The service of the male waiter (maybe he is the boss) was very attentive. I can see there are lots of loyal customers here (mostly of them are western people) they are all familiar to the menu.
The food is tasty. The spring roll is hot & fresh.
It is a good place to enjoy a quick unch especially in cold and rainy days.
What a gem! Saved me from this cold and rainy typical Vancouver day! Soup broth so tasty, and great portions! I could have their soup all the time!
Not as good as I remember it way back when I used to live in the neighbourhood years ago. The broth feels like it is loaded with MSG. Even with this, the price is good for what you get. Bao Chau's deep-fried spring rolls are, however, still unparalleled. The shop looks kind of grungy on the inside but I feel like that is most serious pho shoppes.
On one of our weekend adventures, we decided to stop by this place to explore their famous spring roll and beef noddle. The pho broth is definitely delicious! But the highlight of our adventure was the spring roll which was crispy and tasty. All in all, it was definitely worth visiting this place and will definitely come back again one day when we are in the area.
Best spring rolls in Vancouver. Pho is average but their rice dishes are outstanding. Standard service. One of my favourite Vietnamese spots.
Bao Chau 寶珠之家 is located on East Hastings Street between Renfrew Street and Nanaimo Street. It is one of the famous Vietnamese Noodle Restaurants at Hastings-Sunrise area.
Our favourites are their beef noodles soup, hot spicy round noodles soup and Steamed Rice with BBQ Pork Chop, Shredded Pork, Pork Hash and Ham.
This place is well known to Vietnamese and local foodies. 👍
Had lunch. Beefball noodle was good and a side of spring rolls. Eerything was served hot and fast. Spring rolls were a bit oily, but good none the less.
One of the best in town. Always busy around dinner time. Consistently good broth. Generous portions. Ratings and number of positive reviews are true. Shame they only accept cash.
Got the spicy noodle soup with pork hock, ice rainbows beam dessert drink, combo A( BBQ chicken rice and salad roll. More than enough for two people. For the noodle, size and amount of topping is good. Combo A is a bit not up to expected taste, but still okay. The best part is the dessert and the owner( the only guy in the store who take the money ... Guess he is the boss).
The dessert drink can almost be a meal for a light eater as the beans are very filling. As a (kind of) sweet tooth , I love the drink a lot. ... A lot. And I have already decide my next meal here is this drink and spring roll.
The owner is good in how he is react when he aware a guy is leaving the store without paying. He just kindly remind the customer without getting him embarrass. And when I accidentally stuck 3 twenties together and thought there were only two and left the restaurant, the owner chase me and give me back the extra. The other waitress are very nice too. Give them a try when you are around.
寶珠越南小館 Bao Chau (越式春卷專門店)
泊車:店前後均有免費停車位
付賬方法:現金 Cash only
Combination A $12.00 (4/5分)
Com Ga Suon Nem $10.25 (4.5/5分)
套餐包括香茅燒雞、烤豬扒、烤稔肉、菜沙律、白飯、湯。三款烤肉都做得非常出色,百吃不厭
Grilled chicken has a smokey char I have never tasted in any other Vietnamese place. Pho has a very rich flavour too. Family run place, friendly staff.
Today my mother decided to bring me to her favourite Vietnamese restaurant. She frequents the place at least once a month, ordering take out for herself and my father. The photos online were a little deceiving. I could tell that they were taken a while ago, given the setting we stood in now. It was clear that they haven’t spent money on the upkeep of the place. Tables with their varnish worn off, scuffed floors, neon signs that no longer worked, and paintings faded from natural sun light. I have said it before, I can’t help but judge a restaurant by its decor, as it often relates to the kitchen and the hygiene of the place. Especially with browning plants by the entrance, clutter on the bar’s counter and desk, as well as a full garbage bag sitting by the register. But that at aside, the food was solid.
Pretty legit pho and their soup is very beefy with a subtle sweetness. I got the Pho Tai Nam and the cuts of meat were great every time. Crunchy spring rolls. Highly recommended. 👍
** After coming here a few times over the past year, this has become one of my favourite pho restaurants even though it's really out of the way.
I had my usual vermicelli bowl with grilled pork and spring roll as the gauge... Big serving of noodle, fresh vegetables. Grilled pork (not chop) as menu indicated was nicely seasoned. Spring roll had a crispy/chewy rice wrapper instead of spring roll wrapper which was a plus, tho inside was did not taste homemade. I was recommended to try their chicken rice dish with spring roll and pork by a regular who ate there twice a week. Next time. Big servings, everything fresh. Clean. Service efficient and friendly. Good price ($9). Mom and pop. Street parking free for 1 hour. I'll try the chicken dish next time.
By far the best Vietnamese spring rolls in Vancouver. They're also pretty reasonably priced at two dollars per roll. I'm not giving Bao Chau a perfect rating, as although their spring rolls are deserving of a 5/5, I have also tried their Pho, which is pretty good, but does not stand out like their spring rolls do. Come here for their spring rolls.
One of the well rounded vietnamese restaurant in vancouver, not only their pho is good but the rice items are also very very delicious as well. i must say i prefer the rice items in this location, their shredded pork, pork, lemon grilled chicken, sunny side egg (yes a regular egg) can all be made so good. well atleast that's for me. and i definitely don't mind eating here once every month, and that's quite a big comment for me as there are lots of other places to go, but going here is definitely not a bad choice, love the portion and the food as well. for the taste and the price i definitely love the place. no doubt about it.
• located along Hastings corner Slocan
• street parking only max 1 hr on a weekday
• the name says it all, truly "the spring roll special house" Their cha gio is actually one of the best that I had. The wrapper texture is just so crispy then chewy at the end. The filling itself is mouthwatering and not greasy at all
• the lemongrass chicken is ooohhh so nice over fresh vermicelli noodles
• the salad roll is crunchy dipped in tasty peanut sauce
Jess and I recently went to Bao Chau Vietnamese Restaurant prior to hitting up PNE. I've been here several times in the past, prior to blogging for Domo Is Craving, so I thought it'd be a good opportunity to check this place out again and blog about it!. In my opinion prior to blogging for Domo, Bao Chau had been one of my favourite pho places and I had considered it one of the best pho that I had tried at that point. Since blogging for Domo, my new favourite pho place has become Pho 37 so I was curious to see if this place will still remain one of my favourites.
Good food. Avoid the Spring rolls.. Calling yourself the "best spring rolls in town" invites nothing but criticism. So it was with an open mind that I tried them. Oddly enough, the spring rolls weren't that great... the rest of the food was though! If I owned this place I would play up the homemade pork patties, the exceptionally marinated lemongrass chicken, basically everything else on the menu BUT the spring rolls.
Don't get me wring, this place is awesome, but AVOID the spring rolls. The rest of the menu is much better.
I’m not exactly sure what it is, but there is something incredibly comforting and satisfying about good Vietnamese food. Maybe it’s a good thing I live in the Metro Vancouver area where there is no shortage of places to enjoy some lemon grass chicken on rice or a piping hot bowl of pho. And while you can order either one of those at Bao Chau, this joint on East Hastings near PNE is supposed to be best known for its spring rolls.
Come for the Spring Rolls and Che Ba Mau!. First time coming here after reading positive reviews on Urbanspoon. Combination A (about $10) was my favourite dish and I would highly recommend it because you get to sample three different items. The grilled skewered chicken is moist, tender, and well marinated. Bao Chau is known for their amazing spring rolls, and you get TWO with the combo! And yes, they are delicious! It seems like every table orders an extra side of spring rolls, so we followed suit. The summer rolls are very substantial, two rolls would make for a reasonable lunch. The peanut dipping sauce is delish too! I also highly recommend their "Che Ba Mau" (#61) drink; it's super super creamy from the generous amount of coconut milk they put in, not overly sweet, and the kidney beans and mung bean (aka green bean) paste is so yummy! I would come back just to drink this. The Bun Bo Hue is pretty good too, although I prefer it to be spicier. Very affordable prices and large portions; three main dishes and an extra order of spring rolls filled four hungry people (one of which is a growing teenage boy).
Wonderful. Love the pho here! beautiful lighter broth but complex nonetheless. Definitely a solid choice for great pho! Don't listen to anyone on the reviews who are dissing the spring rolls...they are awesome!
Simply delicious. This is hands down the best pho I have had anywhere in burnaby or vancouver. My boyfriend compares other vietnamese restaurants to how their food measures up to Bao Chau. Their beef is very thinly sliced, very tender and delicious. The pho broths are very rich and meaty but not overly salty. We have tried the pho combinations with beef slices, beef balls and beef tendon and they are all delicious. I also liked their BBQ pork vermicelli combo with spring roll. We live nowhere near this area but drive out here for the pho.
Great food, consistent and speedy service. Don't have anything bad to say about this place. Would recommend to all.
Best Spring Rolls in Town. Not suprised, since they are the house of spring rolls.. 100% different from the crispy Chinese kind.
Pho can be a bit salty.
Foodrebuttal.com Recommendation: Don't order the spring rolls if you don't like it chewy.
All time favorite Pho restaurant.. I have been a fan of Bao Chau for about six years now and I have never had a bad experience, except for the time I took my crazy aunt for lunch and she ruined my dining experience.
This is a family owned business who recently celebrated there 20th year in business. The owners are very friendly, and the service is excellent.
My daughter is a fan of the kids soup with well done flank. She once ate two whole bowls to her self. I have taken my daughter to several other Pho restaurants in Vancouver and Bao Chau is by far the best in terms of service when it comes to serving children. They provide scissors and a second bowl which is nice when you have to cut the meat and noodles to make it easier for her to eat, and the soup is served with out onions and yucky green things that little ones don't often like.
Usually I order #1 the house special beef noodle, or #36 with rice vermicelli with BBQ pork chop, grilled pork hash, spring rolls and shredded pork. The spring rolls are wicked good, as well as the salad rolls. Combo A is good too.
They also make and sell their own chili oil which is amazing!
Cheap fast and delicious. I eat here a few times a month. Take out is fast too.
Getting hungry writing this.
My son took me here for the first time, food was great owners are very friendly! Would very much recommend if you like Vietnamese food!
Been going to this restaurant for many years! The service is fast and always friendly. The food here is delicious. Order anything on the menu and it can't go wrong.
To go was my fault. OK first of all i just moved to this neighbourhood and I should have walked here but I had to get back home. SO, a couple of reasons not to order PHO to go, 1. It gets cold before you get home dah! 2> you can't expect the rare beef to cook in warm broth once home. 3> just walk there, wait and enjoy the place. 4> sooo many take away containers........So my bad all around.
The Pho, amazing. I came home, opened all the packages, looked at the spring rolls and almost fell over. So much food, everything was there. Spring rolls were chewy, just like the old Vina (or Ona) on Burrard and Cypress in the 80's. Things in my to go bag: Hoisin, Serachi, fresh Thai Basil, tons of fresh bean sprouts, big fat limes and really fresh rare beef. The broth had the right amaount of fish, star anise and salt for me> Staff were friendly on the ohone and in person. I'm so impressed being a lover of PHO a bit of a food slut and really tired of reviews of TOGO food. It's hard to do folks, doesn't matter if you are a restaurant or a caterer, if it aint cooked and brought to your table, the integrity of the food looses out by the min. So I have to say, I'm going to walk up there next time, wait in line if I have to, sit alone or with strangers and eventually, I will try everything this place has to offer. BIG effing yum from me. That was
Lunchtime Fave. I have been eating at Bau Chau almost once a week for about two years now, and it has never once disappointed me. It is quick and easy, and you can go on your lunch hour and be in and out in about 30-45 mins. I high recommend #15 lemon grass chicken (request no skin) soup. The spring rolls are highly addictive.
My favourite pho restaurant in town. Very delicious pho and spring rolls, I love this place.
Great food and good price. I go to Bao Chau when there's like no good dinner at home or no one in my household wants to cook. It's a great place to go for fast and cheap pho. Service isn't bad. The boss is always smiling.
I always get their Bun Ga which is vermicelli noodles with grilled chicken or their regular pho with meat balls and rare beef.
Prices here don't seem to have change for a while as their menu looks pretty old.
The only bad thing about it would be their hours. They close too early man. I wish it was a 24 hour pho place :(. But I understand that places on hasting shouldn't be open 24 hours cause no one really walk on the streets past 10pm.
Great place for spring rolls and Pho. Went here due to a high ranking on Urbanspoon and it didn't disappoint.
The spring rolls tasted fantastic, very crispy and the Pho I had was well prepared and the broth tasted great!
The best Pho I've ever had!!! I have had eaten at many many restaurants over the years and Bao Chau is by far the favorite. Spring rolls are the best, the broth delicious, and all the dishes or anything grilled are to die for.
Best beef brisket noodle soup around!
So East Viet. I've gotta learn more about pho. I like it because it's cheap and healthy, plus it's fun to put together at the table. Since Bao Chau is across the street from a medical office where I have business, and it gets rave reviews from the staffers there, I popped in for a quick lunch and some "pho"-losophy. Bao Chau is "so East Van" with its windows looking out on a high-traffic section of East Hastings Street, and the mix of ethnicities and income classes at adjoining tables.
Bao Chau's top-of-the-menu pho is an "everything including the kitchen sink" version. Best part was the rare beef -- thin-sliced, tender, came out pink but cooked quickly once it was fully immersed in the broth. I'm less keen on the beef balls -- is that made from beef heart? -- which were well-cooked and flavourful but I don't like the chewy texture. I took a couple home and my cats LOVED them. The tendon and the stringy bits that look like anemones or octopus parts -- I guess that's the tripe -- I can do without. I know they add flavour, but they make my Westernized appetite a bit squeamish.
The broth at Bao Chau is tasty, not too salty, and didn't give me an MSG headache. The sprouts and basil leaves were super-fresh. I rate Bao Chau's pho highly, but next time I have it, I'll be more selective in what kind of beef I order.
Since they tout their sping rolls so hghly, I ordered a couple of the cold ones with pork hash. First I ordered another type, but the waitress, seeing my Anglo face, asked "Are you sure you want that type? They're made with pork skin." Thank you, I'll pass on that! So I commend the help at Bao Chau for being nice to customers.
The cold spring rolls were also ultra fresh, with crunchy lettuce and sprouts, vermicelli inside that was not soggy, and the pork hash (Vietnamese Spam?) was OK. I'd have them again, but they're not cheap, at $5.50 for two.
My only gripe was a trivial one with the Vietnamese coffee, which came with the coffee already filtered through the cap with the grounds, and the ice in a separate cup. I like to let my coffee drip through the ice and then down onto the sweetened condensed milk, because it mixes better and makes a nice "tequila sunrise" effect. The pre-dripped Viet coffee at Bao Chau didn't let me do that, but that's a minor gripe about a decent place.
A few weeks ago I went to Bao Chau with a girlfriend. They serve a decent pho; flavourful broth (maybe just a hint too salty for my taste though) with a good helping of noodles and other ingredients. The spring rolls a Bao Chau are really cheap: $3.50 for two full rolls and $1.75 for a single roll. The fried outer skin might be considered a little tough for some, but I enjoyed it, especially considering the price. My friend ordered one of their combo meals, and it was huge! I'd go again. :)
What The Pho. This place has been a long-time fave of mine. Used 2 work close-by and dine here at least 1x/week. Now that I am not close-by, I have only returned a couple times.
I am especially partial to the pho and the combo plates. Especially notable is the grilled pork-hash salad rolls. You have 2 experience this PHOnomenon.
Awesome pho and rice. I've been going to bau chau for about 10 years.. .. think that's about right
as a kid i had the springrolls and back then it was a dollar per spring roll =) now its 1.75$
the pho is good, awesome, the best i've had so far. what makes bau chau's pho unique is their soup base doesn't contain as much MSG as other establishments.
feeling famished? - order #1 - it has Everything
can't eat beef? - order # 15 - noodles and lemon grass chicken --- and if you don't want all that oil/grease in ur soup (because the chicken's served in the soup) or don't like the chicken soggy, just ask for the chicken on the side
you want ONLY beef? - #2 or #4
both contain beef, but #2 has rare beef slices
#4 i think is more or less the same...but has tripe noodle instead o O along with like beef tendon etc =) yum
other establishments like Saigon (down from bauchau) or pho hoa etc cannot compare to Bau Chau's broth.
Bauchau has been here for more than 20 years, so they have to be doing something right.
Asides from the pho (pronounced fuh), their rice dishes are exceptional. Very nice dishes, good portions and comfortably hot, just right to eat, but not hot enough to burn your tongue or stomach =)
Rice dishes wise, definitely try the BBQ Pork Chop and Chicken (lemon grass kicks ass)
I used to be a vermicelli man, but its all pho for me now XD but... i'll tell you guys whats up.
Vermicelli was, u have quite a bit of vermicelli on top, with the vegetables below (vegetables consist of bean sprouts, cucumbers, shredded lettuce + carrots, and the odd tomato)
most of these dishes are usually served with Spring rolls, but more on that later
if you're feeling famished, try #36, it comes with 3 kinds of mean, i think shredded pork, grilled pork hash, and, bbq pork, along with 1 spring roll
--> originally # 36 had TWO spring rolls but... they cut it back..
Now.. their Spring rolls. They used to be legendary, but now, in my opinion they're not as fresh as they used to be. it seems like they re-deep fry the stuff but, it still tastes okay.
Overall, bauchau is the best place to get a nice hot bowl of noodle soup without breaking the bank, or your colon from all the MSG XD
Average you'll spend here is probably 8$ including tip
ppl who are starving will probably be full with just 10$ =D
oh yeah forgot to mention, its CASH ONLY
Enjoy
Not the Best. I vote that I like this place because I used to love going to Bao Chau, it is closed to home, tasted good and the prices were cheap. Not anymore though, Bao Chau has raised it's price not too long ago (sometime in 2008). This place was where my family, friends, and coworkers used to frequent quite often but not anymore ever since I found a raw piece of Chicken in my vermicelli combo. When I say raw, I don't mean slightly uncooked, it was literally fully raw. They offered to exchange it, but I did not have any appetite after that. I would walk half a block east and go to Le Petite Saigon instead, it is much cleaner and well lit there too.
Di Di Mau to Bao Chau. Okay, someone please tell me in the comments section what their favorite Pho spot is. I have been to lots of Pho restaurants in the lower mainland and each is never much better than the other one. Sure some are cleaner, some tables don't smell like stinky towels and some accept debit but the flavour all seems to be about the same. Please tell me where your favorite is.
I decided to stop by Bao Chau on the weekend for a quick lunch. Bao Chau used to be a frequent stop for me, mostly because of the great value for their spring rolls. The place is somewhat clean in comparison to other Pho restaurants and the meal is solid. The pho is cheap, generally being $6.00 for a small and $6.50 for a large and comes with a good portion of meat. However, in my opinion the best part of the restaurant are the spring rolls, they are cheap ($1.75), you can order any number and they are of decent size.
Rating - Solid and clean enough. They do not serve dog at Bow Chau, I asked to satisfy my curiousity.
Bao Chau

Vancouver
I also find that servers in Pho restaurants speak better engrish than ones in Chinese restaurants.
This is what I term “Pork Galore” (it has pork chop, pork hash, and pork spring rolls). I don’t know how they prepare their meats, but I LOVE IT. The Pork Chop is very well marinated and flavourful, as well as the Pork Hash, which possesses a distinct grilled taste.
The Final Verdict: Yummy Pho. Great spring rolls. Try their vietnamese coffee. Don’t expect it to be the cleanest place in town, but it’s clean enough. I almost always order their #8 (rare beef, beef balls and tripe), but alot of people order their house special #1 (it has pretty much everything, but I don’t like tendons).
They give you a lot of noodles and a good amount of extras! The noodles come out really fast after you make an order too so if you're in a hurry this is a great place to go. Great place for take out too! Please go try and enjoy.
Even though I love their pho, I wanted to try something new so I ordered the steamed rice with grilled chicken, bbq pork chop, and shredded pork with a fried egg on top.
Bao Chau Vietnamese 寶珠 is located on 2717 East Hastings Street near the infamous Pulled Pork Pancake at Red Wagon and PNE / Playland. This Pho restaurant has been around since I was a little kid and still continues to serve up simple Vietnamese dishes such as Pho noodles, broken rice, and their infamous spring rolls. Although they no longer offer any Banh Mi (such a disappointment! They were really good), Bao Chau is still one of my favorite Pho places with reasonable prices.
Out of all the many pho places, Bao Chau ranks high on my list.
Bao Chau Vietnamese is located on Hastings near Playland, they sell the usual dishes like pho, rice and vermicelli noodle dishes. They are best known for their cheap prices and good eats. Simple Vietnamese food.
Bau Chau Vietnamese hits the mark on all counts – and is a great option for young families like ours.
Ah, the Vietnamese phở joint…my favourite type of restaurant. In Greater Vancouver there's an abundance of really good ones. Many folk mainly stick to the phở. Can't blame them one bit…there's some great bowls to be had. Bảo Châu is a perfect ex
I went to Bao Chau the other day because I was craving for some tasty spring rolls. They claim to have the best spring rolls in town so I thought it would be the best place to satisfy my cravings. Well, it was definitely indeed one of the best I've had! T
Rating / 3 out of 5 stars Bao Chao is one of many Vietnamese restaurants that line the Hastings corridor in East Vancouver. They are, apparently, well known for their spring rolls. We were really just seeking out alternative Pho spots from our usual haunt
