Review Shabusen Yakiniku House - Vancouver

Jun Yuan
Although I didn’t have time to try the BBQ, had Sushi instead. The service was attentive and quick. The orders came in within 5 mins after giving the order. The food was prepared fresh and tasty! The quantity was not too big but enough for me! Will come back again to try the BBQ! Highly recommended!

Contrary to other previous bad reviews, mine is a different one. We were suppose to have a booking at another yakiniku place but it had a fire emergency so we rushed here at Shabusen. Upon arrival, we were seated in 5 minutes I was here with my wife and sons. The food that they made were all very delicious. Service is very quick, and we got what we want as soon as we ordered. So I ended up with a happy heart and left 20% tip. The man who served us was very attentive and friendly. So, my kids loves it, we love it. Therefore, we will be back for more! Very good value too!!! 2 adults 2 kids eat all you can, we spent around $150 including tax.

This place is fantastic! A wonderful experience with great service and fresh delicious food. Located right downtown. Super fun atmosphere. All you can eat dinner is $40.99 - worth it. We were two people and with a large bottle of asahi it was $98. Totally great experience and delicious meal.

Amazing Experience!!! I came early because I was super hungry!! The food was amazing and fresh ! My waitress was friendly and took pictures for me . Dinner starts at 5 pm and all you can eat is $38.99 . I didn't order any meat . I just wanted Sushi ! Cones and rolls . I left happy and full !! What a great night in Downtown Vancouver!!!

It's all you can eat. You grill your own meats so it's kinda fun. The food is okay but of very average quality and taste. Totally a quantity over quality place. You will be very full. It's alright.

Our orders got throttled harder than my internet at home. If I wanted to play waiting simulator, I would have installed it off Steam. The food was subpar, but I was expecting that. What I wasn't expecting was to wait 30 minutes for half my order to be lost multiple times. I think we left having received half of the food we had ordered. Let's also talk about the grill. The flames gathered on one side of the grill and the heat spread very unevenly. Half our meat would be charred while the other half would be raw. It was truly a marvel of science. Service is like any Chinese restaurants. If you know, you know. Overall, never coming here again and you should also never come here :)

The only Japanese/Korean buffet restaurant along Burrard St. Food is reasonably priced. I always come here for meat barbecue and my own option to include sashimi into the barbecue half-cookef. It's a nice place, but not the best in ambiance. Otherwise, they would charge more. Washroom is available. Parking though is an issue. Curbside metered parking is available as being normal in Downtown Vancouver. Underground parking on nearby buildings.

We went here on a weekend (price is differenton a weekday). Price is reasonable for an "eat all you can". Service and food is ok, grill cook your own meat. A lot of Paid parking is available (I don't know on a weekday). It's on the second floor, you can choose to use the stairs or the elevator. Accessible to persons with disabilities. Covid protocol is observed.

There are much better places and food in Vancouver. Don't waste your money by going there. The staff are so slow and rude. If you leave a tip less than they expect they will not hesitate to say "never come back again"

Had dinner with a group of 10 people for a friend’s birthday celebration. The restaurant is very busy, staff are friendly, attentive and accommodating. The food was good and delicious but the Miso soup is cold. Washroom is a bit small for a busy restaurant. It’s very expensive but still highly recommended to try.

food is great with decent amount and a lot of choice for a $24 lunch buffet (tips+tax). Service is average as it was busy. The boss/manager/owner was very rude. We noticed he stared at us several times while we were eating and keep approaching to ask if we are finished with our food (it's an AYCE, and I am sure we ordered the proper amount). In the end, he came to say we should go to the front desk to pay, and added the tips to our bill. I won't mind giving tips but we had a very bad experience.

Shabusen's location on the second floor nearly threw a friend and I walking around as we nearly missed it. We went upstairs on a Thursday afternoon to try out their AYCE lunch menu. For $16-18, it's hard to complain when it has KBBQ and some Japanese dishes on it. We were immediately seated since the restaurant was about 3/4 full.

The menu seemed fairly large for an AYCE lunch. 8 pieces of sashimi each was good. I found the salmon to be fresh and good, however I did not enjoy the tuna sashimi. Cooked food overall was a highlight. It's funny though, they just plopped down the raw food on our table and put in a grill, then silently and casually walked off. My friend and I were stunned by it and eventually after a few minutes figured out that there was nothing else needed and how to turn it on ourselves. The food itself was average, however the price justified it.

Service was average. Nothing too great, nothing too bad besides that incident above. I'd come here for a quick AYCE lunch sushi fix when I'm downtown. All in all, recommended.

Half decent all you can eat menu but the price is outrageous for the quality of their food. Unless you're a monster eater, it would be cheaper to buy a la carte. Service is non existent, waiters were rude and utterly uninterested in our group of 10. Cool interior was the only nice thing, we sat in a "boat". At the end of the day 3 people got bad food poisoning so definitely would not return or recommend this place to anyone.

Not a good idea to eat here in a share table, orders get mix up. *1sttymcominghere*A very bad idea so if they ask u if u want to share table say no.
DanoRama
Worst all you can eat menu I've seen. Pathetic selection of rolls, sashimi and hot items. Items such as pork galbi, oyster motoyaki, scallop roll, spicy tuna roll, prawn tempura are all non existent if you plan to eat here for lunch. Service was non existent as well. They came to collect the order sheet, that's it. Didn't even clear any plates during our meal. Awful.

If I could I would give this restauraunt NO stars. I understand that this establishment is all you can eat and at that point you already should expect sub par service. This does not however excuse the rudeness or the poor people skills that the workers at this restauraunt have. I had a server snatch something out my hand while walking by, and another who gave me attitude when I said that we did not order something. I clearly remember what I ordered and that was not on there.

Last but not least, as I was leaving and I had finished paying right when I almost walked out, the woman says to me: "excuse me, you aren't going to tip?!" the to which I rightly responded that no I was not because the service was horrible. I work in the service industry, I've worked with terrible guests and forced a smile and nodded. Never have I ever questioned a guests tip if it was too little let alone if they did not tip me. I can not believe they had the audacity to even ask. Me and my friends are NEVER coming here again. This was UNACCEPTABLE.

So disgusted and off putting.
Timothy Perry
I have never seen someone including the tip themselves and asking to pay the amount. Very bad service for that. That takes away some stars. The grill doesn't burn properly. That said the people working are quiet nice except for the person who collected our bill. The food was great as the taste too.

We have been going to Shabusen first in its previous Granville location and its current Burrard location for years. Never fails us. Hot delicious shabu shabu and sushi is good and fresh. Try lunch as it's less expensive and the food selection is almost as good!

This place seems to be packed every time I go having to wait for around 15-30 minutes. It is certainly a fun experience being an all you can eat Japanese restaurant. You get the to "bbq" your own meat, order tons of sushi etc. As far as quality, I would rate it as average. There are better places out there but this seems to be busy due to its location.

i must say, this is my new favourite all you can eat places hands down in vancouver at the moment, with the weekend lunch being $18, it's definitely a bargain for me, with the options of korean bbq and sushi oh my, i can't be any happier, so all the pictures this time that i upload are the one that is done in a single seating in an all you can eat lunch. what i love about this place is the cut of sashimi is massive! it's like they know you're here for a reason, and they satisfy your craving to eat a lot. :)) they know us big eaters too much. and at the same time i must say their weekend lunch, because there's korean bbq meat, the seasoning/marinated meat is definitely good, and the meat is definitely alright for all you can eat quality. and the staff are definitely good, the food comes out within 15 minutes when i was there so definitely good. will come back again for sure. there are a lot more dishes but wasn't able to find them at the moment.
Jentaro
They have the best tasting kimchi (absolutely delicious) and I love their teriyaki chicken roll. However, the service wasn't too good. Although it was an AYCE, they stop serving after around two orders. You can never find any servers and even when they take your requests they seem to forget about it (like getting an extra pair of chopsticks, etc). Although the food is good, I don't think it's worth such high price.
Murg Wurgle
Not many places do Yakiniku in Vancouver; Shabusen is the best downtown AYCE and it delivers exactly what it promises. Lots of choice, some really good sushi, and a big hole in the table to cook your meats. I've had better food, but not AYCE, and I leave here satisfied every time.
Alice Yuan
Always super busy. Took 3 tries to book an reservation for a weekend dinner. Food was average and restaurant was very cramped. But it's a good place to go with a large group. It's a fun experience overall.

Today my girl friend and I decided to go to Shabusen as we had heard some great reviews. On arrival a group of 4 waiters looked at me and my girl friend and walked away giving us dirty looks. It took 10 minutes before one of the 4 waiters returned picking up a menu saying "2?" Which i said yes and he began walking away. Confused we followed him and he took us to our seats. We then ordered our food and enjoyed everything BBQ was a very fun experience. Until the end of our service where we went up to pay and the female server told me that she was unable to split the check and that individually our dinner was $30 including the tip and and so I began paying a little frustrated about her telling me I had to leave a $5 tip. Which again she later explained to me that I have to leave a minimum of a 10% tip. I would suggest managment hire some new staff you have a great gem here i hate to see it get ruined by a few erigant employees.

I was starving today so I hit up Shabusen. It's an all you can eat (AYCE) sushi joint and if you order correctly, it's not half bad!
Lcli1
This is the dirtiest worse tasting restaurant ever.... Don't go here I repeat, don't go here, service was super bad, in fact no service at all, sashimi was warm and slimy, they NEVER clean the BBQ grill. Big disappointment...
Chrisvoisin
Good food bad service. Title says it all. Food was good, great selection and quality. Sashimi, bbq meats, apps. Service was bad though. Not polite slow table clearing asked twice two different times for more water. We were barely there an hour and felt rushed out even when it wasn't busy that night. Expect better service for the price. An occasional smile can do wonders

Do not go this place!. Very bad service attitude! dirty...
The_muncher
Good place for BBQ. Been going here for a couple of years now, and I keep going back. Every time I bring it up to friends for a place to eat there isn't any debate. Great food and the novelty of BBQing will always be a big draw-in for me. Great place and will always go back for more!!

Expensive, bad food, bad service. The service was terrible. The cqshier forced us to pay 15% but we didnt because he was being rude. The food is really bad quality and charge way too much. In comparison kyo is way better
Kendra Iesha Gosman
They obviously don't care about giving good costumer service and losing clients.
Seanmckenna1982
Customer service. My girlfriend just tried to make a reservation with this resturant and was treated very rudely and was not given the respect she deserves i will never eat there again and i recomend no one else does unless they want shoddy service and to be treated like second class citizens
Mayukohara
Ok place. It's ok for when you just crave meat, otherwise I wouldn't really eat here. The service was nice, but the food quality is a bit below average. Maybe it's just me, but I don't like sweet meat. The tuna sashimi tasted funny as well. To be fair, it was really cheap. Lunch all you can eat was around $13. I don't think you can find a cheaper all-you-can-eat sushi/barbeque place in Vancouver.
Lois Magellan
There were four of us. My friend made the reservation, and we were seated quickly. I got the Korean dinner box (pork bulgogi) for $9.95. The pork was not very warm when it got to me, and lacked flavour. The kimchi was spicy, and nothing else. Quite disappointed with the food. Then, one of the staff kept asking us if we were done, when clearly, we were not. Eventually, we finished, and pretty much for rushed to the counter to pay. Don't think I'll be back at all.

Dont eat the sushi !. I know this place has been in the business for a while. I think the only reason for this place to be so popular in terms of customer flow is that they offer both sushi AYCE and korean BBQ AYCE. However, the sushi quality is so bad specially those items involved Tuna in it. They taste so weird and makes me wonder if those tuna are sashimi grade or not ! The menu does not have many selections to choose from and I guarantee that you will be disappointed by some of their sushi items! BBQ is eatable .
JaniceyyP
The customer service is terrible. They forgot our reservation :(
Charlie Yurwog
WORST SERVICE EVER!!! Tea w.... WORST SERVICE EVER!!!
Tea was cold, horrible service, staffs were rude and The MANAGER/OWNER learn how to approach ur customers and not being disrespectful. Btw to the owner/manager ( the bald guy with glasses) don't ask us if we are sure about the order, we ordered how much we can eat. You don't have to come to the table and tell us if we want to shorter the order and stare at us while we Are eating. This is buffet right.
Jensmileyface
This is not a typical Korean barbeque place. The food is typical japanese sushi and korea food but the service and experience was quite excellent.

The price is on the pricy side but for an all you can eat meal, it is worthwhile.

I would consider go back again but definitely will not crave it in the near future
Vanishedintheair
I've there few times with co-workers. Everytime the service was terrible. I would no go there with my friends.
Evan Friday
The lunch all you can eat is totally worth it. Me and a friend ate through everything on the menu but the BBQ chicken.

Complaints of poor service are totally off. We had amazing service right in the middle of lunch hour, an amazingly polite server.

The spicy tuna was a way bigger portion than I anticipated. I recommend BBQ beef over pork, as pork charred more due to the fat. Sunomono salad was actually really refreshing, great meal ender.
John Smith
Friends dragged me there. just not my thing.
Russel S
The service was bad, and they forgot to mention that they serve their tuna sashimi "frozen"... I almost puked
BigEater
Had a dinner with few friends last night. The service was bad, it really took long enough for our food on the table. The server seems to forget some items we ordered. The sushi tasted bad, I had some hard rice in my sushi which made me really hard to swallow. The meats were ok, but their grill was really dirty. Overall, shabusen is just so so, not much improvement over these years.Even the new one on Granville is better! I will go to other place for the money and food.
Annie Chu
My favourite AYCE restaurant, their oyster motoyaki is some of the best I've ever had. Hate how you can't ever expect to eat their without making reservations though.

Everytime we have been we LOVED it

About their chicken teriyaki..... Everything was great ...except the chicken teriyaki
quality is not steady everytime i get it.

first dish might come out right..then...later...and later..you know how it goes.

But still I'd give it a 7/10 restaurant.

Dinner with the Girls. I was at a conference and met with friends that I rarely get to see unless I'm in Vancouver. We went to this place for dinner and it was a lovely surprise of Korean and Japanese food. You had the centre grill for all the meat you ordered along with the long list of menu items that you could choose all night long for the buffet price of $23 per person (does not include tax or tip).
Spoonmaster
Lots of food. AYCE during lunch emphasize quantity over quality and boy is there lots of food and boy is the quality poor.
Kev
So so. I tried many Japanese restaurant in Vancouver. Overall, AYCE in Vancouver is not as good as other international city. t's hard to find other sushi and sashimi than Salmon and Tuna. needs more varierity of nigiri sushi. The same thing goes with Shabusen as well.
Where's a good Japanese AYCD that goes well with the image of vancouver?

Great for Groups! but Ave food. You will have tons of fun if you go as a group to the "all you can eat" . but the food is Okay...
Love Food
What Happened to all the good restuarants. My sister wanted to take our parents here for christmas eve. We were seated pretty promptly and the service was okay. I was so hungry and did not realize we had to cook our own food. I ended up eating 3 raw mussels until they told me it was raw and that I had to cook it. Sashimi came but they weren't the best quality. Variety was lacking and the environment was cold and dirty. I wouldn't go back there. Too bad the Granville location closed down. They were better.
Terence Fung
Okay - average. - price average, on the higher end.
- food quality not bad. Has good diverse of choices
- wouldnt purposely go into the area to eat but if I were hungry and want diverse of dishes then ya, I will wander in.
Andy Wong
Not good for AYCE Korean BBQ. For the price of the AYCE ($24), selection is not that great with a variety of mostly Japanese and Korean BBQ items.

It seemed that the BBQ grill wasn't cleaned which made it hard to cook anything on it without getting charred stuff on the raw food.

Japanese portions tasted okay but no udon or even prawn tempura (but they have Prawn Tempura sushi)

Main draw here is the Coffee Jello with evaporated milk which is delicious.
Posh Food Critic
Tasty food but poor service!. Food is very tasty, unfortunately the service needs a bit of work. The servers don't come around fast enough to check if you have more orders and they do tend to forget some of your orders so you have to make sure that you keep track of what you ordered on another sheet to see what they didn't bring you.
Lena
Decent Food. Went with a group of around 11 people for Sunday brunch and they set us up in the private room, which just barely fit us. It was hard to flag staff down sometimes, but they were attentive and the manager himself would come from time to time to ask how things were :)

As for the food, it came quickly enough and surprisingly, as we ordered. At our request, they let us use all 4 grills on the table, though one grill had a problem with the temperature and could only do "low" setting the entire meal. The BBQ was pretty flavourful and the cooked food off the AYCE menu tasted decent.

Value wise, it's a bit more expensive than the average AYCE place but in my opinion, worth it for good service and decent food.
Herb
Good value and love the oyster motoyaki. Its not going to be the best food, but it might well be the best value. Oyster motoyaki is a west coast tradition that I am dying for east of the big rocks.

Big note is that the guy at the door is soooo unpleasent that it bears mentioning. But when the service is bad and the place has been around for ever you know it must be good!
Stuart
Staff are sad, rude and service SUCKS. Went for luck with out of town work friends.

Great spot!. Come here for lunch regularly whilst on a break. Fast service, goood food and variety and great korean bbq! price is not too bad either!

Pretty fantastic!!!! I rave about this restaurant.. Everywhere I go, everywhere I moved to, I will tell people about the all you can eat Korean bbq and sushi at Shabusen.

this is the place i absolutely love.
by far my favorite.
beats misatos kitchen in kelowna, althought Shabusen is much pricier, it is so worth it.
Service is mediocre but who cares because all they really have to do is bring out the food we check off and fill up my tea.
I love it here. Its delicious. Its been great everytime, and we go here almost every year for my birthday.
You leave disgustingly full, but when you see all this delicious food come out in front of ya, you just can't help it!

I'm surprised their ratings aren't higher. People are too hard on restaurants like these because of their prices, I noticed that people are so much easier on restaurants that are cheaper that serve you half decent meals.
I dont care much for fancy restaurants but Shabusen is totally worth my money.
I dont understand why people are complaining about the pricing here because I find it quite reasonable. Look at the quality and freshness of the food! If you are eating your money's worth which is easily two plates of sashimi and a plate of bbq meat, if ANYTHING, they are underpricing! Come on now.
Places like Shabusen, do not need to worry about ratings like these because being packed every night with a 30 min wait list goes to show that a not so good percentage cant hurt em. They are too good to care.
Good service, great food, excellent atmosphere.
Keep up the good work.

PRO SHABUSEN!

Shabusen. Love their menu
their pricing is on the higher end, but the quality and variety is worth it
i love their gyoza
this restaurant is my favourite all you can eat place, especially since their gyoza quality is better than all the other all you can eat places i have tried
i love their jap chae appitizers
it's a cold and sweet dish
the only downside is that there are no udon on the menu
overall, i love this place

Best place to come for sushi virgins.... I've turned into a sushi whore after eating here. Clean, classy and fair priced... bravo
Rob
CHEAP. So, would a bring a date to lunch to this place? Mmmm, maybe not, but a group of friends going for a cheap lunch, well that's another matter. Man, the sashimi was descent, and the bbq was fun, so for the amazingly cheap price, I don't think you can go wrong! Our whole group was satisfied!

C- GPA. Highlights:

- food is decent
- crowded at times
- dirty at times
- service is nonexistent
- can be a little pricey

Quality dropped slightly. Had all you can eat during dinner time. BBQ and sashimi remain good as usual. However, the quality of sushi is not as good as before, though I should not expect too much form an All You can Eat restaurant. I think there are fewer items on the dinner menu now than few months ago. For example, I think it is missing a few more sashimi choice, and prawn tempura. Overall, still the place to go if you like korean and japanese all you can eat at a resonable price.
My Secret Eden
Be Careful. Food: not bad, good for variety, because it also includes DIY Korean BBQ

Value: Good for lunch, dinner is more expensive

Service: Average, sometime below average if they are busy.

BE CAREFUL: the bone of the Chicken Karaage I ate was broken in half, and you really can't tell from the looks of it. Therefore the minute I bite into it, it pierced the roof of my mouth, and I started to bleed. I told them, and all they said was 'Sorry', and that's it.

Consider yourself warned !

DON'T WASTE THE MONEY!!!. Horrible service -waited 15 mins for drink orders to be taken an ice tea and a beer. The beer was delivered 10 mins later - wrong beer & no ice tea. My meal that came out was supposed to have rice, miso soup and tempura diping sauce all of them were missing. My partners meal came 10 mins after mine with my rice, miso soup and sauce these were cold. Meal itself was awful, tempura vegetables were still raw, salmon sashimi still had scales, teriyaki beef tasted like rubber and pepper - no one asked how our meal was or if we would like another drink. One of the worst dining experiences I have ever had!!!
LonnieT
Always good value for all you can eat sushi. Sashimi portions are Niger than most all you can eat's so don't over order.

Acceptable for Expectations. Endless food supply with a dining time limit always raises red flags for me. And given the opportunity, I wouldn't necessarily choose to come to a place like this, but when its in the hands of others, sometimes its what you have to accept to go along with the group. On my first and only visit to Shabusen on a Friday, the place was absolutely packed! I suppose the adage of quantity over quality still pervades in a lot of people's minds.

Rolls were mediocre (and why anyone would order lots of it during an AYCE, is beyond me since its so filling), sushi just plain average (and limited to salmon and tuna), and the meats were okay and probably the best in terms of taste and relative quality.

It your idea of a good meal is to stuff yourself with very ordinary quality sushi and yakiniku, then this place is for you. For me, a second visit is not in the works.
Sinja
Straight Forward. If you want straight forward all-you-can-eat Korean Barbecue and sushi for a large group, this is your place.
Benny
One word: allyoucaneat. Shabusen is a well-known secret. "All you can eat" and "excellent sushi" are not two phrases often paired together- but this place is the exception to the rule. The sushi is fresh and delicious, and there's even Korean BBQ! We have driven and sailed hours out of the way just to stop in for dinner here. There's often a wait on the weekend, so it's worthwhile to call ahead or put your name on the list and then walk around downtown for a bit. If you like lots of good quality raw fish for a bargain, this is the place. Oh- and Shabusen tip #14: don't waste your time on the filler- save all available room for the toro.
Raymond's Sushi Adventures
There were a good number of servers constantly making their way through the tables, and for the most part, I found the service to be adequate even though the restaurant was so busy. The restaurant attracts a large crowd due to its unique Korean Yakiniku BBQ grill-at-your-own-table experience. There are some decent items from the Japanese AYCE menu as well, though the sushi rice can be improved.

This is my second time here, I remember my first time was back in highschool when I used to be part of the school paper and the sponsor teacher took us out for dinner. This time, I am here for lunch. I must say, this place has one of the worse services I've ever recieved at a resturant. Not sure if it was just the person because the other waitress and waiters seemed ok. When it was our time to be seated, instead of bringing us to the table, the waiter that was rude just stood there and pointed. If it was busier, I would understand but there wasn't anyone waiting at the door! He pointed toward the window direction, so we ended up having to look for our seats. After we found our seats, we didn't receive any tea or any service until 10 minutes later and we literally had to wave our hands to get them to come pick up the all you can eat form. Still, it wasn't picked up, we ended up going to the waiter and giving him the form instead. When the food came, it was thrown on our table by the sam

Shabusen is located on Burrard at Alberni. It’s on the second floor, above several stores, including a Coach. But it’s not exactly the most optimal location for an AYCE Korean BBQ joint. Patrons who are dining in this area of town are more likely to head over to the three Glowbal restaurants on Alberni, only a few steps away. Maybe it’d be better targeted for club-goers but it closes at 10:30pm for dinner! I wouldn’t be surprised if they were struggling for business. However, on this particular night, they were completely packed!
Constant Cravings
All in all, I think Shabusen isn’t bad for an AYCE, at least the waiters and waitresses responded to us in a timely fashion, albeit not as polite and courteously as you’d like, but when they’re carrying their weight in rice, soup, and raw meat, I rather they focus on that then batting their eye lashes and saying sweet nothings. Not a bad place to go for large group ga

One of the main reasons we go to Shabusen (for dinner anyway, it’s not available at lunch) is the Korean BBQ. First up we ordered some chicken and beef. Spencer is our official cook, seeing as he likes to play with fire and such. The meat is good, I’m not

We were quite surprised with their service, which was quite pleasant. Other than that, the visit was not too memorable.

I have always liked AYCE places...sushi, K BBQ...with the exception of Posh. I guess I just never understood its concept of boiling meat in flavourless water... I was delighted when some friends were heading to the Shabusen down by my work. I was only inv

For $42.53, the limited lunch menu, and the amount we usually eat, I don't think this was worth it. But we had a good time planning what we would see for the day and chatting over a limitless amount of food.

What can I really say? It's another all-you-can-eat Japanese place except it also features all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ as well. It's convenient and good for large groups, not a bad deal, but I wouldn't pick it. It's not quite for me, but I'm not their targ

It was Arkensen's birthday some weeks ago. So, the birthday boy gets to choose where he wanted to go eat. We already know what he wants. His favourite food, other than fried rice, is sushi. Quality is secondary to quantity. He loves lots of it. Sometimes

Months ago, when I’d booked my flight to Vancouver, I knew that a couple of my close friends in London were also going to be in Vancouver at this time. We’d all grown up in Vancouver and somehow we all ended up in London. And when they heard that I’d be in Vancouver this Christmas-time, they both independently announced that surely we’d be heading to Shabusen for a meal together! Shabusen? I knew the name but had never been. It’s a well-known all-you-can-eat Japanese chain in Vancouver though I’ve recently learned that all but this branch at Burrard have closed. It was at this downtown restaurant that we arranged to meet one lunchtime after Christmas. We checked boxes to order food, we ate the food that arrived, we gossiped – it was a fun lunch!
