People in Canada love donair as a fast food and especially as a late night snack. But first of all; What is a donair? A dish from Turkey, “döner kebab” is the name for seasoned meat that is stacked in the shape of an inverted cone and turned slowly on a vertical rotisserie. The outer layer is sliced into thin shavings as it cooks. This preparation first appeared in Canada in 1973 when it was introduced in Halifax. Known as a “donair,” the Canadian version was born.

Of course when I saw that Donair Dude was voted #1 Best Donair/Kebab 2017 in Westender’s annual poll I wanted to check them out as a potential go-to for when the donair craving strikes. We decided to visit their West End restaurant on a Saturday evening, which I believe is their original location. They first opened their shop during the 2010 Olympics and at the time there weren’t any options for donairs in the city. They now have six locations all over the Vancouver area.

Donair Dude is very much a fast food place, so try not to expect anything more than that. They don’t even have very much seating, save for a bit of counter space. It’s more of a grab ‘n go type of establishment. Although I’m always a fan of a quick counter meal, so sitting atop a stool to eat was absolutely fine with me. The majority of the brightly-lit space is taken up by the ordering counter. There isn’t much for decor or ambiance, however I noted the Latin (for some reason) music playing and the large and interesting archival photographs of Vancouver on the wall.

We approached the counter and a friendly staff member was happy to help us. The first thing that I did was take a look at their drinks cooler. Sometimes these types of places will offer really exciting imported beverages, unfortunately no such luck in this case. They did have Coconut Water though, and I was happy to choose that.

DD is obviously famous for their donair wraps, which they offer enveloped in either a pita or a tortilla. A pita is traditional and typical, while a tortilla is more unexpected and akin to a burrito. Either option comes grilled. If (for some reason) you don’t want a wrap, they do offer different options as well, such as rice plates or meal boxes. They serve a few different appetizers as well. We decided to forgo everything else and went straight for the Grilled Pita Donairs ($8.99). They offer a really great combo called the Dude’s Special (2 pitas & 2 pops for $19.99) which is perfect for two people. Similar to most sandwich shops, you are able to customize your donair with exactly the toppings of your choice. First you choose your Meat; chicken, lamb, beef or Halifax. (Halifax is the original way that donairs were served in Canada, with only beef, tomato, onions, and a special sweet sauce that was invented in Halifax.) I selected lamb, by far my favourite type of donair meat. Next you choose your Spreads which consist of; hummus, garlic spread & spicy red pepper paste. Garlic spread and red pepper paste for me! Then it’s time for Toppings; lettuce, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, pineapples, jalapeno peppers, black olives, pickles, tabouli. I had them do lettuce, tomato, cucumbers, black olives and pickles. In the future I would probably try adding the tabouli as well, possibly instead of lettuce. And lots of pickles! Lastly, Sauces; donair sauce, Halifax sweet sauce & hot sauce. I went straight donair sauce. As you can see, there are a lot of options and choices to be made! You can also add cheese or double your meat, if you so choose. Once you’ve customized your perfect donair pita they press the whole (massive!) thing into a grill and serve it up to you piping hot. I’m not kidding when I say that this thing is massive. I couldn’t even finish it! Two people could easily share one, if they wanted to. I was really impressed at the wide array of high-quality ingredients used, especially the nice spreads. Most donair shops that I have visited in the past have been a lot more bare-bones.

Chomping into my giant pita, I was pleased immediately by the big bursting flavours. The pita itself was grilled to a nice crunch but still maintained a bit of chew. The savoury shaved lamb donair meat was seasoned perfectly and was ultra flavourful. Like I mentioned, I really loved the spreads because they added even more huge flavour and seemed to be made by using good recipes. All of the vegetables were bright, crisp and fresh, and their pickles were strong and delicious. I love a good Middle Eastern pickle! Personally, I am not a fan of the sweet type of donair sauce, so I was happy to see that various options were offered. Some shops only do the sweet kind and that’s it. Next time I’ll also add cheese and some hot sauce! This was a really, really good donair. Maybe one of the best that I’ve had.

There isn’t much to the shop itself, but the options available at Donair Dude are vast. You can truly create the best (and biggest!) donair that you’ve ever had and it’ll be delicious. The prices are also incredibly reasonable and the value is excellent. True to form, their shops are open until the wee hours of the morning, just when you need them the most! Need a donair in Vancouver? Look no further.

Good food, the people were very polite. Very reasonable prices for the amount of food you get. We got there hungry and left full! The falafel plate was very fresh and flavorful!

came here at a late night quick bite, and was maybe expecting quite a lot about the items, definitely alright the meat was well seasoned and the sauces are well made as well, the price that they sell is definitely good for the portion in downtown as well, place is somewhat a little bit in between the two main areas of robson and davie. but definitely a good decent bite.

ordered a samosa as well, definitely decent. but the donair is better to me.

One of the better donair shops in vancity. They use large tortilla bread with different flavor options. They give good portions and are always consistent with the quality of their food. Staff are proffesional and helpful (most of the time). Oh and they panini press the donair at the end which is a nice touch.

Go in with no expectations and prepared to be blown. Donair dude is one of my favourite places downtown for a quick fix for under $10. It has become a rule with friends to end the night by getting donair dude. Ambiance of the place could use some work but food quality definitely speaks for the place.

Was expecting a regular donair with a softer donair wrap and a little more on the saucy side but it resembled a pita more. Regardless, the insides were yummy and the donair pita was super filled!

In the West End, donair joints are aplenty but Donair Dude is definitely one of the more popular places.  Open late till 3 am, Donair Dude is a go-to-place for late-night partygoers looking for quick bite to eat before finally heading home. Donair Dude Menu. Donair Dude’s menu consists of grilled pita donairs, grilled tortilla donairs and rice plates which are all under $10!  Build your donair by choosing chicken, lamb, beef, “Halifax Style” or falafael.  You have a choice of spreads including hummus, garlic or spicy red pepper paste.  My tip is to get all three spreads and triple the excitement.  Your tortilla wrap or pita pocket is then stuffed to the max with your choice of toppings and sauce and voilà your donair is complete!  Rice plates are similarly priced and come with pita rice, pita bread and sides like tabouli salad and dolmades.

Craving for donair when I was in the area, walked into Donair King, but the place looks pretty shabby. So I looked up other donair places in the area and this one was fairly close to where I was. The owner(?) was very pleasant and friendly, and the store looks clean. We ordered 2 donair and a drink. I had a chicken donair and my spouse had a lamb donair. Mine was great, but the lamb was too salty. The pportion was BIG.... Bigger than any donair I've ever had. Will definitely go back again.

My new favourite place to eat!. My first visit was somewhat of a disaster due to the number of choices available but the second time I knew what to expect so I was ready. I now have my donair down to a tasty combination that I love and the leftovers are even better (if that is possible) cold the next day. I have a feeling Donair Dude will be seeing a lot of me this summer

Choices include wrapper, pita or one of several types of tortilla shells, then choice of hummus, spicy red pepper spread or a garlic margarine type spread...then choice of a variety of veggies, meat includes chicken, lamb or beef and then hot sauces, tzatziki or sweet sauce then feta or a mozza/cheddar blend...they roll it up, grill it and voila! Deliciousness.

You are the master of your taste destiny here.

There are also several types of plate mixtures you can choose from as well.

It's affordable and the service is fast and friendly...eat in or take out.

Best Donair period. Enough to fill you with left overs for home. Love all the choices and you get to build it the way you like it. To top it off its pressed Panini style. Great value for what you get. I'm back once per month.

Davie Delicious. Usually quantity is not proportional to quality and certainty not to price. Donair breaks all the rules! The service, price, quantity and taste blew our minds!

Dude, where's my meat?!?. When I'm writing a review of a place with "Dude" in the name, it's obligatory that I drop a pop-culture reference to something with "dude" in the title, like the stoner movie "Dude, Where's My Car?" And that's what I was wondering midway through munching my lamb donair from this joint. It wasn't because there was a lack of meat, though. It was all about the distribution.

You see, Donair Dude lets you tell the counter guy what toppings you'd like in your pita, the way Splitz Burgers on Main Street and some other joints do. Way cool! I had so much lettuce, tomato, green pepper, hot peppers, cukes, tabbouleh and other stuff that the meat got shoved to the bottom. It wasn't bad -- in strips like re-compressed shredded meat, no inedible gristly bits but not as flavourful as the fatty lamb you get carved off those rotating skewers. There was enough meat in the half that I didn't eat that night that it made a decent meal the next day after I lugged it up the Grouse Grind in my backpack.

I'll second the opinions of other reviewers that the pita bread comes across as cardboard-y where the edges get doubled over when they press it in the panini grill. Plus charing an extra dollar for feta is bogus, man. And the guys behind the counter, I dunno if they had been sparking some chronic, because I speak pretty good English and they had a hard time comprehending me when I was ordering. But the donair still tasted pretty good for the money, and I wasn't even stoned.

Chicken Shwarma. I'm going to repeat the bottom review. Best donair in Vancouver hands down. I ate half for lunch and took the other half home for dinner. It is cheap for the big portion you get. Double wrapped pita grilled to perfection. Definitely a crave at night...and guess what? They open late!

Delicious Donair - Dude!. After walking around Davie Village for a while, finding a line at both Stepho's and Takis Taverna, I was in need of some great tasting, healthy chow that was priced right - enter the Donair Dude. First off, I'm from outta town - SF, CA so have no idea what a Donair was, although I knew it was middle eastern and like shwerma. I decided on a Grilled lamb donair with a small bit of hummus, lots of veggies but no cheese. Ater all the stuff they put on it, there was no need for cheese. In a matter of about 3 minutes, I was stuffing my face with the most DELICIOUS thing I've eaten in a long time. It was too much for me to finish. Too bad I'm not local. I'd make this place a regular habit!

BEST DONAIR IN VANCOUVER. I am a huge lover of donairs & have been to at least 40 places in the lower mainland. Donair Dude is by far my favourite, for a number of reasons:
- The donairs are double wrapped & slightly grilled so they never get soggy or messy.
- Huge selection of spreads, veggies, & sauces. The sweet sauce is really unique & addicting! I recommend trying it.
- The restaurant is clean & the staff use gloves when handling the food (which is more then can be said about most donair shops in this city)
- Not to mention, their donairs are at least twice the size of other stores like Babylon Cafe for the same price.
Couldn't recommend it more. I'll be back soon to fed my addiction, dude haha.

Great food and service at a low price. I went to Donair Dude on June 13 and it was pretty busy. I wasn't really sure what to expect as I hadn't heard much about the restaurant. My girlfriend and I ordered their large donair special which is 2 large donairs and a coke for $11.99. While I was paying they started making her donair, then someone else walked in and they started making 2 donairs for him, before they made mine. I was a little annoyed as he crashed the line and didn't seem to know either of the people working at the counter but it wasn't a big deal. After I got my donair and sat down, the owner came and gave my girlfriend and I a dessert on the house because he saw what had happened. Service was great, the food was excellent and the portions were large. I will definitely be going back for more.

Located in the heart of the Davie Village, Donair Dude sits among the hundreds of food places in the area. After passing a humorous sign from Vera’s Burgers regarding how nobody can beat their meat (LOOOOL), I headed to Donair Dude to see why the joint (Donair Dude) has received so much praise.  For $7.34, I got “The Halifax”, though it might as well have been a chicken pita lol. I’m still a little unclear what the Halifax is as they ask what kinds of sauces and meat you want anyways, at the end. For the spread, I chose Humus, ordered it with Chicken, and got “White Sauce” on it; I think the white sauce is either yogurt or tahini, not 100% sure though. I really liked how they grilled the pita before putting the toppings into it, as it made it crunchy, almost like a panini/tortilla. Like always, the tabouleh had a very strong flavour (kinda bitter-ish) and contrasted some of the sweetness of the tomatoes. The chicken had a very unique meaty taste, though it seemed a lot of the juices sa
