I give this 4 strictly for food quality. Everything we ordered was good!
Especially the bitter melon and beef with rice, it had a lot of wok-power that you can really taste. Even my mom who originated from HK felt like this dish brought her back to her hometown!
The wontons were big and full of shrimp.
The beef noodle soup - beef was tender and noodles were bouncy.
The -1 point goes to the slow arrival of our food and the cleanliness.
We (my mother and I) were in the area and went for lunch, showing up a bit early. The staff were inside but unprepared so we ended up having to wait ~10 mins past the opening time to enter along with a couple other groups.
We've been at Kwong Chow once before after a friend referred us, and we loved the ostrich. So tender...The dongpo pork with dried mustard was great too! So, this time we wanted to have the ostrich again, but when we got there, it wasn't on the menu and the waitress said they didn't have any. I wish they'd said so on their website (the menu there has a section on ostrich, pretty sure it's where the menu on zomato is from).
Instead, we ordered one dish each from the lunch combo menu. For $7~9, you can get a bowl of congee, noodles or a plate of rice with meat/veggies (you choose according to the menu; lots of choices, the price varies) which comes with your choice of coffee, tea, or soup (just broth, no solids inside).
I intended to choose the Beef brisket and tendon noodles, but I think I told the waitress the wrong item number since I didn't read the Chinese (the nunbers don't line up that well on the menu). I spoke in English, but my mother was speaking Chinese to her so she repeated my order back to me in Chinese and... well let's just say my ears failed me LOL
I ended up getting the next item on the menu, Assorted beef. An interesting surprise, it was almost what I meant to order except... for two slices of what my mother later identified as lung. It was strange but not too bad. Kind of liver-flavoured, but gentler, less dense, and with a rougher texture than liver. The noodles were the kind that contain baking soda (碱), and some of that flavour went into the soup. The soup also tasted of suji (素鸡, a vegetarian "chicken" soy product similar to tofu), which is an interesting touch (my mother insists they're putting leftover broth from cooking suji into the soup. Well, who knows?) In the end, I still received the beef tendon I was going after since it was included in the "assorted". yay
My mother ordered 萝卜牛腩饭, not sure what that is in English on the menu, but it's something like Lo bok and brisket rice. Emphasis on rice. There was. So. Much. Rice. Probably 2.5 bowls' worth. As you might expect, she didn't finish it. The meat and lo bok was also plentiful though.
The soup that came with the combo (we both chose soup) was warming and had some herbal flavour in it I couldn't identify. Something between minty and sour, but not unpleasant.
Overall, it's by no means a fancy place (see the decor), especially if you're just going for the lunch combo, but I did enjoy my meal and left with a full tummy ^^
I hope they can have ostrich available again. The waitress didn't elaborate on the situation so I don't know whether this was just for today, or long term.
Came here tonight for the first time. The 5 of us thought the food was very good. The Chinese donuts were great, came out hot and fresh - you could smell the peanut oil and they were crispy on the outside but still moist and chewy on the inside. Really enjoyed everything else. Service was pretty good, they were friendly :)
