Roti Canai - ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
It is one of my favourite appetizers compared to their spring rolls. The currr sauce really compliments the roti
Pineapple Seafood Friedrice - ⭐️ ⭐️
It is ok. Not really flavourful but usually a go to for most people and it looks good I guess. Would recommend their Nasi Goreng instead.
Litchi-mint drink - ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Super refreshing especially during a nice sunny day. Give it a go. Will NOT REGRET it.
This was one of the few places still open for late dinner. We ordered pineapple fried rice, roti Canai, chicken satay and sayur lemak which is essentially vegetable curry. All the dishes were pretty good, though one should not expect them to be authentic Malaysian taste-wise. Still good in their own right.
I come here with my vegetarian girlfriend all the time and even though they modify some of my favourite dishes so that it doesn't contain any meat or seafood they still taste amazing!
My favourites are the tofu goreng, the eggplant (I die), and the green beans. I have had the rendang beef, skewers, Roti canai, and Assam curry tofu and vegetables and they're all delicious! The black cod is amazing as well. I wasn't too crazy about the lettuce wrap though.
The only reason I didn't give Banana leaf a perfect score is because the service is pretty inconsistent. It isn't spectacular but sometimes the servers disappear so it's hard to get their attention if you need something and there is one male server/host that is really condescending and seems to usually be in a bad mood.
Regardless I will always return for my favourite eggplant dish!
Pretty standard meal for a vegetarian. I like how they have several vegetarian options for us and they can make a dish vegetarian if you ask the chefs to. The decor inside is very nice and comfy wiry some palm trees and nice painted glass stained walls. The food was yummy, however I thought they should've given us more lettuce in the lettuce wrap appetizer since they only have us 4 leaves and it was $14. The roti canai was also alright, though I was surprised the curry was sweet. Service was alright, though they never refilled our glasses of water or asked if our meal was okay.
Alright. So I feel like after having blogged for the past year I’ve built up a bit of a rapport with my readers, and that you guys deserve honesty from me. So here’s my honesty: I’m writing this blog drunk. I’d rather be sleeping (or eating McDonalds), but Drunken Master texted me 30 minutes ago telling me it was my turn to write a blog, and I didn’t feel like arguing with him, so here I am. Thankfully, I actually did go out for a meal today (the hardest part about writing for a blog is actually eating out enough), so I have something to write about. My best friend (Bits) returned to town yesterday for the holidays. Her old supervisor organized a lab lunch with her old co-workers, and was gracious enough to invite me along to join. So we all met up at Banana Leaf for lunch. Then afterwards we got drank. A lot.
I haven't had Malaysian/South Asian food in ages!! Not since I got back from my MY/SG/ID trip (which was back in February!) It's been WAY too long!!. There's actually quite a few South Asian restaurants near ubc/kits! And I'm planning on trying them alll ;D MamaLee's especially (I've heard amazing things about their hainanese chicken!!) and Kaya Malay Bistro!
I’m back baby! After a long month away spanning 5 countries in Europe, I finally touched down in Vancouver eager to get back to my routine. Not even 5 minutes had passed from the time that my plane touched down before I received a text from Little Bunny asking if I wanted to grab dinner. It was 5PM, but to my stomach it was drunken noms o’clock (2AM Barcelona time), so I figured why not. The best way to beat jet lag is to keep yourself busy and not nap, so this seemed like a good distraction. We’d talked about going to Banana Leaf in Kits before I left for my trip and it was within walking distance of my home, so it wasn’t too much of a hassle considering how exhausted I was. We agreed to meet at my home around 7PM and walk over sinceit wasn’t too far.
The curry chicken and the roti canai are really exceptionally amazing. The flavours are strong and consistent and the roti is really tender and slightly sweet which makes it addictive. Tried their deep fried banana with ice cream for dessert as well. It's sooo good. Would recommend this place highly.
Do Yourself a Favor and Stop in For Lunch Soon!. My wife and I stopped in at Banana Leaf for lunch as we passed through Vancouver - good move! It's just a few blocks off the Highway 99 corridor through the city.
We had the lunch tasting menu and enjoyed everything they offered (Fresh Papaya and Pineapple Asian Green Salad, Vegetable Spring Rolls, Roti Canai, Rendang Beef (spicy!), Prawns & Fish in Assam Curry, Sambal Green Beans, and Pisang Gotreng (fried banana for dessert)). The food was great and the service excellent!
Do yourself a favor and stop in for lunch soon!
Worth the wait!. I've always wanted to try it and it was well worth the wait. The beef curry (was great), the Caramelized Ginger Black Cod (was absolutley amazing...I'm going back just to have that again), the Gulai Seafood (it was OK. Lacked flavor.). We had a tasting menu when we went, just to try a few things, and most of it was great.
Great Food, Great Service. Love the atmosphere here, always lively and staff are extremely friendly. Service is always great and food is top notch. Most of the menu items are shareable so great for groups. Price is reasonable for sharing within the group of people but portion is abit on the small side. Overall, good place to have a relax dinner with plenty of meter parking in the area.
Thumbs up!. My all time favourite! Roti is the must have dish when I go to banana leaf and the curry dip is much better than other Malaysian restaurants. The other item that I must order is green leaf salad, they use real papaya and pineapple! But one thing I gotta complained about this salad is the take out portion is much smaller than when you dine in there. Other than that, the services is good and food are definitely fresh and delicious.
Love at first bite!!. I came here with my boyfriend after work on thursday evening! There were so many different dishes we decided to just order the 9 course tasting menu as we had never been there before! It was 30 dollars per person, and included the following.
A p p e t i z e r s S a m p l e r
Mango Kerabu
Roti Canai
Satay Chicken
Steamed Mussels in Cumin & Ginger
E n t r e e s Q u a r t e t
Rendang Beef Curry
Gulai Tiger Prawns and Scallots
Caramelized Ginger Sablefish
Sambal Green Bean
Main courses accompanied by rice
T o F i n i s h
Pisang Goreng
It was fantastic! My favorite parts were the first 3 appetizers, the green beans, and the sablefish. I could eat that ginger sablefish dish every meal for the rest of my life it was so tasty!
including a couple drinks each the total bill was under 100 which is an excellent deal.
The ambience was great, the service was great the drinks were good. I hope to go back again soon!
The lychee mojito and the sambas green beans are to die for. Other favourites include the mixed seafood and the sweet and sour pork chops. Oh and the boneless chicken curry... Ah who'm I kidding- it's all frikken delicious!
Great service, good price and nice in Summer when the windows are open.
And I haven't evenentioned to fried banana dessert... Yum!
One of my favorite restaurants. Very good food. I love their roti canai but that's the only dish that's good. we normally order menu for 2 so we can have variety of menu dish items and they're excellent value and taste delicious.
Mango sticky rice was a poor effort today. For $7 it should not be like mush.
Love the pineapple fried rice and papaya salad
Love this location of Banana Leaf. Food is always great and the servers are the best of all the branches.
Rendang Beef is my go to food but tonight found it slightly overlooked. My guests each tried a shrimp dish but only the King Prawns was a dissapointment as the excavation required to produce a minimal bounty was a "fool me once" experience. Appetizer of peppered oysters was very well made and we all wanted more. The seafood soup was another hit. All out dishes had a nice spicy taste but not overly done as to throw off the foods flavors.
The restaurant filled up in a Minday night which I see as a sign of a good eatery.
Never had a single bad dish here, awesome place to go with 4 or 5 people and share several dishes. I recommend the Kung pow chicken, curry boneless chicken, sambal green bean, sambal chilli okra, coconut rice, appetizer sampler, mee goreng, and the blackened cod. Also if you are interested in having desert the deep fried banana with the coconut ice cream is unreal.
I have been eaten at Banana Leaf-(Kits location) for the past 5 years.
I never have one bad experience.
Always have good service and good food.
They always busy, especially weekend. I will keep supporting Banana Leaf. Me and my son love it a lot.
Thank you for all the good hearts there!
Bananas for banana leaf.. Banana leaf is nothing short of amazing! everything we ordered was delicious. ordered the crab (special on monday) which was cooked to perfection and at a great price. Portions are great and so very tasty. reccomend to anyone looking for good thai/malay food
I tried Banana Leaf for the first time for lunch .. Wow! If you haven't gone you must try it ! Food is fresh and tasty , wonderful service and a great price point !
Amazing food and atmosphere. I love this place. So many interesting dishes and all really well prepared. Love the pineapple and papaya salad and the hot and sour soup. The deep fried banana dessert is not to be missed. It is so good. The room is great and service is excellent. Friendly, fast and charming. Great drink selection too.
Go in groups of 6 or more for the $15/person pre-set menu. it's fantastic and there'll be MORE than enough!
Great service. Fair prices. Loved the randang (sp) beef. Highly recommend the lettuce cups/wraps.
Definitely one of my favourite places. Those reviewers on this site who have complained about the inauthenticity of the spicing levels may very well be right, but to my admittedly inauthentic palette the dishes on offer here are delicious, exotically interesting, and very few of them suffer by being without the oppressive clout of the hotter chillies. On the several occasions that I've eaten here there has always been something surprising and delightful among the dishes that we've ordered, (all of which have been veg or fish -- I can't speak for their meat) and only very rarely has there been anything that lacked interest. The roti canai is head and shoulders above any of the roti breads I've had elsewhere (including at other banana leaf locations). The service is good and the vibe, at least in the main dining room, is invariably lively and fun without ever seeming to get excessively noisy. The smaller dining room (to the right of the bar as you go in) is rather less charming and, perhaps this is my imagination, but it has always seemed to me that the service in there is rather less attentive and more rushed.
5/5. Great food and great service. All round good.
Love their deep fried banana dessert dish
Great food. One of my favorite places for Malaysian. Try the lamb shanks and satays. Yummy!
A local Kits fav' of mine. The place we take out of town friends when we want good food beyond the usual Japanese-Chinese-Thai line-up... nice atmosphere (decorated with Kota Bahru-style kites among other colourful Malay things).
Amazing!. Just amazing! My first time with Malaysian food so I can't say anything as regards its authenticity, but regardless of that this is GOOD food. Service was fast and friendly, though we went for an early dinner before it got too busy. Every one of the several dishes we ordered was delicious.
It was good but not sure if I would return.
Yum. Awesome place to dine with colorful dishes.
gets very busy during lunch time.
When you get the craving, There is no better than the Banana Leaf
Best location, by far, for starters. If you long to stray from the plethora of Japanese eateries in Vancouver, your tastebuds will rewarded. Savoury, spicy and down-right tasty. This is culinary foreplay for your gullet. Go on, you know you want to...
Yummy. Better than the other locations - room is comfortable and cheery unlike the other two. Food is superb, well seasoned and service was friendly and fast. It was not that busy but it was Canada Day. Dinner for three with one drink each was about $116.00
Amazing!. I recently had the pleasure of finally trying Banana Leaf in Kitsilano and I could not have been more impressed. The service, food and atmosphere were all excellent. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a spicy change from the ordinary.
The Pineapple Fried Rice dish is a must try.
It has been a while since I last visited "Banana Leaf". I remembered not being impressed over dinner, however today's lunch turned that all around. You can't miss the place driving down West Broadway, a bold green building with bright yellow text. Inside, the restaurant is jammed packed with authenticity. From wooden statutes that faintly resemble humans and giant fanned out fans, to neatly stacked spice racks and etched on voluptuous urns. I liked the Thai paper puppets and the symbols of prosperity that hung off walls. Mix all this with framed art work, tropical music, and servers wearing traditional patterned aprons; you got yourselves quite the theme here. It was busy on a Thursday for lunch. We came at a little past 12pm, and avoided waiting with the other hungry guests. Those who had to stand in the foyer without reservations, that came after us. Already enjoying the atmosphere I was now ready to enjoy the food. I was overwhelmed with options that I knew I would like. If yo
This is marinated skewers of chicken and pork, grilled and served with a curried peanut sauce. I do love the malaysian style of satay. It’s lightly spicy and slightly sweet. The dipping sauce is lightly spicy and slightly sweet, and rather crunchy because of the coarsely ground peanuts. The satays were done just right, moist and tender, with a light char around the edges, lots of flavor.
...◦Rice noodle in coconut soup base made of dried shrimps, chili, garlic, lemon grass & turmeric with bean sprout, cilantro, tofu, egg, chicken, fish-cake, squid & shrimps.
Seeing as how we always have trouble knowing what to order, we decided to get the Lunch Tasting Menu so we could try a bunch of different things. First up was
Malaysian food is a mixture of culinary tastes from India, China, Thailand and Indonesia. It combines the best of South East Asia, from India's roti canai (seen below), Singapore's laksa, to China's Hainanese chicken rice. There is so much selection to choose from so don't hesitate to ask your server for their favorites. The roti canai- a serving of flaky layered break with curry dip, was a must- so delicious and definitely set the tone for the rest of the meal. In fact I think I filled up quickly on just the roti itself. Our meal was served very quickly and all of us cleaned our plates in less
We’ve always wanted to try Banana Leaf after hearing all these raves about it from fellow foodies. Finally we managed to have a date together from our busy schedules on Monday night! I wasn’t going to write a review for it simply because there are already
One of may favourite places is the Kits location of Banana Leaf. One of the advantages of a big group is getting to try as many dishes as possible. Wd dined out large on all the fine Malaysian offerings.
Last week I was invited to a birthday dinner and the birthday girl decided to dine at the Banana Leaf at Kitsilano.
A friend of ours was departing Vancouver so we treated him for a lunch at the Banana Leaf restaurant in Kits located at 3005 W Broadway, Vancouver. View Larger Map Banana Leaf specializes in Malay cuisine. We got there at about 11:30pm on a Saturday morni
We were piglets this weekend - feeling lazy yet hungry equals going out to eat, even when we know we're going to eat lots all weekend. I haven't been to the Banana Leaf in Kitsilano in a while, but we were shopping out that way this weekend and decided it
