Madras Dosa House (南印及斯里蘭卡風味餐館)
Onion Chilli Uttappam $6.99 ~
Best dosas in town. When this place is closed and I have to go elsewhere for my dosa fix, it just isn't as good.
Small quiet room, usually empty which means service is usually prompt. Value for money is unrivalled, a huge dosa with two chutneys and lentil soup is $10, nice cold drinkable white wine is $5 per glass. The chicken vindaloo dosa is my personal favourite, flavourful and spicy.

I LOVE this place. It's a family-owned, hidden gem in the Fraserview neighbourhood, with great food and fantastic service. You never have to wait very long for the food and are always greeted with a smile.
Favourites here are the chicken palak dosa, chicken 65 and veggie pakoras (so delicious and different than other pakoras I've had). Great value. I can't say enough good things about this place!
When we walked into the place, it looked very spacious and recently renovated, not to mention tons of seating area. So, group get-togethers will not be a problem.
For appetizers we ordered three dahi vadas (one for each of us). It was very fresh and the portions were appropriate. At first we thought the yogurt was too sweet, but it turned out to be a sweet red chutney sauce. If anyone orders this dish, I'm giving you all a head's up: it's the red chutney that is sweet - mixing it with the yogurt and dahi vada pieces is the key to enjoying this delightful favourite.
It took about 25 minutes for our dinner to arrive. That wasn't so bad.
We ordered Spring Masala Dosa, Masala Dosa, and prawn biryani. All three dishes were excellently prepared. The dosa crepe was perfect and lengthy, and I have to say I really enjoyed eating it.
The Spring Masala Dosa was spicy because I asked to make it hot. The potatoes were mashed up beautifully; however, they put lots of sliced onions. So for those who don't like too much onions in their dosa, this might not be to your liking.
The Masala Dosa was spiced mildly and decent. The filling was steaming hot, most importantly - a clear indication of freshness!
Lastly, the prawn biryani was very tasty. It was not unbearably spicy. It came garnished South-Indian style with a boiled egg. The best part is that there was a generous amount of prawns.
Naturally, we enjoyed our dinner at Madras Dosa House. I will be coming back here again and I recommend this place for a low-budget, exotic dinner.
Pretty nondescript location on Fraser and 41st. The dosa is pretty good, and tastes kind of like a giant samosa...with a crepe wrapping and yummy dipping sauce. But my favourite thing was still butter chicken, theirs is very heavy on some kind of spice I can't name, and it makes it delicious. Portion of basmati rice it comes with is massive too, never get this much anywhere else!
Decent South Indian food, excellent service, and very reasonable prices. What's not to like about Madras Dosa House? I only wish the interior and the music were more South Indian in nature.
They say your first time is always the most special. Coming from Saskatchewan, I was a Dosa virgin. I got to say that was thoroughly impressed with the veggie dosa house platter. The dosa was cooked perfectly and delicious when dipped into the sambar and chutney. I was not a fan of the gooy coconut sauce so I ignored it overall, I would go back again!
This place has authentic South Indian food. Simple and delicious. Reminds me of restaurants in India. Wished I'd known about this place earlier.
Best South Indian Food. Had an amazing experience. The food is authentic, non - greasy and tasty. Some items especially the vindaloo stuffing is hot but has a kick to it. Loved the experience. Family owned with extremely courteous service. I would say the best South Indian meal I have tasted around Vancouver. Only setback - debit or cash accepted, no credit cards.
Great dosas!. We recently went to Madras Dosa House, and were pleasantly surprised! We had the eggplant and lamb vindaloo dosas and they were awesome! Really, really good. We will definitely be back. Nice family run place with friendly and attentive service, and prices were really reasonable.
Addictive!. My partner & I eat here all the time. I was recommended this place by a South Indian man who told us that it has the best dosas outside of South India. Now, I haven't been to South India, so I can't confirm that. But I can say that you're in for a treat! The dosas are huge and cripy with two a fresh coconut chutney and a tomato-something chutney...AND a delicious spicy lentil soup, all included.
My new favourite is the potato eggplant...so yummy! When you go, make sure to order the idly as an appetizer. Those three savoury donuts are a fantastic combination of crispy on the outside and melt in your mouth on the inside.
This place is also very easy on the wallet. We leave full and our bill after tax and tip comes to $25 if we resist the scrumptious mango lassis made to order.
We've come to know the family that owns it and they are wonderful. It's an all-around great experience.
Lots of vegetarian options. We had the idly, uttapam, masala dosa, cheese dosa, and paneer dosa. It was all excellent! Very authentic and fresh chutneys. Highly recommend for a true south Indian experience!
Dosa me up!. I'm no expert on dosas, so maybe it doesn't mean much that I think the one I had at Madras Dosa House was excellent. The dosa itself was freshly made and had some crisp crunch to it -- that's a plus. The chicken vindaloo inside was spicy, but only two-alarm hot, not burn-the-roof-of-your-mouth intense. The vegetables were chopped smaller than the chicken chunks, which to me is an indication that the cook is doing a good job. Big chunks of potato, etc. means a lazy cook, IMO. Good masala chai too, although my forehead was sweating so much from the vindaloo that I drank a litre of water with the meal. (I know this quantity for a fact because I went through the 600-ml water bottle I carry with me on bicycle rides, and the waitress refilled my glass three times. Hell yeah it's spicy!)
The only bad thing about Madras Dosa House is the location. Don't sit facing Fraser Street, or you're going to be looking at a sign advertising a crematorium at the cemetery across the road. Not an appetite stimulator, eh?
Delicious Dosas in this little family run restaurant...Mom, Dad and the three kids. Mango lassis are great. We had the Masala Dosa, the Chicken Vindaloo Dosa, the Lb Vindaloo Dosa and out son had the butter chicken. All done beautifully
Yummy!. What a delight; what a pure delight! Enjoyed my spicy spinach dosa - loved the people who were so warm!
Will be going back again and again.
When I first heard about dosas, I was intrigued! A crepe the size of a baseball bat? Count me in!! LOL! So I looked up places for dosas in Vancouver, and this place on Fraser St came up! The reviews looked promising, and the prices were really reasonable! $8 - $10 lunch specials! This got me thinking, how do they package take out orders? LOL! The dosas are ridiculously massive, there wouldn't be a box that it could fit in! Maybe they just hand it to you in a paper bag? haha! When I walked in, the place was a desert LOL. No diner in sight. Just me! Which was a relief LOL, because I'm really self conscious about eating around people haha! But, it also meant that this place *might* not be that good. I was seated at a two person table, and served by a girl about my age! I had questions about the menu, but she couldn't answer any of my questions...she just read off of the description on the menu haha! Forgivable though, since she was so young! Lamb Masala Dosa $10.99 Combo 3/5 stars The table beside me gasped when they saw this LOL, and they asked me "Are you going to be able to finish that?" It looked like a lot of food, but it actually wasn't lol! The dosa was only filled a quarter into the wrap! The shell was super thin and airy, and really crunchy! The lamb masala filling had spinach and potatoes in it. Flavour wise, the lamb was spicy but I found the filling to be a bit one note. Here's a peek inside the dosa! Soup 3/5 stars I really liked this!Even though it looked watered down, it wasn't at all! It was spicy, and tasted strongly of coriander! There were pieces of chopped up celery, carrots, and onion in it! The cilantro added a nice kick. Sauces 3/5 stars The dosa also came with some sauces on the side! I didn't know what neither of them were (cause I'm a total noob LOL) but they were both pretty tasty! The orange sauce tasted like curry and the green stuff was mild tasting and creamy!
Their menu is quite extensive with over 20 different Dosas to chose from. There are Dosas for vegetarians, Chicken, Lamb and Seafood lovers alike. There is almost a different Dosa for each day of the month
it proved again to be a great hidden treasure on Fraser Street. The first thing I was craving to try here is their mango lassi. Not an item on the menu, but they sure do it and do it well.
When it came time to order, I wanted some of my favourites but at least try one new thing.
Here's a recommended menu for when you visit.
The Sambar Vada - deep fried patties soaked in a spicy lentil soup.
A couple of years ago my friends introduced me to dosas and I couldn't get enough of them. Curry rolled up in a crêpe? That's two of my favorite things for the price of one and I went back to the Southern Indian dish over and over again until I had tried
Madras is the old name for what is now called Chennai in Tamil Nadu. I’ll be oversimplifying here: the cuisine is characterized by expertly prepared pulse (bean) dishes, rice, the use of coconut (meat, milk, and oil), tamarind for souring.
