Review I Kyu Noodles - Victoria

Caelsob
Really good Shanghai noodles with ground pork I mean really good noodles. I mean really good broth I mean really good noodles and broth I mean all of it was good. I mean the vegetables were good as well I mean the broth was good I mean I really enjoyed that bowl of soup. Oh my gosh that was a really good bowl of soup. Spring rolls were crispy and served piping hot, just how I like it. Need to try more of this menu.

First time here. Looks like a hole in the wall, which is often a good thing. Had the BBQ Pork Wonton soup. Decent flavour and a good size portion. Next time I’ll ask for a bit of chili sauce on the side to mix in and give it a kick. Also liked that the tea is included as part of your meal. Need to come back again and try their other dishes.

I love this little gem in town, I can get my favorite childhood dish, the pork belly and rice and for full experience I added a soy sauce cooked egg. Very simple and so yummy like the place itself, simple decoration, friendly staff, daily specials. What is outstanding about this place is that they make everything from scratch, dumplings, noodles, the broth is unique too, that means to me that these chefs are really in love with what they offer. And that love shines through in the food, delicate, delicious. I’m grateful they are around, I’m definitely gonna come back and try more.

Travel in Victoria, That’s the best Mandarin style noodle house I have! Much better than same style restaurants in Vancouver . Love it ! Will be back!

Amazing noodle house in Victoria Chinatown. Service is quick and efficient & servers were extremely nice Got the Beef Brisket Wonton/Dumpling noodle soup. Portions are very generous for the price, noodles and broth was very tasty! Will definitely recommend 👍

The food at this restaurant is more authentic than other Asian fusion restaurants. My husband ordered the kim chi vegetarian noodle. It was quite tasty. I ordered hot noodle with sesame paste. Delicious. The cucumber cold dish is quite delicious too. Hope they can develop more vegetarian friendly dishes in the future. Very friendly service for a quick and emotionally fulfilling lunch.

The freaking BEST wonton soup - not to mention the tea that comes with it is awesome. Wor wt soup hits so hard it’s just delicious from start to finish. If you’re extra hungry I suggest getting it with noodles. Cool little aquarium and the staff is very nice.

It's a cramped little place (it was lunchtime), but my sister and I enjoyed it. We didn't have to wait long for our food and service was great. The prices were good, too 👍🏾. I would recommend this restaurant 😋.

The Wor Wonton was delicious. Hands down the best I've ever had. Nice and clean place to eat and the waitress was a gem too! If you are ever in the area be sure to stop by and enjoy! Greetings from the USA!

Brisket noodle dish was delicious. Wonton soup also good. Ask for chili sauce to spice it up. Came back for the wonton soup it was also good. Service a bit slower however.

This place is so good. This time I had the Dan Dan noodles. Perfect level of spicy and the noodles the right amount of chewy. Friend got some 🦆 thing. Was awesome.
Caroline Therrien
AMAZING. I ordered the veggie ramen (in photo) and my mom got teriyaki chicken noodle soup (can’t remember my dads order). All soups were very tasty
Betty Xing
Friendly staff and authentic food. Really like the assorted marinate meat combo!

Spicy noodle salad with prawns is my absolute favourite meal at I Kyu.

Best place in victoria for noodles. Coconut chicken is the bomb!

My wife affectionately refers to this place as her "favourite noodle place". I believe all the noodles are homemade and they also sell them to cook with. The spicy shanghai wontons are incredible, spicy and soft with a lot of kick and excellent flavour. Dan dan mein is quite good with great seasoned meat. I must admit I have been looking for great tan tan / dan dan in Victoria to compare to some I had in Vancouver and while I haven't yet found it, I must say that I Kyu gives it a tasteful interpretation and I would order it again. The ramen is somewhat plain but they do not especially specialize in ramen. I am saddened to see that they have received a number of negative reviews critical of the flavour, I wonder if they tended to order milder dishes (which I have not tried) or if I've been lucky with menu choices, or if their palate did not mesh well with some of the seasoning choices. I find that there is a subtle pepperiness to everything which I quite enjoy, along with a hint of chili oil, reminding me of dishes from a couple Vancouver sichuan restaurants. This place is also odd, it has a relatively small menu but the dishes are definitely not cookie-cutter Chinese food. I must say that the guy who runs the place is very friendly and the one young girl who tends to be on staff as a server is very hard-working. It's a nice little place to stop in, rarely too busy, and I have been here a couple times over the span of my time in Victoria. I hope the best for htem.

Terrible. How does this place get such great reviews? Finally ordered based on several recommendations and seeing decent reviews. I ordered the chicken coconut noodle soup and my wife ordered udon noodle with beef soup. Got it home and immediately thought it didn't look very good. And we weren't wrong. I had barely any broth and terrible mushy over cooked spaghetti-like noodles, barely any chicken, canned corn and almost no flavour. My wife's broth was weak and tasteless and she had only 3 tiny slices of beef. Broccoli in both was very over cooked, also mushy. Spring rolls were passable but deep frying covers up a lot. Immediately both of us were scouring our fridge for something, anything to add flavour. Fish Sauce, soy sauce, pepper... Good grief. This was just plain BAD. And I had to convince my wife to try it rather than some proven noodle places in town. Now I'll never hear the end of it! Avoid this place, they've obviously gone down hill or are too inconsistent to trust.

China town spot, with various generally Asian menu items. Ramen, kimchi, soup dumplings, egg rolls. Standard Chinatown service and low prices, but a good value. Not the best ramen I've ever had, but it works.
Facebook User
Totally tasteless. The boys got pot stickers and liked it. I got coconut chicken soup and not sure I ate anything. There was no flavor. Totally disappointed in vacation dinner. Wish we'd gone to McDonalds...
Mik3
Very good hand made noodles. Every bite is al dente.

One of the best ramen in town! The broth is an elixir of flavors.

My favourite is the spicy shrimp noodle salad though.

We did take out from this place because we wanted a quick bite and the sign on the outside of the shop said that they have handmade noodles! We got 2 appetizers: an order of gyoza (6 pieces) and an order of the spicy shrimp and pork wonton (8 pieces on a bed of bean sprouts). They said it would take 13 minutes to prep the order and sure enough, 12 minutes later, we walked out with our order. The dumplings were delicious. The gyoza were incredibly juicy inside (eat them whole because otherwise the juice will squirt out and escape - a waste!). The spicy wonton had a nice kick and complemented the bean sprouts well.

Good (not Great) Food. The restaurant is a bit Frankenstein looking and they are always playing the same music video (Diana Krall) but the soups are good and portions are a good size. I frequent this restaurant at least once a week.

Wonderful won ton. Very good noodles and won tons. Small space but service is good. Don't mind the dated decor, the food is always good.

Juicy pan fried Gyoza.

I like it. Healthy Food(no msg). Good customer service. Decent Price. I Would definitely go back again.

Liked the noodles, but you guys should work on the smell... I had spicy & sour noodles and miso ramen there. liked the noodles, but the moment I walked in, I just couldn't help thinking 'what is this smell.....?' and felt a bit uncomfortable with that. It's almost like I was enjoying food in the bathroom. Maybe I'd better order for take-out next time.

Healthy Asian Food - no msg, best oils, talented and entertaining chef. When Carlos (no this is not an Italian restaurant) brings his charm into the front of the restaurant, you learn about his homemade fresh noodles. You learn about his family rejection of msg and overly oiled food. He loves to say with a wink, I only make 20 things because I am lazy, but then quickly clarifies that he likes to make 20+ really great things, rather than offering 200+ that cannot all be great. Found the restaurant by fluke through a fabulous tour through Chinatown. If ever there was a health food/or natural food version of Chinese food, I KYU is it. Cannot wait to try the homemade ginger dressing/dipping sauce I brought home. And did I mention the sample of homemade kimchi?

Lunch. Great for lunch. not a huge selection but fast friendly service

This restaurant was delicious. And filthy. If you are nervous about cleanliness, don't eat here, but the food was totally worth the less that desirable ambiance. I had coconut chicken ramen and my boyfriend had miso ramen. Both excellent but such huge portions we could have shared one.
Jenny S
It was not a good choice for a special meal. The door doesn't close and blew cold air on us every time someone came in or out. The tables were never cleared once people left. The ramen was good but the whole experience was poor.

Best restaurant in Chinatown BY FAR. I've been coming to I Kyu Noodles for a couple years now, and have yet to be disappointed. Hand-made noodles, exceptional flavors, fresh ingredients and a chef who loves to come out and have a chat every now and then.. how can you go wrong?
The Spicy Shrimp Noodle Salad (my husband refuses to order anything else - he's been going through withdrawals ever since we moved away) is packed full of fresh veggies, juicy shrimp and a spicy sauce that is to die for, and leaves you feeling wonderfully satisfied and thinking about when you're going to be hungry next so that you can come have some more.
The Coconut Shrimp Noodle, being my personal favorite, is so light and yet ridiculously tasty. I could just drink the broth on its own. (aaaand I do..)

Please don't miss an opportunity to try this place, you won't regret it.

YUMTASTIC!!!. I kept hearing about how good this place is so my boyfriend and | went for lunch. Great service! We had the dishes our server recommended as the popular items.

Coconut Chicken Soup was SO flavorful and not heavy/thick like some coconut dishes can be.
Dan Dan was also kick ass. The texture and flavor of the fresh noodles is wonderful.

I eat healthy and my boyfriend does not. This was a great place for both of us to have delicious food.

I will be going back again for sure!
Kdoris
Amazingly delicious!. Just drop by and try it! It will never disappoint you!

It is easy to overlook this place due to the small signage and décor in need of an update. But it is right in Chinatown and they are the best noodles in town. Fabulous, soulful food at a great price and they are open for dinner now too. Service was very polite and helpful. I must go back to try more of their menu.

Great cheap eats! We got th.... Great cheap eats!
We got the chicken coconut and the miso ramen and followed with fried banana. Delicious! The chef came out to check on us and the service was great.

Happily Surprised!. Last night I enjoyed wonderful service and great food at I Kyu Noodles. We were made to feel at home by the owner, Carlos, who was happy to share conversation and laughs with remaining guests after closing. I had the Ramen Noodle Soup and Juicy Pork Dumplings, the food was fresh and bursting with flavour. The noodles are made on the premises which makes a big difference to the flavour of the dishes they are included in. I look forward to eating here again, and will recommend it to friends and family!

While in town for work, I Kyu Noodles felt like my own personal kitchen. The chef made me the most delicious authentic chinese meals and entertained me with his outgoing and fun personality. His homemade noodles are by far the best I've ever had and definitely bring to mind the noodle houses of Asia, with a modern Canadian flair (try the Spicy Chicken Salad). You should eat here!

Not so impress. Wanted to try I Kyu noodles for a long time because of its good reputation. Noodles were hand made daily, which I really like as I like to support owners who work extra miles to impress their customers. I had the house special, Shanghai noodle soup, and had really good hand made noodles and soup base that fits my taste buds. However, it was the decor and the cleanliness of the restaurant that caught my eyes. When I walked in, there were large pieces of trash right in the middle of the entry way. As of East Asian background, I know dirty eateries and Chinatown go hand in hand, but at least show some bits of effort to tidy up a bit, especially there were no customers as I was the first one to walk in.

I do like HK style breakfast that they offer from 7am to 11am everyday. Also, no other restaurant (so far in Victoria) offers HK style breakfast, so I am eager to go back to try HK style breakfast. If the HK style breakfast is good and worth going back, I guess I would just have to ignore the decor and the cleanliness of the place.

It's a nice addition to Chinatown. The service was excellent, the noodles delicious, but ambiance gets a zero. Part of a good dining experience is made by enjoying the environment. I felt dirty to be in there. Everything was outdated. Even if you can't afford to revamp the place, at least make it sparkly clean or something. There was no music, just sitting in a dark dingy place.

As for the food, the noodles were very tasty. I enjoyed my ramen noodles very much. I thought the veggies looked a bit old though. The coconut shrimp noodles were good too, but the portion was a little small, especially the amount of shrimp.

Would I recommend this place? Probably not. I'd mention it if someone wanted a noodle place, but I can get homemade noodles at John's Noodle. If I felt like hot noodle soup, although it's not the same thing, there are plenty of Vietnamese pho places nearby that are cheaper, such as Green Leaf Bistro.
Iknot
Best Won Ton Noodles in Town. This little "hole-in-the-wall" restaurant has the best Won Ton Noodles and Broth in town. Have been a customer since its opening and food has been consistently excellent both in taste and costs. Owner, chief, and noodle master, Carlos is always friendly and quick with a reply. Meals are cooked when you order but the wait is worthwhile. Recently added to the menu is "deep fried bananas". Definitely worth a try. You won't be disappointed.

Chef is a wizard.. I went into I Kyu on a rainy day a couple weeks ago, with very few expectations save one: noodles. That is because the sign clearly said NOODLES.

What I wasn't expecting was in-house hand-made noodles. You mean they can actually make noodles in a kitchen from ingredients? Fan-frikking-tastic. I learned afterwards that I Kyu supplies Noodle Box with noodles, which is interesting since the ONLY thing I like about Noodle Box is the noodles.

I ordered the Shanghai noodle bowl and added a little bit of house-made hot sauce.

THAT HOT SAUCE. WTF. I didn't know hot sauce could kick your ass and have interesting flavours at the same time. I was in happy-tears by the end. All the components of the meal combined really nicely, left me with warm feelings, and only cost me $10.

Go there!

Unimpressed. I ate here last Friday. After entering we were promptly seat near the back, and all seemed quite normal for a small place such as this. That was, however, until our meals arrived. I had ordered the Stir-Fry Udon, and my father in-law and Wife had the Shrimp Udon. My meal looked fine, until I had my first bite. It seemed that the chef had forgotten to clean the grill before preparing my meal, and all I could taste for the duration of my lunch was the burnt grill bits that littered my plate. Upon asking my family how their meal was, they replied with "The noodles are nice, but the broth is utterly tasteless". Quite unfortunate, after reading all of the good reviews here, I expected much more. We will not be going back.

So good. I've been eating here for 2 years now. It's like that movie kung too panda! And I will never go to noodle box ever again because this is so much better!

The chow mein, udon noodle stir fry and miso ramen are my go to.

THE BEST!

Miso Rameyon. Consistancy. Over 2 years and it is still made the same way. Great soup base with NO msg. Delicious chewy noodles. Rameyon has ground pork, an egg and corn for some added sweetness. To me, this is their signature dish.
Garry
Wonderful place. This place only does noodles and dumplings but does them good. The noodles tasted fresh and the broth of the ramen was delicious. Will definitely go again.

Wonderful food and services! Definitely coming back for second, third, forth time!

Noodle making has become a lost art in our ever increasing processed food world, in which convenience has replaced craft. For this reason alone, I give thumbs up to Kyu for keeping the tradition alive. I'd take the worst hand-made noodle over the best factory-generated varietal any day of the week. Having said this, Kyu's noodles aren't the best in town. I still think JJ Wonton makes the best noodle soup. Kyu's wonton noodle soup is, nonetheless, delicious, but stay clear of their miso ramen, the broth of which I found sickly sweet, just terrible. Another example of why Chinese restaurants should not attempt Japanese dishes. They should stick to what they know, and what they do best. So go to Kyu for fresh noodles, but stick with their Chinese classics.

More like, "Icky. Eww". The only real review for this restaurant was the one posted by DT (http://www.urbanspoon.com/u/profile/1644855).
I should have gone with my first instinct and went to Wah Lai Yuen instead.
I Kyu reminds me of Lao Vientiane. They both pack their dishes with onions and vegetables that they overstocked on (probably went on sale).
Slow service, even though there were only two other tables served (and one was leaving).
Bad quality ingredients. The chicken in the soup was previously cooked (if not, it was probably used to make the broth, as the texture resembled rubber; by the way, you cannot make broth from chicken breast -- it has no flavor). The shrimp was equally bad, and tiny, and old (you can tell by the discoloration on the tail). Costco has bigger salad shrimp. The wonton was doughy and tasteless. No, I take that back. The wonton tasted OLD. Yes, it was on the verge of becoming spoiled. It had that peculiar odor before food turns bad. The broth for the wonton soup doesn't taste like wonton soup. Tastes more like hot water.
The only fairly decent ingredient I can comment on is the actual noodle.
My recommendation? Just buy the noodles, take it home and cook it yourself.
Disgusted. Definitely not coming back.

Wonderful Soups-Love this place!. I stopped in for the first of hopefully many visits to I Kyu Noodles on Wednesday. The server was most helpful in helping me make up my mind. I ordered the Shanghai noodle soup which arrived in a wonderfully steamy bowl topped with cilantro.(that I would have liked to see a bit greener) and a savoury fried pork mince and bean sprouts. The broth was fantastic. Not a trace of MSG in this place. Everything is made from scratch. The noodles were fantastic.

The only suggestion I would have would be that they have more choices for hot chili paste. The only thing they have is a chili oil which she warned (and correctly so I might add) that it is very hot. I didn't like the taste as it was on the bitter side of hot so I nipped next door and bought a small jar of Sambal Oleek which seems to add the right boost to Asian foods for me. I'll make sure to bring some next time.

Can't wait to return.

Great Lunch. We stopped in for lunch. It was delicious. We had the Dan Dan noodles, coconut shrimp and the gyozo. Excellent, all of them. My sister-in-law directed us to the place because the owner/chef makes his own noodles. Definitely a great find!
BooBoo
Hmmmm Good. Noodles and soup are awesome! Fresh made in house noodles and wontons. Had the gyoza and the hot and sour soup is the BEST I have ever had. I have been back numerous times. Spoke to the chef today and it was great to interact with him. Don't miss this place when in China town
Rebecca Evans
My favourite noodle place in B.C.! Their shrimp spicy wontons, pork juicy buns, dan dan mein, wonton noodle soup are all my favourite dishes and the list can easily go on and on. The owner said the noodles, wontons, gyoza, and juicy buns are all freshly homemade which can explain why the food is always so fresh whenever i eat there. They also have frozen noodles, wontons, gyoza, and even hot sauce and miso that customers can take home... Not to mention they also have gluten free noodles and vegetarian options. Although they may not have 10000 things to choose from the menu, what really matters to me personally is the quality of each dish. I really love this restaurant and i would DEFINITELY recommend it to anyone!
Richard H
I know what I want and it is noodles. Not burgers, not pizza, just noodles. Great interaction with chef/owner. Great noodles in a great location.
DT
Expensive, very mediocre. Went there because some people gave it good rating.
But was a big mistake.
Mediocre noodle bowls or dishes cost about $10 a piece, but not good quality in my opinions.
Very limited choices.
Ordered two wonton noodles soup, one chicken udon and chicken fried noodle.
Wontons were not tasty, no shrimp, and chicken meat was few in quantity and again not tasty.
Maybe I've been spoiled by Vancouver chinese food.
So very mediocre and expensive in comparison.
Chutneypie
Yummm. I have only eaten ramen noodle dishes here (I would like to try the udon noodle soup, and the wonton soup), and both that I have tried were very tasty. I really liked the dan dan noodles - I was initially disappointed when the dish arrived at my table because the way the menu was laid out I thought they would be in soup (only items that say they are in soup, are soup), but once I tasted them, all was forgiven, they were very tasty, and the ramen noodles were perfect in texture and very fresh. Like other posters have said it is not the cleanest restaurant; it needs a top to bottom scouring, including the windows, and that fish tank, well fish tanks should only be in restaurants if someone is willing to clean them regularly.

Hi I-Kyu. If you are a noodle fan this is definitely your destination in downtown Victoria. Delicious noodles handmade from scratch from a 3rd generation noodlemaker, with different tasty varieties to choose from. I love that there's no MSG cos even though it hasn't stopped me from eating savage amounts of asian food in the past, MSG always makes me feel all messed-up afterwards. So bonus points for that! Unfortunately I do have to agree with previous posters about the dirtiness. This place is a germaphobes nightmare and could definitely use a heavy scrubbing from floor to ceiling. Doesn't matter to a foodie like me though, I would eat dinner in a dumpster if the food is good enough, and I Kyu is!!
Grumpy Spoon
Good noodle and great customer service!. I see some people wrote here that the place is dirty. Maybe true. But for a restaurant in China Town, it's not bad at all. It was my first visit there today for lunch. We were the first customer for the day I guess. I was kinda suspicious because no one was in the restaurant although it was almost 12 noon. As soon as the food came, I knew I worried for nothing! I had Shanghai noodle and my girlfriend had coconut noodle. They were both fantastic! I'd give 10 out of 10. And I'd give 11 out of ten for the customer service. The owner (I believe) was very friendly, helpful in providing us with info on foods they serve. It was a fantastic lunch. I'd go back there again for sure.

Easily overlooked gem in Chinatown. We have been going to I Kyu Noodles since they opened and have never been disappointed by their amazing made -from-scratch noodles and dumplings. The dumplings and noodles are family recipes that have been handed down for 4 generations. Their dishes are healthy and delicious. My favourites are the Dan Dan noodles and the Coconut Shrimp noodles. Lately Carlos has been making spinach noodles...tender and just the right texture. The takeout sauces and dressing are homemade and I know many that we've introduced to the noodle house to now regularly stock their own homes with these condiments.

We also buy their homemade dumplings to steam at home.

Don't be fooled by the less than beautiful decor. The food is fabulous, reasonable and bring us back again and again.
Amjam
I Kyu is highly underrated.. The owner makes fresh noodles, gyoza, wontons, and dumplings, and the soups are all delicious! Sure the decor is a little ... bizarre and greasy-spoon, but the chef came out of the kitchen to ask us about our meal and seems really proud of what he does; I hope the business picks up for them once people realize how much better fresh noodles are! I Kyu has a small menu but the food is affordable and nothing seems msg-laden or greasy, which is more than I can say for the rest of chinatown's mediocre offerings. I Kyu, I salute you!
Roni Doyle
Soooo good. The coconut curry soup was so good, that I went back the next day and got some more. The shanghia wontons are too die for and the homemade kimchi was flawless. It is one of those wonderful little hole in the wall places that can be easily overlooked, but the food is so good. Also know that they make and supply the noodles and sauces to most of the restaurants on Fisgard.

Good Nooodle House. Happened here after reading fellow US reviewers' comments. Have 2 AGREE - this place serves up some yummy home-made soups.

We shared Spicy Shanghai Wontons and she had Coconut Chicken Noodle whereas I tried Hot & Sour Noodle Soup. Everything was yummy and really nice flavours and textures.

Good place 2 go if you're burnt--out of pub fare and fried foods
Foodie
Good food, quantity, price, service..!. I've been there a number of times now, the food is always so yummy. I particularly like that the noodles are made from scratch with NO MSG, NO PRESERVATIVES. Nothing beats FRESH wholesome noodles, not to mention the soup which accompanies them is also just as delicious.
Jax
Great little restaurant!!!. What a great find!!! Wonderful food at great prices. The freshly made noodles and wontons couldn't be better. Juicy pork buns are excellent. Wonderful service. Incredible sweet and sour soup too. Get a seat by the window for great people watching.
Tastebuds
Tastebuds. The broth for the wonton soup has real flavour and not the watery broth that is quite often served elseware. My wife and I have eaten there several times now and it is consistantly good.
Dillonbaycroft
Great place. My girlfriend and I go here often. I realy enjoy the food and the service. Try the shanghia wontons that is our favorite. All the food is made on site and they have frozen wontons available as well as diferent sauces to take home.
Scott Leslie
Was ok, but.... It was a bit odd that they brought me my main dish (pork and noodles) before the spring rolls and gyozas. And there were only 2 other customers in the place, so it's not like it was busy. Food was decent. Decor was... well, I think they are just getting going, definitely a family run place. I would go back for a second try.
Conny
Yummy.... very good Food. I really recoment their Coconut-Shrimp with Noodles in Soup.
Their homemade Gyoza is sooooooooooo good. I just found out, they sell fresh Noodles and frozen Dumpling to take home.

Fresh noodles made daily. A simple place in the old Foo Hong location, I was drawn in by the sign advertising that the noodles are made fresh daily by a 4th generation noodle maker. Exciting!

The udon noodles were very fresh, the wontons (which are also made fresh daily) were great and the pork juicy buns were delicious.

They sell their wontons, pork buns and fresh udon to go as well, and for a very reasonable price ... like $9.95 for 30 frozen pork buns or 40 wontons. The udon is $2.00 a container. I ate there and then bought a bunch to make at home later. The pork buns are especially recommended.
