You ever have one of those meals that was so good, you couldn’t stop thinking about it the next day? That was Zakkushi on Main for the boyfriend and I!. I had heard of Zakkushi before but kind of forgot about it until my uncle recommended it one night.
Always delicious. Service is typical izakaya (warm/welcoming) and the food is on point. We always go for the quail eggs and p-toro. Meatballs are less good for the price.
We were back to Zakkushi on a Saturday early evening. Despite making reservations a day ahead, they only had bar seating area available for us but they had given us a heads up about it over the phone already. Zakkushi is right by Main and 25th in a small strip mall with limited parking. It’s tucked away in the South corner of the building. At Zakkushi, you order small dishes to eat including things like meat skewers.
After returning from our trip to Japan, I was starting to wonder if I would find an izakaya in Vancouver that I really enjoyed (not a big fan of Hapa Izakaya). I decided it was about time we visited Zakkushi as I had heard some pretty good things about them. This place only opens for dinner service and it was fairly busy when we arrived on a Monday night. The menu is a bit daunting given all of the different choices so we just wound up ordering a bunch of items. As this is an izakaya, they have a fairly good selection of drinks to choose from as well. My personal favourite was the Pure Blue ($5.80) made with Bols blue curaçao, lychee liqueur, Calpico, and soda. The Lychee Orange ($4.80) made with lychee liqueur and orange juice was pretty good too.
Really delicious grilled Japanese food. The ribeye skewer was particularly good. We ordered a a few things from the specials menu: chicken karaage with soy vinegar sauce and lightly seated mackerel. 👍👍
One of my favourite izakaya places to go to. Before I was driving to the downtown location and parking was very difficult. I love this location because there is plenty of neighbourhood parking all around.
My girlfriend wanted to take some pictures of food so I decided to bring her here for food porn.
Service is always nice here. They pay close attention to detail in food here. Prices can add up very quickly here but if it's a dining experience your looking for, it's going to be very memorable. Great place for date nights. It does get very busy here, so make a reservation.
I was craving this for a long time and finally was able to satisfy my craving! I would recommend making a reservation because I've come without one before and been told I'd have to wait 45 minutes or longer. So definitely make reservations! The restaurant itself isn't that big, but it has a good ambiance. Also I thought it was pretty neat at the table they had a picture of a chicken with the different parts and some descriptions.
We got takowasabi, zakkushi set, uzura maki, mochi maki, beef tongue, and mentai kimchi yakiudon. The food came out pretty fast. Takowasabi was spicier than I normally am used to and I wish there were a few more pieces of seaweed that came with it. The beef tongue was just OK, I thought it was a bit too chewy. The quail egg was one the skewers I was craving and it didn't disappoint. It was flavourful and tasty. The mochi maki was also really good. There's something about the two textures if crispy and chewy that makes it fun to eat. I liked the variety in the zakkushi set. Although I didn't like the sauce on the umeshio yaki. The yakiudon was good, but I've had better versions of it at other places.
Overall, food here tastes great, but it can get a bit expensive depending on what skewers you're getting. But this is a place that I'd come back to when I'm craving some skewers. Definitely worth a try!
Been there many times, never got disappointed. One of my go to place for Japanese BBQ. Food quality always steady. Love their chicken tsukune!
Zakkushi is an absolutely amazing restaurant- came here for dinner once on a cold and wet night...how miserable! But I knew I was in for a treat.
As you walk in you hear the chefs and waitresses collectively greet you (how warm!) and then they seat you. The overhead lights were decorative and the decor of the whole restaurant was modern, but simple. The very wooden decoration made me feel relaxed and comfortable.
The menu is extensive, with a wide range of appetizers, grilled items, sashimi, and more. The only part of the menu that was limited was the desserts, but that was expected for a Japanese restaurant.
I ordered a LOT of grilled items, including unagi, beef tongue, onigiri, okra, and the steak with ponzu sauce. The food was not too pricey for such high quality food items. All the food was loaded with seasoning and packed with flavor, but I would have to say my favorite was the steak- I found myself unable to stop taking another piece! Other highlights were the shoyu onigiri, crispy on the outside and with a light salty flavor, and soft and steamy on the inside, and the takoyaki which was fluffy in the middle, which a morsel of octopus and covered in Kewpie mayo and Bulldog sauce....what a treat! Mmmmmm! For dessert I ordered the yuzu cheesecake which was rich and creamy, and the yuzu added a sharp sour tang.
Zakkushi is definitely a place to try if you haven't tried it!
Great selection of food. Some of the beef heart and liver a bit chewy but tasty. $50 for 2 peeps and my fav was chicken gizzard. Sashimi ok but chicken balls not that good
