I write this review with a glowing belly full of Hai Phong’s #36 – chicken with (thin) vermicelli in curry soup. The dish is full of flavour, generous amounts of meat, served with a side of veg and herbs. Five stars as far as satisfying soup on a cold day goes. It is a classically casual atmosphere however. This spot off Kingsway is one of my go-to‘s in Vancouver’s Little Saigon.
Love this place. Have the chicken wings. I brought relatives from HK to eat here today and they said better than any place in HK! So good.. best noodle soups too
I love this place so much. Their soup and broth is clear and just tasty! It doesn't taste unnatural like other places and their meat is sooo good. Even their lemongrass pork and chicken is the best, even comes with a small bowl of broth which is the best! The service is great too, one particular waitress is understanding and quick with the orders!
Best pho I’ve had in a long time. Good service even when busy. Large room with lots of tables so you can usually find a spot.
To those who criticize reviews by pho lovers.... it’s a free world. It’s winter and I want a great soup. So I’m often here for pho. Period.
TL;DR awesome broth and selection, a must try for pho lovers!
I finally stopped by this place on Kingsway on a Sunday. It was already fairly busy at 11 before the
church goers came through.
I had the pho with steak and beef brisket. It was absolutely fantastic! The broth was light and clear, it wasn't drowned in MSG so I wasn't desperately grabbing for water. The brisket was amazing, it was very tender and flavorful.
Can't wait to to go back again!
○decent service
○Good food/ we usually go here for tamarind crab / shrimp and if they ran out they're willing to make it for you if u buy the crab/ their rare beef is good too
○family friendly
○Good price for quality and quantity
○if I had to choose 1 dish : tamarind crab
○would i go back? Yes
Finding a new and unique Vietnamese restaurant to try is always hard because everything tends to be the same everywhere you go. I mean you have your beef noodle soup, your salad roll, your grilled protein with broken rice dish…you know what I mean?. So when I heard about Hai Phong, I jumped at the opportunity to try it out!
One of the best Vietnamese restaurants in Vancouver. They have a wide selection of dishes, including my favourite, water spinach/ong choy/morning glory. To my knowledge, this is one of the only places that serve this dish year round, and for this sole reason it is worth a visit. The other dishes which I have tried were also very good.
I find it ridiculous that people base their entire review on one dish.
I've been going to Hai Phong for a while and have to say, they are without a doubt my favorite. The food is amazing as is the service. Also the tables aren't tiny like some restaurants. All in all a good experience with the great food. I'll be a lifer.
Fresh and full flavours.exciting presentations on the plates. Menu was more interesting than your typical Vietnamese joint. Exceptional value for money.
I really wish people would just know what real food is and order specialties in-house rather then wings and plain beef pho and shit.
K when you come here order the viet spicy hotpot (thai style) for two. It's amazing!!! This is my usual with my gf and seriously it's so good. There's a sweetness to the broth and yes you can certainly drink it. Comes with a side dipping sauce (fish sauce and chillies).
There is also a dish that's a egg crepe with veggies. You stuff the egg and veggies with mint and basil into the lettuce and roll. Dip it into the sauce and BAM. Now give me a review after those two items to start off with. Not some lame ass Oh I had the chicken wings and beef pho and no on the siracha... Child please people who post things like that can overhype one thing or put down another restaurant in great ratings.
I was a former first cook, Jr sous, Sr sous, head chef, retired.
Came in because of a posting that said this was voted one of the best Pho restaurants, The wings sounded good, so we got a full order of garlic chicken wings, after dipping it in lemon water juice mixed with some kind of spice/MSG, (came with the wings) there isn't really any butter or much garlic left. I personally liked them better without the wings dip. The Pho special came next, not much toppings but when you eat Pho, it's all about the broth. Don't ruin it with that sriracha and hoisin sauce. The chef spent hours boiling it down and readjusting until just right. Dip your meat in the sriracha and hoisin and eat it. At least, the broth was good.
Ordered take-out and it was ready in 10 minutes -- the time it took to walk there. Already a plus!
The spring rolls were delightful, and the grilled pork skewer & pork patty were very tasty. There was a nice array of your typical vermicelli bowl ingredients, and ample vermicelli which I find a lot of restaurants out here seem to lack. I'd definitely come back!
The original location, compared to their smaller 'express' version in Tinseltown.
The signature, must-eat is their crab with a house sauce that's half sweet, half sour. Finger licking good.
Good service considering the manpower.
Free parking.
Washrooms can be cleaner. Then again, your classic hole in the wall but sometimes these are the places with real food haha.

My second post on a Vietnamese restaurant! This restaurant is located on Kingsway and Knight. I am pretty much a regular at this establishment because of their menu! It consist of many items that are not available at other Vietnamese restaurants. Along with Pho, vermicelli and rice dishes like other regular Vietnamese restaurants offer, they have what I like to call “home style” Vietnamese food, which are things like: Cá Kho Tộ (caramel braised fish), Tôm Rang Mặn (salted caramel shrimp) and Canh Chua (Vietnamese hot and sour soup). For being a regular patron for about 2 years, it was actually my first time having their spring rolls. I was pleasantly surprised, they were pretty good! I like the egg wraps better than the rice paper wraps, so this was right up my alley! It was nice, crisp on the outside with a soft centre! It paired well with the sweet dipping fish sauce. We also got this for an appetizer which was AMAZING! I had to put it in capitals to captivate how good it was! I am really into rare beef so when I saw it on the menu, it was a must! They call it Beef Sashimi. It’s some thinly sliced lean beef with sliced onions, marinated in a little bit of lemon I believe. Its garnished with roasted peanuts, fried shallots and Vietnamese coriander. The dipping sauce is some sort of soy sauce and fish sauce mix. This dish has to be one of my favourites! I have to stop myself from ordering it every time I go, I’m sure that much raw beef isn’t good for you! Another item that I get pretty regularly is the Bun Rieu. This noodle soup is not usually at other Vietnamese restaurants and when I do see it at other restaurants it’s usually not as good. Its a crab and tomato based soup. Think of it as a consommé, when they make a raft out of eggs and meat, but this soup actually keeps the raft as a main part of the dish and flavours it with spices! This soup has always been my favourite ever since I was young! My mom still makes it for me every time I go back home to visit. The
PHO. I came here twice and the great service is decent and the pho is very tasty the price is around $8-10 but the spring rolls is cheap and its so good YOU must try it for yourself before saying anything.
Good noodles. Pretty spacey for a Vietnamese restaurant. Had the Special Dry Noodles which was good, the spring rolls didn't use the Vietnamese style skin so it isn't to my liking since it's more like Chinese style.
Had some free soup and pickled veggies so that's a plus too.
Great Corporate Lunch Idea. We get our lunches catered in when our office feels like Vietnamese. The Chau family takes their quality of food very seriously. I would highly reccomend trying their catered food as well as going to dine in.
Fav .. I was in Vancouver for a week, and i came here literally 7 days in a row . Food is so so so good ! I don't even remember how the service was because the food was so good . I will come here every single time i'm in town . Highly, highly recommended for vietnamese food .
Delicious pho and the chicken wings.were vreat! Everythi.g we ordered was so tasty. Definitely will be going tbere again
Pretty good.. This place is good. very attentive and values all customers. may be a bit short staffed, but otherwise they try to attend to everyone quickly.
the food is great! had some viet style raw beef it looked a bit gross and messy, but it tasted great with the sauce.
the dry rice noodle pho is very tasty and somewhat Cambodian styled, with a soured daikon side dish for you to munch on.
this place is awesome. quick service, delicious food, relatively decent priced, not too expensive.
Good soup base. The portion was reasonable. The restaurant looked clean. The price was comparable. They have this pho in which they use crab to make. Very tasty! A chef recommendation. Fyi, There is plenty of parking in the lot. Overall experience: Thumb's up
Beef noodles in soup is very good!. We tried the beef noodles in soup and it was very good! We also ordered a bowl of dry noodles and well, we can honestly say it didn't have much on it. There was just one quail egg and 2 pieces of shrimp and some pieces of liver . I've had this same dish at another Viet restaurant on Hastings which had more than double the amount of toppings. However, it was quite tasty. I loved the pork bone soup on the side that came with the noodles. That was very sweet, maybe it had white radish in it. The pork and shrimp rolls wasn't as good compared to the other place. We also ordered the grilled pork chop with steam egg and rice and the pork was quite dry and hard. The egg pie was nice and the broken rice was something different from regular white rice served in other places. We will definitely be back to try other things on the menu as there are a lot of varieties here.
My new fav pho place. We decided to come here especially to try their "special dry noodle", thinking whether there can be a replacement for Phnom Penh. To our surprise, it was pretty similar..although not exactly the same. Difference: little on sweeter side, more soy sauce, less shallots/garlic. Not quite as 'tasty' as Phnom Penh...but still very good. The ingredients are also very generous - pig's heart, pig stomach, prawns, two quail eggs, pork slices, bean-sprouts and lettuce. Our friend ordered the lemongrass pork chop rice - he said it was really good too, rice was vietnamese rice and not chinese rice. It also came with some shredded pork skin.
Setting: fairly clean. Lots of tables. T.V.'s. Service - food came pretty fast.
Would def. go again!
Delicious Broth. This is the only place I come for pho. I always want to try something new, like the dinner rice dishes, but I always end up getting pho. The broth is delicious. The meat/fish/shrimp is great. The noodles are plentiful. So much flavour! I bring my friends here all the time.
Not Bad. Clean interior, good service, nice decor, food so-so...wouldn't go back again. Rate 5/10
Huge selection of dishes that include many traditional ones. Bun bo hue (red soup) is my favorite. Cleaner than most vietnamese restaurants and has parking.
Clean and Friendly. For some pho joints, having a clean interior and friendly staff can be hard to come by. Hai Phong features a neat setup and attentive staff. The shrimp and pork salad rolls were fresh, tasty, and reasonably priced. While the real reason for our visit (their favourably reviewed pho) didn't knock my socks off (broth was underwhelming, but quality of ingredients were good), I will re-visit to sample other menu items.
Cold weather seems like the ideal time for a warm bowl of pho. This is a large bowl of rice vermicelli noodles, bathed in beef broth (prepared with roasted onions and roasted ginger, anise and cinnamon, seasoned with fish sauce), garnished with scallions and thinly sliced white onions. It’s served with fresh blanched bean sprouts, and southeast asian basil.
...The broth was very sweet and the noodles perfect. The bamboo shoots were of the dehydrated variety so the texture was interesting - not quite crunchy but not quite tough but an odd mix of both
Fittingly, the theme was "food in your community" set in this family run Vietnamese dining establishment
The Garlic Butter Chicken Wings 炸雞翼 (Canh Ga Chien) were well marinated, fried, then tossed with butter and garlic. The texture wasn't there, as they weren't crisp, but these were decent in taste.
Stopped by Hai Phong for a quick dinner the other day. I was really looking forward to it 'cuz I haven't been since they re-opened. The decor seemed much nicer than before- very clean and bright.. I wanted to try everything on the menu but only had room f
