Originally Grayson and I were planning on going for Korean food but the restaurant we wanted to go to was packed and being the super hungry people we were, we decided to opt out of waiting for an hour to be seated. So we got back into the car and simply drove until something caught our eye and Indochine did just that with its HUGE banner and awning.
This is gotta be my favorite meal in YVR. Just EXOTIC! The butter beef is definitely not traditonal but definotely a chefs created dish. The sauce was complex with the high note of fish sauce sweetness, that was grounded by the tanginess of another flavour that i dont know what it is. The sweet tang was rounded out for a 2nd wave a palette orgasm with fresh cilantro and dr@ied onion. People who think phom penhs butter beef is good ( i dont think it is) will abandon it for this version. Well done!!
Papaya salad is usually NOTHING special but they knock it out of the parl with this master created sauce. It taste freshly made and vibrant. Whoever makes the sauces here has mastered the elegant balance of sweet, salty, and tang. The added beef jerky further flayers the flavour with smokieness and added mouth feel contrast of a chewiness that compliments well with the crunchiness of the papaya.
Laksa, taste pretty traditonal but im not 100% sure due to my lack of experience with it. Soup was creamy without being salty like most crappy laksa, it had hints of citrus tickling your taste buds in the lagoon of creaminess coconut broth with the final bootie spanker of spiciness( immigrant level, caucasions beware) the fresh viet herb added an anchoviness that politely cuts through the cream, citrus of this dish.
Its been a while since ive had a meal with this much UMAMI!! Well done, but on the low notes your beer menu is TERRIBLE. Id come for the food but I wouldnt disrespect my body with that beer selection.
If you're craving Phnom Penh chicken wings and don't want to wait a long time... this is the place! I love their Garlic Butter Chicken wings. I actually like them better than the ones at Phnom Penh. These ones have more of a kick to it. Bonus: half price wings on Wednesdays.
Another favourite is the Black Pepper poutine. I MUST order this every time. Absolutely delicious. And their Butter Beef Carpaccio: identical to Phnom Penh! Wasn't a huge fan of the sriracha wings though. Mango salad was perfect! Loved it.
Good food and an excellent substitute for Phnom Penh if you don't feel like heading to a sketch Chinatown at night. Ordered the butter beef, chicken wings, red curry, chicken vermicelli in soup and the thit kho and everything was delicious! I'm giving it a 4 because the service was so poor and slow.
When relatives come to visit, we make sure to include Phnom Penh in our list. However, because the location is less accessible by transit, we alert them to an alternative: Indochine, PP's younger sister on East Broadway.
Hands down one of my top restaurants in Vancouver for both flavor and price, the menu offers similar dishes to PP, with a more bar like atmosphere. (which is the only downside for me)
Food/Drink: Having been here a few times, I haven't been disappointed yet. Butter Beef Carpaccio is a light and yummy tapa to start with. The thinly sliced beef coated in a light, citrus Vietnamese vinaigrette makes for a perfect chopstick war. The Garlic Butter Chicken wings is another must get. Priced at 11 dollars, it is a bit more expensive than other wings. However, the meat is substantial and is as succulent as it is crisp and perfectly fried. They give you a vinegar dipping sauce that'll bring out the flavours as well!
For entrees, the Beef Luc Lac ($11.5) is sweet and flavourful and pairs really well with the tomato fried rice. An additional dollar for a fried egg. Do yourself a favor and get that egg.
Ambience: While Phnom Penh is an assuming restaurant with big round tables similar to traditional chinese restaurants, Indochine is in the tradition of a sports bar with huge tv screens. If you're up for a game, good food and some drinks, it's the place for you. Honestly, it's not my fave aesthetic, but the food makes up for it.
Service: I don't remember it being anything amazing nor was it horrible. Pretty good service and quick food.
Transport: It's located on East Broadway and Ontario Street. From UBC, take the 99 Comm'l-Broadway Station bus and stop at Main St. Walk back about 4 mins and you'll hit it.
Great place for drinks with a friend or a few friends. I recommend making a reservation on the weekends. Great drink specials daily. Everything from highballs to pitchers of beer. Chicken wings are a must order with every meal.
Beef luc lac. Came here on a Wednesday with two friends. I did notice the "rowdy" crowd that consisted mostly of three large groups... but I was here more for the food so I couldn't care less. The beef luc lac was AMAZING. Rarely do I go to a restaurant and rave about a dish or think about it nonstop the next day... this dish was one of those times. So goood, I could barely finish it because there was so much food.
My friend ordered a papaya salad which was tasty enough that my other friend ordered one to go. We also shared the garlic butter wings since it was half price wings night. They were tasty and spicy, good tasting but nothing that I would pay full price for.... Wednesday is the only time I will be eating these babies!
Indo-credible. Indochine has been one of my go to restaurants as of late for lunch and dinner. If you're ever in the market for "Asian comfort food", this is definitely a trip your taste buds will appreciate!
A definition of comfort food would generally encompass a sense of tradition mixed with nostalgic appeal. Although infused with a hint modernity, Indo's traditional Southeast Asian cuisines can be found all over town, at your famous neighbourhood Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Chinese restaurants such as Phenom Penh etc...However, if you've had the opportunity to eat at many of these restaurants then you would notice the lack of care and attention that's provided beyond the food, such as the ambiance, cleanliness, and service.
This is where Indo-SHINES above and beyond the rest of the competition. The servers are very friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating; the ambiance is romanticizing, exuding a sense of peace and calm set within a backdrop of sophistication; while the cleanliness of the restaurant and its washrooms which offer complimentary grooming and hygienic products would impress Mr. Clean himself!
The best of both worlds with daily and happy hour specials such as wings Wednesdays for example, Indochine Kitchen is also accompanied with a full bar, filled with fun, and exotic cocktails, wines, and beers! The prices are very competitive, the service is great, the restaurant is contemporary fun mixed with elegance, and the food is definitely what kept me coming back for more!
Just give it a shot, you won't be disappointed!
Delicious food and great service!. I have been to Indochine a few times now and have to disagree with some of the reviews left by other users. My friends and I have eaten at the restaurant during the soft opening taster menu and just recently with their full regular menu and it was all very good! I will admit that their garlic butter chicken wings are much better now than during the soft opening taster menu and same goes for their laksa. The prices are reasonable and the service each time I've been there has been great! My fave menu items include the beef and lime carpaccio, garlic butter chicken wings and beef luc lac.
For sure it gets a little rowdy later at night on the weekends but i went on a thursday night around 8pm and found that it was a pleasant restaurant and the crowd quite diverse (post work diners, older couple and younger girl group). So I guess you have to ask yourself, do you want to have a quiet dinner or not, before you try and go to Indochine on the weekend.
All in all, I really like this lovely new restaurant with its delicious food and great service!
