Thai night Part Two. I had to go for a sure thing tonight as Part One on Tuesday at another Thai place in Kits was a bomb. We have been going to Taste of Thai for years (used to be Wimaan). It's literally a mom and pop restaurant. Husband runs front of house and the wife is in the kitchen as the "head chef". The kids are helping with dishes and waiting tables.
The food here always brings me back to Thailand. The authenticity of Thai flavours...salty, sour, spicy, sweet ...were evident in every dish we had tonight. Their pride is shown in the presentation of the food and they don't water it down for Canadians. Prices average $1 more than the Tuesday night bomb, but definitely worth it. Portions are not huge, but we (two people) were stuffed with two appys and two mains.
Service here is awesome. Sam, the owner, treats us very well. He really tries to get to know all his regulars. He remembers that we like extra spicy and deep fried banana with ice cream, yum yum. Unfortunately, we were too stuffed for dessert tonight as the food was too yummy to stop eating.
One thing that I must say, the chili sauce that they provide on the side is to die for. They should really think of bottling and selling it. It is just that good.
Ordered the prawn pad Thai, was pretty decent (didn't use ketchup which is always a plus). A tad pricey for the portion though. I would order spicier than you normally do - I got spicy and that wasn't enough
Really enjoyed the yellow curry from here. It was creamy and had a deep flavour. The pad thai and spring rolls were also good. Would try this place again if I'm back in the neighbourhood.
Best in the world!!! Excellent food and service. Owner is very friendly. He always make sure you are happy on what you ordered. (Julian and Jerilyn )
The food is authentic, delicious, and NO MSG (but still taste good!) and you can ask for gluten free options. The owner is very friendly as well! Will come bak again for sure..
Fast prompt service. Ordered the lamb skewers and the prawn dish, chicken curry. Wife can't handle spicy so we ordered mild dishes, with hot chili on the side for me! Will go back!
1st try with UrbanSpoon - wow!. We just moved from Cambie & W Broadway west past Dunbar and we were searching for a great thai restaurant. I tried Urban Spoon for the first time and read the reviews on Taste of Thai. We ordered 4 dishes and the springrolls last night.
- Deliver took 40 minutes (they said 45)
- The delivery guy was super friendly
- Everything came packaged great (and in a cardboard tray instead of a plastic bag, that was a nice touch)
- The dishes were delicious!
I'm hooked on UrbanSpoon and my wife and I have found our new favorite thai restaurant!
Authentic Thai Food. The Spring Rolls were a special treat. If you've ever been to Thailand, then you will know what I'm talking about. For a main course, I ordered Pad Thai even though I can never seem to find authentic Pad Thai. I was pleasantly surprised. It's authentic and even better than most places in Thailand. If you like Thai food then don't miss this spot.
This place is a treasure. I love Thai food above all other Asian cuisine, I love the balance of flavours and healthier options. I've been to Taste of Thai many times, tried about 75% of the menu but will make personal recommendations on some of favs. Gai Hor Bai Toey (delicious marinated chicken wrapped in padan leaf and fried), this dish is a popular thai snack food and the effort that goes into preparing chicken this way makes it a must for me and my family. Massaman curry with chicken is creamy, packed full of flavours and best yet, cooked and simmered with juicy chicken thighs instead of chicken breast which I found too dry for my liking. Curries in Asia rarely use chicken breast meat. I do love both their pad thai and pad see ew, both of which were authentically cooked but I'd recommend their pad see ew more, the rice noodles tasted freshly made as it was soft in its consistency. They also make a mean tom kha gai. If you can handle spicy food, ask for the dishes to be at least medium but ask for a side of prik nam pla if you'd like to kick it up a few notches. Service is friendly and the owner is very personable and genuine and he will make great recommendations, all you have to do is ask. The prices are a few dollars more than most places but rent is high in the westside and trust me, its a small price to pay for tasty Thai food. This place gets a big nod from me for its authenticity and even more for its food prep and awesome service. I've tried many Thai places but I find myself returning to Taste of Thai over and over and over again
Place is fantastic, some of the best thai food in the city. Kitsalano's best kept secret. The owner Sam, is very welcoming. Try the papaya salad, and all the curries I have tried are amazing. I'll be back soon!
Best Thai in Vancouver. Traveled in Thailand and this restaurant does proper Thai. It's not greasy or overly sweet. The family running the restaurant are amazing. They can cater to all types of allergies. They make the best fried bananas and tom kam gai I've ever had.
Amazing. Taste of Thai in Kits was beyond my expectations. I've not had much luck finding good Thai restaurants in the Vancouver area, something I find strange considering the preponderance of Asian restaurants and first generation Asian immigrants to the area. Everything we ordered was excellent. The only "hiccup" was the Pad See Ew. While it tasted very good, it was not like any Pad See Ew I've ever had. The Pad Thai was one of the best Pad Thai's I've ever had. There were two other dishes ordered, but I forget their names, one was a spicy creamy curry that was exceptional. We also ordered spring rolls and the coconut lemon grass soup which were also wonderful. The service was very prompt and friendly and the restaurant, while small, is very clean and well kept up. Taste of Thai has now become our restaurant of choice when we are in the mood for Thai food.
Wonderful dining experience. Located on West Broadway.. it's a great place to eat delicious Thai cuisine. The ambience is mellow, the service and attention were just right. The food was excellent.
This restaurant is a treasure.
Owner guy is super nice, and their food is always fantastic. Highly recommend this place.
Delicious!!. Well, I must say, I was pleasantly surprised at how amazing our dinner was.
We have a long history with this address, first when it was Montri's owned by operated by Montri himself who we knew quite well, and then by Pam and Tony who took it over and did a phenomenal job. Suddenly, after doing amazingly well for so long, it just closed with no warning. We were completely perplexed.
We'd heard that a new Thai restaurant had taken over the space but quite frankly, we couldn't imagine that anything could come close to Montri's. We avoided it for some while and then decided that we should at least give it a try. Well, I'm sure glad we did as it was wonderful! The red curry salmon dish tasted EXACTLY like the one Montri's had as did the spring rolls. They were amazing. We asked for extra sweet sauce and spicy sauce which we got, as both were delicious. We also had coconut rice which was fabulous. The pad thai was good but wasn't like Montri's pad thai but the other dishes and the pad broccoli were delicious.
We will definitely be going back soon.
Pleasantly Surprised. I've grown up in Vancouver eating Thai for as long as I can remember. Everyone in my family chooses Thai over anything else for special occasions. I've been eating at Montri's since it was located on 4th and Trafalgar (Now Q4). I was very disappointed when Montri finally decided to retire and sold his business, name and all.
I had eaten at Montri's while it was under new ownership and was seriously disappointed. The food was disappointing and the service was outrageously poor (45 mins wait for our food and it wasn't busy).
Anyways, I was apprehensive to try Taste of Thai. I really don't like the name, as it makes it sound like a cheap thai takeout place or chain and I'm never impressed by those. However, it was close by and my mother had to catch a red eye so we were pressed for time and didn't want to drive to either Salathai downtown or Sawasdee (my favorite) on Main and 27th ish.
It was quiet because there was a game on and we got to sit right at the window which was nice. They haven't changed the layout since Montri ran the place, but they have changed the decor on the walls. I really liked it! My mother came in after me and recognized the gentleman who I think runs the place now. I guess he's worked at one of the other restaurants because my mother gave him a very excited hello.
Without my dad around, it was my job to order for myself my mother and my grandma. The menu is smaller than some places, which is a good thing, and has some things I've either never noticed or seen on a thai menu before. We ordered Chicken Satay to start and the Som-tam thai (green papaya salad). The chicken satay was pretty good. Six small skewers perfect for splitting between the three of us. The papaya salad was delicious! We were all very impressed with the salad and it was gone in no time at all. We had ordered everything mild because we all have different levels of tolerance to spice. I added some of their thai hot sauce for that kick. It was very flavourful. The dressing wasn't too fishy as it sometimes can be at other places and the fruits and veggies were very fresh tasting.
For our main course we ordered Pad Thai (I find you can always tell how good the food is when you order the pad thai). We also ordered Pad Eggplant with chicken. The pad thai was definitely done differently, it was really great. Big juicy fresh prawns and the sauce was very good, not "ketchupy" tasting as I've found some places (thai house) make it. The eggplant dish was something new for us. This was my least favorite. It was still tasty and I ate all the chicken and peppers, but the eggplant wasn't cooked enough for me. My mother liked it and so did my grandmother, but IMO it could've been better. Or maybe I'm just picky. To finish off I ordered 2 scoops of the coconut ice cream. Even this was above and beyond my expectations. Apparently it's made using coconut milk rather than cream. I would go back just for the ice cream.
The owner came up to us and engaged us in a friendly conversation and he was very happy that we enjoyed our food and to see us (he remembers my dad very well also).
All in all a very pleasantly surprising experience. I am excited that there is some good solid thai food close to home again. I didn't pick up the tab but I think the price was on par with other thai restaurants. We will most definitely be back!
A great start. This restaurant replaced the famous Montri's - a place that I have been going to for many years. I was upset that Montri's disappeared, but I decided to head down to Taste of Thai and order a plate of pad thai just for kicks. Guess what? It was pretty darn good. Rather pricey (at $15) and definitely different than the way Montri's did it, but the order came with 8 perfectly cooked large prawns mixed into the noodles and I enjoyed it very much. Nice texture and well balanced flavours. I'll need to go back a few times and test out the rest of the menu, but this place definitely has potential to be every bit as good as the restaurant it replaced.
*edit - went back and had the pad thai again, pad see ew and garlic pork. I have decided that the pad thai is truly exceptional. The pad see ew is very similar to Montri's version of the dish (which means it is good) but the garlic pork was disappointing. Still, I'll keep going back to this place for the pad thai alone.
