Probably one of my favourite sushi joints in Vancouver. Love the wasabi especially! They're always super friendly with great food.
Blew past my expectations! Every piece tasted amazing <3 Even the ginger and wasabi was all made and chopped in house!
Always provides the best sushi in the town! The chef is handsome too :p
Best sushi I've had in Vancouver, hands down. Don't change a thing guys!
Yummy & fresh sashimi just melting in your mouth .
By far the best sushi in Vancouver. Super cozy place and staff is very friendly. Been going there since they open and still going all the time :)
Time for some wasabi kicks into our food crawl – Sushi by Yuji. Melody chose this restaurant, because it is reasonably priced, and the ingredients are super fresh. More importantly, we are here for some egg porn!. Sushi by Yuji is a hidden gem on Nanaimo Street. Though it is small, they serve some of the best sushi in the Kensington area. We again ordered some of the daily specials, as well as the signature nigiri sushi. I only tried two sushi, Aji (Spanish Mackerel) Nigiri and Ika Mentaiko Gunkan, because I was full after two restaurants LOL!
I love this place. Small and cozy with yummy fresh tasting sushi that comes with the right proportion of rice. One of the best sushi place in town.
It waaaaaaaaaaassssssss likeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee soooooooooooooooooooooo flaaaaaaavourfuuuuuuuuuuuullll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Let me preface this post by saying that I love eggs. Poached, fried, boiled… you name it. So when I saw social media light up a few months ago with glorious pictures of ikura (salmon roe) and quail eggs, my interest piqued. This little restaurant is quite small and almost always busy. I managed to grab one of the last seats at the counter (there were a lot of tables that were set aside as reserved). Food started arriving after five minutes in waves as soon as it was prepared.
I love sushi! This place really impressed me. As my family was being seated, the chef was cutting up a fresh wild salmon seeing this guaranteed that my sashimi was not bought from a store in a frozen state.
What caught my attention when our first order arrived was the wasabi. It was from grated fresh from the root(see photo). FYI - I hate powdered wasabi. I tried their popular quail egg sushi, house roll, salmon cheek with sweet sauce and a few pieces of nigiri. The sushi quality is impressive and you'll notice it from the rice and your first bite. I would need to go back here and try the rest of their menu. My overall experience was exceptional and I want more of their food.
I recommend people to try this place at least once. Also call in to see if they are open because they have odd hours of operation.

The first dish to arrive was the Marinated Tuna, a small appetizer consisting of marinated small cubes of tuna, wasabi, sesame, and daikon. The smell of sesame was quite strong here, and the tuna had an excellent melty and soft texture. However, I didn't exactly expect the tuna to be almost
We've heard and read good things about Sushi by Yuji and decided we had to give it a try. Overall, we had a good experience. We would recommend it, but we're not sure if we'll return because we really like our grilled mackerel, and they didn't have it.
Keep in mind eating here was more of a challenge than I had anticipated, everytime i tried they were always closed. It wasnt until one morning i decided to go and be there as soon as the doors opened for their lunch time, not too sure why but it seems like they close the restutuaunt after only a few customers. Maybe to keep the capacity low and to focus more on the food? Not too sure ... Either way the food was great! Everything was so fresh and made with a lot of precision, possibly some of the fattiest toro I've ever had.. IN MY LIFE. I recommend trying the negitoro here as it is delicious, its made with green onions and for a girl who doesn't usually like green onions I found this to still be great. The only dishes i didnt care for were the cooked salmon and the uni, I will admit I was a bit disappointed with the uni as it didnt taste as fresh as everything else. Another thing to remember is this place can be a bit more expensive, especially if you order a lot of nigiri which is their specialty (imo).
Fresh and basic.
Second time here, everything was as good as last time.
Tried their engawa (halibut edge)..phenomenal piece of fish. When its first in your mouth, not much is happening. Right after your first bites, a rush of beautiful fat oozes out. It doesn't unpleasantly flood your mouth. It was the perfect amount of fish oil. After that I'm sold on engawa.
The only not so positive remark I have about this place is that they don't serve tamago. And as basic as this may be, I use this standard to determine how good a Japanese restaurant is. For them to not have it, Im a bit disappointed.
After three unsuccessful attempts at trying to walk-in to see if there was a table, I finally got to eat here after making reservations a week in advance. It was also a late dinner too at 8:30pm and they close at 9:30pm. So if you are planning to come, I suggest calling as soon as you know to make reservations because you don’t want to end up like me! Another downside is there is are photos to the menu but luckily we have IG to thank, just scrolling through and picking out what we thought looked good. Let me tell you off the bat that we were still left pretty hungry, I being the piggy that I am, went home and ate a bowl of ramen afterwards.
After viewing all the pictures of the gunkan and nigiri sushi, I was so tempted to try it out with my girlfriend. It was perfect that night because she wasn't too hungry either.
Plenty of free parking all around, we see this tiny corner. We didn't make any reservations but we lucked out at the bar. This place was hustling busy busy. I prefer sitting at the bar because it's a different experience. I love the simple concept "sushi by yuji." We watched him meticulously work on his art. I decided to only order his nigiri and gunkan. My girlfriend wanted to add a roll, the Alaskan, which had cream cheese in it. Meh, why not let's try the negitoro.
Holy smokes the ikura with quail egg danced in my mouth. The ika with shiso is so authentic, since there's wasabi and mint in it. The chopped scallop gunkan, generous in topping and man was it refreshing. How the hell does he keep his scallop and roe so cold?!? The tuna carpaccio as well the salmon carpaccio had a tangy soy sauce in it, yuji said please don't put soy, it already has soy. No problem because with the quality and craft he has, I didn't use soy sauce all night. I never use it as a condiment when you have such fresh seafood. It just insults his craft. And this guy is the real deal. And the color on his mackeral wow...
Our light dinner turned into a bigger one lol. We couldn't stop ordering. Originally we were at 25 bucks, then totalled out to 38. We felt like we ate 70 bucks worth and we were so surprised. This place will forever be my nigiri and gunkan sushi to go to. Chef yuji, thank you so much! You are amazing and you deserve alot more credit!
Food is 5/5
Service unfortunately was slow 3/5
But the wait is well worth it, if your ordering nigiri and gunkan.
Make reservations for sure. I will next time.
When you get the bill they give you POCKY YAAAA lol!
Update: May 12 2016
Chef yuji is consistent and man the quality is outstanding. Our group pigged out no regrets.
Keep in mind people, this place is quality and not quantity. There's only one sushi chef hence trying to control the flow of the restaurant. Just make a reservation. Going there without one is like playing bingo with old ladies, cause you won't win.
Sushi By Yuji is on Kingsway is best known for their fresh nigri and gunkan types of sushi. After seeing lots of people commenting about my last post about Masayoshi, people told me to check out Sushi by Yuji. The space is small and it’s best to make reservations here to guarantee a spot. On the night that we went, they had no more spots for walk ins.

Overall, the quality is there but it can get a bit expensive if you are a big eater. The taste is very clean and doesn't have any additional sauces to them.
What we must order when we visit Sushi By Yuji: Ika Mentaiko, Chopped Scallop, Tobiko with Quail Egg, Shiro Roll.
I love how their sushi quality (flavor, temperature, proportion) is always so consistent. Even the size of each nigiri is always just right, meaning I never have to spread my mouth wide open to stuff a nigiri. The quail egg here always tastes so fresh too that it really adds a nice creaminess to the sushi. As for the Shiro Roll, it was so filling and satisfying! It was packed with all sorts of sashimi (probably the ends and scraps of sashimi, but still tasted fresh and tasty!), and it didn't have too much rice. The roll was quite large in size but come on, it's their version of House Roll!
Went to this place on a Thursday night, small little place, like a hole in the wall, no line ups, got seated right away, ordered the assorted sushi combo, came with eight pieces and a roll, also got a miso soup, the sushi and the roll was ok, but the miso was too salty, overall was ok, not too special, try somewhere else next time.
I can honestly say that this is one of my many favorite sushi restaurant in Vancouver. Reservation is a must as it is a 18 seat restaurant including the bar I think. Service is good. Seafood is fresh.
I recently visited Sushi By Yuji after seeing some ridiculously yummy pictures on Instagram. I rarely eat nigiri's and often stick to rolls at Japanese restaurants. But I realize now that nigiri is so much better! Especially when paired with fresh ingredients. This is a very tight and small family own business. The restaurant itself can't probably hold more than 14 people so I'd definitely recommend calling in advance to make a reservation.
Great pricing for the fresh food. Reservation recommended esp if you want to dine early.
Had the takoyaki, assorted sashimi & sushi, hamachi nigiri, and nigitoro with egg. Takoyaki tasted similar to those I had in Osaka, just with a bit more floury flavour to it, which I liked. Sashimi and sushi is fresh and well made. Nigitoro with egg was very special - you'll have to see the image to understand it!
Sashimi is always fresh! My favourite sushi join in Vancouver. It's one of those places that you may never wander in if you walk by, but if you find it you're definitely in for a treat. Small restaurant so there can sometimes be a wait or they've also told us that they're closed because they're all full. Worth waiting for though!
This was a really good sushi place. Everything was really fresh and made to order. Although it's a really small restaurant. I came by a few times and it was fully booked. So if anyone was wanting to try this place out, it's best to make a reservation. The menu had a limited selection, but everything they served was good. the price was not exactly cheap, but for the quality of food, I thought it was pretty good. The service was not bad at all. I would want to go back and try other dishes that I haven't tried.

Sushi by Yuji pictures have been showing up all over my Instagram, so I decided it was time to give it a try. Located on Kingsway between Victoria and Nanaimo, this little sushi shop is a hidden gem. The place will fit probably only around 20 people and is run by chef Yuji himself and two waitresses. Simple, casual decor but not cramped. Service is a bit slow though because Yuji prepares basically everything by himself.
come here for the nigiri and sashimi. It is fresh and simple. The decor and ambiance are lacking but the food is top notch. Limited seating though.
The fish is really fresh and you can definitely tell the difference from other sushi places. I went with my mum for lunch and everything we had was delicious. We tried the chopped scallop with shiso and ginger roll, spicy negitoro roll, ika and shiso nigiri, saba shiso roll with ginger, and their lunch special. Their lunch special is pretty worth it. At 9.95, it came with california roll, 2 pieces each of salmon and tuna nigiri, spicy avocado and asparagus roll, and miso soup.
Although we waited a bit for our food, you can tell that the chef is very meticulous when making the food. The server was attentive and made sure we had enough tea. At the end of the meal, you receive a yummy treat...pocky (:
I will definitely be going back!
Whether it is going out with one friend or a group of friends for dinner, I always have a fun time. My friend Betty and I finally got together and visited Sushi by Yuji along Kingsway a month ago for dinner. This place has been on my food list for ages as I have heard many raving reviews about their sushi and fresh seafood. It is a small establishment that gets filled up quickly by eaters coming in to eat.
I have visited multiple times now. Probably the best sushi place in the whole city. Everything I have tried on their menu has been fantastic. Even the udon noodles are made in house! Their portion sizes are smaller than most places but more than make up for it with well balanced flavours and attention to detail. This restaurant has my only 5 star rating for all of the GVRD.
My rating is based on food only. Service is average.
Worth a repeat!. Came in and had a seat at the bar and watched Yuji and his staff work. Everything was very high quality and, while there were favorites, there wasn't a single miss the entire meal. My personal favorites were the Negitoro with Egg and the salmon carpaccio and my girlfriend was very fond of the the house special roll.
Meal was capped off with a nice surprise when the bill was handed to us with two packs of very expensive pocky snacks.
Great experience, great food, great restaurant. Will definitely repeat when we thin out our list of must-trys
I have been meaning to check this place out for ages as Yuji used to work at one of my favourite sushi joints.... I had miso soup, tuna nigiri, spicy tuna roll, and vegetable gyoza. Everything was top notch. The nigiri was the perfect temperature with nice big chunks of tuna and a small ball of rice. The vegetable gyoza was also fantastic. Highly recommended. If you like sushi, just go here. Trust me. It is really, really good.
My Favourite Sushi Place. Sushi by Yuji is my favourite sushi spot in Vancouver, by a long shot. I often order take-out from here and have never been disappointed. Although the prices are a little bit higher than what you find elsewhere in Vancouver, it is well worth it. I find the quality of the fish is always fantastic and fresh. I would highly recommend the hamachi salmon avocado roll to anyone going for their first time.
The atmosphere inside isn't the greatest, but I hardly care as I only ever get take-out from here.
Gem on Kingsway. This place is such a gem! Recently dropped in here as I got recommended to come. This place is small but comfortable. We sat at the bar and watched Yuji and his assistant prepare the sashimi, sushi etc.. I liked this place because they have a unique "ingredient" if you call it, not many places use " quail egg", that was a seller for me and no regrets!~. All sashimi and rolls are very fresh, I definitely recommend anything with hamachi or the ika with the quail egg :)
Price is average , maybe 50cents to a dollar more then a " average place". What I enjoy is the service, the waitresses were very attentive to water filling, dirty dishes etc. All the staff are Japanese, the icing on the cake was the chocolate pockey at the end. I have a sweet tooth haha. Overall 5/5, Make sure you call ahead to avoid line ups
Delicious!. After watching a documentary about a legendary Japanese restaurant Jiro, I wanted to find the best sushi place in town. So after my research, I decided to try this place, and place is a piece gem.
Authentic Japanese Sushi. Came with high expectations, left feeling completely satisfied. Sushi by Yuji is a hidden gem on Kingsway, with very authentic Japanese-style sushi created by one chef. We sat in front of the chef and were able to see the chef creating everything.
The fish was fresh, most of it local and some of it imported from various countries around the world, and the care and detail the chef puts into his creations is top notch. We started off with the negitoro with egg and it was probably our favourite item that we ordered the entire night, even more so than the hamachi toro which we found very fresh as well.
For once, a sushi restaurant actually used authentic Japanese sushi rice, and that alone is enough to make us come back for more.
Great, prompt and friendly service from the waitresses and being able to converse with the head (and only) chef after the meal was definitely a plus, having him ask us whether everything was great, especially since we witnessed the entire creation process from the cutting of the fish to put with the nigiri, to mixing the hot sauce for the spicy tuna rolls.
Overpriced? Not at all. Don't expect anything deep fried at all. This is authentic Japanese-style sushi you'd expect to eat in Japan, and it was worth every penny.
Sushi by yuji is GREAT! haha yes. its great. delicious, amazing sushi, probably the best sushi in vancouver.. if we're talking about sushi.. as in real sushi. the place is really small.. 1 sushi chef, 1 waitress and you may have to wait 20-45 minutes after you placed your order but after it comes you wont be dissapointed. love it
Does it get awesomer?. This is the closest, authentic sushi i have had for a long time. Yuji is talented, friendly, and genuine who runs a restaurant that serves nothing but fresh fish on your table. Will be my go-to place for as long as I live in the nearby upstairs condo suite.
I would like to say the food here reminds me of Japan. Brings back memories. It's obviously not exactly like the food I've eaten in Tokyo ($250 per person) but It's quite authentic and the prices are very affordable!! I would eat there everyday If I didn't live in downtown
Authentic, great sushi. I had an omakase meal (kind of like prix fixe where you leave it to the chef to serve you whatever he likes, usually whatever is fresh) here and it was amazing. I worked in Tokyo for 3 years, and the quality and taste that Yuji provides can definitely compare to some of my favourite spots in Japan.
We started with a sashimi moriawase (mix plate), followed by a series of amazing nigiri sushi served in small plates one after another, ending with two hosomaki rolls with a good amount of ingredients in them (read: not kappamaki!). Everything served was fresh, traditional and done really well. To complement the food, the service was great, our tea cups never dipped below half full.
Like a lot of the best sushi places I frequented in Tokyo, this shop is small and minimalist with a focus on fresh delicious seafood. Prices were very reasonable for the excellent quality, would definitely recommend this place and will be back with friends & family.
* no liquor license yet, but he's working on it...!
He is one of Heart of Gold ITAMAE. He is really working hard with what he doing his business. He love his customers , family , friends and his staff. I love his sushi any kind he makes
soooooooo good! My families favorite sushi place is Sushi by Yuji no where else!! Good for you Brother!
Nice Authentic Sushi Bar On Kingsway. FYI: 11:30-2:30 for Lunch; 5:00-9:30 for Dinner - From his Facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/sushibyyuji
There aren't many sushi joints in the Vancouver area that are operated by a Japanese chef. That's where Sushi by Yuji comes in, Yuji is a trained Japanese Sushi Chef.
That's Good.!
Yuji is a great character and personable and his passion for freshness shows in the food. I'm no expert but the quality shows. The real wasabi to properly formed rice. The (Wild) Salmon roll was solid. I point out wild, as many other sushi places will use farmed. The rice and overall texture was evident and there wasn't really much need for soy sauce.
The BC Roll - one of my favourite rolls in general (I love salmon skin, I'll fry that sucker in bacon fat at home). And Chef Yuji did not disappoint, at all.
It was a damn good tasting BC Roll.
Now unfortunately, I didn't take pictures (camera phone is useless), but for you reading this review and hate when your sushi breaks into pieces before it even hits your tongue, this is a place to try.
I would gladly sacrifice quantity for quality any time of the day. I could stand to lose a couple pounds anyways!.
For those that love their sushi, you'd definitely want to give Chef Yuji a try.
I don’t really have anything to say beyond what’s already been said. There’s good quality, authentic Japanese food here. (So I’ve heard it’s “authentic”. I mean, who am I to judge what authentic sushi is?) . The service can be slow given that Yuji is the only one who makes the dishes and they have a lot of take out orders on top of orders made from the seated patrons, but it’s tolerable. The vegetarian options are classics, including cucumber, pickled radish, pickled vegetables, dried gourd, avocado, plum, and fermented soybean soybean rolls. They also have spicy asparagus and spicy vegetable rolls. Prices are average (it’s a good deal for the quality, people say). My omnivore friends really enjoyed the food. I think it’s worth a try, but, again, there’s so much competition in the Lower Mainland when it comes to sushi, so there’s no rush to try this place for a vegetarian.
This is the first time we’ve tried Sushi by Yuji, and it really reminds me of those smaller, more personal Japanese sushi bars in Japan. Upon entering, you are immediately greeted by everyone in the establishment...Yuji and his assistant are the only ones preparing the sushi, this ensures that the quality and cuts are constant. That is my favourite aspect of the smaller sushi bars. Since it was a place we’ve never been before, rather than ordering a-la-carte, we went with the omakase option, which means we are leaving it up to the chef to decide what we eat.
Handwritten menus and specials on the walls, Sushi by Yuji is small, quaint and authentic. The perfect spot to get my sushi and sashimi cravings satisfied. A buddy and I went for a late Sunday dinner and essentially had the place to ourselves. No qualms with that. The prices are more than reasonable especially when you take into consideration the quality you’re getting. We wanted to try both so we got half an order of each kind. So fresh, seriously, this was a good way to start my sushi eating in Van.
When you step into this restaurant, you are greeted by Yuji, the sushi chef. He is friendly and very personable...Overall, I really enjoyed this dinner. I love supporting new restaurant owners who are passionate about food. Vancouver's dining industry is very competitive. Props for Yuji for being such a enthusiastic sushi chef. AND, Meko loved the fact that he gave us Pocky at the end of the meal as a thank you.
... I would have happily paid up to around $75 for this meal! For the entire hour and thirty minutes we were there, we constantly had our tea refilled and were checked on, even though it was just Yuji himself and 1 server.
