Bistro food at Haute Cuisine prices. I've been there many times over the years. The menu is straightforward and offers typical fare that covers all the main areas of France. The desserts are excellent. The chef is a formally trained pastry chef and it shows. His tarte tatin is fabulous. I'm always surprised by the relatively basic wine list. The service is attentive but it's not in the same league as a typical French restaurant. That said, for a genuine Bistro experience in the area, this is it.
I visited the restaurant with my classmates in April. The food doesn't look very good, but once you dig in it's great. The split pea soup was good and chunky, and the sole was absolutely delicious. The chocolate crepes were also good, but kind of inconvenient to eat. We didn't get a knife, so we are with fingers and forks. The dessert could use a touch more sugar. Overall, a great experience and good service. Michel, the chef is very kind and welcoming. Le Vol Au Vent is a great place to take your family, as long as they aren't too picky eaters.

We love everything about Le Vol au Vent, its site on the White Rock water-front, its excellent chef and his charming hostess/wife, and especially for its food. We came off a flight from Toronto on Sunday evening, September 6th, and headed straight for LVaV. Luckily we snagged the last available table for that time slot. We started of sharing a marrow-bone appetizer, a reminder of the dish my mother used to cook in Dublin. My husband had cervelles/brains as his main course. They were sizzling hot, cooked to perfection and delicious. I had the wild salmon, it came straight from the pan, under-cooked to the desired degree of silky rareness that I prefer, and enhanced with some of Michel's secret and subtle seasonings. For dessert we shared a lovely tarte tatin that ushers in the "season of mists and mellow fruitfulness" that is Autumn. All was perfection. We left for a long line-up at the border, our spirits further lifted by CBC Radio One's broadcast of the Bob Dylan Basement Tapes, a fitting musical coda to a lovely evening, thanks to the beautiful meal, dedicated, hard-working restaurateurs, the pale pink sunset. The only jarring part of the experience was the open coal, chemicals and goods train passing on the rail-way tracks across the road, right beside the water.
