Umaluma is a shop located in Chinatown that sells the most amazing, creamy, and delicious dairy-free gelato!. Their gelato is so smooth that you can hardly believe that it has no dairy in it. They make their nut mylks in house to create a rich texture that leaves you wanting more. After having my first bite, I was in love. Umaluma’s texture was more of a gelato consistency than an ice-cream one for sure. I’ve had dairy-free and vegan ice-creams before in the past and they were never as smooth and silky as the ones here. They also did not have a coconut flavour like most dairy-free options even though they did use coconut as part of their base.

I came here due to a recommendation of a friend. Her boyfriend is allergic to dairy so its why she sought it out. The gelato retains its creamy texture even though its cashew milk and almond milk based. They also have a nice variety of flavours, and good portion size. Its better value to get two scoops vs one. This is a new favourite ice cream place for me, it tastes good and you get a lot for the price.
My friendly had recently changed his diet, dedicating himself to a dairy free lifestyle. So when looking for an after dinner dessert spot, our options were severely limited; whereas before, he had an as curious and vicarious appetite as myself. Luckily I heard about “Umaluma”, a new dairy-free ice cream shop that opened, right by where we were dining tonight. So we bee-lined it there for dessert.
