An appealing room, friendly service, and a creative menu, filled with interesting ingredients like mustard greens, sunroot, pine mushrooms, burdock, fennel pollen, black trumpets, green faro, etc. I started with the Marigold’s Gimlet cocktail, very beautifully presented and well balanced flavours. I then had the poached fresh Urban Digs Egg presented over browned butter and potato puree and crumbles of hazelnut and blue cheese on the plate. Lovely. Followed by the fire roasted green faro, with spruce tips, black garlic, and sorrel, a dish I have never seen before. Also very tasty. The ice cream was wonderful and the crust had a fabulous texture
Cool environment and friendly knowledgeable staff. The food is very creative and very delicious. The Uni custard, radishes and the beef collar were all great. Looking forward to going back.
Burdock & Co is one of the few female chef-owned and operated restaurants in Vancouver. Chef Andrea Carlson opened the restaurant in 2013 and the concept is sophisticated dining in a casual setting, with an evolving local and organic menu and naturalist wine program.

I feel as though I've been eating at the same old places lately and dining on the same old types of cuisine. Well, I decided to break out of this funk and go for something new. I decided to head to Maenam, since I saw Angus An on Global TV this morning talking about Sen Pad Thai. Yes, I am very susceptible to TV advertising. We started off with a Grilled Thai Sausage and Crispy Rice Salad. The sausage is house fermented pork, which was reminiscent of Chinese lap cheung (臘腸). There's also some crispy curried rice puffs (think savoury Rice Krispies), all tossed with coriander, lemongrass, ginger, fried shallots, oyster mushrooms, holy basil, and fried garlic. The saltiness of the pork is quite sharp, and the crunch from the rice puffs are perfect for texture. The flavours from the spices are very traditional Thai. This is about half the serving as I was dining with a non-foodie, whose chivalry at serving me beat me to the "phone eats first" mantra that I live by. A whole portion would serve two people nicely as an appetizer. This was another appetizer meant for sharing, it's their Hot and Sour Soup with Halibut Cheek. The heat isn't blow-your-mind hot (but I do have a fairly high tolerance for heat, so beware, my friend thought it was HAWT), rather it's a lingering slow burn. The tartness compliments the spice quite well, and the halibut was cooked perfectly...still tender but not falling apart. And the oyster mushrooms soaked up the soup as well, making every mouthful super tasty. So this was my favourite dish of the night, their 8 Spice Ling Cod. It was truly amazing. The ling cod was super crispy, and topped with a lightly caramelized palm sugar and tamarind sauce. The ling cod stayed crispy under the drizzle of the sauce, and the sprinkling of deep-fried Thai spices and basil was fun.

Burdock's is fantastic. Their dishes are not only pretty but tasty! I love their fried chicken! It is so tender and crispy. Honestly, I've never had a bad dish there.
The dishes here are of the most pretty I may have encountered yet in Vancouver. They are also incredibly unique and balanced in flavour. There is a good combination of recognizable items too however. You definitely get the feeling the chef is trying to tell you a story with these dishes and he is hoping you are open to the ride. Portions however are the smallest I've seen in comparison to the price, however I'd say the above warrants this.
Burdock & Co is located in the heart of Mount Pleasant. They are best known for their family-style dining crafted from organic ingredients. I was invited to dine here with a few other bloggers and media to learn more about Burdock & Co. Chef Andrea Carlson and her team uses local suppliers ranging from B.C. farms to local urban gardens and highlights their offerings in new and eclectic dishes.
I came here for dinner on a weekday to try a variety of dishes I was pleasantly surprised by Agassiz Rice Congee with Halibut. The Rosemary Smoked Clam with Potato Cream was good too. I found that the portions are a bit on the smaller size but they do use quality ingredients in the dishes.
The brunch menu at Burdock is streamlined but considered, featuring traditional brunch items like French toast and fried chicken with a couple of Asian classics like ramen and congee. I'm a sucker for runny eggs so my decision boiled down to the chili fried egg on toast or their take on an eggs Benny.
At the end of the day I went for poached and wasn't disappointed in the slightest. Perfectly soft/medium poach over gluten-free scone and crisped buttered kale covered in hollandaise. Not to mention a modest side of roasted potatoes, perfectly seasoned and charred to give a pan fried crunch.
This place is a mount pleasant gem, and a bit of a hole in the wall so if you want to try it out I recommend reservations or heading in a bit earlier than the normal brunch/dinner rush hour.
One of my favorite restaurants in town is Bao Bei. I know many will disagree, but I have consistently had really great meals there along with really amazing overall experiences. I’m always telling people that in order for me to really love a restaurant, there needs to be at least three dishes that wow me. And by ‘wow’, I mean that I need to be flat out moaning in pleasure with every single bite to the point that my dining companions eventually hush me. At Bao Bei these dishes are their beef tartar, their pork belly, and their shao bing. And it’s been quite some time since I’ve had another dining experience like this. Enter Burdock and Co.
