Good Value for Money. Food portions and quality is very good for the prices! Would Reccommend!
Chinese Comfort Food. My friend and I had to do a pick up nearby, so I suggested the Penny Restaurant (Gold Penny Restaurant) on East Hastings. I've been there before, many years ago and remembered the food as good.
We both ordered Combo's for One - E and F. Both were excellent, plates piled high with food. My Chop Suey was a little over-cooked and mushy, but tasty none the less. My Almond Chicken was done to perfection.
I just uploaded new photos of the menu here as the ones that were here were badly out of date. Prices have changed considerably since the old menus were used!
It is great to see a Chinese restaurant with lots of options for single diners. I hate having to order too much food just to get a balanced meal.
All in all, good food, reasonable prices, and lots of choices.
UPDATE - FEB. 8/'14 - It seems that my photos of the new menu have been replaced by photos of the old menu from 2009 - Note that prices have increased since then! -
Westernized Chinese food and opens late. Service is good. Food quality is average. The ambiance isn't the best but you can't go wrong with the price.
Crispy Chow Meins. If I get a hankering for "Westernized" Chinese food, I go to Pennys. Their chow meins are nice and crispy. They have soft ones too, so don't forget to specify. I love it when the sauce soaks in and it gets half crispy and half soggy.
Foodrebuttal.com Recommendation: Chinese version of a family diner i.e. comfort Chinese food.
Great neighborhood place!. Great down to earth well prepared Chinese dishes. Great price. Very sincere service, even tough sometimes the room can be too busy for just a couple of servers. We dine there and order takeout once or twice a week.
Good food, but cheep staff. I work in the area, both afternoons and evenings, so having this place open late makes a nice alternative to McDonald's or BurgerKing. My BIG and ONLY complaint about this place is that they are DAMN CHEAP!
On take out orders, they are CONSTANTLY neglecting to give me utencils (like a spoon for my soup) or include stuff like soy sauce. I know that a few of my coworkers are also quiet angered by this. Make sure you demand your extras or they just won't give them to you.
Awsome food. Its open late which is awesome i wasnt sure how there food would be i tried it for the first time considering it was the only place that was open at 1am in the morning...and let me tell you there food was delicious its cheap and there delivery service is fast!!!
Very good food and exceptional service. Good food, great service and very good people. It is a very warm and caring feeling you get when you go there, I love it.
Good, cheap food. It used to be be open 24hrs but now closing around 3am The Penny makes for a good place to go after a long day or a hard a hard core party session.
The decor is a lot to be desired but when overlooked the food is always served hot, quickly and in good portion sizes. The staff are honest 'get on with it' people (family run?). If you speak Cantonese it helps but isn't vital - it just helps you customize your meal a little.
The wide selection of congee, meat dishes and noodle assortments are usually available with the odd "sorry! no more today" on certain items.
The prices are more than fair for the food quality and service. Take out is available.
The Penny is more than happy to feed 1 - 10 people in one sitting.
The Penny restaurant shouldn't be judged by its cover. The food is good, filling and cheap.
Great inexpensive food, open late.
