Michele Cake Shop is a long standing Chinese Bakery in Kerrisdale. Many considered them to be the best Chinese bakery. That may have been changed as newer trendy bakery opens over the years. Michele Cake Shop still provide baked goods much superior than many Chinese bakery franchise. Strength: Individually owned, really good egg tarts and cake
This is a Chinese/Asian-style bakery in Kerrisdale that make a good selection of cakes, as well as buns and pastries. For my visit, I stuck to just their sweets, and got their Tiramisu, Michele Cheesecake, Chocolate Cake, and Portuguese Tart. Now, I'm generally not the biggest fan of Asian-style cakes, but I really enjoyed theirs; they are tasty and flavourful while still retaining the lighter, milder tastes associated with Asian-style desserts. The prices are a bit on the higher side for an Asian-style bakery, but I think it's quite reasonable given the quality of their desserts. Whether you like Asian-style sweets or not, I highly recommend giving this place a try.
Portugese Tart ($1.75):
4/5
This is similar to a regular egg tart, except that the top is bruleed/caramelized. The crust was a bit bland, but quite tender and flaky. I quite liked the egg custard, which was smooth, mildly sweet, and had a pleasant eggy fragrance. I actually prefer this over the ones from Marui as it is a bit more flavourful (without being overly sweet).
Tiramisu ($3.99):
4.5/5
This consisted of layers of coffee sponge cake sandwiching coffee mousse. This is a fantastic rendition of the dessert. The cake was soft and light while the mousse was smooth and airy, with a wonderful bitter-sweet flavour. The cake also had a fantastic fragrance of coffee liquor.
Michele Cheesecake ($3.50):
4.5/5
This consisted of a layer of fluffier, Asian-style cheesecake on top of another layer of denser, more Western-style cheesecake. The top layer was light and fluffy with a nice citrusy fragrance, while the bottom was richer, creamier, and had a wonderful tang. This is seriously the best of both worlds.
Chocolate Cake ($2.75):
3.5/5
This was made up of layers of chocolate sponge cake and chocolate cream, and decorated with a small cream puff. Again, the cake was very fluffy and light. I personally found the chocolate/cocoa flavour to be a bit too weak. I also didn't really care for the cream puff, which was bland and had a slightly oily texture, although it was quite a nice decoration.
Sometimes I miss the hk-styled bread very much. And I tried a lot of bakery in Vancouver.
Michele is the only one I recommended.
It can keep the hk-styled taste profile with Canadian good-quality ingredients (Bread items).
I visited its store many years ago in Richmond (it was closed) and i kept it VIP card for many many years.
I am happy to find its shop again which is near to my new home.
Mrs Liu’s Choice: 肉鬆腸仔包
It's the best I have try so far. Good quality, clean and tasty. Love it:)
MANGO CAKE. Fabulous mango cake! Nothing beats this light/airy sponge cake and fresh mangoes. My family has been buying their cakes, stuffed buns, and white bread (excellent for sandwiches) for more than 7 years. Always consistent.
I agree - its a bit pricey but their egg tart is a must-try.
Delicious cakes and breads made fresh! I especially heart their Portuguese egg tarts!
The best portugese egg tarts!. I've been coming here for years. They have the best portugese egg tarts. All the other pastries, like the cake slices are very good as well. It's a small place and when you come in you take a number, it can get quite busy at times. It is a bit expensive but you can tell they use quality ingredients.
This is the best cake/pastry shop around my area. Their food is always fresh and tastes really great. They're pretty busy at most times. Definitely a place to try out.
Like most of the other cakes I’ve bought from Michele’s, the tiramisu was light and airy. I especially liked the substitute of the coffee sponge layer instead of the traditional lady fingers. My parents also enjoyed the fact that it was subtly sweet. I’m glad to say that the entire cake was finished by us three! :) * ~ Happy Birthday Mom! :) ~ *
