A simple, unassuming Chinese restaurant but it is quite good. I normally don't like going to Chinese restaurants (after going so much, and for every single occasion since I was a child haha) but if I had to pick, Koon Bo would be one of the top places. They make a very good shredded chicken and jellyfish (? not sure of the English name). It gets quite busy in here and is very cramped. Would recommend making a reservation. Parking can be quite tight in the parking lot, but if you're lucky you can find free street parking around this area.
There were lots of customers waiting for the table at entrance. Luckily we had a reservation and we can skip the queue. *Highly recommend for table reservation* the food is delicious and the portion is big enough. Definitely I will come again. *Like*
Koon Bo is one of those Chinese restaurants that you would like to go with a bigger group of, at least 8 or 10 people. The dishes here are of great quality and big portion, but also on the pricier side. So it makes sense to have more people in order to try more different dishes. The place is known for a few dishes that you have to order 24 hours in advance, such as the Winter Melon Soup, which is labour intensive, and the Fried Squab, as they only use the freshest birds that are somewhat limited in quantity.
Not going to bother trying to translate the names to English but honestly everything we had was bomb.
I'm Chinese and this is honestly one of the best Chinese restaurants in vancouver. Place isn't clean and upscale mind you but they really do their dishes very well.
Best highlight is the tofu ball dish. Amazing fried light and flakey outer coating that wrapped around a tofu mix that has some texture to it. The pork that came with the dish in the fried wonton skin bowl was super delicious too.
Another MUST order is the shredded chicken with fried wonton strips, sesame seeds and oil, and sour pickled veggies. Foodgasm.
Loved everything here. Wish the place was cleaner though. However that's not going to stop me from coming back!
This place has got to be one of the best and underappreciated restaurants out there. It's situated in an unassuming complex on Fraser with a mix of other retailers. The shopfront is not anything spectacular. Actually, it's a bit run down, both outside and inside. But wow. The food.
Food/Drink: I recently had a gathering there so we ordered quite a bit of food. Would recommend the Shredded Chicken Salad, the Wintermelon soup, Tapioca pudding (both these must be pre-ordered), Honey Garlic Pork Chops with Tofu, and the Peatips. Get your appetites ready. Definitely worth a try!
Ambience: As I said, it's just a really unpretentious place to have good food with a table full of good friends/family. But it gets pretty packed so come early.
WORD OF CAUTION: cash and visa place only.
Service: Standard chinese restaurant service. However, if you will preorder anything, look for Wing. He's awesome to talk to, super efficient and advices you on how much to order for your group.
Transport: Take the 41 Joyce Station bus and stop at Fraser. It's just across the street.
Best known dishes are deep fried squab, shredded chicken, winter melon soup, baked tapioca pudding (all these items is best to pre-order). Expect to wait for your table even if you have reservations.
No, if there is one thing that diners come here for, it’s this… their House Special Shredded Chicken. Yes, it seems like such a simple dish but they really nail it here. The crunchy jellyfish, wonton strips, and pickled veggies pairs so well with the shredded chicken.
Great Chinese dinner. Came early so had great service, some menu items need to be ordered a day before you come so it would be prepared for your dinner like the Baked sago pudding with taro and lotus seed paste.
Overall, the food we had tasted very good so we were not disappointed from most other high end chinese establishments.
Go When it's Less Busy. Located in the corner of a very small complex on E 41st and Fraser St, this little hole in the wall is not as little on the inside as its outward appearance leads you to believe. It's also very packed during dinner time, full of families with their grandparents. The food was good, but service was incredibly slow; what a shame.
Sooo good. Best squab I have ever tasted in my life, the meat is soft and the skin is crispy. It is probably the most ordered dish at dinner- if you make reservations, they ask you in advance if you're planning on ordering squab.
Probably the best chow mein in the city too; the sauce is just right and the noodles aren't overly crispy.
Dishes are perfect for sharing.
I have been meaning to write a post about Koon Bo for awhile now, but this one always have seem to slipped my mind. Anyhow, it's never too late. I have been here twice already in the past year, but I'll share with you my latest experience. Koon Bo Koon Bo is an award winning Chinese restaurant in Vancouver for years. Mostly known for its deep-fried squabs, their house special shredded chicken and baked tapioca dessert. This is not a high class Chinese restaurant. In fact, it looks quite worn down. Yet, this place is still packed. It's most likely you won't get a spot if you don't make reservations on the weekends because it's not a very big restaurant. Roasted Peanuts These were complimentary appetizers. I don't believe they give these out to everyone because I certainly didn't get a plate the first time I went. House Special Shredded Chicken (Half Order) The shredded chicken dish
They also both specialize in hand shredded chicken 手撕雞, a cold and refreshing mix of shredded chicken breast, pickled vegetables, fried wonton skins, jellyfish, and sesame. This is one of my favorite dishes since it is actually fairly light and doesn't really have a lot of deep fried components to it.
Koon Bo is one of those neighbourhood restaurants that has been around for *forever* and caters to the locals. Tucked away in a small strip of businesses on 41st and Fraser Street in Burnaby, parking can be meager, but free. We've gone to Koon Bo for almo
Koon Bo is one of those restaurants that if you don’t know about it, you would never think to go there. After all, the location pretty much sucks, the parking sucks, the decor sucks, the waiting area sucks, you get the drift. So why is it so popular? Of c
