Lots of service staff and great food! Great place to take the kids too. So great to have a funky sushi place nearby! The lime mohito Mason jar was awesome. Loved the Japanese Fortress!
Hands down best sushi I've had!Great place.Would highly recommend to anyone!
The general public is similar to the eatery if you know the place. The general public is a sushi bar like no other. They offer a new spin on your traditional sushi rolls so expect quite the flavorful bite with each of your orders. My favorites are the black sesame tuna, the red ninja roll, and salmon run roll. Don't let the fun things on the menu intimidate you though because they also have traditional items too like curry
Funky sushi joint on Main. Lots of cool stuff to see on the walls, but not a place for you if you want an authentic Japanese atmosphere. Huge list of choices (a little overwhelming). Sushi and sashimi were fresh and tasty. A good place for groups with platter options.
The food is great here and so are the drinks. But last time I was there I got a too cool for school server who was bad. She talked to the other servers the whole time instead of helping us. But all the other times I have been the service was great.
Meal: The Ring of Fire platter (yes, we ordered it), Cider on special, and mason jar of coconut-lime mojito. . Service: Almost too good, like checked in way too often. Atmosphere: Loud, inside was a bit warm but decorated with crazy stuff. We sat outside on the patio which was nice, but Main St. is a bit loud.
○good service
○decent food/ they serve Japanese cuisine but from first glance it doesn't look like a Japanese style food
○good selections of drinks/ alcohol
○average price
○very loud/ not suitable for children
○would I go back? Maybe
Quite loud, but a decent DJ kept the music chill enough that it didn't become deafening like some places. Decor is insane and makes no sense, but I suspect that's the point.
My group had the scallops, pork gyoza, takoyaki, tempura chicken donburi, dragon roll, Japanese fortress, and tuna tataki. All was tasty and very reasonably priced. The scallops were cooked perfectly and the sauces were delightful, but I did find the portion size quite small, even for a scallop appetizer. All the other portion sizes were just fine.
We waited quite a while for a drink refill at one point (upwards of 15 minutes) but this was around 8pm on a Saturday night when they were super busy. Still, the service could have been a bit friendlier.
All in all, a great place and I'd happily come back again.
It was actually my first time attending a Zomato event and I had a really great time meeting new people and chilling at this really cool place! It’s a lot like The Eatery. The decor is kind of weird and dark but cool at the same time. It’s definitely a hip place to go to just to chill out and have drinks.
Went to The General Public for a Zomato meetup and I must say, it was a really wonderful experience! It was my first time here and I had such a great time meeting other foodies and chatting over yummy food and drinks. It's very similar to The Eatery that's on the way to UBC and I think it's owned by the same people. Highlights of the night were the sake bomb demos (yaaass) and the wide variety of sushi rolls! They specialize in fusion sushi so their rolls are not the traditional ones that you would find in a regular sushi place. I also really liked the Fat Elvis. It was an avocado tempura topped with tomato and green onions and drizzled with unagi sauce. I thought it was really good, considering I don't even like avocados! Some of the food items were a bit too salty for my taste -- the Sizzling Cow (beef teriyaki), for example, but everything else was pretty good. Their rolls aren't super high quality but it's the sauce that makes it yummy. :P Service was quite slow though but I don't blame them since our group was very large. Otherwise, it's a really hip place with weird and cool decor and it's a great place to go to for drinks. If you like fusion food and trying new and interesting things, this is the place to go! I'll be back again next time with my friends. :)
General Public is amazballs!! We tried loads of different dishes at the Zomato Meet Up and each one was tasty and unique. Loved the MDMA one, can not for the life of me remember what was in it but it was excellent.
The decor is mental! Whoever came up with it must be completely wacky! But I love it!
Great cocktails (excellent mojito) and friendly service - I'll be back and next time I'll be dressed as space trooper!
I love The General Public! I've been here a few times but had the pleasure of attending a foodie meet up there and I was so impressed as usual! The awesome staff started us off but a great sake bomb demonstration which was definitely the highlight for me. We had the option between the Lychee Mojito and the Sakura, both awesome but I found the Sakura to be quite delightful! Even though the food took a while to come out, I found that all the food was definitely worth the wait! All their dishes are so inventive and packed with flavour... The sizzling cow in particular was one of my faves as well the Flaming Toro. You also can't go wrong with their KFC Roll, top notch! Can't wait till my next visit
