests to think they are in for any kind of French inspired dining. Oh yeah, for the prices, drop the paper napkin wrapped flatware and green paper tape wrappers. If you want to elevate, start with a proper set of table linens...

Second, staff. Our server was very over attentive. It seemed any time that a decent conversation started at the table, there they were to interrupt with inane questions that if she was watching the table, she'd know what to do, silently and unobtrusively. No real table side romance as the foodie shows like to call it. She had nothing totally add to our dining experience. Right to the bitter end too, if you include the "So, I'm getting off my shift now. This will be your server for the end of your service" as she presented us with our improperly split bills. That's the usual hint that, " My shift's over and I'd really like to go home with my tip" Poor form!

Third, and most disappointing, the food.
Our dining partners had the duck wing appetizer, which apparently was nice, although I didn't try them. We had a salad appetizer to split that I can't really complain about, but most telling us that I've totally forgotten what kind of salad it was... My wife had a flatbread pizza that was "OK". Two of us had the bison meatballs with pasta. The plate itself was pretty uninspired presentation-wise. Not a lot of sauce on the pasta, actually the 2 plates looked different in terms of food amounts and plating. Anyway, of course when the server came before any of us had had a chance to try our first notes to ask, "So, how are the first few bites"? I was growing annoyed. This girl should have a clue about when and how to pose those questions and surveying the table before opening her mouth. Anyway, she came back in a couple minutes because, well, her question wasn't answered the first time. Too bad. Our meatballs were almost icy in the middle. They were sent back to be redone.
The refute was ok, and I do have to say, they remade the plates and all was hot. Unfortunately, the other two guests were done their meals by the time we got our retired mains. Worth the wait? Not really. Hot, but the meatballs themselves were too dense and over ground. The texture was too smooth. Sauce was so so, kinda bland and not enough. The pasta, I think it was home made, but for a garlic pasta, I couldn't taste or smell any.

Sorry Mon Ami Louis, even after comping us the 2 cold entrees, I will not be back. There are too many good new restaurants in Winnipeg to chance another bad meal at a repeat restaurant. WOW! You've got a project cut out for yourself with this place.

we had a late lunch (4 of us) on opening day, April 26th, 2016. none of us had ever been to the bridge restaurant and we enjoyed the minimal decor & huge windows. obviously there were minor glitches as it was OPENING day, but we did enjoy our meal. we had a celiac in our midst, the menu didnt have a very many items with GF beside the small menu listing, however, there were certainly things that could be altered, like the salads which in and of themselves seemed GF anyway. we started with the duck wings which really had a great sauce. the two salads that were tried were good but nothing spectacular; one came without dressing and obvious opening day miss. 2 different Tarte Flambee's were ordered, lunch portion was certainly plenty as a meal for one person: the Forestiere was ordered with bacon added and needed to stay in the oven a few more minutes to crisp up the crust (hot sauce was requested and added as it just seemed a bit bland), also a salmon & caper one was ordered and enjoyed. they had corn soup as their daily, that you should order. the soup tasted like grandma made it and it was GF.

The bun was amazing, moist on the outside and crispy inside. The burger was excellent with a serious thick crust. Its flavour was top notch - juicy and lightly seasoned. BBQ sauce made the burger.

The food was delicious here, I will say that. I had the Brie appetizer and the gnocchi and it tasted great. My one complaint is the portion sizes. When I first saw the prices in had thought "wow these seem very reasonable!" When I got my food I saw why they were lower... They weren't that big. The appetizer was a small wedge, I really wish there was more. The gnocchi, while delicious was also a small portion size. I left feeling hungry still. I think the only person who had leftovers was the one who ordered flatbread so that seems like it would be a good filling meal at a very reasonable price! I would rather pay a bit more and get more food on my plate personally!

Great French place to go in Winnipeg. I haven't tried many french places...or any really. There isn't a lot of variety in Winnipeg for this type of cuisine.
I love the area. Beautiful walk there and a nice gelato place on the other side of the bridge for dessert :)
We tried the duck wings, flat bread pizza, brie, spinach almond salad, poutine and salmon.
The spinach salad was to die for! Also it filled me up, which is weird for me. It takes a lot of food to fill me up.
Poutine was delicious, made with duck gravy.
Pizza was good but I've had better. Im used to greasy cheesy pizza, but this flat bread is a healthier option.
Duck wings were meaty and yummy and messy.
Brie is always delicious. Fresh bread with it and lovely fruit mixture to go on top of the brie.

It is quite pricey. This is more of a fancy, special occasion place to go to on a night out. We dress up but there are people who do not.
Dinner for 3 people was about 100$.

Still love to go here on a special night out for french food :)

It was a beautiful sunny afternoon and we thought we'd give this place a try because of its view. It definitely did not disappoint. The service was fantastic, The view was beautiful and the food was amazing. I had the pulled pork poutine, I'm a huge fan of poutine and this was the best I've ever had. My sister had the traditional pizza, she also stated it was the best pizza that she's ever had. This is my new favorite restaurant, I will definitely be going back.

The Swizzle Styx dined here today and we loved it! We had been here before when it was both the Sals and Chez Sophie so we were aware of the beautiful decor and wonderful views. The service did not disappoint, our server was efficient and friendly. The food was fantastic! We found the portions to be more than enough and definitely left full and happy. We had the brie cheese appetizer and then the burger, the Mediterranean tarte flambee, gnocchi and pulled pork poutine. Everything was very flavourful and the experience was top notch.

Been wanting to check this place out for a while and finally came with a friend for a late lunch. We shared the spinach salad with lemon dressing and the pulled pork poutine. The salad was good but the poutine came out cool and fries tasted old like they'd been sitting out for a while, which was odd considering we were the only customers. Also the mojito we ordered came without mint (they ran out) it would have been nice to know before ordering it however they gladly took it off the bill which was nice. Service wasn't great, water was never refilled and after receiving our food we weren't asked how anything was or acknowledged until we were finished, which she brought our bill before we were ready. I've heard many people have good experiences here so maybe our timing was off, might come back for dinner one time.

I ordered the braised beef shoulder which came with pasta, tomatoes, olives and mashed squash. I am a small eater and almost always take home half my meal. Despite the fact that I didn't really like my meal, I ate the entire thing and was hungry an hour later. There was very little actual beef and a lot of olives, but they were the very salty kind that I found overpowering. The dish itself was extremely greasy and gave me heartburn. What there was of the squash was tasty. What I did enjoy about my meal was the service, the location and the view, but despite that, I would hesitate to go back here.

Pros: Gorgeous interior and view and super flavourful gnocchi (although slightly different than what I've had at other restaurants).

Cons: To me, the portions are kind of small for the price. But not so much so that it would deter me from going back altogether.
HonestEater
Pretty good fig jam pizza. Was satisfied with their portions. I like that the hours here are pretty late. Would come back to try more on their menu.

Mon Ami Louis combines a beautiful location with decidedly Parisean Fare to create a fun and whimsical dining experience on the banks of the Esplanade Riel. Similarly, the food is wonderfully crafted full of strong contrasting flavours and, despite a few small errors in execution, a exemplary rendition of French cuisine.

My husband and I did take out this weekend; we ordered the 'Fat Louis' for 'Le Burger week' and boy were we glad! After a quick walk up the bridge from the east-side, we found oursleves in the lovely restaurant staring out at the spectacular views. I must say that I've never visited any of the previous restaurants occupying the space, so this was my first time. We took the burgers to go, and they ended up being our 3rd place of the 8 burgers we tried that week. The flavour was spectacular, and combined with the atmosphere and view, I think we will be back (perhaps with out of town guests), to eat in at some point... although probably not until next spring or summer. :)

The food here is AMAZING! I cannot wait to come back. The only downside was the noise level, though they don't call themselves a fine dinning restaurant and the open concept doesn't help the noise level.

I attended Mon Ami Louis on Friday evening with 3 friends and we were not impressed, especially seeing as how it's under the WOW Hospitality umbrella.

We arrived 5 minutes before our reservation, there was no hostess to seat us and no one said anything to us for about 10 min... It was about half full and no one said " we will be right with you" or anything at all. When someone did come, she sat us in the back, when we had requested a table by the window. There were 4 open tables by the window but we were told they were taken... They didn't look taken at the time but we said whatever, no big deal.

Our server came by, introduced herself and took our drink order. One of our group asked for a glass of white wine on the wine list, and was told they didn't have it. She then asked for another 2 wines on the wine list and they didn't have those either. She finally said "well, what do you have available" the server wasn't sure so she went and asked. She came back and told our guest what was available and then she choose a wine. Our drinks took about 20min to get to our table. We didn't even have water, so that was a disappointment.

We ordered our food and this was the only bright point of the evening. All the dishes we received were prepared and presented well and tasted good. In our opinion, it's the only positive aspect. If I was reviewing just the food, it would be a 4 out of 5, but it's the entire experience that provides the memories.

The decor was dated and I felt like I was still sitting in a Salisbury House. Red booths, red neon lighting on the ceiling, etc. A little paint and effort could go a long way in this space.

At one point of the night, the bartender started to attempt to flip cups into the air and try to catch them with another cup, with not much success. it was just unprofessional and tacky, not what I want from this style of restaurant.

I will not be back.

None of us will be.

The WOW group should looking into the operations here if they want it to live up to the WOW Hospitality caliber.
DineoutGal
This is the third restaurant attempt on the Esplanade Bridge after Salisbury House and Chez Sophie. Mon Ami Louis is operated by Wow Hospitality and will be open from May to September. It will host special events, like weddings, in the fall and winter. This place opened on July 22, 2015 with just a temporary banner as its signage and with a very similar decor inside since Chez Sophie though they did add a bar.

I have to say the first disappointment is not being able to find an online menu. There was nothing on Wow's website or Mon Ami Louis' Facebook page. So I called and asked the hostess and she said "yeah, lots of people are saying the same thing but I've been told it's on there but I guess it's not." How hard is it to load a menu online? I snapped a few pics so you can check out the menu. The hostess was kind enough to describe the menu to me over the phone.

The menu is priced reasonably and offers something for everyone. Appetizers $7-$10, Soups and salads $6-$7. A variety of poutines $6-$14, tarte flambee ($14-$15), crepes $12-$15, 4 entrees $12-$19 (salmon, chicken, beef shoulder and gnocchi) and sandwiches $11-$12. Their specialty is the tarte flambee which is described as a French version of a pizza it's a flat bread from the Alsatian region. This pizza can be shared with a few people as a starter or a meal for one. I really enjoyed the Mediterranean ($14) which had basil pesto, artichoke hearts, grape tomatoes and feta cheese and arugula on top. The crust is super thin and crispy and the ingredients were all very fresh. I would order this again. I had the salmon ($19) - baked atlantic salmon with green beans almandine, squash puree, gnocchi and citrus peppercorn butter. For the price of the entrees don't expect the protein portions to be large. The entree is fine for a small to medium appetite. Make sure you order a starter if you are hungry. The salmon was cooked well done, I prefer medium but this was still fine as it wasn't dry. The gnocchi is pan fried, good but not light and fluffy. The green beans and squash puree were executed perfectly. Overall, a pretty good dish that I'd order again. I took a bite of the chicken paillard ($15) that my husband ordered - it was with sauteed potatoes, asparagus and a mushroom sauce. The chicken was good, maybe a touch on the salty side which seemed to be from the overly reduced sauce. But otherwise, good dish.

Also tried the house made lemon meringue pie ($7), it's a mini sized pie for one with a not very tarte lemon filling. The meringue was piped on like little decorative flowers which is disappointing as I like a huge layer of meringue on top of the pie.

The mixed drinks were disappointing. The French 75 did not taste like a proper one and barely had any fizz from the prosecco. The other drinks at the table were also pretty dismal - felt like the bartender didn't know how to make the drinks.

Food service was a tad slow but they were very busy on Friday with a full house. Our server was pretty attentive and knowledgeable about the dishes.

Despite a few misses, which I think they can easily correct, I still came away liking the place and hope it does well. I'd go back for a lunch or casual dinner.

Keeping things simple seems to be the key at Mon Ami Louis and it works! I heard rave reviews about their tartes flambées (pizzas) before going there so I tried the Mediterranean tarte flambée which was very tasty. Artichoke, feta, pesto on a thin crust, you can't go wrong. It was large portion for a reasonable price. Service was excellent all around.

This new Winnipeg restaurant is on the foot bridge beside the Provencher Bridge. Four (4) of us tried it to-day and found the food and service excellent, however, the décor is very plain. It looks most like a plain cafeteria. Our server Faye, captivated us with her bubbly personality, excellent knowledge of the menu, with spot-on recommendations and superior service. The entrées were spectacular in taste and appearance however, portion sizes were relatively small leaving anyone with a hearty appetite feeling let down if they didn't order an appetizer. Definitely a welcome addition to Winnipeg that gets you out walking both before and after an excellant meal.

Great experience and good value. Service was prompt and knowledgable. Food was fresh and flavourful. Wine list is decent with numerous options by the glass. Will be back.

This restaurant is new, having just launched within the last month. Service was excellent and attentive. The food was delicious and scratch made. I was not disappointed and I look forward to eating there again. The brisket burger added a different dimension to the usual ground beef. The fries done in duck fat were crunch and delicious but not everyone will like the shoestring fries. I wish them all the best and hope they can make a go of it as this is a tough location and surviving the winter months always proves a challenge for tenants on the Esplanade Riel.
