Review Cafe Mexico - Victoria

Cory Jasper
This was my first visit to Cafe Mexico. The location and space itself are absolutely amazing and lots of fun. The bar is gorgeous, looking, and looks very well stocked. The menu is a very nice size, and the food that we did order was excellent and well portioned. Everything tasted very good and was also very well seasoned. Wait, staff was very helpful and attentive. We really didn't have to wait for anything... also the restaurant was very clean. Amazing, and thank you.

A nice place with tasty mexican food. I don't know how "authentic" mexican food can be out of Mexico but this place really tries. The place has nice furniture but atmosphere in general is fine, the only thing I thought wasn't good is the music. In general is a good place to have a drink and eat tasty food.

I dropped by to order take out after their cut off time for take out orders. Ari was very accommodating, helped me with choosing the dishes and the spicy sauces. Food was amazing, and it was only surpassed by the staff's service. Next time, I will try to dine in.

Best tacos I’ve ever had!! I got the tacos Mazatlan twice, they did not disappoint. Large, flavorful prawns in a tortilla with melted on cheese … yum🙌🙌🙌

Very good! The food was excellent, the chips were hot, and the salsa was tasty. The service was okay, but they were trying so I won’t fault them for that. I would come back again.

I went to cafe Mexico, they have authentic mexican food (I'm Mexican). Food is good, our server was good, she checked on us frequently and also gave us space. The best part is that they have Micheladas ❤️

Very satisfactory experience here. Had delicious Mexican food, the atmosphere and environment is very pleasing and homely. The customer service is top notch. I got the Tacos Mexicanos for myself and it tasted amazing with the habanero house made hot sauce that was given. Very positive experience and i can’t wait to eat here again. I am rating 4 stars because the prices were fairly high for the sizes of food, other than that amazing place

Very impressive Mexican restaurant. Delicious cocktails, margaritas of course, and very tasty food. Thankfully the chef allowed me to try three tacos; beef, chicken and pork. All very tasty though an extra tortilla would have great to finish off the decent portions. Churros were fresh and cooked perfectly. Highly recommend for an authentic Mexican meal in Victoria.

Great authentic Mexican cuisine. And the staff are really friendly. I got into a long conversation with the manager about how they make pulled pork. He even shared the recipe so I could try to replicate it at home -- and recommended a pretty fantastic cookbook. A great place.

Had a really enjoyable meal before going to the Barbie Movie.... Don't judge me. 😎 The food was Hot, it was tasty, came with good speed and at a decent price. The burrito was loaded with meat which many places seem to think they can scrimp on. The service was lame though. I see many young waiting staff just not very good at their job lately. Like a lot, but not all of course.... and when the debit machine starts the tip options at 18%. Food great, service meh. Maybe others will have better experiences. Maybe they will get cutlery. Maybe the waitress will return when waived.

We enjoy the happy hour tacos - their fillings are generous and they disappear way too quickly, but that’s only because they’re excellent!! The Queso fundido is one of our favourite things to get as well - full of flavour and very filling. Whenever we have been here the service has been great, the atmosphere bustling and the food amazing.

Great place to chill and hang out. We got the churros, Mexican rice, and classic margarita. Everything was good!

This place is amazing, beautiful decor and lively atmosphere. I visited it on Friday night and it was packed so we had to wait for a table. That have plenty of vegetarian options. Food arrived quickly and it was delicious. They have a lovely patio that overlooks the Market Square and plenty more tables inside. Service was attentive and fast. Highly recommended.

A little piece of México, you must order a real Mexican beer and Tequila. Start with the avocado and chips, the Baja tacos and Barbacoa, dont forget Carne Asada and ask for Nixtamal tortillas.

Great location, interesting interior and clean washrooms. Good selection of legitimate Mexican food and drinks. Good local beer selection too. I'll definitely be back soon.

Tacos are light and delicious. Atmosphere is comfy and intimate. Margheritas was blessed. Servers were gracious hosts. Take your friends, have fun, stop reading reviews already, jeez.

Great happy hour. The tortillas from Maiiz are a nice touch. Great selection of mezcals, too.

I vowed I would never eat Mexican outside of the southwest. I'm from Arizona, and I am a regular at all my local latin eateries. I got overruled on this one, but I was pleasantly surprised. Cafe Mexico combines traditional cuisine with unique local flavors, beautiful presentation, and large portions. We had the poutine mexicano. So delicious. I had tastes around the table and everything was good as well.

This place is now unfairly amazing! Was a fan back in the day but it's like a new place entirely - love the new brightness, menu revamp, the unbelievable cocktail program, including a massive variety of tequila and mezcal. They've kept some classics, but I'm a huge fan of the taco boards and the tapas style menu :-) Go and go now :-)

Went to Cafe Mexico last night! Haven't been there in years obviously because of the fire. This used to be my favourite restaurant when I was a kid! I was kind of disappointed to be honest.. You didn't have virgin margaritas which was disappointing for the kids! That used to be something we would enjoy. The drink menu for adults also wasn't very exciting, there wasn't much on it and it seemed very over-priced. I would suggest not using paper straws for drinks, because they eventually get soggy and stop working! We also used to get complimentary chips & salsa but I guess you guys don't do that anymore which was kind of a let-down. Also, for a Mexican restaurant I was very confused as to why you didn't have ANY hot sauce on the table?? That makes absolutely no sense to me. I had to ask for hot sauce and you don't even carry Tabasco or any types of Mexican hot sauce. The waitress brought me some in a little bowl. I think for a tip you need to provide at-least 3-4 different types of hot sauces in bottles on the table. The waitress was very nice which was great. I'm hoping things will change and get better or I'm not sure if I'd go back or recommend it.

1. Service was minimal. 2. Our waitress was NOT knowledgeable on the menu at all!! When asked about what certain items were she just made it up 3. They use to offer chips when you first sat. 4. The portion sizes have decreased. 5. The food was tasty but quality has gone down. 6. The only saving grace was the desert.

Very dissapointing!!!!! We were so excited to bring our family who recently moved to the Island for mexican food. Portions so small that i left hungry. We had to pay for chips and salsa and the salsa had no flavor as well as the meal i ordered. Atmosphere is totally different. Decor looks like it could be any type of restaurant. Very rude waitress who thought she was the best thing around. Not!!!! We will never go back and as a matter of fact my sister in law sent me a pic of them at a food kiosk the very next day saying "We felt like some real mexican food". Save your money and time. Too many other quality restaurants to visit.

Love the Cafe Mexico! The food is fantastic and it feels way more authentic then ever. If you love good Tequila and Mezcal then there is no better place in Victoria to have a drink. Highly recommend the margaritas and the empanadas are to die for!

Fantastic renovation, much more open concept with an authentic (but modern) feel and beautiful design. The food menu has had a much needed facelift and the bar team and their cocktail menu is one of the best in the city. They took a chance with all the changes - but with risk comes reward! Love going to Cafe Mexico!

We went today for my sisters birthday dinner and we were all very thoroughly disappointed. The food was mediocre at best, the service was weird, and the drinks were overpriced and subpar. My mom asked for a drink tall because she doesn't like strong drinks, I guess the bartender was pissed off when the drink was sent back (despite having already asked for it tall) and so Instead or actually making her a tall drink he just poured it into a tall cup.. so it was about 2/3 full. It was awful and we will not be going back.

This probably one of the coolest bars in Victoria right now. The service, drinks, and food are top notch! Loving the new concept of Cafe Mexico!

Went last night and it was amazing! It is definitely different from the old Cafe Mexico but it is so much nicer. I loved the old place and when I want that feel I will go to Cafe Mexigo. But the new Cafe Mexico feels very upscale and the food was amazing. Our server was also fantastic. My new favourite place.

Oh yeah! I just found my new spot, food and drinks are on point! Love the atmosphere.

WIfe and i went to lunch last summer....first time since the re opening. It used to be on of our favorite places. We got there early...the place was less than half full. A gent met us at the door and walked us back to the back right beside the rear exit. We couldnt believe it....empty seats all over the place and he sits us by the open back door. We requested another table. He picked out our menu and motioned us to follow him. Without looking back at us he walked past a booth, dropped the menu on the table and kept walking. So rude. Never even looked back at us just walked away....so insulting....Wish i knew his name...could have been a manager....tall guy with short hair.

Came for Mexican food, menu was 3/4 Tapas. I want my damn Taco/Enchilada combo back. Also, a Mexican restaurant charging for chips and salsa is like an Italian place charging for breadsticks. Stingy.

I thought Cafe Mexico was amazing! Knowledgeable bartenders, nice staff, food is amazing and I've never waited an overly long time for any thing. I have started coming here a few times a week as I find it has a little bit of everything I like in an establishment. Good kick off guys!

Great food great service can't wait to go back. I will highly recommend this place to friends and family

Good decoration, the place looks awesome, the staff is really kind but the food its very bad (if you want to say "it's mexican food" because it's NOT). I am sorry but I am from Mexico and I know what I am talking about! So, try to google the recipes, will helps, for sure...

Ok so I'm officially hooked!!! The drinks, the amazing food & the great staff! Everything is so flavourful & they always make our experience above & beyond anything that my friends & me have experienced & let me tell you I'm a bit high maintenance so glad to have such a great team & this tasty gem in this beautiful city! About time a restaurant cared about their patrons experience! I'll be back over & over & over!!!

We came here for my birthday tonight and I really loved the food! I would have ordered more drinks but we never saw our server! We kept getting incorrect orders and they never came around to check. It was really unfortunate because everything was so good that we wanted more ☹️

So we have eaten here a bunch of times over the last 4 or so months and have really enjoyed our meals..... Until recently. They just changed the chef, and he changed almost the entire menu as a result, and the food has gone down hill severely. It wasn't bad on our last visit, but it wasn't great either. Bland, flavourless, very oily, poor flavour/textural combos. The price isn't terrible for what you get, but the food is just average, at best.

The margaritas are pretty good though.

Genuinely disappointing turn on what was becoming one of our favourite spots to eat... We won't be coming back anytime soon.

I just had the worst dinning experience of my life, at my previously favourite restaurant. Wrong food, terrible service, awfully prepared drinks, and to top it all off a mouse ran under my table while I was eating. 10/10 never returning to this restaurant again.
Lovefood
The services is good, no problem there. The food was disappointing though. We ate at this restaurant frequently prior to the fire. We recently went in for dinner and it was bland. The fajitas were bland and the chimis were underfilled with chicken but overfilled with rice and were also bland. We loved this place, but now we'll skip it. It also feels more like a bar now than a restaurant; not impressed.

Recently renovated and refreshed after a devastating fire gutted the restaurant. Cafe Mexico has made a huge comeback!! Enjoyed an evening with family and we were all very impressed with the quality of our food. Fresh, flavourful and filling. The burritos are large and scrumptious; I especially enjoyed the Market Veggie. The chimichanga was a favourite at our table too. Lots of care and attention with house made sauces, sides and tortillas. The upside-down pineapple cake with ice cream is delicious. Setting is very nice too and service was great. No reservations for tables under 8 so expect a bit of a wait. Prices are mid-range and comparable to but way better than those chain restaurants ($40 for appy + 2 mains). Open late so busy.

We had an amazing time at the bar of Café Mexico. Our bartender was nice and tentative, although I wondered whether he really was listening to us when he asked if he could take our plates away and whether we wanted dessert. Minor details aside, the food was amazing and the menu was vegetarian-friendly for my dining partner. It's always a struggle finding someplace with enough meat and meat-less variety. Their sangrias are amazing too - I look forward to going back and trying their other concoctions. This was my first visit post-renovation and I love what they did to spice up the place. It's got a nicer atmosphere, less tacky, and a great place to go for late night eats. Three thumbs up.

This place was stellar. I went on NYE at 5:30 with my parents, husband and teenage son, and we were treated superb. My parents--From Victoria--took us, at my Californian husband's request for "Mexican". Being from Winnipeg, authentic Mexican is now hard to come by there. Foodies themselves, my parents noted the second story was gone since the fire, and the menu has changed and could now be distinguished as tapas (apparently the original menu had lower prices and larger portions). As first time guests, we enjoyed it. The food was exceptional and unique, as was the service. I'll be back, when in town! ♡
