Review Big Wheel Burger - Victoria

Lynn Gullason
This burger 🍔 bacon 🥓 cheese 🧀 actually filled me up. Was nicely spiced and very flavourful! Thank you so much 👍
Sandi Leong
Burgers are consistently excellent. The meat is ground fresh every morning which makes it taste top notch. Their garlic parm fries and milkshakes are THE BEST. Also appreciate that they focus on 100% sustainable practices!

I took my burger to go, so won't review the atmosphere, which is fine. The burger was very tasty and my vanilla shake went down well with it. Staff are friendly and accommodating and provided generous servings of mustard and ketchup to go. Next time I will try the onion rings.

Every time I hang on with friends around Cook Street village, Big Wheel is an option for a meal. The burgers have a perfect size, and they also taste great. I like the fries while I believe they can do better. I can remember lots of good memories from there!

If you are looking for a very good greasy cantine style burger, this is it. Very very good!

The food was amazing! Would totally come back here. I ordered the spicey Hawaiian, which wasn't that spicey tbh. And a side of fries which were excellent. Next time I'll just order the regular burger and fries (It totally gave me in-n-out vibes). The cashier was pleasent, but certainly didn't go above and beyond. The kitchen staff seemed chipper and cheerful. You can also sub in a veggie burger for any of the burgers which was great. And everything is biodegradable there, which I loved with my whole heart. Thanks for caring about the environment!

Not a place to go if you want to grab a quick meal, as the music is so loud (and bad) that it's obvious they don't want you to stay 1 minute longer than necessary... It was after 8 so maybe it's not that bad all the time. Food was good, fresh, well seasoned. No ice for drinks and everything is self serve like McDonald's but at least everything is compostable when you're bussing your own table. 😆

The first time I had their double cheeseburger via delivery app, I already became a fan. Here’s me trying their crispy chicken burger at Cook St. branch. They have a cool crew as well!
kerbal2346
Great place! Fries were amazing, food was served quick, and the restaurant itself is very nice, at least for waiting. The employee who took my order was also very nice, and seemed to enjoy his job. I also recommend the shake! I will be returning on my next trip to Victoria!
Christel Maki-Durand
Burgers are really good. Fries are hot and crispy. Prices are high though, $51.00 for two burgers, one fry, one Pepsi and one beer. Then I had to try the chocolate shake which was $7.50 plus tax.

Good local food! I love that they detail their sustainability and responsibilities. The staff are awesome. Only downside is the last few times I had a milkshake they were not mixed well and had lumps of solids in them.
Michael Waked
This was the very best burger that I have ever eaten. The Bun is soft and light, the meat itself is incredibly fresh and very tasty, the sauce makes the burger a good type of messy and the toppings on the burger are all so fresh. The chocolate chip cookies and Shakes are amazing. Top all of that off with the fact that everything on your tray is compostable makes this the best restaurant I have ever eaten at in my life. This is how fast food should be.

This is our go-to for lunch at least once a week. We appreciate the effort to be sustainable in their sourcing, and the burgers and fries are both superlative.

One of the best burgers in Vic! Close to home as well, so eat here as often as possible. Update fall of 2022: Still my goto smashburger spot, but it's REALLY hard to choose between my regular double cheese and bacon or the breakfast sandwich! If you haven't tried the breakfast sandwich yet, I highly recommend it.

We were a party of six. Cheeseburgers and fries all around. The food was exceptional but what really made my tail wag was the boissonberry shake. The staff were friendly and super helpful

We tried this restaurant for the 1st time and it's doubtful we will again. It was at The Gateway location. The cheeseburgers were not bad but nothing special (like a good A&W burger) and overpriced. Chicken burger was decent but again way overpriced. It was $20 for a chicken burger, regular fries and milkshake. The milkshake was not large and tasted low quality. Don't recommend the garlic fries...there was just a big blob of garlic on top of fries and it was overpowering and again, overpriced. The garlic was enough to make your eyes water. Pricey place and you dont get service because its set up like a fast food joint (without being fast). For a good burger Bin4 or Red Robin would be our vote but it's nice to see a place offering gluten free etc options for diners so kudos for that. We did find the young man that took our order to be excellent. Very positive and welcoming. If you want an overpriced burger and don't mind the self service, this place is adequate.

We finally got to try Big Wheel Burger last night and were extremely pleased with the speedy service, friendly staff and tasty burgers and shakes. If you've got a craving for some fast food, skip the regular chains and head on over for some top quality fresh food with fast order times. Definitely will be back.

Big thumbs up!! PHENOMENAL gluten-free options! Gravy is to die for!! Super friendly staff! Best ever!! Can't imagine anyone being disappointed with this gem!!!

I've had the giant burger on the secret menu there for the last two Saturdays. The meat is always perfectly cooked and the cheese is just melted perfectly! It's pretty interesting how the hot dogs remind me of bacon. I also love how the bun is two separate grilled cheese sandwiches on each end. So much cheese... I love it! The lettuce is fresh and good. No complaints from myself. I love how Big Wheel Burger is different from other places and the food doesn't hurt my sensitive stomach. Every other restaurant around here has something in the meat that just makes me feel sick. Totally worth the $18. Hope to be back there soon!
Brian Rose
Great food with large portion fries. They even provide a free cup for water if you don't what thier other options. Community feel great food.

I do not even have the words to express how fantastic big wheel is. I tell everyone coming to Victoria or even the island that it’s imparative to visit for a burger, pickles and a shake!!!
Mike Dezeng
Went to Big Wheel Burger on Cook St yesterday for the first time after hearing good things about it and was very impressed. My son had the cheeseburger with bacon and poutine and I had the double cheeseburger and fries and it was incredibly good, nothing fancy and not trying to be some new hip burger trend just a great old fashioned kick ass burger!!!! Will be back many more times I'm sure!!!
Matt Powsey
Burgalicious! Pretty stoked we now have a place where the whole family can eat. Our middle kiddo has some serious food allergies and it's great to be able to all dig into some good old fashioned burgers.
Tarynn Martin Copes
Was just at the Westside location for the first time (though I've been to Cook St a couple times before this) and just had what might possibly be the best chicken burger I've ever had in my 31 years of life. Perfectly moist chicken, wonderfully crunchy breading, and great flavour. I also went a little crazy and got bachelor tots too and they were amazing. Hopefully I'll make it back before the tots leave the specials board because my tongue definitely wants more!
Jennifer Mayer
First time trying Big Wheel and will definitely be back! We had a bacon & Brie burger, double cheeseburger, fries and poutine and it was all amazing. The gravy, oh, the gravy!!!! Great fast food without the environmental guilt.
Dana Jackman
Cook Street Village location is always the bomb! For people complaining about the price, please remember you are paying for local, fresh ingredients and patties made that day in house. I'm super glad that Big Wheel is committed to a carbon neutral establishment and am happy to pay for the high quality received. I'm very satisfied to be a Big Wheel Regular.
Fantasha Kassam
Great place to bring the kids. Always satisfied with the service and food
Alexander Britton
Awesome food and service, will definitely go again and recommend to friends.

I really hate to do this because I love the Cook St location so much, but I went to the Gateway Village location today for the first time and was very disappointed. First off, it took around 25 minutes after ordering to get our food. When the food finally came (after literally everyone else in the place had received their orders regardless of whether they showed up before or after us) we got a "Sorry for the wait", however a heads up while we were waiting would have been way nicer. Neither of our orders were special orders and we spent the entire time watching almost the same menu items getting served to people who showed up after us. A little explanation of why our food took so long would have gone a long way towards avoiding this review. My girlfriend's food was cold (she tried the Caesar fries and they were basically inedible because of this). My food was plenty hot (the burger was typical Big Wheel quality, can't complain about that), However my fries came with some unwanted hair :( It's unlikely I go back to the Gateway village location even though it is way more convenient for me. I really hope my experience was a one-off.

Best burgers in town. The garlic fries are amazing! Great staff! Vic west location is a gift of mana from the heavens!

This is a review for the new Westside Village location.  Went for the first time tonight with high hopes.  The special "Chili Con Queso Burger and Yam Fries" is advertised for $11 both outside and inside the restaurant.  Purchased the special and came home to find there were no fries.  Upon revisiting the restaurant was told that 'everything is separate', meaning the fries have to be purchased separately.  How anyone ordering the special as advertised would know that, is a mystery.  Pretty misleading.<br/><br/>Worst part is the burger itself was mediocre and dry.  Definitely not worth $11, and definitely won't be going back.  Fat Burger is miles better.
Richard Wise
I love how they came to Vic West! This is exactly what people want and they will pay for the good food. Vic West is the best place to live in Victoria in my opinion.  So much is booming and happening right now. Big Wheel brings quality local food with local beer and good drinks and amazing service. I went in today and they missed one milkshake in my order so they quickly made one up on the house. Their friendly customer service cant be beat. We need more quality comfort food places like Big Wheel and La Taquista in Vic West. I hope the restaurant at the new Marina is good. I will continue to hit up Big Wheel for my burger, dawg, fried pickle, and shake cravings!! :) :)

Overall:<br/>Pricey. <br/>Above average beef burger. <br/>Poor veggie burger. <br/><br/>A very popular place in Cook St Village. <br/>The hubs enjoys the fast food-style beef burgers and milkshakes. Not cheap "fast food" prices with added side and drink but ingredients are farm fresh and locally sourced. A step above FatBurger and Johnny Rockets; however... <br/>The veggie burger desperately needs attention! I wasn't impressed - the deep fried patty was hard, dry and not that flavourful. Unfortunately for nearly $9, a la carte, it wasn't worth it. Big Wheel is a dedicated burger joint in Victoria, known for a great beef burger, so it was a letdown. I sooooo want to come in and enjoy a good tasty veggie burg! I see I'm not the only one on here who has the same critique. It's such a competitive market in Vic with other joints knocking it out of the park in similar price range with like-minded eco-awareness such as Bin, Chuck's, PB, Dead Beetz, Very Good Butchers etc so I found my burger experience disappointing. <br/>Hubs- Beef Burger: 7/10<br/>Me- Veggie Burger: 2/10 (how painful to even write that!)<br/>I still stand by the $7.50 Black Bean Burger at Pink Bike as best value (and taste) in town.

Root beer BBQ burger. Need I say more ? That's their feature burger today when I was there. Deep fired pickles were great too. Service always friendly and fast.
CarbsForever
Great place and nice atmosphere. I believe in their core values and reasonably priced menu as well. They have feature burgers and a secret menu that are awesome!

Went with my son today, and wanted a beer with my burger ,in their paper cups instead of plastic tumbler.locale craft beer in a desguting plastic tumbler really? When I asked the female server she was completely condescending, she said well that's just to bad , you don't want plastic, if I give it to you in a paper cup you might leave with it. ( And I cant leave with your plastic thing)? I guess plastic would set of the alarm at the door. Won't go there anymore, you don't serve craft beer in plastic. And than give the customer rude remarks and looks sorry

Absolutely one of the better burger places in Victoria. Their burgers taste great and everything is local or made in house. I do think that the ratio of burger to bun is a little off (there is too much bun for the burger). I like that they have specials every week so there is always something new to try. Highly recommend their milkshakes and their ice-cream sandwich. They have outdoor seating and a little patio and it is dog friendly. If you tie your dog on the patio, you can watch them from inside as well as there are many windows.
Prabhanj Daniel
One of my favorite places for burgers in Victoria. They stick to simple, local ingredients and have a great vibe. If they happen to be serving the Key Lime Pie Milkshake when you go, make sure to try it.
Wema
Amazing burgers! Friendly staff and almost everything on heir menu is gluten free except the veggie burgers (as far as I know). It's always somewhat busy but not overwhelmingly so it's good<br/><br/>Definitely would recommend
Esdub
Not sure what they're trying to be. Decent burger with high prices. Inside atmosphere is basically a fast food joint, although I think some McDonalds would have better interior than them. Also, you need to really pay attention if you're sitting down after ordering because they don't call out your number. You gotta go back and check to see if your order came out.
Career_chip
While I love their (simple) burgers and fries, the specials seem to lack in value but devour your wallet. I don't mind paying an extra dollar for a special milkshake, but $4 extra for a specialty burger? Pretty silly considering it's always a single patty, and always (in my experience) less tasty than their regular burgers.<br/>If they kept their specials at a reasonable price, I would definitely be there more often.<br/>Great fried pickles though! Just keep the prices down for a self serve joint. Your meat is good, bit I can get a freshly ground, steak trimming burger (and fresh cut truffle garlic fries) cooked rare/medium rare from Brasserie L'ecole for the same price as one of your fast food style burgers.<br/>If you're gonna shoot for the stars, make sure we don't pay the exorbitant price for you doing so.<br/><br/>#afterthefactburger: As much as I love your burgers, the specials are priced far too high. I remember getting a lamb burger one time, and it had less going on than your regular burger. I can understand a dollar upgrade or so for the special, but 3-4 dollars? That seems silly. I bet that lamb burger without cheese or toppings didn't cost $4 more than the regular cheeseburger.<br/>Shape up and slim down Bigwheel.
A Tip Is A Gift Not A Right
Not much to say, bland, patties are too small for the buns and when you ad everything up just too expensive for what you get. Best part? The fries! Place could probably use a good cleaning from what i can see!
Edwina Darling
Really great burgers!! I've had their regular big wheel burgers three times now and it's always fresh and consistent. Love the gluten free buns and the beef is juicy and well cooked. Yum!

Wow! Looking at reviews, I wasn't expecting much when I stepped into this adorable little spot in the heart of Cook Street Village for a bite. After 7pm on a Saturday, the line was nonexistent, unlike when I passed by earlier in the day. For a flat $16 I ordered a cheeseburger with fries and a shake. The cookies and cream shake is BY FAR the best shake I've had ever, anywhere. They should have a caution: habit forming label on the cute eco friendly cup it comes in. The burger was to die for, the perfect amounts of fixings, sauciness, and meat to satisfy without making a sloppy mess of yourself. Perfection, right down to the angelic level of toastiness on the bun. The fries, hot and crunchy, perfectly salted and fluffy on the inside like the perfect fry should be. This neat little joint was anything but a dive: well maintained condiment bar, all the tables, counters, and floors were impeccable, and the staff were friendly and charming. Big Wheel Burger will definitely be seeing my patronage again.

Had heard of this place and wanted a hamburger and fries. The four of us went in and ordered at the counter. We all ordered burgers and fries and one ordered pickles. The food arrived reasonably fast which was a good thing. The table we sat at was filthy, one of our girls went to the counter to tell the dark haired slim woman and she gave her a cloth to clean it herself which was not impressive. The burgers were extremely dry and the french fries were overcooked and seemed to us to be frozen. The place to get the onions and ketchup had what appeared to be fruit flies flying around.  We were not impressed and will not return
Greg
This place is the old burger joint from my childhood of the 60's. The only difference is the price. A burger, fries and a shake costs $15. The ambiance is greasy spoon. You order your food at the cash and pick it up when your name is called. They do a good job at what they do. The shake tastes like a real milk shake. The pre-salted fries are very good. The burger is just like they made them at the soda counter in the good old days. There is no artisan bun or fancy schmancy fillings. It's pretty basic. Obviously a lot of people like them that way because it's a busy little spot.
Janedanko123
Burnt bun. I usually like Big When when I go but my last visit they burnt both my burger and my bun. I was pretty disappointed because I spent close to $10 on a burnt burger. The staff is mostly quite nice though
Jvangyn
Awesome the only place to go for burgs. Consistent, fresh, and super delicious. I love Big Wheel. It a weekly staple in our household!
Julia
A little on the expensive side-but you're paying for the amazing quality beef. Yummy burger with good sauce, and great crunchy fries. Another plus for this place is their great milkshakes! Often times we'll swing buy just to get a shake, looking forward to whatever crazy concoction they've got on feature. My favourite so far was the fruit loops shake! Nostalgic and delish. I would recommend this place to anyone, they have a veggie burger as well as gluten free options. Yummy yummy yummy
Karlaleuze
Not what I expected. Soggy hotdog and the burgers were really not tasty. Had heard great things, so I was surprised with how bad the food was. I do not feel like going back. Sorry!
Carina Therese
Great burger! Surprised to see the negative reviews. Good bun great flavor sauce and yummy fries! First time here but I'll be back!
Megtdoc
Quality fast food. I've been to big wheel about 10 times over the past 2 yrs. Its always been tasty. I have had their veggie burger which isn't my style but the beef burgers are delicious. I've also had their poutine and lord of the fries. Nom nom oh and the shakes also tasty business. Staff have always been friendly and quick when I've gone in. I see a lot of negative reviews on here but certainly not my experience.
Anwahs13
Worst poutine. I had a burger last night and it was good but I unfortunately ordered poutine and it was truly disgusting. The cheese wasn't actual cheese curds and that gravy was that horrible veggie powdered junk. I would go back for the burger...maybe
FeedMe
Not sure why people don't like this place. It's crazy talk if you ask me. A great burger and fry joint downtown. It sounds to me these bad reviews are people that know nothing about good burgers and fries. And let's not forget the milkshakes!!
Gallifrey10.11
Good Food, Bad Service. I have been really disappointed in the service from here. They are just "ok" at best. The website has a secret menu the staff don't seem to know about. I tried to order a 3 Wheel Burger and The Circle Of Life Burger and the girl flat out told me its not something on their menu. I had to show her on my phone and even then she said she did not know how to ring this in. <br/><br/>Another time I tried to order food for pick-up and no one answered the phone. I called three times. When we got there the girl said they were busy and they forget to charge the phone. <br/><br/>My final visit this lady said she had no idea and walked away from the till. She told the younger girl with black hair to help me. <br/><br/>When they opened the service was great. I would eat there once a week. But I won't be going back anymore. I like good service with my burgers and poutine. And unfortunately this is not at this place to do it.

Just keep driving....terrible burger restaurant!. I guess I should get to the food reviewing here but first I must mention the unfortunate run-in I had with the mustard dispenser. The condiment station had those pump-style ketchup and mustard dispensers so I grabbed my little paper cup to get some mustard and WHAMMY....a cup of mustard shot straight out and plastered my skirt, t-shirt and sweater. The young girl working there saw my open mouth and frozen position and oddly didn't appear either shocked or surprised. She disappeared for a few minutes and then came towards me with 3 paper napkins...really? I asked for something a tad more helpful...so she rummaged around for a wash cloth. I found out later from the "shaking finger" staff...that there was a sign above the mustard dispenser that I had failed to read. The staff was completely dismissive and I think irritated by my asking for help packaging up my meal so I could get home to change my clothes. As for the food review (mustard mishap aside) the burger was seriously overcooked, salty and the bun was cold. I ordered a cheeseburger and I'm pretty sure I didn't spot any cheese....only a sort of distant cousin to Triple O sauce. All this restaurant delivered was a crappy meal with super rude staff. I guess I am left wondering why a business would actually pay to have a permanent cautionary sign made for this "possessed" mustard dispenser instead of changing the system?. It's like the trick ring that shoots water in your eye, only there ain't no ha-ha in mustard. I know I can't be the only one that managed to miss the sign and paint their outfit yellow. Please skip right on by this miserable excuse for burger joint.
Alexandra White
Only good thing about this place anymore is their Cajun fries that magic sauce (which today was actually far to mustardy) and their shakes. it's very sad how downhill they've gone used to be the best simple bugers in town but after many many many second chances the buger I had today with the stale as hell bun -so stale it was crumbling as I ate it- Was the final straw truly a sad sad day.
Alexis Eldstrom
My favorite local burger place in victoria. Great food, chill atmosphere and really great staff. Never had a bad meal and I recommend Lord of the Fries
La La
I am shocked at the negative reviews!!! I love, love, love Big Wheel. The food is consistently cooked to perfection and the menu is very creative. The staff always have a smile on their face!! I travel to Victoria once a month and within the first few days of my arrival it's on my list of places to go!!! The fried pickles are amazing!!!
SL4D3
Tasty butterball burgers and fried delights. First time there a month ago. We ordered cheeseburgers, and shared their awesome tossed-garlic fries, Chop-Chop salad, and deep-fried pickles. Everything was very tasty and fresh, and the large portions between the two of us went unfinished and taken home. If you are looking for a home-made style grease hit, this place does the job mighty fine. It is a semi-self-serve cafeteria style layout, and the place was kept very clean by the courteous staff.
Arsenate
Like Wendy's, but bigger.. It tasted exactly like a Big Bacon Burger or whatever Wendy's calls it, but was a lot bigger. Pretty greasy, even by burger standards. Good option if you want that fast food taste without going to a fast food chain, I guess.
Richard Martin
First time here heard great reviews by other great burger places Found their double cheeseburger really good french fries ok but chicken gravy probabily out of a can but upside the girl behind the counter was a cutie
Lgpmg
Disappointed. Loved it when it first opened, love the fact that its local grass fed beef. BUT... went there the other day and was thoroughly disappointed.... Overcooked patties, soggy buns, no flavor, milk spilt all over the floor with a rag tossed on it that nobody cleaned the entire time, dirty bathroom, dirty restaurant, lackadaisical staff, hipsters everywhere... $45 for 3 burger combos. :-| I think next time I'll just go to Fatburger.
WC
Terrible Food. Burgers were burnt on the outside and near raw on the inside. What we did eat, not surprisingly, had no flavor - just a lot of salt. Fries were cold and inedible. One of the worst meals we've eaten in Victoria. It was a take out order that we ended up tossing in the garbage.
Nick
Burned and crunchy meat patties. Second time here, first time was alright, but I loved the fries. The food came, the fries were great, but the burger patties were blackened, crunchy and burnt. Both of them. I let the staff know and the cook offered to make me another burger but we didn't have time. Obviously the cook saw the burnt to a crisp charcoal patties and served them anyways. The chili cheese fries were mediocre at best. Weak chili spice in plain boring beef with shredded low-end parmesan on top. Ho-hum. The house red was bad. Not worth $55.00 for a couple of burgers and fries, with 2 glasses of rot-gut red at $5 for a small juice glass.
Holly Honolulu
We are so so disappointed. The fries are soggy with one blob of crushed garlic on the top :( the burger is a flat boring VERY EXPENSIVE waste of money . Big Wheel Burger you used to rock. 30 bucks for 2 burgers and those horrible fries.
Brendan Mather
This place is awesome. Burgers are fresh and juicy!! Locally sourced meat and quality ingredients.
The Fridge
Just alittle over priced and way to many hypsters, but other then that the food is great!
Meg_1982
Too plain for this plain jane. Just had dinner at Big Wheel Burger for the first time and was very disappointed. The restaurant decor is fast-food, but the prices are upscale. <br/><br/>I like plain jane burgers, but I ordered a cheese burger and it has no taste. Too plain for this plain Jane. The bread was terrible. Worse than McDonald's - soft mushy sugary. Did not go at all with the higher quality beef patty. Limited condiments were available to put on the burgers. As for the fries - 1/2 were very overcooked. <br/><br/>They did have a gingerbread milkshake on special tonight, which was absolutely delicious, but didn't make up for the lackluster burger and fries. I will not return.
Tastebud
The ghost chili pepper hot sauce is delicious and the burgers are tastey not sure why all the bad reviews but this place is spot on and great service
SwampLily
Rude Owner!. My family and I have been eating at Big Wheel since they opened; at least once a week some or all of us go there for lunch or dinner. That changed today and we will NEVER give Big Wheel Burger our business again! <br/><br/>My husband and I had enjoyed a nice lunch, and afterwards we decided to go by the meat shop a few doors down. Before leaving, I asked the (very pleasant and helpful) woman behind the till if it was okay to keep our car in the lot for a few more minutes while we went to the meat shop. She said no problem, that was fine.<br/><br/>We went by our car first to drop off our leftovers when we encountered a very hostile woman in a truck in the parking lot. She started griping at us because she couldn't find a parking space, and she wanted us to leave even though we politely explained the situation. She declared herself the owner of the business, griped at us some more, and demanded to know who had given us permission!<br/><br/>You'd think the owner would be happy that people are at her business, not be rude to them because they aren't leaving fast enough for her taste! This encounter with the owner ruined what had been a nice lunch, and made us decide to never support this very rude person's business ever again.
Ryan Mijker
Love it. Best bugers ever. .... Love it.<br/>Best bugers ever. They use the best food cooked to perfectio. Great milkshakes too.
Ally Cat
Meh.. I agree with previous post.. Definitely full of uncaring hipster staff. The only nice employee there is the chick who works the register. <br/><br/>Burgers are okay. They slather the buns in butter so it basically just becomes one giant sloppy mess. If you order take out they stupidly put the burgers at the bottom of the bag and they get squished.<br/><br/>Poutine is nasty. The gravy they use is worse than the powdered stuff, has a weird taste and is lumpy.<br/><br/>Deep fried pickles are good but they are pretty stingy on how many they give you. Their 'homemade ranch sauce' is disgusting! I asked if they have real ranch dip the guy gives me attitude and is completely rude about it. I don't care if you make that dip yourself, it's gross and never consistent. It doesn't even taste like ranch so god forbid I ask for something that does.<br/><br/>Get over yourselves guys, your food sucks! Might I add overpriced. $34+tip for 2 burgers, 1 drink, poutine and deep fried pickles. I'd rather have spent that money at a restaurant and received better service, a better atmosphere and better food.
Gregg
Wheeling and dealing. Im not sure why people are going here if it sucks soooo bad and over priced....Hmmmm
Foody McGee
I am a burger fanatic. I'm proud to say that I've eaten hamburgers at well over 100 different establishments. When I heard that the owners actually travelled to NY to research hamburgers I was excited to eat here. I ate here when it opened, ate here a year later, and ate here now. All I can say is if you are in the neighborhood with your kids it might be a place to check out. Just be prepared to take out another mortgage to afford it. For what you get for the money, I'd bank your cash, walk half a block up and try out Bubbys Kitchen. Atleast there staff feels genuine and hospitable, the food is fresh and most importantly the restaurant is clean. But if you like flat buns, uncaring hipster staff, and extremely pricey flat top singles, then burn that cash away!
Chloe89
Yum, says the vegetarian.. BEST! Veggie burger ever. I'm obsessed with it. The best hungover treat. Also the deep fried pickles so good. Ice cream sandwich..amazing. Anyways..I clearly love the food. The service is always really happy and cheerful too. Also informative. And the food is made fast. Thanks for being awesome BIG WHEEL!

$$$. Burgers are good, but prices are way too high.
Vicsnax
This place makes a mean order of deep fried pickles! Seasoning is good and sauce matches perfectly
Jennifer Dempsey
Amazing place!!! Sure you might pay a little more for a burger but it is WORTH IT! Everything is local, they are the most amazing green place I've been too and the food is fantastic!!!! I would reconmend this place to anyone.
HappyHealthyQuality
Great food! Quality meats and ingredients to create a super simple meal that tastes amazing! I have been there often and have yet to be disappointed! Veggie burger is the best I have ever had, burgers are great and fresh! Fries are amazing! Milkshakes are always good! Will reccomend this place over and over! The staff is always friendly and upbeat!! Keep up the good work!
Albertabeef
Really depends on what your after. If u want a "gourmet" fancy burger this place is not for you. If u want a juicy simple burger like on a good BBQ on a sunny day. Then this is your place. I had a double cheeseburger. (Took a pic) really simple. Basically meat, cheese, house sauce and lettuce. The creole poutine was not a fav of. But had a bunch of olives on it. And I'm not a fan. I would return again. But not go out of my way from Langford again.
Al
No.. This place was pleasant enough I guess, but a total rip-off. When I paid nearly ten bucks for a 'fishwich' I assumed it came with fries or something. It turns out they couldn't even spring for a slice of cheese on it. The sandwich itself was totally flavourless. I think Big Wheel is basically McDonalds for people who think they're above going to McDonalds.
Chrissy
Milkshake was totally delicious and very different - mango milkshake was lovely and creamy! The beef patty and fries were yummy, but would have liked a softer bun. Maybe I got them on a bad day, but the bread tasted a bit stale.

Quality Local Fast Food. I live in the neighbourhood and get a veggie burger here a couple of times a month. It has always been delicious and everyone I have brought with me agrees wholeheartedly. I love that the patty is stuffed with cheese, and I usually toss on some of their free condiments, like ketchup, mustard, and hot peppers for an extra jolt of flavour. The deep fried pickles are unbelievable.<br/><br/>I don't understand the poor reviews for this place. Yes, it is pricier than other fast food burger places but I assume that is necessary for them to cover costs that keep the business more sustainable and offer menu items prepared in-house. Personally, I don't mind paying a slight premium for the quality of food, and more pleasant atmosphere/staff. Plus, the portions are huge so I am never left hungry! If you want cheap burgers, go to McDonald's and get a Big Mac.
Jbutt
Over-priced fast food. When you add up your sides and a drink you might as well go to a real restaurant and get a proper burger. The minimalist burger design doesn't work when you serve tasteless over or under cooked patties. The first time I went here they burned my burger to a chunk of charcoal and the next time it was undercooked to a dangerous degree. But the bottom line is that NONE of us could finish our food due to the taste or lack of taste. A discount supermarket pack of burger patties cooked at home and some re-heated McCain fries is a few steps above the food here. How do you screw up fries so bad?<br/>With so many amazing and cheap burgers in town there's no reason to go here.

Good food! Love the sustainable aspect! They could think about expanding their menu a bit but other than that it's great!
Misshonesty
Absolutely love this place! Sooo good ! Love the sauce that are on the burgers, and super affordable, but I didn't like the smell of weed when I walked in the back door one time..
Kevin
One of my friends told me " they're doing big things with gluten free" that's not what I saw when the girlfriend and I went for dinner. It wasn't that the food was bad but I just felt like I could have done it all at home myself. That's not what I look for in a restaurant.

I'm not sure what kind of hallucinogens you all are on if you think this place is expensive. Perhaps too many are accustomed to McDonalds prices. Big Wheel is just fine - juicy burgers, shakes, fries, etc at reasonable prices. Good all around grub joint. If you're looking for an overcooked burger with fancy toppings then maybe go to Pink Bicycle.
Sinja
Good Grub. A Cook Street local resident took me to Big Wheel for lunch. I opted for the bacon and brie burger (delicious) and we shared a poutine with veggie gravy (not bad and enough for two). I wanted a milkshake but I thought it would be too much. I whole heartily support this local establishment because it offers good food that is locally sourced and uses environmentally-friendly supplies.

Medium Wheel. The burger was a little soft for my taste, burgers cooked on a flat top grill should have a nice tasty crunch on the outside and juicy on the inside. Fries were dry and tasteless. Average food, above average prices. Don't bother.

Why the hate? This stuff's good!. Admittedly they are a touch pricey and not nearly as creative or accommodating as Bin 4 but this is a damn good patty. It's prepared fresh to order (sorry that made to order takes some time, but suck it up!) cooked high-temp flat top style. This is not for everyone, clearly, but for me, it is worth it. It saves me travelling to California which even at triple the price of In N Out, is worth it because the nearest In N Out is 1000 miles away, and quality of the beef is better! So when I'm fixing for a burger that's just falling apart with awesome and I don't want to change or even get seated or tip, I hit Big Wheel.

We like, and no regrets. Fresh, tasty, juicy, a superior burger - the Mercedes of fast food burger and fries. Partner and I were pleasantly surprised. Cheeseburger! Cheeseburger!
FeedMe
Not very tasty but environmental!. Just from reading all the write-ups around the restaurant, I see they have less waste than most fast food chains, use recyclable utensils, use local ingredients for less environmental impact, and my favorite thing: their beef is antibiotic and hormone free! That is amazing. You never know what kind of chemical meat you're eating at other fast food chains.<br/>I don't find the food THAT expensive, especially for a local place that uses local ingredients and has many homemade items. Fast food isn't as cheap as it once was, unless you buy from a value menu.<br/>As for the food itself, yeah, probably not the best burger in town. I'd go for other fast food burgers over Big Wheel. The patties are very thin. The poutine wasn't great either and I don't think they cut their own fries, which is disappointing.<br/>I'd only go here if I wanted a "healthier" fast food option.

Seriously?!. So after reading the reviews of Big Wheel Burger on the net, I for some reason decided to try it anyway. I'm thinking that any good review of this place must have been written by someone on the payroll, because, it is no where near good.<br/><br/>Upon placing my order for a Double Decker cheeseburger with fries and a drink, I was astonished to see my bill reach $17.00!!!<br/><br/>So I thought, ok, it's a pretty big burger, and if it's 17 bucks, it must be good. It's all a front, my friends! So for 17 dollars, I received a burger that was mostly bun and lettuce. The burger patties were in there, but they were an eighth inch think, and charred beyond imagination. It felt like I was eating a crunchy slightly burger flavoured chip. I didn't know burgers were supposed to be crunchy!! I could maybe....MAYBE.... forgive this, if the burger tasted like anything at all! But instead the whole package was a flavorless, crunchy overcooked burger that had a bunch of crap from the flat top stuck to it. The fries were out of a box basic, and the drink was fountain coke.<br/><br/>I would, if I was drunk enough, pay $5 for this meal again, but 17??? That's asinine!! <br/><br/>If you're thinking of going to Big Wheel Burger, save yourself some money, and disappointment, and just go to Mcdonalds. Believe it or not, I think Mcdonalds actually tastes better than this place!! and for 1/4 of the price too! Would never ever, under any circumstances, waste 17 bucks on a crummy burger at this place ever again. You could get a steak for 20 bucks easy, at any pub in town. What a waste of money this place is. Better yet, go to Red Robins if you're looking for a burger feast. Absolutely reasonable priced, and the burgers are actually VERY VERY good!! Red Robins kicks this place out of the water 10 times out of 10. Will never be back, Big Wheel Burger, Never!!!

Hands in my wallet. You know I just wanted a burger and a milkshake. It was a nice day and I decided to go to BIg Wheel. The burger is fine if you are looking for a run of the mill burger. I didn't really like the milkshake... but it too was fine. What really chapped me was the the total for a double cheeseburger with bacon and a shake was $16.50!!!!<br/><br/>If you are going to rob me just do it. But trying to charge me 16.50 for a burger with no sides and a shake is just embarrassing. I don't know how you can justify that. Again.... that's $16.50 for a burger and a shake....crazy

Review for Big Wheel Burger. This is a cool burger place that has all the fun of a fast food restaurant without the weird corporate grease feeling. The burgers and fries are really good. I am always scared to order burgers because I am pretty picky about what I like on it, but they list the ingredients honestly and will actually listen if you don't want certain things on them. If I have any criticism, it's that the pop cups start to fall apart if you let them sit around with pop for too long. That's a pretty minor thing. I also wish I lived closer. I hope they continue to prosper and stuff. <br/><br/>Edit: Whoa, I wrote that in 2012.  Okay, it's 2016, and I have this to say.  I still like Big Wheel Burger.  BUT.  If you get a couple burgers with fries and a couple beers and factor in the tip, it's around fifty bucks.  And then you're like what, I could have gone to one of the perhaps classier burger places in Victoria and spent a similar amount?  So my critique is that prices should come down a little bit to stay competitive in the better-than-fast-food-chains-but-more-convenience-than-fancy-burger-places bracket.

First time caller.... ...long enough time listener.<br/> I understand that it's easier and faster to criticize. Hopefully most rational and normal people take this into account when researching and reading all forums.<br/>Comments are usually skewed to the negative. If someone has a good experience, it does not occur to them to take it a step further and share that good time. Yet the naysayers/complainers/trolls/what have you - are quick to post. A shame that is.<br/>Victoria is a fickle market. It truly is unique in it's composition.<br/>The fact is this: Big Wheel is putting out a quality product. there is no denying it. <br/>Prices? Give your head a shake. Go to Mcdonalds then. <br/>On my most recent visit, had the ghost burger> Perfect amount of hot.I don't even feel the need to talk about the patty, bun, toppings. It's all good. (A milkshake would have been a perfect accompaniment, but couldn't spare the calorie's) because the fries are perfection! I choose my battles. <br/>Shared the fries with the friend (plenty) and her burger. What, it cost 20 bucks? meh. please.<br/>I have never had a less than delicious experience at Big Wheel, and make it a point to eat there, usually when I land, on my frequent visits to Victoria. <br/>They are so far ahead of the game, apparently most of the poster's don't even realize. If only Vancouver had a place where you could find a good. decent. burger.

Yum. Despite the reviews I tried Big Wheel Burger since it is very close to my house. I gotta say, it was delicious. I had the veggie burger and it was stuffed with cheese and had fresh veggies on top and a great sauce. The fries were tasty too. I don't know about the beef burgers but I completely enjoyed the veggie one!
Madbiker1
A disappointment. I took my wife to this restaurant expecting something pretty great knowing that Jeff and Peter are involved in the ownership of this restaurant but was hugely disappointed. One reviewer commented that it was a Whitespot burger - and I'd agree except that the patty itself was pitiful. Just about the same whitespot sauce on top. The flavour of the patty was good but it was about the size of a Mcdonalds regular hamburger.<br/>Jeff - you know what people want. With this many poor reviews, I think you know what to change. Looking at your overall systems, it would probably require a major menu overhaul for costing and I think the idea is a good one but the product needs a major revamp.<br/>1) Bun was OK - slightly sweet which was odd.<br/>2) Organic beef is a plus - but the patty needs to be bigger - I had trouble even finding the patty in my burger.<br/>3) Sauce that isn't the same as Whitespot or the special sauce on a Big Mac.<br/>4) The bacon on my Canadian Burger was so tough that I couldn't bite through it,<br/>5) Poutine had no character. Out of the box fries and not really that impressive<br/><br/>I hope that you get back on track with this.
Mark
Uneffingreal!. That was by far the tastiest burger ever!!! I am going to make Big Wheel Burger a weekly ritual; please don't change a thing!
Jane
Was not expecting much from this place based on previous reviews. I had this weird feeling of familiarity that I couldn't quite put my finger on and the boom! it hit me. This is ferry food! Even the long narrow set up, sticky tables and trash everywhere were reminscent of that stupid boat we all hate. I would comment on the food but there's not much to say-it was adequate. I know why people eat that stuff on the ferry but with all the other options in Victoria-why would anyone subject themselves to this??

Will not return. What i ordered - 2 x cheese burger and poutine to share with my wife. What we thought - Burger was too pink, patty small and overall flavorless. Fries seemed quality and used cheese curds but gravy was awful, tasted like a canned cravy...not poutine. For an extra $10 we could have went to Bin 4 and had a real burger. I will never eat here again. Anyone reading this you can do better.

WONDERFUL. I love Big Wheel. Sustainability - wonderful. Chili fries - wonderful. Shakes - wonderful. Burgers - top notch! Its all so messy and delicious!<br/><br/>Never had a bad experience let alone burger from Big Wheel Burger!
Amy L
Milkshake. There are enough comments about the burger and sadly I agree. It's a dimension-less burger that cost 7.50. 7.50! Anyways, I had the chocolate chip cookie milkshake at Culinaire and LOVED it. Even bought more tickets so I could have another! However, after picking up a true sized milkshake this past weekend, I was so disappointed on the entire car ride home. I could not get even one small bit of cookie through the straw. I basically sucked back a vanilla milkshake and ate the super sweet cookie bits at home. Not the same experience and such an amateur mistake. Please buy bigger straws? Good luck with the business, I'm sure with all of these comments, you are eager to move ahead of all of this and find a balance.

The burger is phenomenal! Best I have ever had. Crispy around the edges and moist inside. No fillers. At first I wasn't crazy about the bun but have gotten used to it and now I quite like it. The fries are nothing special but the burger is the main attraction and more than makes up for it.<br/>Love the environmental consciousness!

Cook Street disaster. We were happy to see a new eatery open in the Villiage until we tried the food. We thought our first bad experience was due to the Big Wheel just opening the week before. It was less than average. We live close to the village and frequent the local restaraunts and support all that is local. After our last (yes last) experience we will not be going back - ever. The burger bun was totally dry and hard on one side like when buns are micro-waved too long. The frys were dreadful, overcooked and dry with half the order being the little sharp end bits. Bad on you Big Boys!
Janice
Not going back. I decided to give Big Wheel a second try today. I had tried it once before when it first opened and there was a huge line and crowd to deal with. I was not impressed. However, I did decide it could be worth another chance. Again, I was not impressed. There was a long wait for my order to be cooked, despite the fact that the place was almost empty. My bun was dried out and tasted like a cheap crumbly supermarket bun. The meat was flavorless and overcooked. Very dry burger overall. This place is no comparison to some of the other (I will not name) excellent burger restaurants that are now available in Victoria.
Grubolini
Nice cheeseburger. I like the bun. Meat is a bit thin but good texture. Fries were disappointing- standard frozen McCains style with skins. Choc shake was ok. Tasted like it was made with chocolate ice cream. Overall. It was $14 for these 3items. Pricey.

Pros: - really fast, consid.... Pros:<br/>- really fast, considerate service<br/>- local sourcing<br/>- rotating specials<br/>- delicious food, DUH!<br/><br/>Cons:<br/>- price is a bit high<br/>- no local wine :(<br/><br/>All in all, a good burger & fry shack, probably the best around the park. If you are a serious foodie looking for a modern redefinition of the hamburger, you're in the wrong place.
Irsqu_u
I live 5 mins away from Big Wheel, I know there are a lot people that have a hate on for this place. In my opinion it offers exactly what is advertised, fast food. The meat is miles above in terms of quality compared to other fast food outlets. The shakes are solid, the ice cream sandwiches are amazing and the fries are now really good. I haven't eaten a burger I haven't liked yet, and I've had my fair share. My only complaint is the cost of admission is a little high. If they took a dollar off of everything I think it would be more in tune to what people would be willing to pay for fast food burgers and fries. If you want a more gourmet burger this is not the place.

The Worst!. Cook St. Village now smells like an overpriced McDonalds thanks to this place...gag
Yummmmmy
A was pretty excited to try this place but disappointed. Not that I was going there to have a healthy meal but my food was dripping grease, I had to blot all my food with napkins before I could even consider eating it. If you want a burger this is not the place to go. I do appreciate the nostalgic feel but the food isn't good enough to go back.

Honestly, it tasted like they took cafeteria food and tried to make it cuisine. burger patties were bland and over cooked. too much salt, not enough flavour!! the fries tasted like they just came from the cafeteria at my old university. veggies were not fresh at all. soggy bun. My meal consisted of a drink, fries and burger and it came to a total of.........20 dollars!!! can you believe that?? so ridiculous. I should have gone to mcdonalds since the burger meat essentially tastes the same. the whole sustainability argument put forward by this establishment is absurd when you accept that most of the energy they are saving will just be sold by our province back to the united states any way. the amount of trees saved by the napkins is so minuscule that it is almost pointless. nothing more than a petty marketing strategy. if you REALLY cared about the environment you would be serving the cook st clientèle vegan food out of troughs. I won't be back big wheel.

If that isn't the best burger in Victoria .... ... it'll do until the best gets here. Had a Double Burger with cheese, and it was fabulous. Right up there with 'Five Guys' in the US - which was the best 'fast food' hamburger I've ever had. Friends had a Vacca (double w/ cheese & bacon) and a single. Love that you could get a combo with draft beer, and the milkshakes are made with real ice cream. The one thing I wish they had was fresh sliced jalapeños, instead of regular pickled banana peppers - makes a nice, crisp addition to a quality burger like that. Fries were good too, and they weren't busy so they gave us a bunch extra. Very nice front end service.<br/>Sure the price point is higher, but there's no doubt it's a great burger place and all three of us will be back. Keep it up!<br/><br/>PS. Be careful though, and get a railing on that patio on the side. When it gets dark, I'd be worried about someone having a few beer and taking a header off the deep end onto the sidewalk.

3 ppl - 1st timers: 1 veggie burger, 2 cheeseburgers & 1 chilli fries - initial few bites - cheeseburger - love, veggie - ok, and chilli fries are great

You call that a burger?. I was so disappointed with the burger. Not only was it dry, flat and tasteless, but so little care was put into the product that the burger wasn't even in the center of the large horrible bun (slopped/slapped between white buns). I can't believe that cook street village would allow such a low quality burger joint to open up in the village. I get it that this is supposed to be "fast type food", but it was just baaaad. I haven't eaten at McDonalds for years, but I'm guessing there is a reason why it's so successful..... because they have flavor. If a fast food burger is what your after, at the least head to Fat Burger. The old saying stands true that you can taste when your food is made with love and pride.............clearly this was not my experience.
Doug
Delicious food. Good value. Friendly service.. I visited with some trepidation after reading recent negative comments but we (7 of us) were very pleased with the quality and price. Although the place was packed, we had a short wait after ordering our food at the counter. My wife and I opted for the cheeseburgers and we shared an ample order of fries and a glass of ale... for a total of $23. We helped ourselves at the garnish table - mustard, ketchup, onions, hot peppers etc. Everything was delicious. We will definitely dine here again.

Not worth the drive. We drove in from Colwood after reading about Big Wheel in a local magazine. We especially wanted to go for the gluten-free bun option. My two girls and I went, both girls getting the kids meal and I had a cheeseburger with a gluten-free bun. Our total was a whopping $22.50. I was surprised, but thought the food would win me over. Turns out - it did not. When we opened our bad before leaving - there were no cookies for the kid meal, there were also no toys. Tuns out, they were out of toys - and the cookies were stale. The hot dog on the kids meal was salty, there were no condiments on the bun (nor were we told to grab any - and we discovered this at Beacon Hill Park where we were picnic'ing) and the kid burger was SWIMMING in some kind of sauce. My gluten free bun/burger was dry, with two pickles and some wilted lettuce on it. There was also one tomato (if you can cal it that) that was seedy and sloppy. But I was thankful for some moisture that it provided, as the bun was dry, tasteless and not up to par of what I have had from Origin Bakery before. These tasted like they were defrosted to order.<br/><br/>Will not be returning. Not at all impressed. Brought my burger home, added some sauce and new veggies on it, put in on one of my buns at home, and even reheated - it was better than what I paid for at Big Wheel.

It is what it is. I was expecting horrible food when I finally tried this place after reading all the bad reviews online. My expectations were so low, that when my food arrived I was pleasantly surprised. It was on a sunny weekend when lots of people were out enjoying the weather at Beacon Hill Park and Dallas Road. I was out on a bike ride with my girlfriend when we thought we would give it a try. We shared a cheeseburger, fries, and a strawberry shake. I would say the food was on par with Fat Burger, or Dairy Queen. It reminded me of the kind of burger you might get out at Western Speedway or the old Memorial Arena. I think its perfectly fine for greasy food. There not competing in the gourmet burger market. If your looking for a decent casual greasy meal with a cool atmosphere then I recommend this place. I would go here before the Beacon Drive any day!

I love Big Wheel. I'm new to urbanspoon and I'm rather surprised at the negativity of this place. Also, many of the negative reviews I've read completely miss the point of Big Wheel Burger. Basic fast food with quality ingredients sourced with a 100-mile ethic and a strong commitment to composting and responsible energy use are all things that I will happily support. I usually get whatever burger is on special. The ghost burger made with ghost pepper hot sauce, jalapeños and Swiss cheese was delicious. Yesterday I tried The Big McNeil, a double cheeseburger modeled after the Big Mac but made with way better ingredients. It was huge, but I loved it even though I had to go home and have a nap to digest it all. It's one of the best fast food places around AND you can have a beer while you enjoy your burger.
Fat Boy
I feel sorry for these people who open restaurants in this town. I've never seem so many unhappy people on one sight. I tried their burgers and they were great . good work guys! Just ignore the haters they worship the corporates and pretend to support the locals but are just looking for their familiar taste of mac danalds
Morgan Felton
Well the lettuce was good. Thoroughly disappointed by this burger... have heard all the good things, and the bad and finally went to see for myself. Got the special called Guinness chedder and caramelized onions which sounds heavenly. The result.... mush.... mushy bun, sloppy patty.... and onions that had obviously been sitting in oil for well over an hour... mushy does NOT = caramelized.. <br/><br/>Will not be back.... EVER.... just saying... good job from someone who operates some of Victorias BEST burger shops. Yes its fast food but it doesnt have to be gross.Ill go to Mcdonalds when im craving this kinda burger and pay half as much.
Satan666
Disappointing and do not plan to ever eat their again. Burger was not that great, fries were alright and it was ridicouslessly expensive. Their is a lot of burger joints in this town that I would rather go too! Take this under advisement guys and change things up otherwise i wouldn't plan to be open very long especially with the competition in this city. It has a lot of promise but very disappointing for my first time eating there!!
SweetSaltySavory
Amazing amazing amazing! Best burger in town hands down.
Nomnomnom
Only ok. Chili cheese fries are appalling; mushy and awful. burg is edible, but i totally get the "ronald mcdonald went hipster and jacked up the price" that someone said earlier in this thread. nothing you couldn't get at mcdonald's/A&W/BK for half the price, and doesn't even come close to the likes of pink bicycle.
Talis
Disappointing. I figured I'd give them a shot as I walk by there several times a day. I don't eat beef, but I thought it was decent of them to have a Veggie burger on the menu. What I got however is not the type of thing that your average veggie burger ordering type would like. The patty was think and over seasoned. The center was cold and mushy, while the outside was greeasy and burned.<br/><br/>If I had ordered for there, I would have returned the food immediately, as it was a to-go order, 80% of it found its way into the garbage. Needless to say, I won't be back.
FakeNate
Expensive, burgers are good but not as good as the price suggests. Fries are terrible and milkshakes are small for their price. I've been there twice now and I won't return until they start some sort of daily special deal.
