Vietnam House didn’t sound familiar to me, but when I googled it, I remember it used to a hole in the wall called Thai Hang. Thai Hang had been around for ages… I went as a kid and in high school as well. Looking at pictures, it seems like they went through a renovation in addition to the name change.
I'm a huge fan of Vietnamese cuisine and this place does justice to it. I especially love the pho and their juices. The lychee on ice was lovely.
This place has been around forever. The broken rice dishes are actually broken rice and not plain jasmine rice. The Bo Hue looks spicy but is actually isn’t and has so much flavour and ingredients in it. Duck in a Vietnamese restaurant? Well this one has it and it’s simple and delicious. To finish off the meal they even give you a hot sweet soup dessert. Yum. Wish it had a nicer decor, but at these prices, it’s okay. Take out is packed with care so enjoy at home on a cold wet Vancouver night.
We (my family and many friends) have been long time customers with Vietnam House Restaurant, since it was still owned under the name: Thai Hung Vietnam Restaurant. I believe the waitress, at the time of Thai Hung Vietnam, took over the restaurant and named Vietnam House Restaurant. She is currently the owner, and working as the kitchen chef, just like how the wife of old Thai Hung owner worked in the kitchen.
Anyway, on the food, we love their pho, their noodles and their rice combos. At the old time, they were the only Vietnam restaurant uses the particular type of pho noodles. We enjoyed their lemon grass pork chop, or chicken for all those chicken lover. We enjoyed their rare slice beef pho noodles... many more other menu items.
Their services are friendly and generally reasonable on greeting and others. We met few different waiters and waitress throughout the decades. Some staffs are more friendly than others, and some staffs are slightly cold on the attitude. We particularly enjoy the current waitress and the current owner (when she was still waitress)
We would give a 5 stars, but the tastes lately have been changing inconsistently . Sometimes, too salty, sometimes, less fresh, sometime, everything is good, and sometimes nothing is the same. We hope they would continue to work the consistency of food tastes, as the tastes have been generally consistent for past 10 years. But again, we do understand the fact of all ingredients costs increase, so substitute expensive ones with cheap ones is definitely business interests.
Hopefully, the food tastes can return to consistent level. Nevertheless, we will continue to enjoy Vietnam House Restaurant until it is probably closed in the future or if we move out Vancouver.
I love love LOVE their Lemongrass Chicken. From the very first time I had it, I haven't ordered or tried anything else on all the other visits after. It's flavorful, tasty, juicy... always comes out fresh from the grill. Good quality chicken.
Really great! Whenwe are done and ready to go, waitress Offered dessert. Love it! The noodle has way more ingredients than what's offered in Coquitlam.
Good service. The woman that usually serves my boyfriend and I always greets us with a smile and asks me how I am. The pho is delicious and everything is so cheap!! =)
FOOD is soo delicous, best in town. Service is GREAT, no complaints, the staff are very friendly. The best pho ive ever eaten, and ive been to alot of vietnamese restaurants and this is by far the best. I reccomond for anyone to try this because i love this place and more customers would help in the longevity of its staying
Best Specialty Noodle Soups. I have been a recurring customer of Thai Hang for the past 5 years. Everything that I have ordered there has been top notch, from quality to quantity. Best of all, this restaurant doesn't even tack on taxes to your meal.
Thai Hang is a rare Vietnamese restaurant in Vancouver that offers individual rice dishes and rice noodle combos, where you can get a pop, iced coffee, or spring roll for an extra dollar or two.
Now, like my title suggests, this restaurant isn't known for their Pho. It's not the best, nor even great, I'd say it's decent. In my opinion, Thai Hang's area of specialty would be their Dry Vermicelli Noodles, Bo Kho (Beef Brisket Noodle Soup), Bun Bo Hue (Spicy Vermicelli Noodle Soup), and their rice dishes (Lemongrass Chicken, Pork Chop, Short-ribs, etc). These may be only a few dishes, but they make them very well, and what keeps me coming back.
If you walk into Thai Hang expecting to get a GREAT bowl of Pho, then you will surely walk out feeling disappointed. Stick to what their good at, then you will surely become a regular customer, like me.
I'll Be Back. The over powering moth ball odour on entering this restaurant is a bit off putting. The food however is very good. I've probably eaten in 30 different Pho places since my addiction took firm hold of me a few years ago and I have never struggled with the problem of "too much beef" - until now.
A generous portion of good quality rare beef was served raw and cooked itself in the very hot broth. Noodles were done under al dente so that they were not a starchy mushy mass by the end of the operation. The beef broth was very tasty and I did not drift into a MSG induced coma afterwards. Oh and they have all these handy combo deals so you can get a large bowl of Pho (any one) and a tasty spring roll for $8.00. Cash only.
