So excited to find a whole Anago Don here. I have always been an Unagi fan.
This is the first time coming to this restaurant.
We ordered the Anago Don, Uni Don, the Yakitori, the Engawa Sashimi and the snapper Sashimi.
Their ingredients were pretty fresh. Sashimi were on the pricier side, but very good quality. The only thing I don’t like is that all the dishes, including the Anago and the sushi rice a bit too sweet to my taste.
Best Japanese restaurant in Vancouver. Everything is very fresh and price is reasonable. Staffs are very nice. I would rate them 10out of 10.
Came here for dinner one night with my boyfriend. Very good sushi for reasonable prices. You definitely get your money's worth. Only thing was that service was a bit slow and you'd have to flag down the server if you wanted to order. Regardless, I would definitely still come back if I get the chance!
Great little place with high quality food! I had the salmon sashimi and Tuna aburi- I'd recommend both dishes! They have gluten free options for those who are celiac. The service was lovely too!
Great food and excellent service! I love classic Japanese operated sushi restaurants... and this is one of them... it is hidden in the this little commercial strip in the residential area but it is a must go especially if you are a sushi lover! Fresh fishes prepared perfectly with a sushi rice that is flavourful but not overpowering. Both the fish and rice break apart in your mouth creating a balanced taste. Come and try for yourself... love how they give you a pack of pocky sticks to take home!
Hitoe sushi was a restaurant that Grayson introduced to me and it has been a favorite of ours ever since. It’s Japanese owned so if you are more interested in fusion style rolls and eats, this probably isn’t the place for you but the two of us love authentic Japanese food so we keep coming back.
I'm a big, big sushi fan and this is some of the best I've found in Vancouver, worth traveling across the city for. The place is small and nothing fancy, but the servers are soooo personable and the food is soooo good.
The best sushi in the west end , in my opinion. I've been coming here for the past 3 years and they've been consistent every single time I come here. Quality is amazing and you don't have to spend a fortune to eat here. Their unagi is perfection and I love their salmon and tuna belly as well, always fresh and all...
Hitoe is a small homey sushi joint in Kerrisdale. Upon entering you could see many Japanese cultural elements hanging on the ceiling and placed around the counter, giving it some character to a restaurant that looks like what was once a small cafe. The menu had a great selection of your usual sushi nigiri and rolls but I had my heart set on the uni unagi ikura don. It seems like it's one of the more popular items on the menu because at the time of my order(7:30pm), they were sold out of uni! To compensate, the server told me I could substitute anything I want for the uni, so I opted for more unagi of course. My boyfriend ordered Sushi Combo C which consisted of tuna toro, salmon toro, hamachi, unagi, tamago, sockeye, tuna roll and salmon roll. We also ordered saba nigiri and the negi toro toro. For the nigiri, we find that although they tasted carefully prepared and marinated, some flavours seem to be hit and miss, a few even tasted bland (e.g. tamago, saba). The negi toro toro nigiri was a bit of a disappointment, because being an aburi sushi, it was torched a little too long to a point that the cooked part was getting to be too thick. However, boyfriend did enjoy the plain toro nigiri much better. Personally I loved my donburi, even though the uni was missing. The unagi was not over sauced and was slant cut parallel to the bones while maintaining a firm texture; the ikura were like opaque orange pearls shining in my bowl inviting me to dig in, each bite into them exploded with freshness and sweetness that made the rest of meal more appetizing. The best part of the entire experience was the sushi rice-- although softer than traditional style sushi rice, it was extra sweet and mixed well, making simple hosomaki taste more flavourful than it actually was (although it could be slightly less sweet, but still enjoyable!). The servers were attentive and helpful throughout our meal, when we asked for a dorayaki to go they even wrote dorayaki and drew a happy face on the to-go box! How sweet. We will definitely come back to experiment the other items on their menu.
Hitoe is a great stop for organic sushi. The rolls were wrapped very well. It's a bit on the pricier side, but well worth it. Since this is west 4th finding parking is a bit tricky.
Love the salmon belly sashimi - fatty and fresh. It was also the fact that not many Japanese restaurants offer this. We then tried the toro nigiri and they were buttery and fresh. A wanted to try the Futo maki so we ordered the non-veg version but we were only able to taste all veggie so I wasn't sure what the difference is. The other impressive dish was the uni ikura unagi don. At $16, I think the portion was generous and it made me want to order another one! I was never a big fan of salmon roe but they are not fishy at all. The quality is comparable to Ajisai in Kerrisdale (maybe slightly lower) but the price point is definitely lower (20%?) so I would recommend it to anyone who wants quality sushi but doesn't want to break the bank.
Another gathering of our sushi club. On tonight’s menu, some fusion Japanese cuisine. Our destination didn’t look like much on the outside. A red brick veneer and an interesting way to spell out “sushi”. Inside, the restaurant was much more ornate. The pale green walls were littered with flyers and knick knacks. All the hand written menu items were fraying at the ends. It looked like a messy desk with scraps of paper in all different sizes, cut into all different shapes. The one advertising takoyaki was shaped like a round ball, to better visually display the menu item. The drink menu was in green, and did not include any alcoholic beverages or sake. The daily special list was tape and paper on a poster board decorated with origami paper cranes. Japanese paper fans lined the walls, a white faced and black eyed mask hung in display, traditional kites flowed down from the rafters, and a string of lanterns hung above the foyer.
Super fresh sushi. Smaller portions so order more than you would normally. Average pricing. Doesn't serve alcohol (much to my friend's disappointment). If I lived closer, I would be a frequent customer.
I don't know... I just like it so much better than nigiri. I'm never satisfied with the rice content in nigiri. I love mah rice!!! So I always have to have a big ol' bowl of sushi rice in order to be satisfied ;). I love sushi rice so much that I always consider asking for an extra bowl whenever I go to a Japanese restaurant haha. I just love the vinegary flavour and the chewiness!! Would it be appropriate to eat a tonkatsu with sushi rice? ;)
When my friends ask me what food I want to eat I answer "as usual." It basically means I want sushi with lots of salmon sashimi. We wanted to try new sushi restaurants in Vancouver so I suggested Hitoe Sushi as it has a 91% rating on Urbanspoon. Unexpectedly it happens to be a fairly small restaurant that does not even serve alcohol. We were disappointed because sashimi pairing with sake has been our typical Friday sushi night.
We ordered 2 orders of SALMON SASHIMI ($7.95 for 5 pieces). It tasted really fresh with nice firm texture. 3 pieces for myself wasn't enough so we ordered 2 more orders.
What I really didn't like about this restaurant was their s-l-o-w service. So slow that we all lost our appetite pretty much. In order to get our SUSHI COMBO B ($20.95), we waited for 35 minutes. It was pretty bad especially when the tables were not even full. But luckily, sushi tasted amazingly good and fresh. It had 9 different nigiri sushi including tuna, sockeye salmon, ebi, tamago, unagi, farmed salmon, tobiko, uni, ikura. Two rolls included in this combo were salmon and tuna rolls. My friends were surprised about the fact that simple salmon and tuna rolls could be really good.
I need to mention about our server at this point because just before getting our next dish we noticed they had takoyaki available on that night although our server informed us they did not have it anymore as they changed the menu. She even checked her own little menu after. We were so confused when she said it because we saw their special takoyaki menu on the wall. Not only that, she put our order at the wrong table so that our food went to another table right next to us. Gladly she got off work during our meal so another waitress took care of our table from then on. Anyways, after another 10 min or so, we got our EEEEEEELLL ROLL ($11.95). Here is a story how we got this roll: when we asked for any recommendations, our server answered "our special rolls are special." Yup, that's how we ended up choosing one of their special rolls, EEEEEEELLL ROLL. It was a bit disappointing as there wasn't much of unagi unlike the name suggests. There was more avocado than anything else. The roll came with some seaweed salad in the middle and the roll itself consisted of imitation crab, prawn tempura, cucumbers, wrapped with avocado, unagi, and topped with masago, teri sauce and mayo. We all agreed it tasted more like a Dynamite Roll as unagi didn't give a strong flavour.
We waited for another 10 to 15 mins to get this salmon sashimi again. At this point, I wanted to cancel it and just wanted to pay the bill. Every food came too slow breaking the flow of our dinner. Moreover, the second order of salmon sashimi was pretty bad. The sashimi was cut into inconsistent sizes and the texture was really mushy, tasting not fresh either. From this point, I didn't like here anymore.
Our last dish, their today's special menu, GRILLED HAMACHI KAMA was very special only because it took more than an hour to come to our table. Seriously, they need more staffs in the kitchen or maybe more stoves. Tasted alright but definitely not worth our time.
I will give them extra one point for giving us Pocky. Overall, everything was so slow ruining the flow and appetite. Inconsistent sashimi quality, poorly-trained server who doesn't even know whether they have takoyaki or not. Even if they had the best sushi in town, I would never come back.
PROS
+ Good quality ingredients
+ Well-portioned
+ Authentic Japanese food
+ Pocky
CONS
- No alcohol (well, good for family with kids)
- Slow kitchen/sushi bar
- Poorly-trained server
- Inconsistent sashimi quality

It was raining so hard the night I went to Hitoe Sushi that I didn’t even get a chance to look at what the store front looks like. Regardless, it was a REALLY tasty meal. I’m guessing the main clientele here would be UBC students since it’s just a 10 min drive away, when I entered there were about 3 other tables of… students. The service is friendly and the food is reasonably priced, if it were not so out of the way for me, i would be back in no time...
Understated & unassuming but satisfying.... A little tough to see when driving by, understated decor, small space (you can't entertain a party of 10 easily). Prices are a little high for the ambience and portion size, but all is forgotten when you immerse yourself in the authentic flavors. Nice fresh cuts of sashimi. A great place for a casual meal with good friends.
One of the place can tell you what is the REAL Sushi in Vancouver !!! So fresh and good standard of the sushi, Highly recommend !! It will be prefect if they can selling sake!! Thanks Hitoe!!!
Japanese owned !!!!!. Japanese owned sushi place that serves real wasabi !! They do not use that paste stuff that most places use. The sushi is fresh and they have brown, black and white rice available. The only down side is that their seaweed is a tad bit chewy, otherwise this is a good place to go!
They must put crack in the food.... Traditional. Fresh and Simple...and absolutely delightful!
Being a vegetarian sushi options are very limited, but, don't ask me how, even the simplest avocado roll tastes better here.
The sizes are perfect, even the specialty rolls aren't ridiculously large...you know those ones that you can't even fit in your mouth and end up in an embarrassing mess in front of you.
We drive from downtown just for a meal here. Vegetarian's - try the box combo. And then wash it down with a glass of green tea to help you digest the rather large full course meal.
Magnificent. It's a rarity to find a Japanese restaurant owned and run by Japanese people nowadays. Hitoe Sushi is one of these rare restaurants, and boy is it incredible. The attention to detail in every order they take is remarkable, as each dish is made carefully and presented beautifully. Rolls and sashimi were spectacular to say the least. Their wasabi isn't the typical type you buy straight from the store either, its the real deal. Service was very friendly and we were well accommodated during our visit. Hitoe Sushi is definitely my go to sushi place if I'm around the UBC campus, as the extra bus trip out is just so worth it.
Excellent!. Another of my favourite places in Kits. Lunch or Dinner. Great service and exceptional food (Order some of the special fish or traditional dishes instead of the common rolls!)
This place is one of the best sushi in kits. Staff are very friendly and they give you pocky sticks for desert.... Who doesn't like pocky sticks?
The sweetest lil sushi place with the friendliest Japanese people in town. And the sushi is great!
Personal favourites are the Rainbow Roll and the Eeeeeeel Roll, but I'll often order whatever 'Special' is on the handwritten signs in the walls. It's always good.
Also, their daughter is quite the young artist- look for her colourful creations all over the place.
Love this little place!
Fav !!. Great sushi place ! fresh, good, extremely cheap and crazy service ! Walking in and stepping out you feel like almost like a rockstar because they are greeting you a lot haha ! Super nice people, great food and good price, what else could we ask for ?
Awesome people, great sushi, good prices - What more could you ask for! Thanks Hitoe \(^_^)/
Great Sushi Place in Vancouver. I am in love with sushi and tired many good Japanese restaurants in Vancouver. I go to Hitoe almost every week.
Hitoe seems one of the best Japanese restaurants due to its authenticity and freshness. Hitoe has really good Negitoro roll, toro nigiri selections, and sashimi salad. Special rolls seem to be little over priced since they are not big and not exceptionally delicious.
Their service is also great and price is also reasonable.
Definitely, try this restaurant.
Authentic Japanese Sushi. Cute and friendly restaurant, refreshing menu! Ordered a sashimi combo and both the salmon and tuna were very fresh. They have about 5 special california rolls, and we ordered the negitoro with teriyaki sauce one, which was delicious. I asked the staff what Hitoe means and she says "single eye lid" , referring to the chef/owner who has single eye lids only ha. I would definitely go back, and I live dt!
Good prices and they give a pack of Pocky at the end of your meal!! Service is great too.
Amazing!. The service is incredibly friendly, the food is simply delicious and not expensive at all. Does not look particulary appealing from the outside, but the place definitely worths a try!!
Good value and beautiful food. It's true there are loads of japanese restaurants in Vancouver but this one will defiantly stick in your mind. Tiny little restaurant with the sweetest staff. We made a reservation and ended up being 15 mins late :( They were so sweet and didn't seem annoyed in the slightest. Even came by in the middle of the meal to thank me by name for coming in. The food is a great value with lots of flavour and every dish is made so beautifully. Over all a great experience and will be going back very soon.
At first glance (ie the possibly hand-painted sign outside, or the taped menu in the window listing seemingly pricey combos at around $10 per), Hitoe doesn't seem that special- but it is! The $10 turns out to be a bargain. The staff are exceptionally friendly and welcoming, and the restaurant seems almost tranquil (attractively displayed books!). There's lots of positive energy flowing about the clean, organic-feeling space (maybe it's the wooden tree-ring bar, or forest mural? Or the zen music?). Anyway, the food: it's great. Fresh, large quality portion sizes, beautifully presented on nice serving dishes & wooden platters with attractive garnishes... Rolls are bite-sized but not skimpy on filling. Yum. Details are attended to here and everything (especially the food and guests) is treated with care. The bill even came with a sleeve of pocky sticks! Hitoe is a gem.
Lovely staff. Delicious food. Good portion size. Diverse menu. I love their Cali roll specials; they have Cali rolls topped it with your choice of 4 or 5 different combos. All are tasty and only about 4$ each. The only thing is that it's not licensed but the tea is always nice and hot.
Its a Hit-oe!. We went to Hitoe on our search for a Vancouver sushi restaurant that was comparable to our favourite place in Victoria, Ebizo Sushi. Have to say, of the places we've tried so far in Vancouver, this is the best!
We had Gomaee, Yam Tempura Roll, Tuna & Avocado Roll, Salmon & Avocado Roll, The Mango California Roll, and a BC roll. Our favourite by far was the Mango California roll, a delicious mixture of sweet (but not too sweet) and savoury. Hitoe uses sauces sparingly, which is a nice change, and favours fresh, simple ingredients that speak for themselves. The fish was fresh and smooth, the avocado was ripe and flavourful, and so was the yam tempura roll! The staff was above and beyond friendly, and even though we had to wait a bit to sit down, it was well worth it! We will definitely be returning to try more!
Hitoe Sushi. Appearances are deceiving - the decor waslow key but the restaurant surprised us with the variety of delicious sushi combinations.
The avocado salad was the perfect starter followed by beautifully arranged sushi on wooden platters. Also enjoyed the gyoza and gomae but the winner seemed to be the flying fish sushi! Green tea was served in charming tea pots that seemed to be refilled invisibly throughout the meal. Each dish was reasonably priced and we were pleasantly 'stuffed' at the end of the meal.
Adding to the ambience was the background sound of the Canuck's game with staff ) waiting on every table with wonderful attention but also allowing diners to enjoy leisurely meals. Especially charming was the addition of a blue Canuck's stocking worn as an accessory to add to the atmosphere!
It felt like we were sitting in a real neighbourhood style restaurant - casual and a guarantee of great food at a great price. I will definitely get down there again.
Who knew there were so many Japanese-run sushi restaurants in Vancouver? Aside from the lackadaisical decor, everything about this tiny (five tables) place screams quality, from the ceramic dishes, to the bamboo leaf garnishes, to the non-disposable chopsticks, to the real crab. The outstanding service easily handled special orders, as well as add-ons near the end of the meal. The food was uniformly excellent in taste and presentation. Although we enjoy our raw fish, we were happy to see a separate vegetarian section of the menu. All in all, we had a tremendously satisfying experience, and we will visit again.

Also, there is a large variety of Japanese-themed decorations to make the place feel more Japanese-themed. This is all fitting because Hitoe is actually run by Japanese people. When I opened the menu, the first thing that stood out to me was the large number of gluten-free items. The next thing I noticed was that the font was really small, but since I am a university student, that didn't bother me much.
Do people still even read this blog? I know it’s been ages since I’ve written last. A friend had just let me know that Chowtimes has me listed as a retired blog. Darn. Well, here’s a post for you. Today was one of those days in Vancouver- the kind that Alex Edler claims he waits all year for: It does rain quite a bit, but you forget about that because the sunny days are so good. It was far too nice out to stick around on campus and lock myself in The Dudgeon at Koerner library. Nicole and I hit up Urbanspoon with sushi in mind and read about this little gem in Kits. Not very far off from campus, Hitoe was a short bus ride away. Hitoe is a little nondescript hidden family restaurant along W 4th. It’s between Waterloo and Blenheim and pretty easy to miss. Nicole and I almost walked right past it since it doesn’t actually have its name marked on the building. We were seated immediately by a very friendly Japanese server. I love how sweet Japanese people are. I don’t mean to be racist or m
Hitoe is one of the a few Nigiri restaurant with high quality in Point Grey. The price is very reasonable too. If you are living nearby, it’s a good place to have some nice sushi :)
It’s spicy, sweet, fresh with a a hint of yuzu sauce. Made this a very refreshing roll, if only I can remember what this is called… :( If I recall I will edit this post!!!
But this place is a must try!
I had here was fresh and well made, which is really all you can look for with basic sushi. It satisfied my craving and it was affordably priced. They also had a lot of different lunch combos, which is always a bonus in my books. I would like to return to try more of their menu. Recommendation: Yes, for good and affordable sushi in Kitsilano. Hitoe Sushi is perhaps my favourite place in Vancouver to get delicious Japanese food and a truly authentic Japanese dining experience.
Definitely visit Hitoe Sushi if you’re in the Kits/Point Grey area and looking for sushi. Maybe you’re on the way to or from UBC, or heading to Chip Wilson’s house on Point Grey Road. Either way, can’t go wrong with this little restaurant. It may look hood from the outside, but I wish it were in my hood. Did I mention they also give you a package of Pocky when they bring your bill?
We are very lucky to have a tremendous choice of Japanese restaurants in Vancouver. There are high quality, high price ones like Miku , En , or the famous Tojo's. There are all-you-can-eat sushi factories that focus on quantity over quality. And izakayas still seem to be popping up everywhere. Of the many other categories, however, one of our favourites is the Japanese-run, food first neighbourhood sushi joint. Among those, Hitoe Sushi , located across from McBride Park in Kitsilano, is a shining example. On this, our third visit, we ordered three items for lunch, a chirashai don (above), a real-crab California roll, and a uni-unagi-ikura don . The dishes were all artfully presented on beautiful ceramic plates, with real garnishes like bamboo leaves, leaf lettuce, and pea shoots. The horseradish was grated, not reconstituted from powder. The sushi rice was properly seasoned. The fish was fresh. Our tea was brought in a pretty pot that lasted us through the e
Hitoe has been our go-to sushi restaurant for the past year now. Why? Well, the restaurant has amazing sushi combo deals that are very reasonably priced. Additionally, this Japanese-run establishment, consistently provides excellent, accommodating service. The specials you should take note of are the...
The sushi in general are very delicious! Well seasoned and very fresh! We took the salmon and rainbow sushi! But the takoyaki was not up to my taste, may be its just me, also they put such a tiny piece of octopus in it.
Hitoe Sushi is a hidden gem on West 4th. It is an authentic Japanese restaurant that has a nice cozy home feel. The sushi is of a high quality but yet reasonably priced. We sampled an assortment of dishes including the Aburi Oshi Sushi (salmon, mackerel, scallop), Uni Ikura Onagi Don, Nabeyaki Udon and Dinner Box Combo. They were all very good but the star of the night for me was the Uni Ikura Onagi Don. These three delicacies offers a contrast of textures and flavours delighting your taste buds. The firm balls of salted salmon compliments the soft, velvety richness of the sea urchin. The sweetness of the unagi adds another dimension that tempers the saltiness of the salmon roe. This Don literally transcends you to the shores of Hokkaido. Highly recommend!
A very small place hidden way out west 4th Ave for 11 years. Excellent rolls and nigiri, the soups tend to more authentic japanese flavour profile so be aware before ordering as it may not be what you expect. Lots of vegetarian and gluten free options. Prices are very fair for the quality and execution of the food.
Best sushi we've ever had!!!
Their Gluten free rice is tasty! Fish so fresh!!!!
Mt. Fuji roll is a new favourite!
The best sushi I’ve ever had and the best service at a sushi restaurant I’ve had. Would definitely recommend going here, and try the speciality rolls (mango dragon roll for the win)!
The best uni don (sea urchin on rice) I have ever had! Uni was fresh, creamy, and wasn't fishy at all.
Yellow tail cheek was a bit pricey for its size, but it had great taste and I did not even need lemon.
Scallop Sashimi was great and it went well with their real wasabi paste from Japan.
Unagi Roll used fire grilled eel on top of the roll. It was crispy.
Negitoro Aburi Oshi Sushi used too little tuna compared to rice and it did not have great balance. Although it was full of flavour, I with they had less rice.
Will absolutely come here again. I loved it.
Somewhat of a hidden gem, doesn't seem like it'll be incredible but it's quite good sushi.
I had one of the combos in the picture attached.
Extremely friendly staff! They checked in multiple times to see how we were enjoying our food. The food was absolutely delicious! We look forward to coming again in the near future.
** highly recommend the smoked duck aburi!**
