Review Lucy's Eastside Diner - Vancouver

The milkshakes were sooooo luxurious and freshly made. You also get to mix two flavors!! The meatloaf was fantastic and the servers were so nice :) Fries are freshly made too! Super crispy and fluffy.

They have a problem with quality control. Tried to bring it up to the manager but they don't care and I never got a call back. Pancakes came FLAT and pretty much looked like a crepe. The first picture is what's advertised and the other 2 photos is what you get.

First impressions beautiful place good music all chairs a real dinner got sit rate away water on the table menu Coffee is good food was tasty I felt it was a little expensive but that how things are now a days I’ll keep it on my list of breakfast choices I will return. I did add things to my breakfast that why it was a little more money than I use to Nice details

Came in famished. Left satiated. I’ll come every time I’m hungry in downtown. Had the Marshall burger…2 patties, cheese, egg, bacon, chilli, mushrooms and the usual fresh accoutrements. Beef was tasty and well seasoned. Fries were typical variety but crispy. Prompt and unobtrusive service. Music at good volume.

Food took a big longer than estimated but that was okay since the guy seemed to be having a bad time with the uncooperative machine. The chicken in the club sandwich was unfortunately pretty dry and had to be eaten with the tomato to help it go down. It was pricey too for the quality (2 stars). The Chicago dog was okay (3 stars) and the fries were good. We really liked the Hazelnut milkshake. Overall 3 stars given the prices.

Usually a decent little spot for greasy eats, a true dive diner. The occasional bug crawling across the wall adds to the allure. All in all, you get what you pay for, nothing more, nothing less. Hits the spot when you desire carbs.
Andrew Bond
Proper Diner with great food and service. Down a star for the washrooms. Wheelchair users can get in but very tight within and can only sit at front. Worth the effort for the food!

Came here to get the milkshake as it was listed one of the best in town. Sorely disappointed. It's basically soft serve ice cream mixed with artificial syrup and they charge $12 for it! It tasted nothing like the flavors i asked for. It had a super strong milk taste and then no idea what the other flavors were. even Mcdonalds milkshakes are better at a fraction of the price. Denny's milkshakes are way better as it has fresh strawberries in it. Furthermore, there are cobwebs on the shelves and they don't even turn on the AC so its super hot in there. Perfect place for hipsters who want to "rough" it and pay premium.

We were there a while ago for breakfast and ordered eggs and toast, for our daughter, off of the kids menu that was on an activity sheet that the waitress gave us when we sat down. When our meals came, the waitress delivered a plate of french toast instead of the eggs and toast that were ordered. When I pointed out what we ordered, she said that the cook had said that we ordered something that isn't on the menu. When I pointed out that it was on the menu that we were given, and asked why we weren't informed of this, I wasn't given acceptable answers. No responsibility was taken by the waitress, or the cook. We haven't returned since, and we will never return again. I don't see how it would seem acceptable to completely change an order without informing the customer.

Okay people if you're waisted drunk and need to eat yes eat the food but if you enjoy food go elsewhere I have had better food in A Canadian forces mess hall how that place got on a dinners list of the best in Vancouver is beyond me.

Great food! We had an awesome breakfast of pulled pork pancakes & a down south breakfast.
Jenny Arsenault
The service is pretty good it's a small little place. The fried chicken sandwich I had was a big greasy but other than that everything was good. But it's all about the company sometimes.
Christine Bruce
Closest place (from the VIA station) I could find for a traditional breakfast, but it was so worth the walk. Very civilizing food and company, and comfortable retro atmosphere.
Bob Ardiel
I've been there 2 days in a row and it the most amazing ! Tasting food I have had in a long time . Very fast service , the staff is very friendly and I'm possibly in love with the waitress Una ;)

Fabulous time for a young man's 12th birthday celebration with his friends! The kids sat at the bar, ordered milkshakes and there was something on the menu to satisfy every picky eater we had in our group. The fried chicken was crunchy on the outside, juicy on the inside and not oily at all! The bacon mac and cheese was amazing. The portions were huge. All the kids want to go back and bring their parents back (from the suburbs!) to sample more dishes. Extra big thanks to our server Craig for taking such good care of everyone. See you again!

This is our new go to place in the Lower Mainland. We go about once or twice every two weeks of so. Small, but the good is terrific and very well priced. The service is friendly and fast, and the atmosphere is comfortable, funky, and welcoming. They have the best shakes in town - better than Sophie's even! - and are open 24 hours, so if you want a solid Oreo milkshake at 2am on a Wednesday morning, you're covered. Could do with a bit more variety in their shake flavours, but that's just me being greedy.

Great experience! Always looking for a 24/7 diner with good service and good food and I finally found it. Would definitely visit again.
Geraldine Dundas
After waiting over 30 minutes for service and almost an hour for my food in which 2 tables that came in after me received theirs, I walked out! Thought I could finally enjoy a taste of this diner and I’m completely disappointed! Service sucks and I’ll be sure to share my experience!

If I could give it 0 stars I would. Despite all of the negative reviews on urbanspoon, we still decided to give it a chance. I ordered a chicken sandwich and was disgusted to find mold on my bread. How did the kitchen not see this? The server didn't really do much other than say a quick sorry and took the sandwich off my bill. Still charged me for the rest of the meal. A dirty and disgusting restaurant. I tried to give it a chance, but I'll never come back. Beware and eat at your own risk.
Kristine Flailer VonToker
Great food, the staff are awesome and make this place a lot of fun. The waitresses made my dining experience that much more enjoyable! This place is a gem <3

Great service n good food. Having entire menu being options is amazing. Winner WinnerChicken Dinner for Breakfast was great!
Cindy Rendall
Cozy quaint place with great food. Missed the shakes this trip.
Bryan Sea
The service directly walking though the door was so bad I was prompted to immediately walk out. I don't care how busy you are, you don't talk to customers like that. Never again.
Jacob Wischoff
Lucy's Eastside Diner is really cool. Zack is probably the friendliest waiter and he likes hockey which made the experience cool. I ordered the Mac'N'Cheese Pulled Pork Hoagie and I can honestly say it didn't let me down. Great food and good people. Keep doing what you are doing!!!
Lynnie Lint
Pretty good fried chicken but a bit too much gravy on the potatoes
Stew Lochrie
Love the staff here..especially Zach. Such a cute monster of cutenessa..heheh. And the Mac and chess eis out of thus world puts some competition against my Grans...and that's saying a lot. I sometimes go just for the Mac and cheese so I can remember her ...yumm

Amazing hole in the wall. Best diner in Vancouver, staff is friendly, and food is delish ;) Much love from Miami ;)
Tia Sutton
Everytime I go, no matter what time I always get such friendly service and amazing food. I love comfort food and this is the place for it! I love Lucy's is open 24hrs because I work nights and when I'm off I'm starving and definitely not in the mood to cook
Thurston Yeo
I dropped in late evening and i expected i missed the day's meatloaf. I was told i can have the last serving of the day. I thought is this a good thing? Of course it was! It was delicious! Great food everytime i've been.
Rosa Rezansoff
Everytime I go I am always impressed with the food and staff. The guy who works the midnight shift Sun-Thurs is awesome. Great milkshakes and Mac n Cheese. My go to is chicken strips with mashed potatoes and gravy.
Jay Rouanzoin
Wicked burgers, cool older place with great staff.
James Brown
I know it's a 50's dinner, but the racism is straight from the 60's. Worst service I've had in a while.
Julie Barlow
Visiting from Australia, we tried the Poutine with onions and mushrooms. Really good and my boozy shake was excellent. Great value, great food and excellent customer service.
Danea Avey
Always love Lucy’s- Great good even greater people
Megan Westbrook
Wow...I have come here since I moved here and the pathetic attempt of a meal was one I will sincerely remember.
Matthew Helset
Staff was friendly and the atmosphere is warm and nostalgic. I had the delicious and filling "grant marshal" burger and one of the best chocolate milkshakes I've ever had :)
Claire van Roggen
Awesome restaurant, love the milkshakes. Will be back 10/10
Ashley Marie
Best comfort food. Ever. You have to try the Crack n Cheese and tomato soup and grilled cheese. Or the cookies. Ermagerd Oatmeal Chocolate Chip. Wish I was back in the lower mainland right now so I could grab some!
Jen
An East Van staple. Open 24 hours and their food is comforting and cheap and delicious. The milkshakes are kind of the best. And the service is ALWAYS killer. Highly recommend. I tell all my friends who are headed to Mount Pleasant to hit this place up for a bite.

This place was featured on John Catucci's You Gotta Eat Here(Food Network) it's located on Main Street and 11th Avenue this little diner is a diamond in the rough a complete gem never call it a dive or a hole in a wall this place has some serious class. I ordered the Lucy's Triple Threat and a black coffee the food was insanely delicious the service was extremely friendly and attentive i would definitely recommend this place. This place is opened 24 hours and is crazy busy bring your appetite and a bit of patience

Over the years the quality of food here has slipped a bit. It does not mean the food is horrible, but just not what it once was. We wouldn't go out of our way anymore for Lucy's, but more of a place to go eat and wind down after a night of drinking. If it does get busy, be prepared to wait and the service can be slow.

The latter is a casual, 24-hour joint located on Main Street, not far from Broadway that serves up a menu of casual diner breakfast, lunch, and dinner items. During my visit, I had their Pulled Pork Pancakes and Mac N Cheese with Bacon. Both of the dishes were tasty, and the prices were extremely affordable. Service was casual but friendly. All in all, after my visit, I can say that I left saying "I Love Lucy". I highly recommend checking this joint out if you are in the mood for some hearty comfort food at bargain prices.

P.S. They also have a pretty epic and tasty-looking eating challenge (Uncle Grant).

Pulled Pork Pancakes ($10):
4/5
This came with three pancakes, a small dollop of pulled pork, a side of hashbrowns, and an egg. The pancakes were a tad flat and chewy, but still tasty, and contained some pulled pork baked in the middle. The pulled pork was quite tender and flavourful, with a nice sweetness that I really enjoyed - I did find it to have a slightly pungent spice that I didn't particularly care for. I really enjoyed the hashbrowns, which were like small diced fries, and were very crispy on the outside while tender on the inside.

Mac N Cheese + Bacon ($9.25 + $3):
4/5
The noodles were well-coated in a rich, creamy sauce, as well as a good amount of cheese. I did find the noodles themselves to be a bit too soft. The dish on its own was also a bit on the bland side and could use more salt/seasoning. However, the addition of the bacon really helped add flavour to the dish.

Came here on a late Thursday afternoon so the place was pretty empty. I ordered the classic burger combo which came with fries and a pint of Vancouver Island's Lucky larger. The burger is just a regular burger but I really liked the fries with aioli sauce and the larger was extremely light and refreshing.
Shana
Do not waste your money here. Food quality was absolutely terrible. We ordered french toast, the fried egg sandwich, and the uncle e's chorizo hash. Hashbrowns were stale and tasted as if they were pre cooked & reheated in a microwave. The chorizo was questionable - resembled leftover dried out mystery meat. The french toast was bland and dry. And the fried egg sandwich was a sloppy mess. I'm definitely one who enjoys unique settings and this place had a great vibe but the food was complete trash! The milkshakes were the only thing worth paying for but you could honestly probably find better ones elsewhere. Also a side note for anyone who is grossed out by bugs the way that I am - this place was filled was flies and I don't appreciate having to wave them away and out of my face as I'm trying to eat. Disgusting!
Karen McCullough
I ordered a plate of fries which were soggy. My husband's apple pie came with soft serve instead of ice cream. Terrible service, even when not busy. I won't be coming back here.
Cai
Quite a laid back diner . I don't think they even care you are sitting around . Extremely filling for the price . The milkshake portions are huge ! You can get a junior one and it will suffice. They don't completely know what a salad is . But the burgers are good .

I remember hearing about Lucy’s East Side Diner on one of those infinitely repeated “Top 10 breakfast” lists from Vancity Buzz and was intrigued by it once I looked it up on Yelp, though never had the opportunity to try it! Was originally planning to hit up Jethro’s on this snowy day, but given how the lineup went out the door, we decided to try this instead!

one of the restaurants that opens 24hours, not much of these or atleast the one that i have in mind, my go to 24hours is still in number 9. Came in to the place while i was in the neighbourhood ordered, a couple items most of them burgers, and pasta type of food, shakes, and well overall i would say the food is slightly below what i have expected to be average in terms of seasoning, some are just a little bit over with the seasoning as well, maybe it's only happens to me, but overall the food was subpar i would say.

Love love love Lucy's Diner. Its open 24/7 which is great for drunken late nights. Their breakfast is where its at. The decor inside is cute.. exactly what you would think when you imagine a quaint diner. They have boozy milkshakes which is always a plus!
Cory Wiebe
First of, 24/7. That's a big plus in my books.
Secondly, all day breakfast.

It's small and cramped, normally fairly busy, but that's just part of smaller vancouver restaurants.

I love the breakfasts. Classic dinner food.
This page is best after a show late at night or very early in the morning.

Walking around Main Street, we stumbled upon Lucy’s Eastside Diner. It is open 24 hours and serves classic diner food like burgers and milkshakes. Looking at the menu posted outside, it seemed like a good place for some fast and filling eats.
Lex
Good food, diner itself was very cramped and slightly dirty. Although still a total retro diner, the milkshakes were old-fashioned and thick. Despite the environment itself, i would totally recommend.
Food Queen
These were the best pulled pork pancakes I have had and for the amount of food you get I thought it was good value. The pancakes were light and fluffy and not too doughy or undercooked. The pulled pork had the perfect balance of sweet and smokiness and wasn’t too overwhelming for eating early in the day.
Pork_ninjas
This 24 hour eastside diner gives me the nostagia feeling of taken back into a 60’s theme diner with hightops, milkshakes and burgers. As most places close early on a Sunday, grabbing a late night bite might be hard but luckily there is places like these that open 24 hours! . Had to get the milkshake, hoagie and the fried chickenStrawberry milkshake $5.25

Lucy’s Diner on a rainy day for some wholesome hearty food. Pulled pork on mac & cheese with poutine, chicken burger with onion rings, strawberry milkshake…. This was delicious, just because we were hungry and not because it was good. Onion rings and poutine were cold, definitely refried and refried again. So hard to chew. I vaguely remember it being a lot better 2 years ago, at 2AM, after a night of clubbing… Well, I had a beer at a company staff appreciation event, but was nowhere close to being drunk.

Lucy’s Eastside Diner on Main Street is where I pop by for breakfast, or when everything is closed late at night, for dessert. Affordable comfort food, big portions, licensed and open 24 hours! It’s pretty hard to find nice places to hang out with friends that are open late in Vancouver (other than pubs/bars, some dessert cafes, and bubble tea shops) and this is one of them! Pictured is the apple pie - with option to make it a la mode. You can’t really go wrong with anything on their menu - expect your diner classics, like breakfast plates, refillable coffee, grilled cheese, mac and cheese, and burgers etc.

So it's entirely possible that I ordered wrong, so I'm giving the dish I had a 0.0, but the environment a 4.0 -- which averages out to 2.0. The Uncle Ev's Chorizo Hash tanked. I have an aversion to left-overs so when I taste something that resembles it, it doesn't sit right with me. The hash felt like pre-cooked potato and chorizo that has been sitting around for a while (it's a 24-hour restaurant so it's possible I guess), re-deepfried, and mixed up with pre-made fried onions which were soggy. I would definitely stay away from this dish. I will give Lucy's another try some other time and go with some of the readers' suggestions next time. The diner vibe is definitely very charming, and the staff is friendly.

This is a great little diner if you want to eat some comfort food in the late hours of the night. I've gone there a couple of times at 1 or 2 am to have a slice of pie and the place is usually filled with people that are starting to wind down from their wild night! Fun little place to eat but don't expect the joint to be quiet.
The Compulsive Eater
Seriously my favorite place to come for after a night of binge drinking, a long shift, a long day etc. So basically any time late at night is a great time for Lucy's. I usually go for their Chicago hot dog because that really hits the spot, with their vanilla milkshake. Yum. The three pigs benny is also good. Pleasant service and open at all hours of the day, can't ask for much more than that.
Chelsea Quinn
Excellent Mac & Cheese, seriously excellent. It's a classic dinner complete with vinyl seats and milkshakes. A little in the $$ side but a really nice feeling spot and good food to match.
Lauren Friesen
Mediocre is a good word to describe Lucy's. The service was okay, but simply placing our order for two milkshakes took about 15 minutes. These were the most satisfying items on the menu, as my buttermilk pancakes were very undercooked. However, has really cool decor and a great diner feel. Will come again, but only for dessert.
DineVancity
I love the interior of the diner, it really brings you back to a different time. Their milkshakes had a very nice consistency, thick but not so much that it's impossible to drink. Their food is a little over seasoned and a bit too salty, but other wise, it was excellent. It's great hour their open 24 hours as well with menus not set for a certain time. So you could have breakfast for dinner or dinner for breakfast!
Carolyn Campbell
Fantastic atmosphere, friendly staff, vintage vibe with 50's decor. No wider than a trailer, the kitchen crew rustle up tantalising plates of goodness while the servers bustle around each other in the front. Front counter or tables. I chose counter service, ordered the 3 piggie bennies with hash browns. The chorizo, locally made, was delicious!
Ok
I wanted something small and simple since I don't eat much so I got a grilled cheese that came with fries. Sure enough, I couldn't finish it but it wasn't because of the portions. B ordered the mac n cheese & meatloaf hoagie that came with fries, and C ordered the ian marshall and got a soup to go with it. Me and B found that the bread was very dry and our too salty and greasy fries were burnt crisps--fried shells that didn't contain potatoes. They were also short, about 1" in length for most, with a few that were about 2" long. C had no complaints. On the positive side, the place had a nice ambiance and the food came quickly.
Michael
Fun diner food in a classic diner setting. Leather booths, bar stool counter seating and a small sidewalk patio. Lots of the usual diner classics, including delicious pancakes and other breakfast options. Really good pouting too, perfect for late night snacks.
Vinita Trieu
Uncle Grant's Challenge- 5x5 oz patties, 5 slices of cheese, 10 slices of bacon between 2 grilled cheese. 4oz pulled pork, XL Mac & Cheese, XL poutine, 26oz milkshake. $30. My first food challenge!
Dez
Missed it the first time driving past, had to circle the block and come back around. Friendly staff, tasty fresh diner fare at a decent price.

I am writing this review as I'm sitting in the restaurant right now. I just ordered a fried chicken sandwich and ate half, when I picked up the second half, I was disgusted to discover there was mold on my bread...... I told the waiter about it, and all he did was say sorry and took it away. Then he said "do you want another one? No right?" I said no, and he just walked off. This is absolutely disgusting. Do not come here.

Thumbs Up. After work, at 2:30am, Lucy's was a good choice. Our server (Craig?) was funny and attentive. It wasn't too busy but there were a few other diners inside. The Eliseo was great. Fresh avocado, chili and grated cheese on a giant hot dog? Yes please! The ginger beer was good; next time, we'll get the soft serve. Clam chowder was a decent side. No surcharge, so a definite plus. My friends like the mac & cheese and meatloaf hoagie. Their fries were very crispy. I snuck a couple of bites and I liked the mildness of the mac & cheese.
Awesome decor. Very retro. 24 hours is a major plus, given my weird hours.
Wish I had discovered this place sooner.
Crissy
The best thing about Lucy’s is that it’s diner/breakfast joint that’s open 24 hours. And it’s not one of those dodgy diners but it’s a cool, hip place in the heart of Mount Pleasant. I went at around midnight and it was a good kind of busy, not too much where I had to wait in line but also not slow enough to make it awkward. I got the smoked salmon eggs benny and it definitely fulfilled my craving. The potatoes weren’t the best, they felt a bit cold and undercooked but the eggs were on point.

When I went back again, I was torn between getting the guacamole grilled cheese and the chorizo hash. I went for the hash because I was in breakfast mode. It was good, but I almost wish I went with my gut and went for the guac grilled cheese. Oh well, just more reason to come back again!
Murielle
It’s so convenient that Lucy’s is open 24 hours a day. If you’re one of those breakfast for dinner type of people, then Lucy’s is the place for you. Between their bottomless hashbrowns and their overall generous portions you really can’t go wrong. They have a really awesome menu that covers all the essential comfort foods. The three little pigs eggs benny is my favourite because it’s such an outrageous amount of food, and their guacamole grilled cheese sandwich is a favourite also. I definitely recommend it!

Terrible food, dirty kitchen. Lucy's used to be my partner and my favourite place to go for breakfast, lunch, dinner or late night eats. Recently there food quality has went from mostly tasty to all frozen. The most recent time and the last time we will ever go into Lucy's, we ordered and then realized the cook was out in the diner talking to a few friends. She was not only talking but having a glass of water and fondling the straw with her hands that had been in her mouth. She then preceded to the kitchen to cook our meal, touching the bread and veggies without washing her hands. This is a regular practice at this restaurant. We cancelled our order and will never return. They lost atleast two customers that came a couple times a week.
Alexitamei
I dont know why this place is not rated higher. For being open 24h and the price, Lucy's is amazing. Nothing gourmet but a solid spot for some satisfying bacon and eggs and greasy deliciousness.
Karisdd
Comfort. Super cute little gem. Yummy food and drink makes my tummy smile.
Foodcrituc
Never Again!. Disgusting, microwaveable tasting food, bad service, only come back if I'm drunk and feel like puking.
Alex
Good Benny's. Solid place any time of day.
Ohwhadupchels
Best French toast on the West Coast. By far the best cinnamon French served with maple syrup. Over my travels across the western coast of the west coast. I dub this restaurant best French toast by far
Amy
I'm sorry I don't usually write reviews for restaurants I'm a carry on kind of gal but in his case I opened an account just to bitch about Lucy's. Sorry Lucy you have it coming. I've given all kinds of benefit of the doubt.
I swear to god the cooks do not know how to treat a potatoe! I've eaten at Lucy's more than a few times in all different times of day (I work/live near it) and not one time ever could I rely on what I was going to get but each and every time get flat out insulted by how bad the food is.
I'm not even going to mention the service cause I've seen some very cool tattoos and hair styles there and that counts for a lot in my book. You can't expect ppl to be that cool AND expect good service it's mutually exclusive.
But the potatoes! So bad. Every time!
Mashed, cubed, it doesn't matter you ain't getting a tasty morsel ever. You also get to pay for the privilege they're that cool.
Dr. Luke Smit
Some of the poorest service I have received in the greater Vancouver area. Overpriced, vey little seating, had to wait over a half hour for eggs at midnight. Overall, bad.
Amanda
I've been sitting here waiting to pay after not receiving half my order for half an hour. Don't waste your time.
AP
Kind of brutal. Went in shortly after noon. Waitress decides this would be a great time to have HER lunch. After 15 minutes, I ask to order. A couple walks in, orders food, eats, and leaves before we even get our food. We finally get to eat, after being there for roughly 50 minutes. My friend finds what appears to be a bite mark taken out of the bread of his sandwhich (could've been anything though). In any case, he couldn't finish his meal as he had to get back to work.

The staff looked grossly unprepared for the traffic, which should be expected at lunch time. And the food was mediocre.

Oh, and the waitress left at 1pm.
Erinphant
HORRIBLE. The food was terrible. The soda was flat, the soup was cold and the service was lacking. It's supposed be comfort food but in truth it is truth uninspiring. Please do not waste your money here.
Carolyn.lair
Yummy & Fun. Pulled Pork, Mac & Cheese, onion rings, milk shakes, Strongbow, East Side Dark Sliders, what more do you crave 24 hours.
Smart friendly staff, wonderful characters show up all through the night!
LULU
No good. Food was medicore, my burger was cold. For the amount of money they are charging for food, it should be way better. I asked for syrup for pancakes, never got it, had to eat my pancakes without syrup. The check came, I didnt even look at the check right when the waiter brought it, and he already asked if i needed change. How do i know if i haven't looked at the bill?He basically was rushing me out of the place. Has a cool look, but I wouldnt eat there again.
Bob
Food was hilariously bad, waiter completely incapable. Happy to avoid this hipster hellhole.

A bit nicer than a dive diner. Lucy's is in the heart of hipsterland on Main Street's coffee shop sector, and it's got the retro-cred decor that's de rigeur with the the piercing/tattoo/bowling shirt crew. But I don't think Lucy's is fitted out like that for ironic reasons. They just haven't changed anything since that part of Vancouver was serving breakfast to hung-over dock-hands in dungarees, not college-educated theatrical types in clothes they dug out of their dead grandpa's attic.

Lucy's has some modern touches on the plate, like the chorizo and Hollandaise on my "Three Little Piggies" triple-Bennie. I bet guys would have sneered at that as being too fancy in whatever era Lucy's was new. Back in the day, old-timers might have liked the peanut butter milkshake I had,(not a bad deal for $5) but they wouldn't have been able to wrap their heads around the idea of putting Wild Turkey bourbon in it. Unfortunately, neither could I, because I was brekking with some mates from work, and it was still before 0900. Even a 24-hour joint like Lucy's has to pay attention to the timing of liquor laws.

I noticed one review slagged the hash browns. I had doubts about eating them, but they were fine -- individualized cubes of white potato that tasted as though they had been deep-fat fried. Not your typical hash browns, but deep-fried potatoes would get applause in old times as well as new.

This place is a gem. Quick service, delicious food. The waitresses and waiters are nice and funny. They have the best Mac'n'Cheese in town. Great for breakfast and late at night. We always ask to have our meals made as a surprise, whatever chef thinks is good - we've never been disappointed.
Jesse
This place has the worst service ever! The waitress didn't even take notice when we walk in and didn't take us to a table. When we finally seated ourselves the waitress took quite some time to bring us some water. When the water arrived it was dirty mine had coffee grind in it (or so I thought) and some white stuff from then on I know I will not stay for the food plus the waitress didn't even come take our order.

Visiting from UK. On holiday in Vancouver. We were going to the Vancouver Canadian's baseball game on 31.7 and wanted somewhere quick to eat en-route. It's a diner and we wanted an authentic diner experience and we couldn't fault it. Sat outside and watched the world go by as we ate. Service was very friendly and food came quickly and was as we requested (We are a family of 5 and kids are a bit fussy i.e. didn't want chipotle or mayo or tomato on their burgers!) I asked for a recommendation and waitress recommended the meatloaf sammie which was great. Boys loved their milkshakes and I would definitely recommend the peanut butter one as other reviewers have done, but the Oreo was good too! I would recommend it, if we were in the area we would definitely go again.

Better than Denny's. I live near Lucy's and like it. It's a fun place, and can be packed at 3PM or 3AM.

The Angry Birds dinner is pretty good, as is the Mac 'n' Cheese w Bacon. And the Caesars are pretty good too. It's surprisingly cheap compared to the other places on Main.

Service can take a while, but the girls working there are funny and friendly.

The hashbrowns suck and they should definitely change them.
Chouie
Don't expect this place to be a 3 star Michelin restaurant but this place is 24 hours. This place does get busy sometimes so you might have to wait a while for some seating/food sometimes. Great alternative to Denny's when you're done partying and you're hungry.

Food is mediocre at best, but serious is (usually) okay. Lucy's is a go-to hang out spot for my friends and I, but I think it's just for their milkshakes, and 24/hr convenience. If you're looking for good food, I'd skip Lucy's, but if you want greasy-spoon hangover relief or milkshakes at 4am, Lucy's would be the place to go, with all it's 50s-style decor ("linoleum" floors and all).

The service tonight was below par. The waitress was terrible, unaware and inconsiderate - I tipped her because I felt guilty. Avoid the night shift if you want to be noticed...

Big Dreams, horrid reality. I've tried so many times to love this place, I see the sign "voted best diner" outside and get occasional things in my letterbox saying "local favourite". I went over a year ago and it wasn't too bad, but it's gotten to the stage that the food actually looks as bad as it tastes. The staff are tired, and over the life of serving. On car free day it was empty, which does not bode well.

I feel like i have to note I'm not fussy, i'll sit and read a book patiently. I'll eat food that is ok, because it's cheap and i don't have to make it. I don't need servers to be attentive and all over me, but this is past that level of casualness.

Get a fresh cook, some more staff with experience or passion to inject some life in the place and bring back what looks and feels so promising as a local diner!

.
Nikki
Absolutely horrible!!!! Service...there wasn't any, I went with my brother and we were treated like we were inconveniencing the waitress. The food is disgusting and tasted really old/stale, my avocado in my sandwich was brown. The best part of the entire meal was when the chicken in my belters sandwich was RAW! Yes folks, pink! I will not ever step foot in this place again and don't recommend it to anyone!
Cris
Actually; the worst service. Did not take my orders correctly. Smug, and cheeky to my response they were incorrect. I will never go there again, and I will recommend that to my friends nd you.

To My Tattooed Friend. Thanks for the delicious Chorizo Hash and Milkshake! Lucy's is a great place for late night breakfast and snacks
Anna
Go for the atmosphere. This is an excellent place to meet random people during a late night. The atmosphere is awesome and the retro look is great.

The food however is pretty standard and lack lustre. The poutine was mediocre but the shakes were tasty, especially the booze shakes.

I would return for the people.
Doug
Such a disappointment. The waiting staff needs a serious crash course. Dropping the plate off and walking away is par for the course. How could they know that i might like vinnegar with my fries. Five times there, and five times i had to walk up to the counter and ask for it while my short bearded waiter was either eating or chatting to staff. For shame.

What happened?!. I have been going to Lucys since it opened. I used to love this place, it was a great breakfast spot. Nowadays when you go into Lucys Eastside Diner here is what you will encounter. Staff that seem to be drunk out of their mind, that couldnt care less about customer service. Food that looks and tastes like it came out of the freezer, then microwaved. Hipsters. And their cook (tall black guy) will hit on you with lines like, "baby, you eyes are so sexy". My friends and I realized that he had hit on all of us individually and none of them will go back to Lucys. AND IT IS DIRTY! It often smells like garbage inside the restaurant, the washrooms are gross and, you cant touch anything in the place without getting something sticky or greasy on your hand. I GIVE UP ON LUCY'S EASTSIDE DINNER...
She Loves To Eat
I take back any praise. The food is beyond bland and although cheap it is overpriced for the quality you receive.

I had the Burger/Milkshake combo, upgraded with bacon and cheese ($3.50). It was the worst. The cheese was rubbery, the condiments were non existent and BLASPHEMY- the bacon was overcooked.

The bacon was so overcook it actually cut my mouth - I hate when restaurants cook the S*&# out of bacon, leaving it hard to chew and tasteless. The meat was not seasoned either. The "Fry Sauce" is so bland you need to eat a whole mouth full to get any flavour, which you won't want to do anyway. Very disappointing, very disgusting.

Friggin' Awesome. We were all perplexed. We needed dinner, and one of us said "I wish there were more Diners with just plain ol' Diner food and Diner people". Our friend mentions this place so we go and give it a shot.

I had the pulled pork sandwich. It was really delicious. Pretty cheap too at about 8 bucks with fries. The service was incredibly friendly and attentive. I see there are some varied reviews on this site about the service but we sure didn't have any trouble.

So value/service was rad. Would def go again. Is it a bit of a hipster joint? Well sure, maybe, but I think it's more of an all-types sort of place, like a diner should be. Our server was really punk rock and the other clientele varied from older people to youths. The only thing missing...was Tom Waits at the piano I tells ya.

Looking for a great breakfast??? Dont stop here!!!. This is my first review as I am normally easy to please, and can normally find something good out of a situation. Not the case here!! We had heard of Lucy's and thought we would stop for breakfast.... wish we hadn't!! It was by far the worse breakfast I have ever had. We ordered the pancake stack, and the chorizo hash. Seriously, frozen pancakes from a box would have been way better. They were over cooked, flat, watered down and flavorless. The fruit compote consisted of a few frozen blueberries - yes they were cold! The hash left a lot to be desired, Cold chorizo, tasteless potatoes and severely runny eggs... I havent even spoken about the burnt tasting coffee!! I got one word for you ... YUK!!! If you are thinking of going to Lucy's... DONT!!! wish we hadnt!!

Goodbye Lucy's. I've been to Lucy's three times. Loved it the first time, liked it the second, and hated it the third. I am not sure what happened, but the food went from being cheap and good, to not worth it and horrible. The food is very mediocre and nothing special. The milkshake was overpriced and tasted very cheap. You can basically make everything on their menu at home and it will taste better. We sat outside and a homeless guy would not leave us alone. The waiter came out several times and did not even utter a peep to the homeless guy. Tsktsk. Unfortunately, this is the end for me and Lucy. Goodbye Lucy. Forever.

Milkshakes were great, onion rings are amazing, server was great 7/10

CRAPPY HIPSTER JOINT. We have gone to this place on numerous occasions as a quick pickup dinner (and cheap - ordering the $11 burger combo).
Tonight after calling in our orders and asking for the combos my husband picked it up and the total was $38!! Seriously, $19 for a crappy burger combo? Yes, we added bacon, cheese and subbed onion rings. So at least you would think it would be amazing! I wished we went to Triple O's instead! At least it would be better than the stale onion rings and soggy bacon and undercooked burger.
Perhaps my husband would have felt more comfortable discussing the cost with the waitress if she hadn't been sitting around chatting to her swarm of hipster friends visiting her at work. I'll save my $ and go to Romer's on 4th instead next time!!

Horrible food. Horrendous Service.. Mom and I attempted to hit up all of our favourite spots on Main Street at the beginning of a holiday weekend. Unfortunately, all of them were packed and had wait lines. Starving we drove past Lucy's. It was dead. I have avoided Lucy's since it's launch as many of my friends told me to stay far, far away. Everyone said that Lucy's provides bad service and bad food. I usually like to give everything a go once and I like to think I have an open mind besides we were so hungry. We decided to give it a go. Ugh, I should have driven out to 4th.

Service:

THE WORST SERVICE I HAVE EVER HAD. We walked in and asked if we should seat ourselves. I got a half assed "Yeah..." We sat down and ordered. Mom chose lunch, I chose breakfast. The servers were at the till bitching about the last server who just left. I tried to shut them out but, unprofessional people stand out. The service was so bad that one girl walked by the table saying "People, I've got to get away so, give me some money." Not sure if she wanted us to hear that or maybe she was wanting to get off her shift? It is the August long weekend (It's Friday today.) The service was so bad that as my Mom took her last bite of food and was still chewing the lanky unsettling dirty blonde removed her plate. She then said "I'll get you your bill." It was shocking.

The servers are the most unprofessional servers that I have ever encountered. All of them unsettling. I work in the service industry and I was appalled that the owner of this diner allows this kind of behaviour! I won't even go into more of the annoyances because frankly, you or I do not have enough time. I would normally tip between 25% - 30 % but, this time they barely got 10%. I have never tipped so low.

Grub:

The worst breakfast I have ever had. I had the Smoked Salmon Benny. The English muffin wasn't toasted and barely warm. The Benny sauce was lumpy. The hashbrowns were the worst I have ever tasted. They weren't even cooked through. I just couldn't eat it and decided not to even ask for anything else as I wanted to get the hell out of Dodge as fast as I could. As I write this I can feel the potatoes sitting in my stomach. Mom had the Lucy Burger. Dry and boring. Fries dry. All was bad. This is not diner food!

For a place that sells themselves as a Mom and Pop joint with homemade grub this was by far THE WORST EVER.

I will never go back and I will tell everyone I know to stay far, far away. Spend your hard earned money elsewhere.

Kick butt!. You don't go to Lucy's for good food... It's great atmosphere and even better hours. When you're feeling for something to satisfy that late night hunger, Lucy's is best bro!! Their peanut butter milkshake is DYNAmite!!
Food Lover
Loves it:). People that give bad reviews to Lucy's Eastside Diners are people that don't eat a lot and don't know what good food are?? Since Lucy's Eastside Diners open last July, I have been a regular and all my friends that I told about this diner that open 24 hours are also become regulars.
Where can you have a burger with milk shake or beer??
Joe
Took my ketchup!. I had lucy's classic burger platter /triple.
i thought it was a platter that i can taste various burgers (smaller size) but then it turned out to be a burger with three patties. the guy was very nice enough to offer alternative dish if i wanted to change it to something else or a drink. i said it is ok and had the gigantic burger.

my bf came after all so he helped me finishing it but the food wasn't great.
the fries were not crisp, and it was oily and limp... pretty nasty bad. the burger patties were dry and not juicy at all.

but the worst of all, the lady server took my ketchup when she saw that i was using it. i thought she was going to fill it up for meor something (altho it was already pretty full) so i didnt say anything but the ketchup never came back :(
Supermuncher
24-hour Awesomeness. How can you not love it? Open 24 hours. Their burger combo is hella reasonably priced - ten bucks for a burger, fries, and milkshake or beer - and the best post-night-out food ever. Also tried the mac 'n' cheese, very creamy & cheese, very satisfying.

Cute diner atmosphere, basic fare. My friend and I went to Lucy's for the first time the other morning for breakfast. I was immediately taken by the clean and kitschy 50s diner atmosphere, sat at the 'bar', and had a decent coffee and breakfast for $10 (including tax + tip).

They were accommodating in 'vegetarianising' my friend's and my breakfast, substituting fresh veggies for sausage without complaint or extra charge (which a lot of places don't do, oddly enough).

The server was friendly and chatty, and I'm looking forward to going back to give myself a heart attack when I order their double-decker grilled cheese and a peanut butter shake sometime -- which could be anytime, since they're open 24/7.
Okvancouver
Combo success. Service was great and food arrived quickly. My fries were delicious (not soggy like others have experienced), my burger was perfectly cooked, and my oreo milkshake tasted just the way an oreo milkshake should. For 10 bucks, I enjoyed this fairly priced meal waaay more than similar meals at Denny's.

Did you pay $100 for your dinner? then by all means please whine. I think people just like saying the word 'hipster', it makes them feel superior to some idea they have about something...

as for Lucy's, i've been once and will go again- moved here recently from the east and happen to be across the street.

how could anybody complain about a decent burger and fries and a large milkshake for $10? you even get the milk shake container like in olde tymes, basically giving you two full glasses.

the fries were underdone a bit, but that might just be my preference- next time i'll just ask for them well done, no big deal. same for the mayo on my burger- is that a western thing?

When you consider they have to staff the place 24/7 yet prices are pretty low (if you think they're not low, you're a cheap effin prick) then I give Lucy's credit for a good meal. I was satisfied and tipped my server accordingly.

Looking forward to another visit, maybe for breakfast.

Yikes. We went in for a burger and fries. This place puts the "grease" in greasy spoon. Our server was awesomely friendly and helpful - our food arrived fast and was sooo not good.

The menus offered more than just a price and picture of the food - they also offered samples (leftover from past visitors). There was food on the walls and the floor was (shudder) even more covered with food.

Not going back - don't recommend.

I had the burger with fries and milkshake combo and was satisfied. The burger was quite good and had fresh vegetables with a good bun. I really liked the fries as they were hot and fresh out of the fryer. However, the milkshake was very disappointing. It was very watered down with too much milk. White Spot has way better milkshakes but overall a pretty decent meal.

Sorry. Not worth the wait. Sorry hipsters. The most original thing on the menu is pamdesal sliders. As a filipino I have to say NOT WORTH THE WAIT! Also, hipsters generally provide the worst service. Hey, spend less time TRYING to act cool and just BE cool!

They've worked out all the kinks. When they first opened, I'd have to agree with the comments about the hashbrowns being awful, and some service issues. But they seem to have responded to some of the feedback. Hashbrowns are awesome now. Fact is, even though at the time of writing this review only 58% like it, It's packed!!! which goes to show how great the concept is. In terms of real food review and quality, for $4.50 I can get a full plate of food an amazing egg sandwich and fries. The 10 burger shake combo is amazing. (my partner and I share this).

Fun place. Pretty good for the price. Popped in last night to check out this new diner. Cool little place (very little). Nice retro diner vibe and the menu looks pretty good. Basically, what you'd expect and they are licensed too!

Went for the $10 burger and beer special. The burger was pretty decent. Was it the best burger ever? No, but it was pretty decent for the price. I got it with cheese and mushrooms, which upped the cost. Mushrooms were fresh and plentiful. The bun was okay. A little dense, but not bad. The bun is so vital and I think they should consider doing better.

Fries were the shoestring variety, but fresh cut. They were really good, except that they were heavily over salted. Don't know if the chef just goofed or this is policy, but they should work on it. Play it safe and ask for no salt. You can always add it.

Ice cream machine was broken on this visit and so no milkshakes. One of our burgers arrived with two bun bottoms, which was kind of funny.

Saw someone eating the meatloaf which came with a side of diced frozen veg, for that true retro feel, but it's not something I would want to eat.

So with the salt, the buns, no ice cream, the place still feels a little rusty, but it has a lot of potential. Service was charming and friendly. It's a fun place and I want to try breakfast there.

A-W-E-S-O-M-E!. Ok, I guess I thought Lucy's is awesome because I went in with an open mind and an excitement about being 24 hrs. I went in in the middle of the night with my 12 year old daughter after a long day on set of a project she was working on. We were hungry and tired. We were seated right away and the first thing I noticed was the energy and the number of people there for that time of the night. We got our second wind and ordered a chocolate milkshake, poutine and the meatloaf dinner. Um...can we say YUM?! My 12 year old said the poutine was better than NY Fries, and my meatloaf provided all the comfort that I had hoped for at 1 AM. The service was top notch, the price was just right, the food was great considering I would've spent more $ had I driven through McD's. We loved how it felt like we were sitting at home eating a midnight snack at our kitchen counter. ATTENTION TO THE OWNERS OF LUCY'S...Please please don't change the feel of this place. We don't always want balsamic drizzle on everything!! Keep it the way it's meant to be, good food in a casual setting at great prices. My 12 year old says this is our new favorite hang out. Kudos we love this place!

Potato abuse. Completely agree about the awful hash browns. The look of disgust on my face when my plate arrived was hilarious to my friend.
I miss Slickity's Jims sooooo much right now. Proof that I will slog through the hipsters for good food.
Poached eggs were nice, but everything else was prepackaged or totally subpar. Coffee was brown water (but refilled twice). Service was fine, but the food will keep me from returning.

Disappointment. Since I live in the area, I had been looking forward to Lucy's opening up for a long time. Once I heard it was owned by the same people that run the Whip, I was even more excited.

I went for a breakfast / lunch with 2 friends at around 1 PM on a weekday. It was pretty busy, but they seemed to be managing well with 2 servers. All the seating in this place is incredibly tight (we had to move our table over so the person next to us could leave), but hey, it's a diner.

The menu looked good, albeit a little bit pricey. Our orders were taken promptly, and drinks were delivered within a few minutes. I ordered an omelette, one friend had a burger & fries, and the other had a benny. The restaurant really seemed to clear out after the lunch rush around 1:15 or so.

For some reason, it took us over 45 minutes to get our food from the time we sat down. After our orders were in, we were 3 of about 10 people in the restaurant. The server came back and checked up on us regularly, refilling coffees and waters and apologizing for the delay.

Our food eventually got to us, and it was disappointing. The omelette was fine, served with toast and absolutely disgusting "hashbrowns". if you served them to me on a plate by themselves, and didn't tell me what they were, I would have had no idea they came from a potato. Deep fried, super crispy, flavourless, with almost an angel hair pasta-like shape. And I LOVE hashbrowns...all types.

My friend with the burger described it as "bleh" and the fries as "tasting old". The verdict on the Benny was "pretty good", and everyone shared my sentiments on the hashbrowns.

All in all, for an omelette, coffee, and a juice, after tax and tip, it was $15. Incredibly disappointing. For my money, you're way better off walking down the street to Nice Cafe. Way better food at half the price.

I'll try them again in a few months to see if they've turned their act around, because I really want this place to be delicious.

Equal to Denny's at Best!. I heard a lot of hype about the new hot spot in Hipsterville to eat.

Well I can tell you not what not to do if you plan on eating there.......don't sit where you can see the kitchen and the dirty clothed sweatpant wearing long haired cooks (sans hairnets) preparing your meal! Mmmmmmmmm Yummy!

I had a burger and fries which came with a milkshake. I had a side order of coffee that was never topped up. I was not even done my fries when my plate was gone and exchanged for a bill. I quess my meter had expired on my chair.

As for value for dollar............the burger was comparable to what Dennys or a dirty truck stop would serve! no more, no less!

I think the Hipsters will keep the place alive but not anyone Normal !

Lucy’s is a place I sometimes end up at when it’s late and I’m craving comfort food or desserts because this place is open 24-hours. They have breakfast all day, so that’s a plus. Another thing I love is soft serve ice cream, which they have here. (I clearly love lots of foods). You can ask for a topping with the soft serve ice cream, such as oreo or chocolate sauce that they use for their milkshake. They make ice cream sandwiches, which is their regular cookies with soft serve in between. Don’t make the same mistake of getting cookies, soft serve and an ice cream sandwich because you’ll end up having one regular ice cream sandwich and a deconstructed one, unless that’s what you’re into. They also have homemade pie, but it often runs out by the end of the night.

...sauce just a slightly bit too salty, but hash browns delish and bennies otherwise perfect...

24 hour goodness. Working late nights may mean grabbing dinner at 1:30am, though at this time of dawn your options are severely limited. Majority of establishments still open involve fried foods under heat lamps at connivence stores , and greasy Chinese meals in small and dingy hole in the walls. After googling 24 hour places in my proximity, I was sold on “Lucy’s”, as it was the only one that did not involve noodles in soup. This is what you imagine when you think retro diner, it was like we walked back into the 70′s. Walls painted in a faded teal or pink. Black and white checkered floors tiles. Table tops and bar surfaces in vinyl with ribbed metal edges. Each seat was equipped with a napkin dispenser and a glass bottle of Heinz ketchup, which with its peeling label had clearly seen multiple refills. There was no music, the background was the buzzing of well lit bulbs and the humming of machinery kept behind the swinging kitchen doors. The most memorable decor piece was their collect

Lucy's has that old school diner feel to it, from the service right down to the swinging kitchen doors. Kind of unassuming from the street, it’s got a lot of character inside...

...it was my first time here, so I didn't know they open 24 hrs a day, which is amazing! I mean, how many places in Vancouver do you know that's opened past 12? It's rare! Anyways here is the menu.. ( I was shocked to see that

Lucy’s is affordable, the decor gives off an awesome old school vibe, but the mediocre food leaves something to be desired. However, if you’re starving and looking for cheap food that’s good on your wallet – this is a great place to fulfill your late night cravings.

So this visit to Lucy’s was a hit-and-miss. I liked some aspects, and disliked others, but overall it was an ok experience. Perhaps if I find the time to go back (maybe during school, since it’s close to the 99 route) I’ll try a different drink and another omelette, or their other offerings of burgers, hot dogs and other diner-y entrees. It certainly helps that Lucy’s in open 24 hours, so if I’m in need of a place that is both meal- and allnighter- material, I have one more place to go.

Day 2 began with craving for proteins and Lucy's Eastside Diner was the lucky first stop of the day. Lucy impressed all - while I enjoyed my Down South Breaky, others described the hashbrowns as the best ever and the hollandaise sauce as tasting like real hollandaise. When the itinerary begins on Main Street, it is difficult to leave Main Street. Strolling and shopping brought us back to Shaktea . While only an hour after our breakfast, the smell of freshly baked scones were simply hard to resist. Three of us, three scones made it a mini snack, thoroughly enjoyed with Devonshire cream and Shaktea's French Earl Grey fruit preserve. Once we made sure we sustained the many retailers of Main Street, guests were back in le jardin for a glass of Rosé and some snacks. And what's a better treat than incorporating some jardin crop in the dinner menu. Way too many tomatoes that are still green like grass. Why no

If you’re looking for that roadside diner feel this might be the place for you, but by no means is this the complete package.

The place is cute and definitely a fun experience day or night, however it’s very hit or miss.
Poor Starving Students
Overall, the food was just average – I wouldn’t even consider it an authentic diner. Though the inside is nice and retro-like it also lacks that homey diner feel. Oh well, I guess I have to go to the states for that!
