ChineseBites hosted an event to celebrate 4 decades of dim sum at Pink Pearl. The media event had 50 bloggers and social media influencers attend. Together we went on a culinary journey of Vancouver's signature dim sums at Pink Pearl representing different decades prepared by Dim Sum Chef F.K. Jiang and his team. They're also launching a special 4-month long campaign in support of the Food Bank and Sowers Society.
Disclaimer: I was invited to a media event by Chinese Bites at Pink Pearl Restaurant. All food and drinks were complimentary but opinions are my own. Pink Pearl has been around since the 1980’s and they are now celebrating four decades of dim sum and Chinese cuisine. I’ve heard of Pink Pearl before from my parents but I’ve actually never been there. According to the manager, they closed down for a few years due to a fire and re-opened in 2012 so this was their 5th re-opening anniversary. They are located on E. Hastings near Clark Drive and also easily accessible by public transit. Read on to find out what new dim sum items I discovered!
We had made a large reservation and when we got there, there was a local fundraiser being held. Which isn't a problem at all. But they had not informed us about this event. Often times Pink Pearl is booked for these types of things. With this going on, the quality of the food was not as good as it would have been. Other than that, some of the staff were quite friendly.
Dim sum is considered not bad for the price they charge. There's one thing I like about Pink Pearl is that they don't use too much MSG in their food compared to the other restaurants that I have been to. However, they need to step up and maintain the standard. They are inconsistent at times. I was disappointed on a few occasions because the dim sums that I had were not steamy hot. I enjoy dim sum that is fresh out of the steamer and not sitting in the cart in room temperature.
First time back since the fire for dimsum. Good standard stuff, portions large and tasty.
50/50. It's a shoot and miss. Some years ago I really liked this restaurant but somehow things change, as they do, and too bad it's not as good as it once was. I do however still like it. It's good standard, greasy-spoon, food. A good menu and selection, also some really good traditional style food- not overtly westernized. I'm quite fond of the noodles if anything, may sound strange but it's totally worth it.
Typical Dim Sum. Came here and found the place to be nice but the dim sum was standard fare, nothing special.
Picking out our dim sum from the menu, the guy got our order wrong and we had to get it added on the second attempt.
Good value , great place to bring out of towners to try Dimsum for the first time.
If all I could eat was the deep fried squid and a tea?...I'de be a happy man...the only dish I like there...wait!!...love
