I enjoyed every single bite of the food I had here. The food was wonderful, the ambience was wonderful, the service was wonderful. I’d love to come back here more often if only it weren’t that pricey.
• place is just OK
• nothing so special about their dishes
• moderately priced
• good service
• good place for a quiet date I suppose
• street parking
This place is a bit hidden. If it wasn't Dine Out, I never would have trekked out this far. Not the most attractive entrance, you would mistaken it for any other typical Japanese restaurant. But once you got past the front door, the interior gives off a completely different dining experience.
Having attended Dine Out last night at Bistro Sakana (which was a very underwhelming experience), we were hoping this wasnt just another 'wanna be posh' Japanese restaurant. Have to say, although it lacks the hip and busy vibe of Yaletown/Downtown district, the food is nicely executed. It's no fine dining like Miku but nevertheless, points of a nice ambience, great seating and food is fresh and a decently portioned.
Appetizers of fried lobster roll, a generous plating of coleslaw mixture wrapped in rice wrapper, topped with a lobster tempura and occupied by a mayo mixture. Plating was kind of funny...kind of like Tic Tac Toe XD.
Other appetizer of fried scallop and crab cake (4 pcs total) was plated with diced beets, cucumbers and bit of micro greens. I thought the amount of mayo mixture underneath was ridiciously overwhelming..but my brother managed to scoffed most of it down.
Entree was 9 pc nigiri sushi, very fresh and presented beautifully. The fish was not paper thin but reasonable in thickness. This is priced at $29 on their menu so this would be worthwhile to try rather than ala carte. The other entree, miso sea bass, had "wok hey"...a nice smokiness to the overall fish and underlaying bed of asian vegetables.
The dessert, warm brownie with ice cream or matcha tart, both equally delicious and very simply executed and not too sweet..the brownie was melt in your mouth texture...only criticism was both desserts lacked embellisments.
Besides the great food with generous portions, the service was great even with full house. The waitresses were all brisk with service but very courteous.
We actually can't wait for summer to roll in so we can try this place...the ceiling to floor windows and patio seating is definitely a plus. But we will be coming back way before summer hits.

Best sushi in the Vancouver area by far. Tojo's has nothing on this. 'Nuff said. See for yourself. I can close my eyes and randomly point to anything on the menu and be contemplating getting seconds. I chew till the sushi disintegrates in my mouth because I never want it to end.
Great food, Fabulous Location!. We dined on the patio a couple of times this summer. The food was superb, the service was great. Keep your eyes and ears open for Groupon type of offers. Especially if you live on the North Shore, its easy to get too, and there is ample parking around the back.
Keep it simple and it's worth the price.. Our appetizers were not that appetizing but the nigiri and a simple salmon/avocado roll were extremely fresh. Toro had that melt in your mouth texture without being chewy or rubbery. Outstanding. Sake list is decent but pricey. Asahi on tap is the way to go. We went for a late lunch so service was attentive. We were already in West Vancouver so it was convenient and since it's down the road a bit from all the shops it's much easier to park.
BEST OF VANCOUVER. The best sushi I have ever had, 'nough said.Very fresh and amazing service.
Good food and great service. The server's recommendation were spot-on for the most part. The popcorn shrimp roll is a must try as well as the ebi blossoms (tapas). I didn't like the millennium roll as much. Sit on the patio! Overall we had a great experience!
You are definitely paying a premium for food here. Don't bother trying the normal menu, as you are just paying a premium for items that you can get anywhere else. Very creative rolls, with the Speckled Scallop Roll being especially delicious.
Hands down - the best Japanese in Vancouver. Always creative, always changing, the food is nothing short of outstanding. Modern Japanese created by a highly skilled chef, Zen transcends the obvious and never disappoints.
Love the food here...very unique though overpriced sushi...but of course we are in West Vancouver. I would definatly eat here again as the ingredience used to making there creation's are top notch
Excellent Sushi. This is my favourite Japanese sushi restaurant. Wonderful fusion rolls, serene ambiance and impeccable service.
Our friend of ours wanted to dine at Zen, so the four of us went to West Van to try out the place. It was a warm summer evening, so we sat out in the patio. A bit higher end than your typical sushi place, we were looking forward to indulge in some fine dining. The water took forever to come out and our thirst seemed worse since we had been outside for most of the day prior to the dinner. When they did come, but glass was all scratched up like crazy as if it went through the garburator. It wasn’t dirty, but it wasn’t nice to drink out of, especially at a fine restaurant like this. My friend asked ‘what the heck happened to your glass?’ Their own custom branded plates and bowls! The napkin was folded in a neat way that kept us busy trying to figure out the folds. Negitoro $6.50! The negitoro was an expensive $6.50 but I didn’t notice anything superior to any rolls for half the price at other places. It wasn’t as flavourful and the nori (seaweed) was really chewy. It didn’t
