Okonomiyaki! Osaka-style.
Delicious and lots of cabbage and sizzling flavor. The okonomiyaki is definitely a must-eat item here.
The rest of the food is top notch quality and taste. Delicately fried potato croquettes, fresh sashimi, sushi rolls, etc.. Service is pleasant, and the restaurant itself is not very large.
But, definitely get the okonomiyaki.
Delicious sushi! But on the pricier side. I really enjoyed the special rolls they had here. If you’re in the area, definitely check them out!
Amazing sushi. Visiting from Toronto and were hungry and passed by this place and saw it had pretty good reviews via google maps. Didn't disappoint. Fresh, delicious sushi. Try the following maki: sockeye salmon, spicy salmon, dynamite, tuna & avocado, and Stanley park. The miso soup was nice and hot. Highly recommend.
Pretty authentic Japanese eatery, and the interior is quite bright and inviting with their recent remodel. Atmosphere is quiet and relaxing and large windows give an airy feeling. I can't recommend the okonomiyaki enough; it's just like the kind I have at home. It certainly beats the okonomiyaki at other joints, and comes in an actually reasonable portion. Other entreé items are quite decent, and there are many minor touches that are omitted at other Japanese eateries which they include. They use the right kind of rice, which isn't as long as some of the worse hybrid short-grain types they use at cheaper places. Staff also speak Japanese so that is a plus.
I recommend this restaurant to eat Japanese pancakes. I'm from Japan, and I've eaten Japanese pancakes many times. It's totally the same taste as Japanese one. If u wanna eat REAL Japanese food, I recommend there :)) However, it takes a long time to make Japanese cakes.
When I'm at school, I usually eat along West Broadway...I rarely venture to the opposite end of UBC (along Dunbar) because the commute's longer! Since I had a bit of free time the other day, I decided to make the trek out to Dunbar to see what restaurants they had to offer!. The options were slim: a couple of sushi places, a pub, a pizza shop, and a subway. I decided to go with Kuma because resident sushi master Raymond, recently gave it the thumbs up...hi Raymond!! *waves*
I went in there and ordered my usual - a chirashi don!! Come to think of it, I haven't had a chirashi in SO long!! I use to be obsessed with chirashis... I would eat 'em every week!! ;)

The Saba Nigiri was not too salty and demonstrated an excellent fish-to-rice ratio. However, I have had softer saba in the past. The Sockeye Salmon Nigiri was the best of the bunch, and it was very fresh, smooth, and deliciously juicy. The Toro Nigiri was also fresh and not fishy, and had a nice creamy flavour along with a soft texture.
A small restaurant with friendly staff! I loved how I was greeted with a smile! Most of their customers also appear like regulars - asking about their day, noticing the waitress' new haircut. The decor was a bit old but it didn't appear dirty.
I ordered the unagi (BBQ eel) bento and appetizer sashimi.
The unagi bento was quite normal, came with miso soup, rice, salad, tempura, 4 pieces of California roll, 3 standard sized unagi strips. Nothing special. Tasted okay. 3.5/5
The appetizer sashimi was presented beautifully!!! Cut nicely and the size was reasonable for the price. There are 3 pieces of tuna and 2 pieces of salmon. Tasted fresh, not frozen or soggy. This dish I would order again! 4.5/5
Ultimately, the friendly staff and beautiful sashimi had made this a pleasant experience :)
The freshness of the fish can be hit or miss, but the deep fried items or items off the grill are pretty good. The okonomiyaki gets a pass, but few places in Vancouver actually do it and serve it on a hot plate. Be warned that it can get pretty hot in there because there's no air conditioning, and the cleanliness can be an issue because everything (especially the menus) seem a little sticky or worn. The rolls are big and generally pretty good and the prices are reasonable. It's a decent sushi joint.
Okonomi-yaki is real jam!. You might want to hurry up if you would like to dine here at this okonomi-yaki place. But good thing is their okonomi-yaki is real jam!! The quality of other your ordinary Japanese food can be sparse sometimes but overall great. Their party treys are one of the better ones I have around the block, and Dragon Rolls (Tempura, Avocado, Cream cheese, and BBQd Eel) and Fire Fighter Rolls (Yea!! spicy Tuna with house special sauce in FRIED rolls) are sure crowd pleasers. The service is fairly attentive. Well worth the trip from Downtown!
