Came here for lunch while waiting for a tire repair nearby. We came at the right time as it became very busy and full shortly after. I ordered a simple tofu vegetables from the lunch menu. Portion side was small but just enough. Taste is good as well
Top notch Chinese food.
Excellent variety of lunch specials that can include a main of choice with soup and rice.
The ever so popular Spicy green beans lived up to expectations, the green bean itself is crunchy coated in an oily glaze with a burst of onion/garlic flavour. It’s sweet & savoury all in one.
The pork fried rice was fragrant & comes in a big serve! The right amount of saltiness & that wok fried flavour round this dish out to be delicious.
The corn soup was a nice warm starter, very wholesome cooked strands of egg whites with pieces of corn & small amount of chicken. Wish it had more chicken in it.
The ‘juicy pork dumplings’ as they call it is delicious. Dumpling bursting with pork soup & pork mince filling. The accompanying vinegar brings the classic to life!
The servers are all very lovely. Bringing tea to your table after you take your seat.
My recommendation- check out the affordable lunch time specials!
Absolutely LOVE this place. Everything about it was good! The Honey Prawn was my absolute favorite. I couldn't stop thinking about it since I've been there. Of course, I tried the Xiao Long Bao, very tasty. The Pan Fried cake with marinated beef had a very crispy outside and beef was not dry at all. Shanghai noodles wasn't too greasy. The prices were not bad at all, for the quality of good. I would definitely go back to try more stuff on the menu!
I visited this restaurant for their lunch specials. For currently less than $10 you get your pick from over a dozen dishes, all of which are served with a bowl of rice and a small bowl of soup (either Hot & Sour or Chicken & Corn). I've had their Sesame Chicken (which I thought was alright) and Sweet & Sour Pork (which I really enjoyed). Their portions are quite generous, and a great value for the price. The service can be a bit dodgy. The food comes quite quickly and the staff are reasonably friendly, but they aren't particularly attentive and do seem to mix up orders quite frequently. Overall, this is a fantastic place for a tasty and affordable lunch that I'd highly recommend visiting!
Sweet & Sour Pork ($9.50):
4/5
I was really quite impressed by the portion size: they give quite a generous amount of pork with very little filler (I'd say that the dish was roughly 90% pork and maybe 10% peppers and onions). Moreover, the pieces of pork were actually very meaty, and was sufficiently tender and juicy. The batter was a tad soggy, but still had some crunch. I stirred the rice in with the pork so that the sweet and tangy sauce provided a great flavour to the rice.
Sesame Chicken ($9.50):
3/5
Once again, the portion was very generous. Although the flavour the dish was very good (sweet and tangy with a nice fragrance from the toasted sesame seeds), I was unfortunately a bit disappointed by the chicken. First of all, the batter was quite soggy and had lost most of its crunch. Moreover, while there were a few large pieces, the majority of the chicken were quite small and did not have much meat, but was mostly batter. This was still tasty, but a big step down from their great sweet & sour pork.
Chicken & Corn Soup:
Again the soup had a thick, cornstarch-thickened texture. It contained some eggs, corn and had a nice fragrance from chicken broth. I personally preferred this over the Hot & Sour soup.
Hot & Sour Soup:
The soup was thick (probably thorugh cornstarch) and had some bamboo shoots, mushrooms and egg. Flavour-wise it was mildly tangy without much heat. It wasn't bad, but nothing that I'd order on its own.
My girlfriend and I keep hearing good comments about lin's on Broadway. We decided to give it a try one afternoon. Luckily it wasn't busy, we got seated right away. We ordered the soup dumplings, but longs noodle house is still the best in the city. None the less, still delicious. The beef roll was dine nicely, not heavy or greasy. Then the beef Shanghai meat ball. This is definitely a dish to be shared, it's huge. I can't imagine eating this all alone without having the meat sweats LOL.
Overall, service was on the slow side, but not rude.
Prices are fair for the West end.
Tbh I don't like Chinese food that much but this place is definitely good. I like the way they make their dumplings; they look really nice and they have a good amount of flavor. Their veggie dumplings don't have noodle and tofu bits like other veggie dumplings I've had, but it was good; it had a fresher taste. I also got the noodles with veggie roots, which I thought was a pretty unique dish.
Their soup dumplings here are pretty good and at a reasonable price! But what really stood out to me was their signature noodle soup dish in chili oil sauce.. Soooooo bomb. I don't usually opt for noodles as I am never a huge fan, but this was it!!! Every bite I could tell the noodles were soft and made fresh and the broth was sooooo yummy!!!
The dumplings were probably my favourite thing of the night and I wish I could have eaten a whole basket to myself. The dumplings were a good size, not too large or small, and were very juicy. Green Onion Halibut. This was another favourite dish of mine for the night. The halibut was flakey and moist and the green onion sauce was delicious
I must have passed by Lin Chinese Cuisine countless of times on my commute to UBC back in the day. Because of their location at West Broadway and Granville, I assumed that their Chinese food would be more accustomed to Western tastes. Being that my hometown is Richmond, I was accustomed to the Chinese restaurants in Richmond serving closely authentic dishes. Last month, I was excited to attend a media event organized by Chinesebites.com at Lin Chinese Cuisine. I finally got the chance to try their dishes and find out what they are about.
Every Day Is A Food Day
+3.5
NOTE: As part of the ChineseBites media event, all food and beverages were free, but all opinions are based on my own experience. Lin Chinese Cuisine and Tea House is just a few blocks down from my office on West Broadway and we usually order take out here during busy season. From my previous experience, it wasn’t exactly the greatest, so I was curious to see what there was to offer during the ChineseBites media event.
To be honest, the food is pretty good here but the service is sub par. Our favorite thing to order is the XLB - the dough is thin and the dumplings are very juicy and tasty. We also always order the szechuan green beans and the Shanghai rice cakes. The potstickers here are also great.
Came here for lunch and my favourite was the panfried cake with marinated beef which was not overly hoisin sauced but had an extremely flaky and flavourful green onion wrap that was surprisingly NOT GREASY!! XLB were decent being less than a dollar each but a little bit salty. Seczhuan beef noodle soup was good with a nice amount of heat, great handmade noodles and 4 pieces of large beef shank while tea smoked duck had very little meat but came with steamed white buns were very good! Lastly, shanghai meatballs were very fatty but came in a large portion. Overall good Shanghainese food but wouldn't come down here on purpose to eat it.
Must try XLBs!. I need to start off by saying this is one of the worse customer service restaurants ever. but the food is cheap and yummy. so if you don't mind the old school Asians yelling and ignoring you then do give this place a try!
Amazing Shanghai Buns. Great Shanghai shai long bai along with their hot and sour soup. The soup is a must try especially in this cold weather, large portion and very reasonable priced.
Service is a hit and miss, but good overall.
Plenty of meter parking in the area. Will definitely be coming back.
Honestly, this may not be the most friendly place or service you may be use to in regular western resurfaces. The food was good and the lady was friendly and did what needed. You just have to approach them with an open heart and patience you know ;) would recommend this place!
Damn good chinese. Lin's is awsome.
I know the service sucks sometimes, maybe even all the time, but I just don't care. The food is worth it and its cheap to boot. If your a person that just can't handle bad service just get takeout.
Bejing style meat cakes are a personal favorite of mine but i have found after eating 80% of the menu it is pretty much all good.
Most of their dishes like honey prawn, kung pao chicken, Beijing beef cake, xiao long bao, beef noodle soup, etc are all good! service is lacking though but good food at decent prices almost make up for it
Xiao long bao. The xiao long bao was the best along with the wonderful service
My review. The service was magnificent and the food was fantastic especially the hot and sour soup
Xiao long bao were delicious and service was excellent!
One of the best. Lin is one of the best Chinese restaurants in GVA. It has arguably the best Shanghai soup dumpling around and offers terrific value and selection. The drunken chicken and the Chinese meatballs are also great, not to mention the House honey prawns. The only downside is its service staff....some of them need to be more clientcentric and more polite
The four of us had: ginger beef, shanghai noodles, fried rice, 3 orders of juicy pork soup dumplings an green beans. Everything was tasty. Never tried ginger beef before! Had a nice crispy/slightly sticky and sweet texture/taste. Green beans were addictive, shanghai noodles nice and chewy and the dumplings were great. Fried rice wasn't memorable. Fast and friendly service.
AWESOME food makes up for RUDE waitress!. The food at Lin is simply awesome. fresh and always very tasty. the chicken noodle soup is a staple item for us...plus the vegetarian steamed buns, the honey prawns, the chicken cashew, and the beef rolls.....but definitely NOT the rude, incredibly rude, waitress. it's all good. the great food makes you forget about the pain of having to deal with her, really!!! worth a trip!
Good food. I love the food, especially the in-store made dumplings! I go there regularly and have tried a fair share of the menu. I enjoy most of the items and they are very reasonably priced. One of my complaints is that the service is not good. The place is always busy and it appears that the waiter/ waitress are running off their feet. If you don't mind reminding them what you need, this might be a place to go for good food. Another complaint would be the cleanliness of the washroom. Honestly, I don't use the washroom there. Sounds like a lot of negatives but I still give this place a high mark for the food and value.
Pick your time. On Hallowe'en I had supper here with a friend, after previous visits for lunch only. What a difference. Lunch is always good, the place packed, the service as quick as it can be - which isn't all that quick. For latish dinner on a night when everyone is out doing something, Lin Chinese Cuisine was sparsely occupied. There are various theories about restaurant eating "when the wok is hot" or not. I wondered what Lin, so accustomed to being full, would be like when almost empty.
We were greeted immediately (one is always greeted immediately) and given our choice of seating - desirable, for elbow room - given menus, provided with tea. After that, service was as usual - slow. Interesting. But it gave us a chance to savour tea which is superior to any I've had elsewhere in Chinese Vancouver.
Consultation with the menu was easy, but raised questions - how spicy-hot is the Szechuan chicken? Can it be had with steamed spinach? What exactly is the two-kinds of mushrooms with greens? Our server wasn't sure about any of this (probably a language issue, since we don't speak Chinese) and sent the Head Lady over. She is a dragon, but she certainly knows her stuff - and unfortunately brooks no opinion. Steamed spinach is not on. The chicken comes with pan-fried spinach, and that's how it is. It is as spicy-hot as you like, or not at all. The greens are Shanghai bok-choy. (I forget the names of the mushrooms.)
We started with Wor Won-ton soup for two, which was complex and savoury, but more "fishy" in flavour than it should have been. Then the chicken arrived, beautifully presented red-gold morsels generously heaped on a thick bed of - pan-fried spinach. Crispy and tangy to accompany the most delicate Szechuan chicken I've met, mild for my friend's palate but redolent with the flavour of hot peppers nonetheless.
The mushrooms and greens appeared, even more a delight to the eye than the chicken, translucent greens and dense mahogany-browns shining as though lit from within. I don't have the language to describe the flavours, but they too were delicate, crisply precise and brilliantly counterpointing the bok-choy and the subtly distinct fungal delights. A luminous discovery with such a banal name on the menu that I'd feared boredom.
The moral of this experience, as far as I'm concerned, is that Lin is a great place for lunch, but go there for supper when it's no more than half full, when the wok-master has time to relax and play Mozart with his ingredients. This meal was the first time I've understood that the famously French style of Vietnamese cuisine really does have origins in masterful "Northern and Szechuan" technique.
Good Food but portions on the small side. Went here for dinner and we ordered 4 dishes. The one dish that stood out was the Beijing style chicken fenpi (mungbean pasta) salad. It was really tasty with lots of sesame paste but it was not stuck together at all and it also had a good amount of chicken mixed in it. XLB were a little smaller than the ones we had in other places. It did have a nice thin outer layer and was still able to manage to keep the juice inside. A good vegetable dish would be the Szechwan style fried green bean. We also ordered the Sesame Chicken but we didn't really enjoy this dish much. It taste very much like sweet and sour pork. We don't really like the westernized chinese dishes. Our recommendation is def. the Chicken Fenpi.
Honey prawns!. Finally got to check out this restaurant. The honey walnuts were delicious - crunchy and fresh tasting. Crispy exterior (not over battered) and perfectly sauced. The xab bai was delicious -love the broth and soft thin skin held it all in without breaking. I thought the service was pretty good too.
Juicy dumplings are amazing of course and so are the Honey Prawns!
Love the food here.. Lin's is one of my favorite restaurants. The ginger beef is nice and crispy with a hint of spice. The orange chicken is so flavourful and fresh tasting. And the Sezchun Green Beans are hot and spicy. Definitely recommend checking this place out if you have not already done so.
Good Shanghai Food. It's a pretty busy place during lunch and if you've eaten there, it's not hard to see why. The quality of the cooking is good and the flavours are spot on. Makes my top five Shanghai restaurants in the Lower Mainland.
Wonderful Food, Good Portions, Service Needs Some Refining. Introduced through the recommendation of a friend who never fails to point out a haunt someone might normally pass by. Went with a large party of (12). Ordered two soups, lettuce wraps (enough for everyone), and a varied list of entrées. All were done very well; excellent portions and very good flavor. A surprise dish were the Honey Prawns. The prawns alone will have us coming back again to ensure this was no fluke.
Service was decent. The staff's demeanor was great while ordering or when you had them at the table. But we found basic fundamentals of waiting tables a bit wanting. Had to ask often for water glasses to be refilled as well as the teapots. As we ordered a lot of entrées and were passing them around, the dishes piled up quick and often they would bring more without removing the emptied plates unless we asked. But this isn't at all a reason to not try their cuisine and we will be going back. They did mean well, always had a smile, and were genuinely interested in our experience. It was just the basics that fell short.
Prices are outstanding.
Dumplicious. We went to Lin's in the mood for both xiao long bao (Bob Blumer filmed here during a Glutton episode) and wonton. The xiao long bao was awesome and did not disappoint. Not as mouth burning hot as I'm used to, but the flavour was killer. When we tried to order wonton the proprietor steered us away (not know why) and suggested a chicken veggie noodle soup dish. We also got the green onion pancake as an appy and I got the tan tan mein as a main. Those dishes were not as remarkable but would come back just to have the amazing xiao long bao again.
Lin's is a gem. They have good lunch specials. Really good hot and sour soup. And for dinners, a group of us sampled their xiao long bao which are basically mini steamed pork buns with broth and have to say, they make one of the best ones in town, better than most Shanghainese restaurants in Richmond. Another favourite is their fried honey prawns, have to say that this dish is rich so not too much or you'll over do it cuz its sweet and rich. Another dish to recommend is their crispy fried chicken which in essence is deep fried chicken that reminds me of small pieces of nuggets but more tender and flavourful, highly highly recommended. I would give their house special fried rice a miss as last time we had it , it was flavourless but the second plate of honey prawns more than made up for it. Overall, I'd recommend Lin's for a cheap delicious lunch or a fun group dinner. Service is friendly and the staff are more than willing to recommend some of their famous dishes. It gets crowded so go early as their regulars come here, and they sure do come often and fill the restaurant even on a weeknight!
Food good, service poor. The service is really slow (probably an understatement) but I always find myself coming back because I really enjoy their juicy dumplings and tan tan noodles. You really have to be patient to eat here. I literally have to wave down a server for any sort of attention. I hope they hire more servers before they lose their customers.
Best soup dumplings. I went there for dinner with a few friends. We ordered the famous soup dumplings. All of us think the quality of this dish is almost the same as the ones in China. We ordered a few more dishes, such as chinese braised meatballs, beef noodles, Beijing style cold noodles, and fried spicy green beans. All are exceptionally done. The manager there was very funny too as he told us some jokes when he served the dishes. This is the place to go if you want to try authentic northern chinese food.
It's tough to find good lemon chicken but these guys do it right. I liked the chow mein too.
Best kept secret. It's on a busy street corner, Granville and W.Broadway, not a place you'd expect to find good Chinese food, but hot damn the food is tasty! You won't be disappointed by any of the authentic northern Chinese dishes. Yes, I eat here weekly. Table layout and decor are not date night material but if you just want a good meal with friends or take-out, you'd be hard pressed to find a better tasting and great value restaurant.
My sister told me she sees Lin’s Chinese Cuisine and Tea House pack full everytime she pass by. That’s’ the only excuse I needed to go visit and have a feast there. :) I was there during peak hours for dinner but the restaurant was not packed at all. However, the take-out line was never ending. Lin’s is a Chinese restaurant specialize in Shanghai cuisine. As starters, we ordered Beijing style chicken fenpi (mungbean pasta) salad ($7.99). Fenpi (mungbean pasta) is a noodle with a chew texture. It is transparent in colour and has no taste. This is a cold “salad” dish with cucumber, chicken, and a spicy savoury sauce. The first thing you would do to this salad dish is to mix it well. This is to ensure the fenpi gets the sauce. Another starter I absolutely love is the pan-fried green onion cake ($4.99). This is a very thin pancake made with a dough that has green onion mixed into it. No filling inside. The green onion gives a very nice flavour and smell to the pancake. It is very addictive
We have no room left for dessert. Tilt, full, bursting with goodness in our bellies, we are done. It’s time to pack up a small doggie bag and head home happy and sated. I’m so glad that I discovered Lin Chinese Cuisine and Tea House because the next time I’m craving XLB I know where I can find some of the best just 10 mins from my Yaletown condo. I’m a very happy camper.
They are well known for their steamed pork buns, it even made it on to the menu's cover and the waitress strongly recommended them. They were doughy and moist and noticeably steamed to order. The pork was shredded and still a little pink.
It is not necessarily a dim sum menu, but enough interesting dishes to sample as dim sum that are definitely unique to this place that is very quickly climbing up to make it into my Favourite Places (need to try it one more time to be sure).
The xiao long bao here are one of their signature dishes and they have won awards for them. These lived up to the hype for me and I thought they were very delicious. The dumplings were super juicy, even more so than other versions I have had and the dumpling skin had the perfect amount of thickness. These are definitely a must try if you come here. I also had the vegetarian tan ta
Lin’s is frequented by many regulars. It has a solid customer base and is often very busy on the weekends. Everyone always orders the xiao long bau and it is very good. Though I took a pic, it didn’t turn out very well. They’re good though. You can watch the ladies forming them through the glass partition located in front of the kitchen.
... the long awaited xlbs. The skin was pretty thin, the soup was plentiful, I see what the big deal is now. These were pretty darn good! I’m glad we ended up ordering 2 of these, as I just wanted to eat more!
All in all, a nice place to visit and one I would go again. I hope we get to try the Radish Cake and Happy Family Hotpot as they look really good on Chowtimes. The service was also pretty good, as we were seated behind a wall and they still managed to get
They were made fresh, but we had a first batch that was a little under par, sticky and broke the soup seal. The rest were good and quite flavourful.
Lin Chinese Cuisine is well known for their amazing Xiao Long Bao and Noodle soups! They have won multiple awards for their amazing food and chefs. This place is usually packed during the peak hours and caters to small and large groups. The prices are very affordable! MedicalGiraffe was back in town again and craved some good ol Chinese food since she's been deprived of it for the past few months. There are lots of tables, but it's always good to make reservations. Since there are so many tables, sometimes the seating can get quite cramped. Tea is the way to go! Tan Tan noodle soup with minced meat ($6.59) was really good. It was my first time I've ever had dandan noodles. The broth had a nice rich flavour and the addition of the meat made it really good. It wasn't very spicy at all. MedicalGiraffe really liked it too. The broth is probably not the healthiest, but it does taste good. I'm not a dandan expert since this is the first time I've had it….so i'm not sure how it's really sup
"Delicious" and " Tasty" is probably the best two words to describe the food at Lin Chinese Cuisine. I am a big fan both the Xiao Long Bao, Honey Prawns, and Beijing Style Meat Cakes. The flavors are remarkable! Xiao Long Bao - These delicate dumplings are filled deliciousness! They were very juicy as well. Beijing Style Meat Cake - These meat cakes were pan fried. They had a somewhat doughy texture. These were very juicy as well. Hot and Sour Soup Honey Prawns - Deep fried, crunchy prawns, smothered delicious honey sauce. Smoked Duck Shanghai Style Rice Cakes I could go on and on about how tasty the food is, but I think that if you enjoy Chinese food, you should definitely check Lin Chinese Restaurant out. The price of food is quite reasonable for the amount and quality of food you receive.
I had been wanting to try some proper xiaolongbao for awhile, so we took a rather long (and stuffy) bus ride to Lin's based on all the positive buzz surrounding the place.
Lin Chinese Cuisine recently won some award for something or other.. I forgot where I read it, and I forgot what they won for, but I knew they were a shanghai dimsum joint, and that was reason enough to visit when I realized it was nearby the Chinese visa
I've always had a soft spot for Chinese food; it's tasty to the point of being addictive, satisfying without being too filling, and varied enough that everyone can find something they like. I imagine that more than a few people share this opinion and will
